COR 220-14 The Passion of Artemesia: Pietà 11/29/11
In the year 1500 Michelangelo Buonarroti completed his marble sculpture, Pietà. Life-sized, the statue was one of the first pieces created by Michelangelo and was commissioned in 1498 for Jean de Billheres and took two years to complete.
The Pietà was originally made as the centerpiece for the cardinal’s funeral monument in the Chapel of Santa Petronilla. However, the roman mausoleum was located near the south transept of St. Peter’s which was later destroyed by Bramante when the basilica was rebuilt in the 18thcentury.
It now resides in a small chapel to the right when entering the basilica (Wiki.com).According to historians, soon after the Pietà was placed and unveiled, Michelangelo visited the Chapel. While he was there he overheard some observers commenting how similar they thought the work https://www.solvedcollegepapers.com/product/cor-220-cor220-cor-220-iet
