Search for ancient fossils on So. Maryland beaches Beach finds are always interesting, but picking up a fossil that might be more than 10 million years old is a special experience. There are several public places in Southern Maryland to search for ancient fossils. The cliffs in our region hold millions of years of sediment full of layers of fossils,

which wash out into the rivers and Chesapeake Bay as the cliffs erode, then back onto the beach, waiting to be found. Fossils here include the teeth of several types of sharks, from megalodon to tiger sharks, as well as whale vertebrae, ray plates and hundreds more.
