Hip-Hop’s Mistake
Rappers often like to address social issues in their songs, whether they be stereotypes, addiction, culture, race, or some combination. For example, Eminem frequently hits addiction and family and race from the context of a white man in a black industry, while artists like Kendrick Lamar attack racial inequality and alcoholism.
In “Bitch Bad”, Lupe Fiasco addresses the topic of women’s stereotypes specifically in black culture. He constructs a successful argument proving that the social norms presented by black hip-hop culture are misleading childrens’ perceptions of women.
Fiasco does so through his ethos, an extended metaphor, and the use of blackface in the video.First, Fiasco’s credibility must be assessed. Does he have the influential power to make this argument successful?
