MECHANICAL TOLERANCE ANALYSIS AND UNCERTAINTY ANALYSIS
Created September 17, 2018, C. Lee Last updated February 8, 2019, A. Robbins and J. Haglund
Purposes of the Experiment
To illustrate the basic concepts of statistical data analysis.
To demonstrate the importance of tolerances in how mechanical parts fit together
To find the source of measurement errors and estimate measurement uncertainty.
Activities
This lab requires one or more members of your lab group to measure a deep groove type ball bearing (inner/outer diameter) by using Vernier calipers.
Theory
a. Tolerance How is it that nuts from one supplier and bolts from another supplier work together? The answer
b. Uncertainty
As we learned earlier in class, an accurate measurement is one that is close to the ‘true value’. However, in practice we do not know what the ‘true value’ is.
