The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce is committed to provide excellence in service, information, and opportunities. Our Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors are dedicated to collaborating with our members to establish a thriving and expanding business community.

This Community Guide is one of many ways your Chamber promotes your business and St. Mary’s County to fellow members, potential customers, employers, and visitors to St. Mary’s County. This guide is a treasure trove of useful information about St. Mary’s County and your Chamber.

Your Chamber also hosts events where you have the opportunity to promote your business through participation and sponsorships. A Business Showcase allows members to highlight their products and services for fellow business members and the public. Our Annual Business Awards Luncheon honors member-selected award recipients. In the fall, your Chamber hosts the Taste of St. Mary’s which is held in historic downtown Leonardtown. This event celebrates our hospitality sector. Restaurants, caterers, and food trucks showcase their menu items to our members and the public. The Chamber’s Business After Hours, held monthly, allow the member hosts to highlight the services of their business. Each event includes refreshments, door prizes, and 50/50 raffles to support our scholarship fund. In 2023, we awarded scholarships to two of our local high school students.

Your Chamber also advocates for the business community through a variety of activities. Our Government Affairs Committee reviews proposed legislation during the annual General Assembly of Maryland. We hold a Legislative gathering each spring after the session. At this gathering, the Senator and Delegates representing St. Mary’s County provide updates on the issues they have dealt with in Annapolis and what may be forthcoming. We also sponsor an annual State of the County Luncheon, where St. Mary’s County Commissioners update the business community on the activities of county government and answer questions from the audience. We sponsor a similar event for the St. Mary’s County Public Schools, the State of the Schools Luncheon, where the Superintendent and his staff brief the business community on the school system.

The Chamber organizes various events including the Annual Golf Outing where the winning team is awarded the prestigious Chamber Cup. Additionally, the Chamber Ambassadors organize ribbon cutting ceremonies to celebrate the launch or expansion of businesses. In 2023, we teamed up with the Calvert County Chamber of Commerce to co-host our second annual regional Women-2-Women summit. All these events are great networking opportunities to meet fellow members, as well as new customers. Be on the lookout for more upcoming events!

Through its interaction with the St. Mary’s County Government, the State of Maryland, and the Federal Government, your Chamber is the voice of the business community. The Chamber prides itself on its outstanding reputation for promoting local businesses and St. Mary’s County. Chamber of Commerce

The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary, non-profit business association promoting education, tourism, and local job growth, without partisanship or public funding, since 1974.

We help local, state, and federal governments balance the needs of today’s economy with environmentally sound policies honoring our rural heritage and over 375 years of Maryland history.

We seek proactive, community-based improvements to infrastructure, economic development, workforce housing, and our rural landscape. We convene and join local task forces to explore and implement innovative programs for St. Mary’s County. We speak for our members as laws, ordinances, local codes, and other issues are reviewed and implemented.

The Chamber works with the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board, TriCounty Council for Southern Maryland, the Southern Maryland Economic Development Association, Southern Maryland Naval Alliance, and other organizations to give members valuable resources and timely information.

Chamber members include more than 400 small and mid-sized businesses in retail, construction, wholesale, service industries and defense contracting. The Board of Directors, joined by member volunteers, serves the business and professional community.

STATE OF ST MARY’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS

This annual event, held in November, features the St. Mary’s County Public Schools Superintendent and other school officials. The business and educational community come together to hear the School Superintendent present statistical data on the schools, student progress, new programs, and initiatives to enhance educational opportunities in the

County’s public school system.

STATE OF THE COUNTY

The Board of County Commissioners presents an overview of the county’s current and future challenges at this well-attended, annual Chamber event. Chamber members are invited to participate and provide input on the current status and challenges the County will face in the coming years.

St. Mary’s County has a thriving economy fueled by a diverse private sector and innovation. We are committed to assisting and promoting all businesses in the county, focusing on aviation/ aerospace, unmanned Naval aircraft systems (UAS), advanced manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture/aquaculture. We aim to maintain an excellent quality of life for our diverse and skilled workforce.

The primary source of economic prosperity in St. Mary’s County is the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, also known as “Pax River.” Pax River and St. Mary’s are well-known for excellent work in aviation, unmanned aircraft systems, and advanced manufacturing and aircraft modification industries. There are more than 200 hightech aerospace and defense companies in our county, and we have the country’s highest number of aerospace engineers per capita. These industries generate a whopping $7.5 billion in economic output, which helps to improve the quality of life for the diverse and skilled workforce.

St. Mary’s County’s second-largest employer, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, employs medical and other professionals through its expanding facilities. Eldercare, nursing, healthcare facilities, and physicians’ groups provide additional employment opportunities.

St. Mary’s County also hosts researchers, conservationists, small business owners, and local, state, and federal employees. With a median age of 36.5, our population is ready to contribute to a growing workforce.

The St. Mary’s County Public Schools offer positions for educators, administrators, and support staff. Residents can access great local education institutions from pre-K through post-graduate learning opportunities. 91.7% of residents hold a high school diploma or higher, while 32.2% possess a bachelor’s degree or higher.

The AeroPark Innovation District, emerging in and around our regional airport, is home to:

Housing

Newcomers to the housing market will not find it to be “one size fits all.” The diversity is impressive. St. Mary’s County has many housing options to offer, from single-family detached homes to townhouses and condominiums. Affordable apartments are located across the county, while new construction makes renting or owning a home possible for young families.

The same goes for location. There are waterfront homes, homes in farm areas, existing homes, new construction, and planned communities. There is housing for just about

any price range.

According to U.S. Census figures, St. Mary’s County is home to over 114,000 residents, with over 46,000 housing units, making it one of Maryland’s fastest-growing areas, with available housing for residents at every economic level. The median value of owner-occupied units from 2017-2021 was $326,800. New construction continues to develop throughout the county, mostly in planned neighborhoods.

Housing values in St. Mary’s County remain much more stable than in other parts

of the region. The Housing Authority of St. Mary’s County offers assistance for home ownership or rental options to citizens in need. Military housing has primarily moved to privately developed communities close to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Lexington Park. Some residents live in St. Mary’s and commute to neighboring Washington, D.C., Charles, Calvert, or Prince George’s Counties for work.

In St. Mary’s County, we work to accommodate the diverse housing needs of our residents while enhancing their quality of life.

st. Mary’s County has been governed by county commissioners since 1838. The members of the Board of County Commissioners, including the Commissioner President, are elected to four-year terms by the entire county voting population. Four commissioners must live in the district they represent; the Commissioner President may live anywhere in the County. Residents also vote for other critical governmental positions such as Judges, the Sheriff, the State’s Attorney, etc.

St. Mary’s Transit System (STS) Bus STS buses transport approximately 30,000 riders each month. There are multiple scheduled “fixed routes” in place across the county. In addition, there is a Sunday service between the Great Mills and California areas. There is also a “dial-a-ride” service for people living in rural areas not generally served by the STS fixed routes.

St. Mary’s County’s main roads connect to US 301 and I-95. Just 85 miles north from downtown Leonardtown, the 50-foot channel port of Baltimore is a leading U.S. automobile and break-bulk port with five public terminals, including a state-of-the-art container terminal.

Captain Walter Francis Duke Terminal at St. Mary’s County Regional Airport St. Mary’s County’s regional airport accommodates aircraft over 12,500 pounds. Most flights are small, single-engine airplanes; mid-size corporate jets with up to twelve passengers also find it convenient for business travel.

Small airports within a thirty-mile radius of Washington, DC now operate under “safety zone” restrictions. Our airport is outside that zone, making it convenient for travelers with business beyond St. Mary’s. The airport has added several larger industrial hangars for corporate aircraft over the past years.

The Forrest Center offers high school students the opportunity to learn the information and skills used in one of twenty-four specific career areas. Upon completing a program, students can enter the workforce or continue their education at a technical school, two-year college, or four-year university.

ACADEMIES

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy provides an academically rigorous program with a strong emphasis in these core courses. The STEM program is open to all SMCPS students and held at Spring Ridge Middle School and Great Mills High School. These schools were selected to house the STEM program because of their proximity to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and area defense contractors.

The Academy of Finance at Chopticon High School launched with the freshman class of 2008-09 and prepares students for finance related college courses and careers. Students from across the county are eligible to attend, studying banking, insurance, financial planning, business administration, sales, budget analysis and advertising. Internships with local participating businesses and extracurricular activities round out the program.

Leonardtown High School launched the Global and International Studies program for high school students in the 20092010 school year. The rigorous program emphasizes world culture, current events, history, and world languages.

The Academy of Visual and Preforming Arts (AVPA), housed at Chopticon High School launched in the 2014-2015 school year, is a pathway that strives to support our population of talented youth who excel in the arts. AVPA meets

the needs of our highly abled arts inspired youth who exhibit desire and motivation to pursue higher levels of achievement and learning in the arts students participating in the AVPA will have a choice of one of three areas of focus: music theatre, or visual arts. Hospice of St. Mary’s

Hospice of St. Mary’s focuses on patient and family-centered end-of-life care that addresses the physical, emotional, spiritual, and practical needs of patients. Environmental Health

SMCHD’s Environmental Health Division addresses the health impact of environmental factors in our community. It works to prevent illness born from poor water quality, contaminated soils, unsafe food, and other community environmental health hazards (such as rabies). The Environmental Health Division offers food safety classes, conducts licensed food service inspections, receives applications for the construction or expansion of individual septic systems, tests and monitors local beach and public pool water quality, and conducts perc testing for the construction of residential and commercial septic systems. Additionally, the Environmental Health Division monitors local air quality through the BreatheWell program and maintains a local air quality monitoring dashboard.

Chronic Disease Prevention & Control

SMCHD’s efforts in chronic disease prevention and control include promoting tobacco retailers and tobacco prevention education as well as offering tobacco cessation resources and classes. SMCHD coordinates care and connects residents to local behavioral health resources, such as mental health and substance use treatment and recovery services. The Behavioral Health Division also offers programs to raise awareness and educate the community about mental health, substance misuse, stigma, and other behavioral health topics. Maternal, Child, & Elder Health Unit

Children’s Health Program (MCHP) and educating individuals on their insurance benefits - including education and outreach to Medical Assistance recipients. The unit provides support and service programs to women, children, and the elderly including the Nurse-Family Partnership, an evidence-based home health initiative that provides first-time parents health and wellness support services during their pregnancy and into the first two years of their child’s life, and the Thrive By Three program which helps ensure pregnant moms in St. Mary’s County have access to adequate, effective, and equitable healthcare.
