There are three types of non-academic intelligence that affect our abilities to function as effective leaders; Social Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, and Cultural Intelligence.
Each of these non-academic factors can affect the way that we, as leaders, function and, more importantly, how we are perceived by our subordinates and peers.
A socially intelligent leader is cognizant of their own feelings as well as the feelings of those around them, but also, a socially intelligent leader has the foresight to understand how their actions can or will affect the feelings and attitudes of others.
Social Intelligence involves “being aware of your own motives as well as the feelings of others, knowing what to do to fit into different social situations, and knowing what makes other people tick.” (Stallard, 2014).
