Language and Identity
Language isn’t something I’ve ever really thought of as a defining feature of my identity so it’s a bit difficult to find how it really fits in as a big piece of my identity.
To start, English is the only language I’m able to speak fluently. When I was much younger, my dad taught me a bit of Swahili by reading books to me and throwing bits and pieces into conversations. He started small with just counting numbers, and he tried to help me expand my vocabulary.
But over time, it became less frequent and I unfortunately never made it that far. Then later, from 5th grade untilmy junior year in high school, I took Spanish.
I was able to retain quite a bit, although I was much better at reading than writing. But sophomore and junior year I was placed with a teacher
