72 Years of Aviation Excellence

In 1946, the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Chester Nimitz, had a vision to create a flight exhibition team in order to raise the public’s interest in naval aviation and boost Navy morale. In the 1940’s, we thrilled audiences with our precision combat maneuvers in the F6 Hellcat, the F8 Bearcat and the F9 Panther. During the 1950’s, we refined our demonstration with aerobatic maneuvers in the F9 Cougar and F-11 Tiger and introduced the first six-plane delta formation, still flown to this day. By the end of the 1960’s, we were flying the F-4 Phantom, the only two seat aircraft flown by the delta formation. In 1974, we transitioned to the A-4 Skyhawk, a smaller and lighter aircraft with a tighter turning radius allowing for a more dynamic flight demonstration. In 1986, we celebrated our 40th Anniversary by unveiling the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, which we still fly to this day. In 1949, it became necessary for the Blue Angels to operate a support aircraft to move personnel and equipment between show sites. These support aircraft including the Douglas R4D Sky Train, the Curtiss R5C Commando, the Douglas R5D Skymaster, and the Lockheed C-121 Super Constellation. In 1970 the team received the Lockheed Martin C-130, affectionately known as “Fat Albert.”

The 2018 Blue Angels Team

A total of 17 officers voluntarily serve with the Blue Angels. Each year the team typically selects three tactical (fighter or fighter/attack) jet pilots, two support officers and one Marine Corps C-130 pilot to relieve departing members. The Chief of Naval Air Training selects the “Boss,” the Blue Angels Commanding Officer. Boss must have at least 3,000 tactical jet flight-hours and have commanded a tactical jet squadron. The Commanding Officer flies the Number 1 jet. The Chief of Naval Air Training also selects the “XO,” the Blue Angels Executive Officer. XO is a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) and must have at least 1,250 tactical jet flight-hours. Career-oriented Navy and Marine Corps jet pilots with an aircraft carrier qualification and a minimum of 1,250 tactical jet flight-hours are eligible for positions flying jets Number 2 through 7. The Events Coordinator, Number 8, is a Naval Flight Officer (NFO) or a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO) who meets the same criteria as Numbers 2 through 7. The Marine Corps pilots flying the C-130T Hercules aircraft, affectionately known as “Fat Albert,” must be aircraft commander qualified with at least 1,200 flight hours. Career-oriented officers specializing in maintenance, administration, aviation medicine, public affairs and supply fill support positions. The Blue Angels base their selection of officers on professional ability, military bearing and communication skills. Blue Angels officers are well-rounded representatives of their fleet counterparts. Officers typically serve two years with the team. Blue Angels officers return to the fleet after their tours of duty. The mission of the Blue Angels is to showcase the pride and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps by inspiring a culture of excellence and service to country through flight demonstrations and community outreach.

History’s on Display at Patuxent River Naval Air Museum By Dick Myers Editor

Looking for a perfect way to absorb Patuxent River Naval Air Station’s 75-year history? Look no farther than just ouside the base’s Gate 1, where the new Patuxent River Naval Air Museum (PRNAM) sits proudly with a flightline of 22 aircraft just outside its doors. The museum has been open in its new quarters along Route 235 for about 18 months. It’s in front of the building that had previously housed the museum, and which is now being renovated for collections and other uses. The museum is new in more than just the building. According to the museum’s website, “It is no longer an official U.S. Navy museum following federal budget restructuring. The Museum is now a private, non-profit (501C(3)) organization working in conjunction with St Mary’s County. With the recently completed construction of a multi-million dollar capital project that transformed the Museum, it is

now displaying the potential to become a premier cultural institution and economic driver for the county.“

The museum, however, is not new. It is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, paralleling the base’s landmark 75th birthday. Exhibits inside the museum trace the base’s timeline from before construction began, to the commissioning ceremony on April 1, 1943 to the present day. So how is the museum different? According to their website: “When compared to other aviation-focused museums, PRNAM is unique in terms of its collections and mission. Whereas most aviation museums focus on operational aircraft and exhibits, PRNAM focuses on the research, development, test and evaluation environment. Ideas and concepts that were developed and introduced to the Fleet form the basis of its interpretive program. PRNAM also displays concepts that never made it to the Fleet that makes the museum’s

collection all the more unique. Artifacts and simulators, films and books spanning the history of Naval Aviation topped off with a display of 22 one-of-a-kind aircraft.” The museum features an extensive collection of flight test and naval artifacts ranging from ejection seats and weapons to unmanned aerial vehicles and full-size aircraft. The following aircraft are on display: • McDonnell Douglas NA-4M Skyhawk • North American RA-5C Vigilante • Grumman NA-6E Intruder • LTV NA-7A Corsair II • McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II • Douglas NF-6A(F4D) Skyray • Grumman F9F-8B Cougar • Grumman F-14A Tomcat • McDonnell Douglas NF/A-18A Hornet

According to the museum, “Currently, two simulators are operating at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. They offer the museum customer an opportunity to experience flight in real F-14 cockpits as you take control of the airplane that you select. You see, once in the cockpit you can choose between any one of several types of airplanes; such as an F-14 Tomcat, an F/A-18 Hornet, an A-10 Warthog, a P-51 Mustang, or how about a larger airplane

like a C-130 Hercules, plus many more. The flight simulators utilize stationary cockpits, but the aircraft can fly in the same airspace so if you come with a buddy, you both can fly at the same time or even go against each other as you both make arcs and loops in the sky. Do you want to launch and land on an aircraft carrier? You can do that, too. These simulators are extremely popular among children and adults of all ages.”

Q. Are there areas or times that I can’t drive on base during the 2018 Pax River Air Expo? 18

A. Yes. During activation of the Aerobatic Box – the air space in which performers of the 2018 Pax River Air Expo fly in during their practices and performances for the Air Expo – the buildings and roads under the Aerobatic Box must be clear of all but nonessential personnel as a safety precaution. Vehicle traffic on Cedar Point, Bronson, Young, Saunders, Johnson, Gammill, McCauley, Trimble, and McClanan Roads will be restricted along those portions that lie within the Aerobatic Box during Aerobatic Box activation. Security may allow vehicles and pedestrians to transit on a case by case basis in between acts but only when cleared by the Air Expo Air Boss. At no time shall vehicles be allowed to transit through the Aerobatic Box without Air Boss clearance during the Air Expo, or while planes are flying. Drivers should expect delays during aerobatic performances. The Aerobatic Box is scheduled to be activated at the following times: • Thursday, May 31 11:45 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. • Friday, June 1 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. • Saturday, June 2 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. • Sunday, June 3 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Q. I plan on boating in the area of the Aerobatic Box during its activation. Can I transit through the Aerobatic Box on the water? A. No; boaters and other waterborne spectators must also remain outside of the Aerobatic Boxes during the times indicated above. Buoys will mark the boundaries of the boxes in the water. Security and Port Ops will coordinate with the U.S. Coast Guard to keep the water area inside the marker buoys clear of all vessels, swimmers and watercraft.
