GM is a multinational automobile manufacturer headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. They employ over one hundred eighty thousand employees spanning 6 continents and speaking 70 languages. In 2014 GM executed a massive recall due to a known defective ignition switch that went unreported for over a decade.
As defined by Edgar Schein, organizational culture is “Apattern of shared basic assumptions that a group has learned as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems.” (Schein, 2004)
The article, The GM Culture Crisis: what leaders must learn from the culture case study, describes GM as an organization suffering from a dysfunctional culture.
