What is Something Good? Wow. It's hard to believe it's been a year since we launched this little magazine with a (very lucky) shot of Michael Bublé on the cover.

of our place among the final three companies to be announced in the Nov. 25 gala dinner at the Tsawwassen Springs. Humbling would be an adjective understating how utterly privileged we felt to rub elbows with the finest and longest serving businesses of this great city.
Being given the opportunity to share the stories and capture the moments of this community in 2016 has been a tremendous joy, one we hope to continue into 2017. In early October we were surprised by an email indicating some thoughtful soul had enjoyed our magazine enough to nominate us for an award in the annual Delta Chamber of Commerce Hats off to Excellence Awards for Rising Star.

I must say, we felt very much like Cinderella at the ball. Although we didn't win, we are overjoyed at how positively everybody has responded to Something Good. Thank you for believing in us! A Christmas Staycation in South Delta
For some people, the Christmas Season is about jumping into a plane, heading to the hottest beach in the tropics and drinking pina coladas in the sun. That works for some, but for those who will be home for the holidays, there's plenty to savour and enjoy right here.
If you want to start a brand new Christmas tradition you can start by taking a stroll in old Ladner Village, now festooned with thousands of beautiful white LED lights. You can stroll arm-in-arm with your favourite someone while peering into the beautifully decorated windows at Muddy River Landing, Vinca's Kitchen, Fancy This Gift and the other mom-and-pop shops along 48th Avenue. Be sure and stop by Delta Street to see the gloriously decorated Christmas Tree, which like Ladner, is neither too big, too small, but somehow just right for the size.
Ladner Village was made for exploring on foot and with the road construction from this past summer completed, it's been made very pedestrian-friendly. Grab a coffee at Stir's and warm yourself as you walk around. Even if you've lived

in South Delta all your life, you'll be surprised at how much you've never noticed.
Be sure to walk on down to Chisholm Street to see if you can catch a glimpse of the ships lit up in all their Christmas glory. If you're really lucky, you might see the Christmas Carol Ships (due to sail from Westham Island bridge to the Ladner Harbour on Dec. 2 and 3).
Speaking of Westham Island, the iconic house boats at Canoe Pass and Ladner Reach are beautiful at any time of year but they are particularly nice when adorned by Christmas lights reflecting into the waters of the mighty Fraser River. Tsawwassen is a different animal entirely from Ladner's quaint little village, but no less interesting a visit. That's particularly the case because of the geography of the peninsula. Tiny Tsawwassen has all the modern amenities of boutique shopping, relaxing spas and premium java, and yet lies just minutes (or less) from sandy beaches and gorgeous wetlands. And yes, they can be thoroughly enjoyed in the winter.
Wait for a nice day and head uptown to 56th Street and 12th Avenue where you can select from a wide variety of warm holiday drinks at Petra's by L'Aromas or across the street at the Wood 'N Frog. The Woods Coffee shop at Tsawwassen Springs is also a strong candidate, where you'll find an outdoor skating rink nearby and a beautiful Christmas tree.
SOMETHINGGOODMAGAZINE.CA
Then walk on over to the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, say hello to Santa Claus (and Mrs. Claus) and have a peek at the little clothing shops and stores there. While Ladner has an antique charm to it, the pastelcoloured buildings of Tsawwassen offers its own vibe and style and I think you'll agree it retains all the friendliness you'd expect from a small town.
After you've had your fill of window shopping and coffee cupping, head on down to Centenntial Beach and let your eyes drink in the beauty of the waves lapping the shore. Dress warmly, however. Just in case! There's plenty to explore in South Delta this Christmas. To find specific events and activities near you check out Page 4 (Some good things to do).

During a chance meeting with Emily Kettleson in Tsawwassen, Something Good Magazine learned about her remarkable story of developing as an artist and finding work as a person with a disability. You may remember Katie McGuire's special holiday treats from previous years at Earthwise Gardens. Visit whoopiedeedoo.com to order one of her special handmade sweets gift baskets to put under the tree this Christmas. On this page, Katie shares one of her own favourite treats: SPICY GINGER SNAPS Yield: 45 small cookies Bake at 350 for 11 minutes. INGREDIENTS: 2 ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 ½ tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. ginger ¾ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. cloves ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. cayenne pepper ½ cup unsalted butter (room temp) 1 cup brown sugar ½ cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup molasses 2 large egg whites (lightly whipped) *1/4 -1/2 cup of granulated sugar to roll the cookies in METHOD: 1 Preheat oven to 350. 2 Sift all 7 dry ingredients (from the flour to the cayenne). Set aside. 3 Cream the room temperature butter in a mixer for 3 minutes, then add both the brown and granulated sugars. Mix for another 3 minutes until fluffy. 4 Lightly whip the egg whites in a medium size bowl with a whisk (this will give you a fluffier cookie) 5 Add the lightly whipped egg whites to the mixer with the butter and sugar’s.
TO BAKE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON 6 Once the egg is incorporated, add the molasses. 7 Slowly add the dry ingredients. Mix. Scrape down the bowl to make sure everything is incorporated. 8 Allow the batter rest for at least 30 minutes in the fridge. 9 While the batter is resting you can line your sheet (cookie) pans with silicone or parchment. 10 Take the batter out of the fridge and drop/scoop the cookie dough into the bowl of granulated sugar and fully coat it. 11 Place the now sugar coated dough onto the prepared pans, leaving room for them to expand. 12 Bake cookies for about 11 minutes, or slightly firm to the touch. You will notice the tops will crack and will look beautiful. 13 Let the cookies rest on the cookie sheets for a couple minutes to cool then transfer them on to cooling racks to fully cool. 14 These cookies are soft, chewy, spicy, and utterly delicious. Please enjoy them within a week to get their full impact!

IFT OF CHARITY
Feeding the Christmas spirit For many people Christmastime is the season when life slows down so that busy families can get together to eat, drink and be merry. Which is why the need for food is so keenly felt at this time of the year.
Joe Van Essen, coordinator of the South Delta Food Bank at Ladner's Christian Fellowship Penecostal Church, has been part of the volunteer group feeding the hungry for the past 24 years. Every Wednesday, he comes to the church and helps oversee the distribution of food to the public. When asked how he's kept it up for nearly a quarter century, Joe says he wouldn't have it any other way.
"It's always good to help your neighbours, right? And I think we all have to pitch in a little bit and try to help out the people in need in our community. And if that's just your neighbour or in your area, I think that's a good thing to do."
PHOTO: BELLA, 8, DROPS BANANAS OFF AT THE SOUTH DELTA FOOD BANK IN LADNER
The need has certainly grown over the years since Joe began volunteering. Back in 1992 there were between 20 and 25 families that relied on the food bank, while on a very busy week in 2016 can expect upwards of 110 families. But Joe also notes he is only one of many volunteers that come every week and donate their time and effort. With upwards of 30 volunteers, he says

the staff work tirelessly and seamlessly in getting the food sorted and distributed each Wednesday morning. And then, of course, there's the donors. "We have a very good community. There are a lot of people that get involved and do little food drives. We even have kids who have a birthday party and their friends have to bring—not a present—but a can of food. And then they bring it to the food bank."
As if on cue, an eight-year-old girl named Bella carries a box of bananas up to the food bank queue. It brings a smile to everybody's lips, including Joe's. "That's pretty special."
There are also many local businesses and sports clubs and other various organizations and churches that are very faithful in donating to the South Delta Food Bank. And all of it goes to feeding the public. "Nobody makes money here," says Joe. "Any donation that you make to the South Delta Food Bank is a donation to the cause."
If you wish to donate, you can drop by the office of the Ladner Christian Fellowship Church at 5545 Ladner Trunk Road Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm. Or call the South Delta Food Bank at 604-9461967. Monetary gifts are always welcome, along with any nutritious food items.

Christmas Cards as unique as Emily When you're sending out Christmas Cards this season you may want to consider a local artist who lovingly creates personalized cards by hand.
Tsawwassen entrepreneur Emily Kettleson, 21, is selling the cards for the second year in a row. You may already have noticed her featured as the "cover girl" on the May, 2016, edition of Something Good Magazine, in a story that highlighted the need for more workplaces to hire people with disabilities. Emily has autism and aside from her artistic sales, she also works two days a week for the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association. Just like any
SOMETHINGGOODMAGAZINE.CA
young person her age, she's learning new talents and using existing ones to grow her reputation in the community.
She made quite an impression last Christmas, selling her beautiful cards through Tsawwassen's Vancity location. This year she's selling out of Muddy River Landing (where they also sell her cards from other seasonal holidays) and at the Delta Community Living Society on 72nd Street in East Ladner. Something Good in Business
o look at Monique Parker or her Wallis Evera line of clothing you'd never associate her with the sort of people you're imagining as you read the word "Hemp."
"That image comes up right? Grubby, hippie, burlap bag or sack kind of dresses," says Monique as we sit in her beautiful home in Boundary Bay. "And also when you say ethical or eco fashion that image also comes up. Scratchy materials that don't look or feel good." There's nothing scratchy or uncomfortable about Monique's clothing, which looks professional and modern. In fact, it's doubtful anybody would look upon her dresses with anything but admiration if seen worn by a woman in an office setting.
That is, of course, this fashion designer's background. With a previous career in management consulting, the mother of two took five years away from the office to raise her children.
When she felt it was time to get back, she realized she didn't want to be away from home for so many hours. That's when Monique decided to create her own business. But there was a catch:

it needed to be something she could proudly show her children.
"All of a sudden I was a role model for a little kid and I wanted to show that you can build a life creating the world you want to live in."
While studying clothing design to start her new business, Monique came across some life-changing books in the library. She learned that fashion and clothing is the second-largest contributor of global pollution after the oil industry.
The problem is that oil-based fabrics—polyester, acrylic, nylon— dominate the market, while natural and biodegradeable fabrics are practically non-existent. While searching for a more eco-friendly fabric, Monique kept coming across one fibre that stood above the others.
"I was like, hemp? Who wears hemp? I don't even know where to buy hemp!" But the more she researched it the more she learned about the benefits. The fibres can be made into clothing, biodiesel, textiles, rope, and plastics. Hemp has had many political roadblocks, mainly because it's been

confused and associated with marijuana. Unlike Cannabis, hemp produces little of the psychoactive chemical known as THC, and industrially produced hemp contains none at all. "Hemp is not pot, you can't smoke a dress," says Monique, laughing. Monique's hemp comes from a distributor in Los Angeles and Colorado and the fabric is originally milled in China. That could change.
"Right now there isn't a lot of factories that mill fabrics anymore in North America. With the 'maker movement' that's reviving again in the States and a little bit in Canada as well, they're starting to bring production back to North America."
Wallis Evera is named after her two grandmothers, who lived in an era when natural fibres, like hemp, were not only commonplace, but ubiquitous. "They were both women working in the 1940s at a time when resources were understood to be limited and valuable and cherished. You had to recycle, reuse and repair. That was just the way of life back then." For more, visit wallisevera.com.

Angels in our community You don't need to be an angel to help your community but you could certainly put a smile on the face of a little one this Christmas by taking an angel from a local business or from the foyer of Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen.
Students of all ages and grades have been working hard to make 200 beautiful handmade angels to be distributed around Delta. Whenever you see an angel, you can look at the back and see the age and gender of a child for whom you can buy a toy or a gift.
Jaya Van Praagh, junior school librarian and Primary Years Programme coordinator, says that in previous years the Angel Tree Program was taken on the by school's Citizenship Club comprised of Grades 4 and 5 students as an action project. Last year Jaya took on the project and decided to expand it to involve as many students in the school as possible, setting an example as International Baccalaureate (IB) school.
"It's been really great to get every single student making an angel because that's what it's all about. It's not just being told what to do but also being involved in it. If they have that ownership of making an angel and decorating it and especially knowing they're not doing it for them—they might not see it again because many of these angels
get distributed around Delta—but they're helping a very important project." Creating these angels is the fun part for many students, but not the only part. Jaya says the next step is in actually taking the angel from the tree and then going with your family to buy a present to donate to Deltassist, the local non-profit that distributes these presents to low-income families in Delta. Jaya says the goal is to instill in students a charitable work ethic, so that they know the Angel Tree program isn't just a "one time thing" but one part of a broader commitment.
"We also have our ongoing backpack buddy program that we do throughout the year with a school in East Vancouver. So twice a month we collect food from every grade level which then gets donated to children from foodinsecure homes."
Southpointe students also engage in the Deltassist Christmas Hamper Program and Coats for Kids Foundation, two more projects that encourage children to take an active role in charity work.
"It's the spirit of taking action, which is part of the IB of course, but more importantly it's about being caring, global citizens."
Wishing everyone

Winning with Christmas spirit What would you do if you were handed $1,000 and asked to spend it all in one day?
It's a fantasy I'm sure we've all had while queuing in traffic or drifting off to sleep at night. But for a local health care aide, that dream became a reality. Richmond's Lindsey Vukicevic entered a contest for the B.C. Lotto Daily Grand prize draw, which asked what people would do if they were handed $1,000. Her answer was the winner.
Lindsey's essay, as she explains it, was to take the entire winnings and spend it all in the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Store in Ladner, the proceeds of which go to critical improvements at the hospital. "Two years ago I lost my mother and the seniors helped me get over the loss. They became my family," says Lindsey, who works at a Tsawwassen long-term seniors care facility. "So I entered this essay saying if I won $1,000 I would use it to buy things for these seniors to make a better quality of life and enhance the atmosphere to make the care home look more like their home."
SOMETHINGGOODMAGAZINE.CA
Lindsey chose the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Store knowing the proceeds go to the Delta Hospital, which houses a long-term seniors care facility. It's two good causes mixed into one. "Even though I now live in Richmond I still drive to Delta Hospital because they have a great team and they look after me." Lindsey had to bring a pickup truck and SUV to pack all the decorations, music and movies to convey back to Tsawwassen.
She was also grateful to be allowed in a half hour before opening so she could focus on spending that $1,000.
"I think this is the best Christmas Store I've been in. These ladies here (volunteers) work really hard. Without them this wouldn't be possible so I give kudos to the volunteers who were here late last night setting up for me."
You can be a Christmas angel like Lindsey! The Christmas Store is open 10 am to 3 pm Monday to Saturday at 4816 Delta Street in Ladner.

Something Social:
Women Helping Women Ask any woman how she copes with the pressures of the modern day world and chances are she'll tell you she gets by with a little help from her friends. Which is why the Ladner-based non-profit Women Helping Women South Delta is really a natural extension of that helping hand.
Eight years ago, Pindi Mann and fellow moms in the community decided to get together to collect personal care items and donate them to women in need in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver. In the second year they decided to bring it a little closer to home. Through their network of friends and school moms, they managed to collect 50 care baskets and deliver them to a transition home in Surrey. That first year left an indelible impact on Pindi.
"When we dropped off the baskets there was a girl about 19 or 20 and she saw a little pink razor. Women have these little pink razors all over their house and they're just so common you don't think about it. But she saw it and started crying. "She's sitting next to me and I asked, 'Why are you crying?'
"And she said, 'Oh I've been wanting to shave my legs for weeks and I haven't been able to because I don't have the means to buy one.' "So, something so small can have such a huge impact on women. And that's the thing. We're not saving lives, we're not doing this huge thing. It's just a little bit of joy over the holidays."
Those 50 baskets in the first year became 500 baskets last Christmas and the response has been so overwhelming that this year they've moved from the Fisherman's Hall in East Ladner to renting the Ladner Community Centre, where on Dec. 7 the gift baskets will be picked up by charities around the Lower Mainland. Today, their care packages go to women in Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Mission and White Rock. Delta doesn't currently have a transition home, but Women Helping Women have that covered. Deltassist has a program which provides families with toys for kids and Pindi says when moms come to pick up a toy they'll be surprised with a gift basket.

"Women tend to put ourselves last," says Aurela Edgson, another volunteer with Women Helping Women. "We put our kids first." Aurela says that she gets excited and happy imagining women opening up the gift baskets and having the opportunity to spoil themselves. That energy gets fed throughout all the many volunteers of Women Helping Women as they collect donations, stuffing the baskets into every nook and cranny of their homes until it's time to deliver the goodies.
"We have such joy doing it. We get all these donations, we sort all these items, but we have so much fun doing it. We laugh and we get so excited when we see a gift basket come in complete because we think about how much we would like to receive this, and how much we'd like to give it to someone else." If you'd like to help Women Helping Women you can drop donations at the following locations in South Delta until Dec. 6: Changes Hair Studio, Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe, Muddy River Landing, 30 Minute Hit and Deas Island Dance, and Locks 'N Lashes in Tsawwassen.

Get Shrumped for a good cause Holiday musical aims to send dancers to North American competition
If you're on the lookout for some entertainment over the holidays you need look no further than the political satire and musical set for this December at the Genesis Theatre in Ladner. Featuring talented Studio West dancers, singers and actors, the Christmas-themed musical "Shrumped for the Holidays" draws inspiration from a certain recently-elected presidential candidate and the time-honoured classic "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. the synopsis:
"With main characters based on some of the most current and flamboyant figures in pop culture, this holiday satire is sure to make you laugh out loud as well as root for the humble unassuming underdogs. In the story we meet Ronald K. Shrump, the less than honest businessman and patriarch of one of the most spoiled households of three bratty daughters...ever. We're also introduced to his disgruntled butler and maid who are searching for a way to knock Shrump down a peg or two! With a hint of budding teen romance, a slight twist that revisits from Shrumps past, and a little help spreading the Christmas spirit from a
This is an opportunity for the competitive dancers from the studio to go up against thousands of dancers from all over North America.
“My passion and love for dance and our students has no boundaries," says Jyla. "These kids work incredibly hard and are so committed and excited to be taking part in this competition. They will be going up against some of the best dancers from North America. This is truly a chance of a lifetime for our kids”. The Studio West students and their families will be undertaking numerous fundraising initiatives over the next few months, to help alleviate some of the cost of the competition.
special Christmas fairy, this is a complete tale that is fit for all audiences!"
The story is written by Jyla and Chris Davis, who with their teaching staff, run Studio Dance West, a fixture in the community since 2009.
Proceeds from the event are to go towards sending the best and brightest dancers of South Delta to Anaheim, California, in 2017, where close to 150 dance families will be taking part in the Showstopper West Coast Final Dance Competition.

Presenting a pair of pyjamas for Christmas There's nothing quite so cozy as sitting in your pyjamas by the fire, basking in the tinsel covered glow of the Christmas Tree, wondering what presents await you underneath in the morning. For many, the receiving of a new pair of pyjamas each Christmas is a deeply enjoyed tradition, and one that a young Ladner resident wants to share with the world.
"I usually get a pair of pyjamas on Christmas Eve and there's some people who don't own a pair at all," says Molly Millward, 13. "I think it's nice they can feel that nice warm pair of pyjamas on Christmas Eve." The Christmas Pyjama Drive, as it has come to be called, is old hat to Molly, who started doing it five years ago after getting the idea from her cousin in Surrey, Reese Shelly. Indeed, the idea has taken off in other communities as well, with children collecting pyjamas in Northern B.C. and into Alberta.
The first year she managed to collect 486 pairs of furry and warm P.J.s, with help from her elementary school. But over the years her numbers have swelled with increased donations and dropoffs, reaching upwards of 600 pairs last December. This year, the Grade 8 Delta Secondary student is aiming for even more and with the help of her brother, 10-year-old

Spencer, who has encouraged the WE team at Port Guichon Elementary, she's got a real shot! With every donation, Molly separates them by gender, organizes them into sizes, then folds them and bundles them for delivery.
All of the pyjamas collected in Delta will stay in the community and go to families registered with Deltassist. Up until Dec. 14, you can drop off your donation at Ladner locations like the Royal Bank, London Drugs, Buttercup's Children's Boutique, Delta Police station, the Delta Hospital Foundation, and the Urban Rack. The pyjamas must be new, never worn, and for ages newborn to 16 years of age. If you want to help even more you can also include a new pillowcase, slippers, robes or children's book with your pyjama donation. As well, if you bring a pyjama donation to Brown's Socialhouse on Sunday, Dec. 4, you will receive 50 percent off your meal. For more information visit The Christmas Pyjama Drive on Facebook.

Several hundred Cub Scouts and Venturer Scouts from Vancouver, Delta, Surrey, Bowen Island, Port Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and White Rock descended on Boundary Bay Regional Park on Nov. 26 for the Twenty-Third Annual Cub Skills Program. Hosted by Terry Grant, Chief Scout for Scouts Canada and former star of OLN's Mantracker, the skills program educated Cub Scouts (ages 8-10) in important wilderness survival skills. Activities included shelter building, lighting a cooking fire with only one match, learning about search and rescue, rope making, knot typing, water safety and practicing first aid techniques. The events of the day were captured by Kris Krüg (kriskrug.com), a professional photographer with Getty Images and a contributing photographer at National Geographic
