STATE FIRE MARSHAL REMINDS MARYLANDERS OF SAFETY WHEN USING DECORATIVE OPEN FLAME DEVICES PIKESVILLE, MD (June 16, 2011) – Recent reports of burn injuries received while using “Fire Pot” open flame devices have caused enough concern for the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue a statement for the use of this product line. Please access their website for details at: http://www.cpsc.gov/pr/fuels06142011.html The warm glow created when using open flame devices such as: Chimineas, tiki style torches, fire pits, candles, fire pots, oil lamps and so many other flame producing devices can be both enjoyable and safe when the manufacturer’s directions are followed. State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard states, “Too many Marylanders receive burn injuries or worse each year as a direct result from not adhering to the basic safety guidelines provided with these products purchased for personal enjoyment. An element of risk is associated with the use of these items and their proper use is the responsibility of the individual operating the device”. The following tips are provided to assist in the safe use of these types of products so all Marylanders can enjoy a tragedy-free atmosphere. • Ensure all combustible items are kept away from the location of the device. • Make sure to place the device on a solid level surface prior to use. • When placing the device, make sure it cannot be easily knocked over by activity from kids or pets. • Remember that children tend to be fascinated by flames. Take the time necessary to explain the risks and dangers associated with fire. • Never leave an open flame device unattended. Out of sight tends to mean out of mind. The potential for a tragedy increases greatly when these devices are not extinguished when leaving the area. • The storage of the fuels needed for these devices should be in a cool dry location, out of the reach of children. Never use gasoline for an open flame device, the fumes from the gasoline will ignite and cause a flash fire that causes severe burns. • Consider the use of alternative style non-flame devices when you cannot ensure the safety of family, guests and pets. • Please read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Keep the instructions available to refer to when in doubt of the operation of the device and when instructing others on its safe use.
