WELCOME TO OUR FESTIVAL! Placing art at the heart of Somerset, investing in the arts community, enriching lives. SAW is an artist-led organisation and Somerset’s only countywide agency dedicated to developing visual arts, weaving together communities and supporting the artists who enrich our lives. We want Somerset to be a place where people expect to engage with excellent visual art that is surprising and distinctive. SAW creates Projects and offers Membership to support practicing artists and organisations in Somerset: providing bursaries, developing commissions, supporting collaborative working, providing networking and showcase opportunities, including our diverse annual Art Weeks event. Somerset Open Studios is back again! This year we have 208 venues and nearly 300 artists participating, showing a huge variety of work. Artists from every background and discipline will open up their studios places that are usually private working environments, what a privilege to be allowed in! Each year, Somerset Open Studios also works with individuals, organisations and schools to develop the event. We are delighted to work with King’s School Bruton and Bruton School for Girls to offer new and exciting work from a growing generation of artistic talent. We are also thrilled to be working with Bruton Art Factory, who will host ‘Colony Room Club Somerset’ - the official Somerset Open Studios Festival Club. A taster of the legendary Soho drinking den comes to Somerset where every bohemian from Bacon to Hirst, Emin to Freud passed from the Guilded Gutter onto the green carpet. It will be running events, talks and discussions daily, see venue 10, page 13 for more details. Don’t miss this year’s incredibly talented Creative Pathways bursary winners, a professional development programme for SAW member artists, see page 5. Also look out for Alice Maddicott, this year developing her own touring ‘pop-up studio’ which will appear all over Somerset during Somerset Open Studios, see page 4. Photo: Nisha Haq

ECHO-MAKER FAMILY FRIENDLY OPEN STUDIOS During Somerset Open Studios 2016 most of the venues will be very happy to welcome families. You can be sure that venues with the Family Friendly logo are expecting visits from families. It also means they are doing their best to provide clear information and facilities for your family, some may also offer workshops and activities. However some venues may have limited facilities, so if you have specific needs please check with the venue before your visit.

Cranes and Communities Animation and Landscape project Devised by artist and animator Sean Harris in collaboration with Somerset Art Works, this unique project will see a mesmerising moving image artwork presented within a beacon in the landscape; the focus of a series of outdoor events taking place across the Somerset Levels and Moors at the end of the year. Taking the crane’s ability to transcend boundaries and fences as a metaphor, as it strives to come to terms with the vagaries of its environment, the project celebrates the free-flying creative impulse that resides in all human minds enabling new solutions and pathways to be found. For more information and details of forthcoming workshop opportunities see the project blog cranesandcommunities.wordpress.com EVENTS 2016 19 November: Thorney Lakes 10 December: Willows and Wetlands Visitor Centre Further dates to be announced

ALICE MADDICOTT Somerset is a county rich in varied landscapes, towns, villages and artistic communities. Our studios may be a room, a barn, a shed, somewhere we work alone or share our space with others. But beyond the walls there is a larger studio space; a space open to the elements and these variations of place; a space of inspiration, stories and materials – the county itself. As part of the Somerset Open Studios 2016 and as a continuation of SAW’s Momentum programme of exhibitions and commissions, artist and writer Alice Maddicott will be creating a literal open studio that will tour the county from 17th September to 2nd October. The open studio will set up in various interesting locations across the county. Wherever it appears, local artists and the general public are invited to come and create site-

4

specific work. They may bring their own materials, gather materials on site, work alone or collaboratively with Alice and other visitors. Alice will be there to encourage discussions and explorations of place and the concept of Somerset as studio, to collaborate and facilitate creatively, and to work with visitors to create a body of work that will evolve and develop throughout the Somerset Open Studios period.

www.somersetartworks.org.uk

There is no stipulation as to the medium of the work, just that it should be inspired by the location. Whether you are a painter, a filmmaker, a writer, a craftsperson or just curious, all will be welcome to participate: it is a truly open studio. As the tour develops and the work evolves, there will be a pop up structure that itself will become a work of art, a creative narrative, both transformed by Alice’s responses to the locations visited and stories heard, and by visitors who will be welcome to add to it, as well as creating standalone work they may wish to leave or take home. Throughout the event Alice will document the development and process of the work and upload it to the momentum website, which combined with the final structure will create a lasting record and interesting creative archive of the county and Somerset’s creative community at all levels. During Somerset Open Studios Alice will also be inviting school groups to participate and running workshops with young people.

ITINERARY TOURING OPEN STUDIO

Adam Grose, Elizabeth Caires & Dale Perrett, Sarah Hitchens and Veronia Gayle have been selected to receive CREATIVE PATHWAYS Bursaries this year to create a new body of work and to showcase them at temporary workspaces in Black Swan Arts, The Old Brick Workshop, The Emporium and Contains Art during Somerset Open Studios 2016. Each artist responds to the theme of ‘Momentumʼ in their chosen medium and with their own interpretation, representing the progression of their artistic endeavours. SAW’s CREATIVE PATHWAYS is a professional development programme aiming to provide tailor-made support for artist members in Somerset to develop their practice and to deliver high-quality work. This year’s programme is made possible with the funding support from the Arts Council England’s Lottery Programme and the in-kind support from the partnership venues/organisations. For more information please go to somersetartworks.org.uk/ saw-members/professionaldevelopment Visitors are welcome to see the selected artists working and meet them during Somerset Open Studios 2016. Limited editions of work will be available for purchase.

CREATIVE PATHWAYS POP-UPS

Elizabeth Caires & Dale Perrett Venue 34: THE EMPORIUM, YEOVIL Yeovil based artists Elizabeth Caires (illustrations, drawings, paintings) and Dale Perrett (paper models and illustrations) will be working collaboratively during the Open Studios event to craft a body of work which will combine their respective creative fields. Often fun and humorous, sometimes autobiographical and inviting for people of any age, they will be launching and displaying a collection of new work playing on the theme of the human impact on nature, exploring subject matters such as urbanisation, extinction and environmental negligence.

Sarah Hitchens

Adam Grose

Veronia Gayle

www.sarahhitchens.com Venue 74: BLACK SWAN ARTS Winner of the Marshwood Arts Ceramic Award in 2015, Sarah began her career in ceramics in 2012. A combination of being self-taught alongside taking classes from a master potter, she developed a unique technique and style to create ceramic sculptures using clay. Recently, she makes subtly figurative sculptures using hand-rolled slabs of clay to create torn, textured, primitive forms with roughly joined edges sometimes slightly bronzed, glazed or with contrasting white slip patterning. During the event, she will be displaying a new body of work as well as demonstrating the making process. She also invites visitors to get hands-on, involving make, touch and ‘play’.

www.adamgrose.com Venue 162: CONTAINS ART Adam gained an MA in Fine Art at Falmouth University, Cornwall. His work explores the role of mapping, inter-cultural exchange, the importance of diversity, aesthetics and their relationship to cultural identity. His work often combines scientific methods of observing and experimentation as well as inspiration from ancient mythology and tales. Through woodcuts, linocuts, etching and monotypes prints, he develops alternative ways of recording a journey. During the event Adam will occupy one of the studios at Contains Art to create a new body of work that is inspired by the surroundings of the venue, capturing his experience of walking and rambling.

www.veroniagayle.com Venue 202: THE OLD BRICK WORKSHOP Recently graduated with a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts from the University of the West of England, her practice is based on the experimental exploration of the ambiguous abstract nature of form, line and texture. She manipulates the 2D format to mimic a sculptural structure to imply the illusion of form, depth and movement. During the event, she will be working at one of the studios at The Old Brick Workshop and displaying a new body of work, which will include collages, paintings and drawings that are inspired by the surrounding area. Collage and printmaking workshops will also be running during Open Studios.

KING’S SCHOOL BRUTON ‘CONTINUITY’

9

PAINTING, PRINTS, DRAWING ‘Nature’ or ‘Nurture’? God given gift or learned skills? ‘Continuity’ is an exploration of creative and intellectual development. Just as with language there are distinct stages of artistic development most clearly demonstrated in the stages of drawing. This exhibition involves children from across the King’s Foundation, from the toddler to the teenager studying GCE A level art. It provides many fascinating insights into the intellectual and psychological development of young people. The journey evolves from early scribbles and schematic drawings, through the preadolescent crisis and beyond. In addition there will be an exhibition of other works from within the community. BRUTON ARTS FACTORY 4 SAW: I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING

10A

Four selected artists almost at their peak working in pop up studios at the Bruton Art Factory during Somerset Open Studios. MeMe Marey MeMe: Marey deals with emotional responses to events, situations and memories in her own life. Her paintings are worked and reworked through the use of paint or charcoal on canvas on paper. Mirabel Williams: By creating delicate flowerscapes Mirabel Williams attempts to freeze nature's process and preserve its beauty using pressed flowers, carefully tangled with thread. Sabrina Rowan Hamilton: Sabrina Rowan Hamilton is a painter, photographer, poet, curator and collaborator. She splits her time between London and Somerset finding inspiration in the spaces in between. Benjamin Lowsley-Williams: Principally a stone carver, Benjamin Lowsley-Williams also engages in all forms of sculpture as well as drawing and photography. In his recent carvings and geometric drawings, he explores the notion of symmetry in nature. These free form sculptures and calculated drawings bespeak a distinct dialect within a common language of geometry and stone carving. PAUL BRANSON, JOHN FLEMING, AND PAM MARTIN, RED BRICK BUILDING

99

PAINTING, PRINTS, DRAWING Redbrick Arts, creative and community centre, this year showcases three uniquely inspiring artists. Painter Paul Branson: ‘I see the world as a stage, as if viewed through a proscenium arch. First, I study in watercolour, in the open air. Back in my studio these are altered to simplified shapes and brighter colours’. Photographer John Fleming: ‘I will be setting up a traditional wet darkroom for you to witness fine black and white prints being made, and forgotten creative techniques employed’. Stitchmaker Pam Martin: ‘I am passionate about Somerset! My 2016 collection of stitched postcards shows marks left by past generations on our landscape. These engender a sense of home’.

CONTAINS ART, STUDIOS 3 AND 4 CERAMICS, PAINTINGS, PRINTMAKING

Sue Lowe’s work is concerned with layers and surfaces, drawing inspiration from landscape. The geology of the Watchet beaches is a current theme in her richlytextured, limited edition prints. Valerie Berry is also inspired by the textures and contours of the West Somerset coastline. Creating hand-built and wheel-thrown vessels alongside sculptural forms, with stoneware and terracotta clay. Georgina Towler uses paint to visually interpret and capture spaces, responding to the environments she encounters. Her paintings are not traditional observations but metaphorical and suggestive spaces - repositioning the landscape.

Wild open spaces are intensely exhilarating, yet equally humbling. This year my focus has been on the ever changing weather, experience and impact of the landscape. PAINTINGS

The paintings are personal journeys and slowly evolve, stroke by dab by flick, time over time until adding anything more would be superfluous. The love of the process, the fluidity of the materials, the visual joy of placing the colours and then the quiet delight when it all comes together keeps me going when, inevitably, it all goes to hell in a handbasket, destruction and creation is the name of the game. And occasionally, when I get out of the way for long enough, the paintings make themselves. 19 The Crescent, Taunton, TA1 4EB T: 07801 444811 E: earley.elizabeth@yahoo.com W: www.elizabethearley.com

JANE BROSSARD PAINTING

The subject of my paintings is generally recognisable but often there remains a degree of abstraction. It is that balance between figurative and abstract which I find exciting and is the element which pushes my work forward. Prices (including prints) range from £55 to £400. PAINTING, MIXED MEDIA, TEXTILES Haidee Hughes’ passion is to express spiritual truths from a Biblical perspective, inspiring reflection and thought. She paints intuitively using oils, with texture and depth inviting the viewer to encompass a spiritual pause. Sara Glanfield uses an eclectic mix of medium and subject to reflect her love of Somerset. She has produced an evocative collection of paintings and 3D pieces. SUE, STEPHANIE AND JEREMY CROCKETT

197

CERAMICS, PAINTINGS

Jeremy: I only came to potting in 2015 when I discovered Raku and smoke firing. I was enthused by the colours, invention, experimentation and mystery of the end product.
