Hi my name is Dorothy and today I will be discussing Gynecomastia for my NR 602 grand round discussion
What is gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is described as the enlargement of the breast tissue in males. As seen in the picture that I have demonstrated to the right-hand side of the slide. It is clinically characterized by the presence of a mass extending concentrically from the nipple.
You can see how the nipple comes out like a cone shape and does not have the development of a round breast. It generally develops within both of the nipples but can sometimes only develop unilaterally but this rarely happens.
Pathophysiology
Gynecomastia is the imbalance between estrogen and androgen and the effects can increase in estrogen production, relative decrease in androgen production or a combination of them both. The estrogen acts as a growth hormone for the breast.
