INMATE CAUSED MALICIOUS DESTRUCTION OF FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM CHARLES COUNTY, MD (April 4, 2014) – Deputy State Fire Marshals served a criminal summons on a 29 year-old inmate at the Charles County Detention Center for destruction of a fire sprinkler and activation of the fire alarm system. The incident originally occurred at 8:33 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 inside the inmates’ cell. The inmate responsible for the incident, Michael Steven Akonom, was charged with False Fire Alarm and (2) counts of Malicious Destruction of Property. The activation of the fire sprinkler resulted in nearly $400.00 in damage. If convicted of the charges, Akonom could face additional penalties of up to 8 years imprisonment and/or $7,500 in fines. ###
