• Our Governmental Affairs committee works through every bill presented in the 90-day legislative session protecting our business interests. We meet weekly during the session January through April.
• Business After Hours: Unwind after a busy day at our very popular monthly 4th Wednesday evening mixers. These events offer a relaxed atmosphere for networking and
making new connections at area businesses locations that graciously offer refreshments. These are booked months in advance so you can see how popular they are.
• Annual Business Expo: Showcase your products and services at our Business Expo. This was recently held during our Annual Business Awards Luncheon.
• New Member Luncheons: Join us for lunch with influential community leaders, board members, new and seasoned members who share their experiences and advice on leadership, innovation, and business success within the chamber.
• Women’s Business Lunch: Provides increased visibility and opportunity for women to become informed through communication and collaboration with leaders to share expertise and leadership.
• Educational Workshops: Our state of the Schools and County luncheons are well attended and provide an insight to how our elected leaders are doing with the county and education.
• National Civics Bee®: Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust™, the competition in St. Mary’s County inspires middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.

Traditions and Progress
The goals of the St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce are to advance the economic, industrial, professional, cultural, and civic welfare of the County; to encourage the growth of existing industries, businesses, and organizations, and to provide assistance to new firms and individuals seeking to establish businesses and non-profit organizations.
The Chamber was incorporated as a 501(c)(6) in 1974. We are a voluntary, non-profit business association that promotes leadership, advocacy, education, and networking without partisanship or public funding. Since 1974, the Chamber has worked diligently with local government, education, private industry and a host of other agencies and organizations to improve the business environment and promote St. Mary’s County as a premier community in which to live, work and do business. We strive to foster a sense of community that can come together to solve problems, catalyze change, and support the long-term
health of a diverse and thriving community. Our members include corporations, all businesses, associations, nonprofits and individual professionals.
We help local, state, and federal governments balance the needs of today’s economy with environmentally sound policies that honor our rural heritage and over 375 years of Maryland history. We convene and join local task forces to explore and implement innovative programs for St. Mary’s County. We engage our members to
add their voices as laws, ordinances, local codes, and other business issues are reviewed and implemented.
We seek proactive, community-based improvements to our infrastructure, economic development, workforce housing, and our rural landscape.
The Chamber works with the Maryland Small Business Development Center (SBDC), Southern Maryland Workforce Investment Board, Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, the Southern Maryland Economic Development Association, Southern Maryland Naval Alliance, and other organizations to give members valuable resources and timely information.
The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce is a member of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Association of Chambers of Commerce Executives, and the Maryland Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.

TASTE OF ST. MARY’S
• This family friendly event is held annually on the square in Historic Leonardtown. Food and beverage businesses take part in these events to show off their specialties. Please come and cast your vote! There will be children’s activities, live music, and shops to explore, too!
STATE OF ST. MARY’S COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
• This annual event, held in November, features the St. Mary’s County Public Schools Superintendent and other school officials. The business and educational community come together to hear the School Superintendent present statistical data on the student progress and new programs.
NATIONAL CIVICS BEE®
• Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust™, the competition in St. Mary’s County inspires middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.

Economy and Workforce
St. Mary’s County has a thriving economy fueled by a diverse private sector and innovation. We are committed to assisting and promoting all businesses in the county, focusing on aviation/ aerospace, unmanned Naval aircraft systems (UAS), advanced manufacturing, tourism, and agriculture/ aquaculture. We aim to maintain an excellent quality of life for our diverse and skilled workforce.
The primary source of economic prosperity in St. Mary’s County is the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, also known as “Pax River.” Pax River and St. Mary’s are well-known for excellent work in aviation, unmanned aircraft systems, and advanced manufacturing and aircraft modification industries. There are more than 200 high-tech aerospace and defense companies in our county, and we have the country’s highest number of aerospace engineers per capita. These industries
generate a whopping $4.8 billion in economic output, which helps to improve the quality of life for the diverse and skilled workforce.
St. Mary’s County’s second-largest employer, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, employs medical and other professionals through its expanding facilities. Eldercare, nursing, healthcare facilities, and physicians’ groups provide additional employment opportunities.

Government, Transportation, and Utilities
St. Mary’s County has been governed by county commissioners since 1838. The members of the Board of County Commissioners, including the Commissioner President, are elected to four-year terms by the county voting population. Four commissioners must live in the district they represent; the Commissioner President may live anywhere in the County. RECREATION AND PARKS
St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks organizes personal enrichment and exercise classes, sports teams for all ages, before-and-after school care for students, and summer camps for children and the disabled.
There are plenty of public facilities available to meet your needs. These facilities cater to physical activities such as gymnastics, swimming, tennis, pickle ball, golf, soccer, and playgrounds. There are also public landings for boaters and recreational fishermen. STS buses transport approximately 30,000 riders each month. There are multiple scheduled “fixed routes” in

Our airport is outside that zone, making it convenient for travelers with business beyond St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) offer education from full day kindergarten through twelfth grades for 17,214 students. The Forrest Center offers high school students the opportunity to learn the information and skills used in one of twenty-four specific career areas. Upon completing a program, students can enter the workforce or continue their education at a technical school, two-year college, or four-year university.
ACADEMIES
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy provides an academically rigorous program with a strong emphasis on these core courses. The STEM program is open to all SMCPS students and held at Spring Ridge Middle School and Great Mills High School. These schools were selected to house the STEM program because of their proximity to the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and area defense contractors.
The Academy of Finance at Chopticon High School launched with the freshman class of 2008-09 and prepares students for finance-related college courses and careers. Students from across the county are eligible to attend, studying banking, insurance, financial planning, business administration, sales, budget analysis and advertising. Internships with local participating businesses and extracurricular activities round out the program.
Leonardtown High School launched the Global and International Studies program for high school students in the 2009-2010 school year. The rigorous program emphasizes world culture, current events, history, and world languages.
The Academy of Visual and Preforming Arts (AVPA), housed at Chopticon High School, launched in the 2014-2015 school year. This pathway strives to support our population of talented youth who excel in the arts. AVPA meets the needs of our highly abled arts inspired youth who exhibit desire and motivation to pursue higher levels of achievement and learning in the arts. The St. Mary’s County housing market is much like that across the nation. There is short supply making demand strong and keeping the prices high. Although supply is short currently, the inventory is trending upwards. The diversity of homes provides many options such as single-family detached homes to townhouses and condominiums. The area boasts many apartment complexes for those that may decide to rent before purchasing or maybe build a home.
St. Mary’s County is nestled between two bodies of water, the Patuxent River and the Potomac River, making waterfront homes a valuable resource. We also have area farms and planned communities in various price ranges.
According to U.S. Census figures, St. Mary’s County is home to approximately 114,000 residents, with approximately 46,000 housing units, making it one of
Maryland’s fastest-growing areas, with available housing for residents at every economic level. The median value of owner-occupied units from 2018-2022 was $376,900. New construction continues to develop throughout the county, mostly in planned neighborhoods.

The St. Mary’s County Health Department (SMCHD) is the local health department for St. Mary’s County, Maryland. SMCHD is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of all St. Mary’s County residents. The health department delivers various services to the community based on local health needs and federal, state, and county regulations. As the county’s leader in public health, the agency is committed to ensuring that community members have access to personal and environmental health services and information.

HEALTH CLINIC
Our health clinic provides a variety of clinical services for the community. This includes immunizations through Vaccines for Children for eligible residents 18 and under, reproductive health services, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections - some results are available in as little as 20 minutes, and cancer screening.
Insurance is billed for services provided, and an incomebased sliding scale is available for those without insurance. No one will be turned away for inability to pay.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
SMCHD’s Environmental Health Division addresses the health impact of environmental factors in our community. It works to prevent illness born from poor water quality, contaminated soils, unsafe food, and other community environmental health hazards (such as rabies). The Environmental Health Division offers food safety classes, conducts licensed food service inspections, receives applications for the construction or expansion of individual septic systems, tests and monitors local beach and public pool water quality, and conducts perc testing for the construction of residential and commercial septic systems. Additionally, the Environmental Health Division monitors local air quality through the BreatheWell program and maintains a local air quality monitoring dashboard.
CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION & CONTROL
SMCHD’s efforts in chronic disease prevention and control include promoting tobacco retailers and prevention education, as well as offering tobacco cessation resources and classes. The Chronic Disease unit also offers a youth asthma and lead home visiting program as well as an emergency dental program.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH
SMCHD’s Behavioral Health Division oversees the system of behavioral health (mental health and substance use) prevention, treatment, and recovery support for St. Mary’s County. SMCHD provides care coordination and connects residents to local behavioral health resources, such as mental health and substance use treatment and recovery services. The Behavioral Health Division also offers programs to raise awareness and educate the community about mental health, substance misuse, stigma, and other behavioral health topics. SMCHD also offers a variety of behavioral health crisis and response services, including crisis support walk-in services at the St. Mary’s County Health Hub and a local Warmline that offers callers emotional support and is staffed by trained phone counselorsavailable at 410-768-5522.
VIOLENCE, INJURY, & TRAUMA (VIT)
Health Care
SMCHD’s VIT unit works with community partners to address violence, injury, and trauma prevention needs and to bring awareness to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and gun violence prevention. The VIT unit also offers the St Mary’s County Mentoring Exchange. This digital platform provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to explore youth mentoring programs and events in the St. Mary’s County community and connects local youth mentoring programs with resources to support their work.
MATERNAL, CHILD, & ELDER HEALTH UNIT
SMCHD’s Maternal, Child, & Elder Health Unit focuses on enrolling individuals into health insurance programs such as the Maryland Children’s Health Program (MCHP) and educating individuals on their insurance benefits - including education and outreach to Medical Assistance recipients. The unit provides support and service programs to women, children, and the elderly, including the Nurse-Family Partnership, an evidence-based home health initiative that provides first-time parents health and wellness support services during their pregnancy and into the first two years of their child’s life, and the Thrive By Three program which helps ensure pregnant moms in St. Mary’s County have access to adequate, effective, and equitable healthcare.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE PREVENTION & CONTROL
SMCHD’s Infectious Disease Program monitors, investigates, and responds to infectious disease cases in St. Mary’s County that can potentially become larger public health concerns. The program also ensures that community members have access to accurate and timely information about infectious diseases, including emerging infectious agents. The program works closely with local healthcare providers and facilities to manage outbreaks and to ensure appropriate prevention, diagnosis, and treatment practices are implemented in St. Mary’s County.

The St. Mary’s County Health Hub is a vital facility in the community that aims to remove barriers to accessing critical mental and physical health services. The facility offers a variety of services, including behavioral health screening, the Harm Reduction Program, walk-in crisis counseling, jail diversion programs for substance use treatment and recovery, and primary care medical services. SMCHD has partnered with a wide variety of community organizations to offer additional services at the Health Hub, including community mediation, youth mentoring, and legal, financial, and employment services.

The St. Mary’s County Health Department opened two school-based health centers in partnership with St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS). The SBHCs are available for treating acute illnesses, such as flu, and chronic conditions, including asthma and diabetes, as well as sports physicals and screenings for dental, vision, and hearing problems. Rapid onsite laboratory services are available, including COVID-19, flu, RSV, and strep throat testing. Appointments are encouraged; however, walk-ins will be accepted as availability allows.
