Music in the open air August signals the unofficial end of summer, a last hurrah before children get back in the grind of school, the last taste of sweet freedom and summer sun. Southern Maryland offers lovers of sun, sunsets and balmy evening air a series of outdoor concerts for all ages. The weekend of Aug. 7 and 8 brings the 27th year of L’il Margaret’s Bluegrass & Old Time Music Festival at the Goddard Farm, with 11 bands from throughout North America. Joseph Goddard, one of the event organizers, said the original idea for the festival was to honor and keep the memory of his daughter alive, hence the name L’il Margaret. The entire event is a family affair, with everyone pitching in throughout the year to find bands, advertise and even prepare all the home-cooked food for sale. “We got a real good setup,” Goddard said, describing the covered pavilion where the bands perform, as well as other permanent structures that allow shade during meals, and rest rooms. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own chairs, but the music could easily move you to get up and dance. Goddard said there’s plenty of room for camping. Alcohol is prohibited in the concert area, and Goddard said no one gets overly rowdy, but everyone simply enjoys the music and the camaraderie. After 27 years, it’s almost like a family reunion. “We do have some good music and good fellowship,” he said. The festival is at 21810 Clay Hill Road in Leonardtown. Tickets are $25 Friday and $30 Saturday to cover costs of hosting the festival. Call 301-475-8191, or go to lilmargaretsbluegrass.wordpress.com. Starting at 6 p.m. Aug. 8, the town of North Beach will host its final free Concerts on the Beach event of the summer. Featuring the Beach Bumz Band, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, on the pavilion of the boardwalk, chairs will be set up for concertgoers to enjoy the music. However, Dawn Richardson, marketing and public relations coordinator for North Beach, mentioned that many people like to bring beach chairs and listen to music on the beach, or even get up and dance when the mood strikes. There will be a beer truck nearby, and parking is available across the street from the boardwalk. Go to www.northbeachmd.org or call 301-855-6681 or 410-257-9618.
At 7 p.m. Aug. 21, the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department will host country music artist Jake Owen. The Bayside Pavilion, a smaller concert venue, gives patrons a chance to enjoy a more personal performance from their favorite artists. Roberta Baker, the fundraising chairwoman for the fire department, who has been coordinating these concerts for the past 11 years, noted many people return every year and have become familiar faces. All profits from the concert go to the fire department, and everyone who works at the concert is a volunteer — from the production crew to the ticket takers at the gate and ushers who help concertgoers find their assigned seats. Tickets range in price, but may be purchased at the firehouse or at ticketmaster.com. Go to www. slvfd.org or call 410-586-1713. St. Charles has three free concerts remaining on its Thursday night schedule at O’Donnell Lake in Waldorf. The U.S. Navy Commodores will perform Aug. 13, the U.S. Air Force’s Max Impact on Aug. 20 and Tomorrow’s Time on Aug. 27. Concerts start at 7 p.m. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. Go to www.stcharlesmd.com. Ongoing concerts for August include the town of La Plata’s Friday night concerts, from 7 to 9 p.m. Located on the town hall lawn, live music includes the 257th Army Band on Aug. 7, U.S. Air Force Band Max Impact on Aug. 14, Eric Scott (an acoustic soul and pop artist) on Aug. 21 and the Southern Maryland Concert Band on Aug. 28. Patrons are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs, and there is a play area for children, as well as concessions. Call 301-934-8421 and then select #7 for special events, or email cwilson@ townoflaplata.org. On Aug. 22, Leonardtown continues its Downtown Tunes series in the town square featuring local musicians from 6 to 9 p.m. (Rain date is the next day.) Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Call 301-475-9791. File photo by REID SILVERMAN

Simply Zee Best
Sisters operate St. Mary’s cafe with ‘total trust’ in each other Southern Maryland is known for its small, locally owned cafés, some of which are hidden in plain sight, like Zee’s Best Café and Carryout. Located in the Laurel Grove Station building just in front of Laurel Grove Park (a couple miles north of Loveville Road on the southbound side of Route 235 in St. Mary’s County), the café will be celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. Co-owned and operated by sisters Julie Vance and Jennifer Stewart, Zee Best Café opened its doors Aug. 1, 2014. The sisters are used to working together, having previously co-owned the Bryantown Store, which they sold in 2012. After that, Stewart was working at Johnny Boy’s Ribs and Vance took a break, but it wasn’t long before the two began brainstorming ways to work together again. “It’s a good match because she has a passion for cooking, and I do better with the paperwork,” Stewart said. It’s a good fit, Vance added, noting they have “total trust” in each other. The sisters began searching for open buildings to start a restaurant and found the Laurel Grove Station building available and “adorable,” as Stewart said. They gave the interior a facelift with refinished floors, new paint, a scrubbedclean kitchen and brand-new, homey decorations. The building does have limited seating, and thus, the café has a staff of only nine, who are never
all there at one time. Vance said they originally started with four staffers, including the sisters. Business started out slowly simply because of the location — they’re not near a shopping destination, for example. But business steadily increased as new patrons became loyal, repeat customers. As Vance and Stewart explained the restaurant’s origins one day recently, diners steadily entered and greeted the sisters as if they were all part of the same large family. Both smiled warmly at everyone, asking about their health, spouses, family. “We have lots of regulars,” Stewart said. “We’ve made a lot of new friends,” Vance added. Stewart pointed to the differing salt and pepper shakers on each table, and then pointed at several more eclectic shakers sitting on a shelf by the register. She noted customers have been bringing in a variety of mismatched shakers to add to the café’s collection. At the next table over, the Khanna family — dad Amit, mom Cristina, 3-yearold Evelyn and 2-year-old Alex — began to dig into their meal. Cristina said they’re repeat customers because the food is always fresh. Amit said they enjoy
Zee Best so much that they threw Alex’s second birthday party there. The food is made fresh — everything on the menu is made in the kitchen, all the way down to the onion rings and crunchy potato chips. The menu is limited, but was crafted by Vance and Stewart to feature both staples (burger and fries) and something different (snakehead fish bites). The lunch and dinner menu also features barbecue smoked on-site, from pulled pork sandwiches to a slab of ribs. Subs include steak and cheese, hot ham and cheese, and shrimp po boy. And the “everyday favorites” feature classics like an open-faced hot turkey. Zee Best also serves breakfast on weekends, with fan-favorite classics like Belgian waffles and French toast, along with mimosas and Bloody Marys. But diners should also check the specials chalkboard because it changes daily and features a tasty spin on classics, such as a fried green tomato BLT sandwich. Zee Best also is known for its take-out. Vance said they’re always willing to put together a carryout order. The café will take reservations, but it can be tricky to keep tables open in the small building. In the fall, the café will offer a wild game special once a week — venison, duck and wild boar.
Signature dishes STEAK AND CHEESE SUB Served on a grilled roll with choice of onions, lettuce, tomato, hot pepper relish and pickles. $8.99 ONION RINGS Made fresh $3.99 OPEN-FACED HOT TURKEY Fresh turkey on two slices of bread covered with gravy and served with mashed potatoes, vegetable. $10.99
If you go For more information on Zee Best Café or to find out the daily specials, call 240249-6012, or go to www.facebook.com/ zeebestcafe. A second location opened last month: Zee Best Café Too at the Hawthorne Country Club in La Plata features the same type of home-cooked, fresh meals as the original location. “I’m so fortunate to be the guy who tries to show everyone a great time.”

People might know him as the tiedye guy, getting the crowd pumped up at Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball games. But Ron Lord’s formal title is on-field host, and he is now on his seventh season of entertaining the masses and volunteering with Pinch, the Blue Crabs mascot. So, what goes into the day-to-day routine for this high-energy host? Lord explained that Courtney Knichel, the club’s assistant general manager for marketing, plans and coordinates each game’s theme and entertainment well in advance. On game day, the “Blue Crew” — Lord and Austin Gore, who plays Pinch, along with Corrin Wagner, Maegan Simpson, Cindy Miller, Bradley Silvestro, Rebecca Jerome, Sara Armiger and Julie Vogel — all arrive an hour prior to the start of the game. During a production meeting, they go over the schedule of skits they will perform and roll the T-shirts for giveaways. That game’s national anthem singer, previously auditioned and scheduled, shows up at this point as well. From there, Lord and the crew stage the props they’ll use near various entrances to the field, allowing for easier, faster access. Lord combs the incoming fans for children to stand in line to give high fives to the team as the players run onto the field. Lord also recruits a “mini manager,” a child to accompany him out onto the field to tell jokes to the umpires and yell “play ball” to start the game. What sort of jokes? “How do you tickle an octopus?” Lord asked. After pausing a beat, he answered, “With tentacles. Get it? Ten tickles!” Then the first pitch is thrown, with Lord playing catcher for this moment. Once the game is underway, Lord watches for the second out, and the crew gets in position for its betweeninnings bit. Some favorite bits include the fruit race (where kids dress in fruit costumes and race each other) and the sumo fight (where two contestants
dress in large, inflatable suits and bump into each other). The selection of themed events changes depending on the evening. Lord mentioned the Chick-fil-A-sponsored Backfin Buddies on Sunday nights and Hearing Professionalssponsored Silver Sluggers on Tuesday nights, where fans 50 and older receive a discount on tickets, and fireworks displays Friday and Saturday nights. Lord said his personal favorite part of the festivities is the Hero of the Game, where a veteran is recognized and honored by the entire stadium. The veterans have ranged from those who served during World War II to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and those servicemen and women who are part of the Wounded Warrior program. Community outreach is a big part of the Blue Crabs family. Lord visits the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home at least twice a week, and he and Pinch visit local schools to read to the kids and promote literacy. Many of the games themselves have community — from Relay For Life to Paint the Park Pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. It’s a family friendly environment, Lord said, a chance for people to sit with family and friends and have a social event. “I want people to really come and enjoy it,” Lord added. “I’m so fortunate to be the guy who tries to show everyone a great time.” His energy is unceasing as he runs up and down every inch of the ballpark, talking with fans, getting the crowd pepped up by starting cheers and the wave, and engaging in antics with Pinch during each game. This includes doubleheaders, which occasionally can run up to 20 innings in overtime. For each appearance Lord also coordinates a tie-dye shirt, which he’s typically made himself, so be on the lookout at Blue Crabs games for the tie-dye guy.

Receives Bronze National Quality Award
Maryland center recognized by national program for commitment to quality care -(Lexington Lexington Park, MD MD) – Chesapeake Shores has been recognized as a 2015 recipient of the Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award for its dedication to improving the lives of residents through quality care. The award is the first of three distinctions possible through the National Quality Award Program, presented by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL). The program honors centers across the nation that have demonstrated their commitment to improving quality care for seniors and individuals with disabilities. “It is a great honor to be recognized by AHCA/NCAL with a National Quality Award,” said Kelly Friedman, Administrator of Chesapeake Shores Shores. “Improving the lives of the residents and families we care for every day is what brings us joy. This award symbolizes the dedication and commitment we have to the quality journey.” Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. The program assists providers of long term and post-acute care services in achieving their performance excellence goals. The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Centers begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level, where they develop an organizational profile with essential performance elements such as vision and mission statements and an assessment of customers’ expectations. Bronze applicants must also demonstrate their ability to implement a performance improvement system. Trained Examiners review each Bronze application to determine if the center has met the demands of the criteria. As a recipient of the Bronze - Commitment to Quality Award, Chesapeake Shores may now move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria required for the Silver - Achievement in Quality Award. “Chesapeake Chesapeake Shores has demonstrated its commitment to providing quality care and I commend them for that,” said the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Christine Boldt. “I encourage Chesapeake Shores to continue their quality journey by striving for the Silver and Gold levels.” The awards are sponsored by AHCA/NCAL Associate Business Members My InnerView, by National Research Corporation and PointRight. My InnerView represents the true voice of nursing home and assisted living residents, families, and employees with the most insightful quality measurement solutions and satisfaction surveys in the healthcare continuum. PointRight is the recognized leader in data-driven analytics for health care and insurance. Chesapeake Shores was one of 545 centers to receive the Bronze level award.

Ed/Doug, Just wanted to thank you again for our new custom built home. This is the second of two homes that Middleton Builders has built for us and I just wanted to take a minute and express our gratitude for a job well done. Seeing that I am no stranger to the construction industry, Superintendent with over 30+ years of experience in construction and wood working, I know quality work when I see it. As I have stated time and time again, “I could not have done a better job myself”. The generations of experience Doug and Ed have in the industry along with the personal touch of one on one oversight of a project is second to none. I would strongly recommend that if you are looking to build a new home, Middleton Builders is where to start. Thanks again, Gary and Terry Stroud southern maryland Weekends l August 2015
