rnthmatinu NATIONAL ARSON AWARENESS WEEK MAY 1- 7, 2011 WHEREAS,

The theme for 2011 Arson Awareness Week is Working Together to Extinguish Serial Arson; and

WHEREAS,

Arson is a horrific crime which robs communities of valuable assets - lives - and property, which devastates communities; and

WHEREAS,

The U, nited States Fire Administration reports that there are an estimated210, 300 resulting in approximately 375 deaths and 1,300 injuries; and

WHEREAS,

In addition to needless deaths and injuries, an estimated I billion dollars in direct property loss occurs annually; and

WHEREAS,

In 2009, there were 1,758 arson fires reported in Maryland, resulting in direct property damage of approximately $23,660.00; and

WHEREAS,

It is fitting to commend Maryland's fire investigation units for their efforts to combat the problem of arson through aggressive criminal investigation and public information programs that aid in the arrest and conviction of arsonists.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARTIN O'MALLEY, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MARYLAND, do hereby proclaim MAY I 7, 2011 as NATIONAL ARSON AWARENESS WEEK in Maryland, and do commend this celebration to all of our citizens.
