SHOWCASE PROJECTS Athens Metro ADK Consulting Engineers is the sole Greek Consultant participating in the Joint Venture ‘’Olympic Metro’’ awarded the turnkey contract for the Athens Metro. ADK actively participated in all development stages of the project the last three decades, and is still contributing to its expansion, currently offering its services as a member of the Technical Consultancy team.

The project was initially serving about 490,000 passengers daily through two underground lines with a total length of 18 km and 20 new stations. After the recent extensions, it is currently serving about 770,000 passengers, a number that will increase approximately to 1,000,000 by the end of 2012, with a total length of almost 40 km and 41 stations. In the late 1970's ADK carried out, in association, the preliminary design (architectural - structural) of the 2 lines, as well as the design of tunnels, cut-andcovers and other structures, public utility networks relocation, as well as the preliminary design (architectural - structural - E/M) for 30 stations and two repair depots.

From 1991 till 2000, ADK, as a member of the “Olympic Metro J/V, was leading the Engineering Coordination Unit based in Athens, and was also acting as representative of the consortium to the Owner.

Services rendered by ADK included: Management of revision and compatibility check of the designs Detailed architectural designs for all stations, depots, administration and rest of ancillary buildings Environmental Impact Assessment Study for the Sepolia depot Flood protection design of all stations Surveys, cadastral and expropriation files Diversion and restoration of all Public Utilities Networks Special studies for the avoidance of underground water bodies Studies for the protection of existing buildings, such as the Athens Concert Hall, from noise and vibrations during construction. Currently, ADK, as member of two different consortia, is providing consultancy services for the extension towards Ellinikon, covering both design check and supervision of construction for all project works.

Acropolis Museum

ADK Consulting Engineer S.A. was member of the consortium that won the first prize of the international architectural competition for the erection of the New Acropolis Museum, and was also awarded the project design contract. ADK delivered the structural and E/M design (in association).

The museum is a five-story building with two underground levels. The mixed structural system combines a reinforced concrete frame with shear walls and a steel cantilevered structure for the top floor Parthenon Gallery. The whole design is highly asymmetric due to the archaeological findings beneath that could not be relocated or disturbed.

Due to the importance of the building and its exhibits, the museum is both constructed on a seismic base isolation system (FPS bearings), but also designed to meet all capacity provisions of the Greek Seismic Code. In this way, the structure behaves as conventionally designed, but with substantially reduced seismic forces, due to the effects of the seismic base isolation system.

The E/M design was also a challenge, since strict environmental conditions must be maintained at all times within the building, due to the sensitivity of the exhibited antiquities. It included all systems such as heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, normal and emergency power, lighting, security & safety systems, audio-visual & multimedia services, fire suppression systems, elevators/ escalators, building management system for E/M facilities monitoring, lightning protection, etc.

The project budget amounted to â‚Ź130.000.000 and the museum was inaugurated in 2009. ADK is proud to have participated in the realisation of such a landmark building of international impact.

Hellinikon Olympic Venues The Hellinikon Olympic plot, realised in the old Athens Airport facilities, formed a significant Olympic Pole where the venues of baseball, softball, hockey, fencing, basketball and handball were constructed. The facilities were designed to accommodate more than 40.000 spectators, with 53.000 m2 of of built up areas and 27.300 m2 of auxiliary facilities. The basketball & handball venue was constructed in the old hangar facilities of the Olympic Airways maintenance base, which was appropriately modified and extended. ADK was leading the consortia that prepared the masterplan of the Hellinikon Olympic Complex, as well as the detailed design for its construction (architectural, landscaping, structural, E/M, hydraulic works, EIA). ADK was also responsible for liaising with the authorities in charge, to ensure the compatibility of the design with other major infrastructure prepared for the area.

The project was very demanding both in terms of the adequacy of the proposed technical solutions and also due to the extremely tight time schedule. In order to address these tight demands, a robust team consisting of numerous engineers from various companies was formed, under the coordination of ADK, being responsible for solving a variety of technical issues right on the spot. Workshops taking place on a weekly basis, where the design team and client representatives met, expedited the project and resolved numerous matters affecting its progress. At the project peak design output ADK was coordinating teams from twelve companies in Athens, one in Thessaloniki, two in Sidney, one in Canberra, one in Kuala Lumpur and one in London. The design of the whole complex ensured the safe access and smooth circulation of athletes, spectators and agents.

All targets were achieved and the Hellinicon Olympic Plot was delivered on time and functioned in an exemplary way during the Olympic Games of 2004, while a lot of the venues are currently used for National Basketball and Football games.

Revythoussa island LNG tanks ADK's involvement in the Revythoussa LNG project goes back to 1990, when the company was awarded the design review, project management and construction supervision for civil, structural and geotechnical works pertaining to the construction of two semi-buried LNG Storage tanks and their ancillary facilities. Each tank is 27m high and 65m in diameter, and has a 65,000m3 capacity. They are of double-containment type, with an outer cryogenic prestressed concrete tank and an inner 9% nickel-steel tank, containing LNG at -170oC. Both tanks are located on a seismic base Isolation system. As per the original design, the Tanks were foreseen to be supported on laminated neoprene pads of approximately 1m in diameter, which, following the design review that was carried out by ADK, proved to be completely inadequate. So, ADK was requested to carry out the full seismic design of the tanks from scratch, task which was carried out most successfully, by mobilizing the competent in-house design team, supplemented by world renowned University Professors, all experts in the field. ADK (in J/V), was also awarded the design review and construction supervision of the LNG Terminal Expansion Project (in 2004), as well as of the Revythoussa 15.5 MW Power Integration Project (in 2007).

Port of Igoumenitsa gateway ferry terminal The Port of Igoumenitsa is Greece’s major ferry terminal in north-western Greece, and the main gateway to Western Europe. ADK has been involved in this greenfield project uninterruptedly since 1993, though a series of alternating design and supervision contracts, providing all services encountered in port projects, such as initial planning, masterplan & feasibility study, EIA, surveys & investigations, engineering design of all marine & land infrastructure works, preparation of tender documents, project management services, health and safety plan, specialised studies like coastal erosion for nearby sand-spit, ship manoeuvring simulation, etc. Furthermore, ADK provided technical assistance to the client for the supervision of works. ADK had to deal with extremely hostile soil conditions due to the soft clay with low undrained shear strength and high compressibility that is dominating this alluvial region. A series of soil improvement works was proposed, like soil preloading combined with wick drains for the acceleration of drainage, consolidation & primary settlement, and stone columns to increase the shear strength.

The port quay walls were designed of reinforced concrete caissons, with pumice backfill to reduce active lateral earth pressure. Finger piers have also been designed, consisting of reinforced concrete caisson dolphins connected with steel gangways. Due to its end-to-end integrated engineering know-how, ADK was also able to offer the whole spectrum of consultancy services for the road and railway connection of the Igoumenitsa Port, cooperating with different clients per case. Therefore, ADK had the chance to create a selfsustained transportation node in western Greece, contributing to the country’s infrastructure upgrade and modernisation. This enables ADK to get involved in major projects and offer cross selling and end to end integration services ADK was involved in a series of contracts since 1993 to date covering all aspects of consulting engineering services for both port infrastructure development and road and railway connection cooperating with different clients per case

The Beira-Lobito Highway is being developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, the African Development Bank, and the African Union. The route has a length of 3,523 km crossing Angola, the most southerly part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and central Mozambique. It is substantially complete in its southeastern half, but the western half consists of earth tracks or formerly paved roads requiring reconstruction. ADK assessed the options and viability of the western section rehabilitation, including the alternative southern route through Northern Zambia. Due to the regional impact of the study, ADK also assessed broader policy issues in road maintenance and established a regional infrastructure database.

General Authority for Marine Wealth in Libya initiated a sequence of maritime works in order to develop fishing harbour infrastructure facilities. J&P Ioannou & Paraskevaides (Overseas) Ltd was the contractor for the two fishing harbours at Ras Al Hilal and Al Mayah, entrusting ADK with the preparation of the preliminary and final designs.
