Incarcerated Women in Oklahoma Dorothy Scott Chamberlain College of Nursing NR602: Primary Care of the Childbearing and Childbearing Family September 2019
Oklahoma has a population problem that involves a high majority of women who are incarcerated. Oklahoma has a high percentage rate of women who are incarcerated than any other state (Winkler, 2018).
According to Winkler (2018) the incarceration rate is not due to unusually high crime rate but due to extremely punitive laws that Oklahoma maintains.
Women who are addicted to drugs or have mental health issues are sitting behind bars for twelve years for selling marijuana (Sweeney, 2017).
These women have a family that is being impacted by their poor decision. Children who are now the ward of the state unless there is a family member who is willing and able to take them in.
