Supermarket shopping has been given a glam makeover with the opening of the swanky new FreshChoice City Market at The Crossing. It combines the effortless glamour of a European-style market where fresh meets local – think colourful explosions of Moffatt’s flowers and super fresh regional produce. Walk over polished concrete floors to discover the white-tiled chic of Lil’ Ruby Espresso café and a lavish wine section aglitter under ornate chandeliers, resplendent with a gold claw-foot bathtub full of Moet cosying up to Dom Perignon and Krug. Space Invaders

Christchurch is set to get a whole lot more colourful from October 7 through to November 18 care of this year’s season of SCAPE Public Art. Showcasing both New Zealand and international artists, the programme will see works reflecting this year’s theme, ‘Time in Space’, popping up around the city at venues including the Arts Centre, Canterbury Museum, Hagley Park, Botanic Gardens and more; they'll be linked by a Public Art Walkway you can navigate with a guided walk or off your own bat (look up the SCAPE App for a bit of handy annotation!). There’s also an accompanying schedule of free collaborative activities and artist talks throughout the season – hit the website and start planning out your big spring of art! scapepublicart.org.nz

GRILLED TO PERFECTION If you haven’t yet, you’ll definitely want to experience the delicious flavours of South America at El Fogón Grill at Little High Eatery, where they specialise in the classic meaty cuisine hits of Argentina, Brazil and more. It’s all good (seriously good!), but don’t miss the home-made chorizo in particular – wash it down with one of their Kiwi craft beers or a Chilean red! elfogongrill.com

Fans of legendary Christchurch café Hello Sunday are in for a treat when owners Jonathan Spark and Chris Penny open slick new sibling restaurant and cocktail bar 5th Street in October/ November. Continuing the community vibe of their spearhead, and with a focus on primo eats and cocktails, 5th Street will be handily located across Elgin Street in a converted warehouse space that’s set to feature an open plan restaurant seating 70 and a swishy bar seating 50. Chris says we should expect a more refined than rustic aesthetic, where leather couches, coffee tables, small bistro plates and table service will be the order of the day in the bar. Meanwhile, a constantly changing, concise menu showcasing the freshest local produce (with a focus on quality over a multitude of menu items) and al fresco seating out front and at the rear will be the story with the restaurant. An extended open kitchen and bar area will see bar staff and chefs working side by side, with guests able to sit at either end to get close to the action, while above in the ceiling space exposed rafters will feature a jungle of tangled vines to create a green canopy.

PRE-TRENDING Cityscape scours the globe to find out the hot and happening trends in the gourmet scene before they hit the local scene (or bypass us completely).

Project X

Mercedes Benz is extending its precision engineering and dynamic, cutting-edge styling into traditional tradie territory with the release of its dual cab five-seater X-Class ute, a stunning marriage of rugged, all-terrain pickup and urbane chic. Launching in April, and tipped to be the most high-tech entry in its category, the bodacious pickup will come in three models: Pure, an affordable base model workhorse with vinyl flooring; Progressive, a swankier offering edging towards an MB SUV interior; and the high-end, specced-out mac-daddy Power. It’s available in X200, X200d, X250d and as the flagship V6 X350d – with the torqued up gruntiness of the turbo diesel generating 190kW of power. Famed safety features synonymous with Mercedes will also be present via an advanced suite that includes active emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and an optional 360-degree camera. mbchristchurch.co.nz

ACROSS THE UNIVERSO

The Christchurch Art Gallery café has been closed since the quakes, but it's back with a vengeance once again c/o Universo Brasserie & Bar, which opens in September. It’s helmed by the city’s leading bar tsar and hospitality magnate Tony Astle from Stealth Hospitality, so you can expect Universo to be a swishy affair; a bright and sunny café featuring al fresco dining by day and a slick, intimate bar and restaurant by night. Channelling Euro-themed lux, the venue will open from 10am 7 days, serving brunch, lunch and dinner from an exceptional menu (natch) that’s accessibly priced. Expect the fit out to include large stylish pots holding tropical plants and sweeping curtains, with guests able to sit both in the venue’s gallery entrance during its opening hours and out front al fresco-style. Movers & shakers

Cityscape catches up with Vesuvio’s chief cocktail concoctionist Rachel Powderly who, when not assembling mighty fine cocktails, is mastering celestial travel. What’s your signature cocktail? The Bocca di Bacco (see recipe on page 41). Bacco was the God of wine, so this drink is a tribute to him and, of course, the fact that we celebrate wine so much at Vesuvio. What’s the secret to a killer cocktail? Balance, presentation and I always try to add a bit of theatre! Hitting every part of the palate is very important – it should be a taste sensation. Favourite place to go for a big night? I’ve heard good things about The Poplar Social Club and Boo’s is always good for pool and Negronis! Where’s Christchurch’s hidden gem? Vesuvio! I know I work here, but honestly it really is the definition of Christchurch’s hidden gem if you want to escape from average nights out in town. Favourite place to escape? Saturn! I feel it’s important to maintain a sense of the scope of the universe. Not many people know how to get here but we’ve been planning a mission for a long time. It includes lots of backwards-jumping dolphins, space candy and moon dust … not forgetting the snow mobiles.

Share It Around Inspired by a dining experience in Hong Kong, White House Black's new FEED ME! 10-course menu option is a shared meal that requires the participation of the whole table. Dishes vary from night to night according to the chef's whim, with varying combos aplenty; try crispy skinned pork belly bites on pumpkin puree one evening and compressed melon and prosciutto with pomegranate molasses the very next! whitehouseblack.co.nz

POLE POSITION Local pole legend with an international rep Karry Summers has taken pole dancing fitness to new heights following the opening of Altitude Pole & Fitness – New Zealand’s largest and Christchurch’s premier pole dancing and fitness studio. Altitude were at capacity and with a waitlist of more than 100 students at their former site, so owner/director Summers, an ex-gymnast turned aerial performer and Miss Pole Dance NZ and Pole World Cup runner up, grabbed the opportunity a high-ceilinged St Asaph Street warehouse presented, converting it into a purpose-built studio. The slick, state-of-the-art studio offers over 50 classes each week in a fun and friendly space that features two pole rooms; the larger The Arena and more intimate The Boudoir (both with 12 poles) offer multi-level pole dancing and pole fitness classes, while aerial rigging room The Atrium is on hand for students keen to channel their inner Pink and learn aerial silks and hoop, or to take a number of other classes including Stretch & Flex, Acro Gym for gymnastics-based acrobatics and tricks, funky ZUU Fitness, and the shake-what-yamama-gave-ya butt toning TwerkFit®. altitudepole.co.nz

(Extra)ordinary The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra are joined by Simon Tedeschi, one of Australia’s most renowned classical pianists, to perform George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F major on November 11 at the Air Force Museum as part of their For The Common Man concert. Composed in 1926, it had critics at the time harrumphing – was it jazz or classical music? Modern audiences though can simply sit back and enjoy Gershwin’s work of playful cheerfulness. The orchestra also launches into a fanfare described by its own composer as “a thrilling ride in a terrific sports car”, John Adam’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, and rounding things out (and giving the programme its name) is American composer Aaron Copland’s third symphony, written in the aftermath of WWII and intended as a tribute to those who had sacrificed during the war. “It was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work … he deserved a fanfare.” Copland reckoned, duly banging out what many consider the best American symphony ever written. This line-up’s a goodie! cso.co.nz

A New Regent Street jeweller with a reputation for excellence, Via Sollertia’s name is a Latin phrase meaning ‘the way of expertise, skillfulness, artfulness and dexterity’; it’s an entirely appropriate moniker for the bespoke craft jewellers, who offer a very personal design and creation process that starts with selecting the ideal stone for you and ends with a dream ring on someone’s finger. You’ll also find pre-existing designs, a comprehensive stock of pearls, and expert valuation services in store. viasollertia.co.nz

FEST PRACTICE The always hotly anticipated Christchurch Arts Festival is back on its biennial schedule in 2017 (until September 17) to heat up spring with an explosion of talent in dance, music, the spoken word, visual art, theatre and comedy. From the shocking to Shakespeare and crooners to clowns, you’re guaranteed to find something on the schedule to love. Better get organised; tickets are in hot demand as usual and if you miss the good stuff, it’s another long two-year wait. STEAK YOUR CLAIM Bessie is aimed at bringing the city the finest quality food in a moody interior featuring exposed brick, leather booths, and real trees(!), but the feature that draws the eye most is their dry aging room. In here choice cuts of Canterbury meat spend time getting ready especially for you before hitting the Spanish charcoal grill at a roaring 450°C. The combination lends a unique flavour to dish stars such as grass-fed wagyu rump, lamb tenderloin, and free range pork belly; pair with lavish sauces and sides put together with outstanding produce and you’re in (optionally literal) hog-heaven. Drawstrings and ruching, chiffon seersucker stripes and frills, swashbuckler’s sleeves, and heraldic prints of dandy-esque proportions are all updated for a new era, joining Walker’s iconic arrow buttons and overstitching, wide sailor-sash belting, wide cuffs, and oversized ruffles, while her statement ‘Mutiny’ print riffs on German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer’s apocalyptic Ship of Fools. karenwalker.com

TAYLOR L ooking to the Japanese art of Kintsugi (repairing broken pottery with gold) for inspiration, style maestro Victoria Taylor’s ‘Fractured Moment’ collection reveals the many small moments hidden away by the everyday via divided panels, cut away sections and frames, and fragments re-formed. Taylor’s signature sharp lines are softened around the body with strong cut-outs, revealing necklines and waists, while empowered femininity is enhanced through impeccable tailoring juxtaposed with soft silks. 32! Whoops, how did that happen?

Cityscape caught up with New Zealand fashion’s bright young thing and Cooper co-designer Julia Leuchars following the launch of their SS18 collection. Describe Cooper SS18 in three words. Off-duty, high-impact, shine! What is the overarching design aesthetic of the collection? We want people to live their lives in Cooper – it’s a collection that can take you from desk to dinner and everywhere in between. What inspires your designs? Gosh – everything and anything! My inspirations are constantly changing and evolving as I do! A colour, an Instagram, travelling, or walking past someone on the street – anything that catches my eye can inspire and influence me. I also think of who is going to wear the collection; what are they going to be doing or where are they going. Tell us about your favourite piece? I’m in love with our metallic pineapple jacquard and of course all our sequins! I adore jacquards; I’m very tactile so textures appeal to me greatly. I would also admit I do have a metallic addiction (you can never-ever have enough metallic in your life!) … or rather an addiction to anything shiny! I particularly love a Lime Green and Neon Pink two tone

sequin I’ve used in summer – the brightness is gorgeous and it makes everyone look tan – a must for summer! Who is your favourite fashion icon? My mum has always been iconic and influential in all things for me. Trelise has also been a steady influence for me – I’ve worn her brands since I was 15 and coveted them long before that. I still adore the red sequin bomber jacket that was my first purchase. Who are your favourite designers? Trelise Cooper, of course, but I’ve also been bitten by the Gucci bug, so Alessandro Michele, and I adore what Hedi Slimane and Anthony Vaccarello have done at Yves Saint Laurent, while the designs of IRO and McQueen constantly catch my attention, as does Olivier Rousteing and of course Dries [van Noten]. I also adore Roberto Cavalli’s dramatic romance, and Lorenzo Serafina represents everything a strong-sexy-feminine women should aspire to! Fashion is … individuality and yours to create!

As we head into party season, Cityscape does the hard yards to pull together the ultimate resource to nailing the perfect celebration in the city.

Spring is here, and so starts the party season. Whether you’re charged with organising a 21st for the masses, an elaborate slinky dinner party for a select few, a function or product launch for work, that long-overdue family reunion dinner, or this year’s work party, we’ve got you covered. You’ll find some of the city’s finest venues and where to go for what in the following pages, ensuring your next party, event, or conference goes off without a hitch.

INTIMATE SPACES When elegant, intimate venues for smaller gatherings are called for (or you simply want to escape the hoi polloi), Christchurch is blessed with a number of spaces and places. Try the refined ol’ skool charms of No.4 Restaurant & Bar’s The Library – this wooden-panelled wonderland rocks a hunter’s lodge/ den featuring its own bar (complete with stuffed marlin head!). Vesuvio’s classy upstairs library/lounge channels some seriously broody charms with it’s newspapered walls, and as an added bonus you’ll likely be treated to some sweet jazz snaking up from the main bar; down there some of the city’s best tapas, cocktails, and wine are just a flight of stairs away. For a full-throttled swank-fest, Bloody Mary’s Whisky Lounge, with its buttery Chesterfield couches and high-back velvet chairs, is a cavern of cool that’s the place to be, while The Residence at The George teams 1950s charms with elegant, modern conveniences – think the

Hamptons without having to leave the city. For a private dining experience guaranteed to have your guests talking for months, Chillingworth Road’s GH Mumm room celebrates all things lavish; chandeliers, a private chef (should the occasion call for it) and flutes of France’s finest are all de rigueur. Located on historic New Regent Street, The Grey Robin Restaurant (formally Shop Eight) is ripe for a boutique restaurant takeover, or for smaller parties, try the super private (and hidden!) dining room. Rock the aforementioned Bloody Mary’s private dining rooms, where chandeliers meet glitzy wallpaper, or round up the team at the high-altitude chef’s table, which provides a view into the open kitchen theatrics. For cigar bar chic, Veto Bar at Baretta takes its cues from the late, great SOL Square’s Cartel, even replicating the cigar-inlaid bar and shabby chic.

3

LAVISH AFFAIRS Crank up the fancy at your next soirée at Bessie. Their specially designed dry-aging room is as stylish as it is practical, giving the socially awkward guests among the group a brilliant conversation starter. Top 100 restaurant quality cuisine meets bistro lux sophistication overlooking New Regent Street at Twenty Seven Steps, while the crowd-pleasers at Fiddlesticks have a dedicated functions coordinator who’ll take care of everything! Take the party outdoors at Rogues of Rotherham in their open courtyard (complete with pizza oven) or into the slick

PARTY DOWN Keep things casual and rocking at BBQ Brazil (with all-you-can-eat BBQ and a dance floor to work off the excesses), Thai Chef’s and its myriad of private rooms and karaoke den, or the slick chill of The Happening where they can sell you beer by the glass or keg. Hot Havana nights and days are the go at Radio Hauraki fave The Cuban’s bodacious indoor/outdoor space. The great outdoors are also the calling card of Little Neighbourhood, Valley Inn Tavern and the fierce Deck Bar at Freemans, or get out the velvet rope to create your own VIP zone

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Bloody Mary’s

Cityscape hits up the New York-style steakhouse at Rydges Latimer for a decadent meal fit for the only-slightly-murderous royal that inspired its name.

T

he Hugh’s Cut of prime rib is huge. I can feel the same delirious grin Fred Flintstone has when the drive-in waitress tips their car with the gigantic ribs at the start of each show plastered across my face – it’s definitely a yabba dabba doo moment. Slow cooked over 24-hours, the truffle and green peppercornrubbed prime rib has become an institution among the city’s carnivore set, while its arrival by cart and ceremonious carving at the table brings an anachronistic element of romance and glamour to dining in the city. It helps when the star attraction is some of the finest beef you’ll ever eat, lightly caramelised on the outside with a slight chew to the crust and blushingly medium-rare. Doused in a light jus and accompanied by the rich, buttery layers of a delicate garlic gratin, delightfully crisp broccolini and four decadent sauce options (horseradish, béarnaise,

peppercorn and garlic butter), it’s a masterclass in culinary cunning in which big, bold beefy flavours meet melt-in-the-mouth tenderness. We have fun experimenting with flavour combinations of the sauces and, between sips of the pepper-spiked velvetiness of a Peter Lehmann The Barossan Shiraz, I mentally add it the top of my final meal wish list. Resplendent with dark oak and buttery leather, Bloody Mary’s is a lavish affair where broody intimacy teams up with the flashing steel of

39

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Spring 17

Laguiole cutlery, glittering bulbous burgundy Riedel glassware, cowhide-backed bar chairs, and a seamlessly choreographed ballet of flawless, white-coated front-ofhouse efficiency. We’re won over the instant the champagne cart pulls up and starts dispensing chilled flutes of Veuve Clicquot, the seduction as effortless as the super friendly and attentive, always-there-when-youneed-them staff. We snack on warmed mammoth olives, their saltiness tempered by the nuttiness of shaved parmesan and rightly legendary braised lamb croquettes. Entrees of smoked wagyu beef tartar (humming with a chilli tingle) and gloriously fluffy and flavoursome twice-baked goat cheese soufflé hit all the right notes alongside a Squealing Pig pinot noir and Giesen Vineyard Selection sauvignon blanc. With time for one last surprise, our eyes widen with delight when the Cambridge burnt cream and baked chocolate mascarpone cheesecake touch down, followed, on cue, by the liquid dessert and cognac trolley.

SISTER KONG

Follow the welcoming neon-pink pawed fortune cat down Victoria Street’s trendiest lane to the swanky new home of Sister Kong, where bodacious bao meet a killer drinks list in the pimped out cool of a Hong Kong baijiu house. Having invigorated the city’s dumpling fans with their Pot Sticker empire, the Hoop Group (Sam and Sally Hooper) have brought the epic street flavours of Hong Kong and Taipei to the city. Their new joint combines China’s famous fire-water spirit with feisty, funky new creations; you’ll want to tap bao jacked up with saffron and chilli, twice-cooked pork belly, panko tiger prawn, the breakfast bao with bacon, egg, and pickled cucumber, dessert bao and the next-level Bao Yourself – a DIY bao platter for four featuring the slow-roasted meat of the day, house-made kim chi and more from their team of steaming, frying, grilling kung-fu chefs. Featuring a library of killer beverages including baijiu martinis and other exotic creations, the venue is tricked out with rough plastered walls, slick wooden tables, and booth seating flanked by a jungle of tropical plants, while flocks of red bird cages and lanterns hang from the ceiling. There’s also a wall dedicated to 100 gold fortune cats, which customers can adopt for $100 (with all money raised going to animal welfare and rescue organisation Paw Justice). sisterkong.co.nz

MEAT MARKET

Cityscape chews the fat with Cashmere Cuisine’s Kurt Robinson on the benefits of fat and marbling. Fat is flavour. And animal fat, in moderation, is good for you too. Marbled and fatty cuts of meat allow you to get creative in the kitchen and on the BBQ and pull off slow-cooks that produce tender, juicy and fall-apart meats that are bursting with flavour. The fat acts as protection – it stops the meat from drying out, and improves tenderness, moistness and, most importantly, flavours! Few things in life are more enjoyable than a thick, juicy steak cooked to perfection; to pull this off, look for a steak (like our dry-aged rib-eye) with marbling (flecks of fat running through the meat). When cooked at high heat, the marbling melts, producing a rich buttery texture that coats the meat, enhancing the bold, beefy flavours. What’s more, marbling is high in the healthy fat oleic acid, which is associated with string of health benefits, so it’s win-win! cashmerecuisine.co.nz

It’s sure to impress at your next dinner party or family dinner. Serves 4 – 6 SHOPPING LIST Lamb 1 bone-in lamb shoulder (around 2 – 2.25kg) 1tbs cumin seeds 1tbs coriander seeds 1tbs fennel seeds 1 cinnamon quill 50g fresh ginger (chopped) 4 smashed garlic cloves 50ml olive oil 50ml pomegranate molasses Zest of a lemon 500ml red wine 1ltr beef stock Salad 4 oranges 100g watercress 100g mint leaves 20ml olive oil Salt and pepper

MAKING IT HAPPEN For the lamb Combine the cumin, coriander and fennel seeds in a frying pan and dry-roast over a low heat until fragrant. When cool, grind in a blender, then add garlic, ginger and lemon zest and blend until fine. Finally, add the olive oil and pomegranate molasses until a thick paste is formed. Score fat side of the lamb and season with salt and pepper, then rub spice mixture into the meat. To cook, roast the shoulder uncovered in a 250°C oven for 20 minutes. Remove and deglaze the pan with the red wine, add beef stock and lemon zest, then cover and return to the oven, cooking at 150°C for 4 hours. At an age when most teens are awkwardly navigating their way through high school, Crowne Plaza Christchurch’s new executive chef Mirco Turtschi’s culinary journey had already begun. The gourmet ninja at the swanky hotel’s slick new eatery Market Place Restaurant started his chef apprenticeship back in Switzerland at just 15, working his way up through the ranks before heading to New Zealand’s shores 11 years later. Honing his skills and acclimatising himself to the country’s fresh produce at cafés in Blenheim and Picton, he then went on to rock some of country’s finest hotel kitchens at the Langham Hotel in Auckland and Crowne Plaza Queenstown with his respectful handling of both regions’ finest ingredients. Continuing his reputation for gastronomic excellence in Christchurch, Mirco has created a market-style dining experience that showcases his careful selection of Canterbury’s finest and freshest ‘market plates’, served up in a rustic style and designed to share. Continuing the shared theme, Market Place also offers up its signature dish – The Classic Roast, a 10-hour, slow-cooked lamb shoulder and roast veges. crowneplaza.com/christchurch

In store you'll find signature pieces especially selected by Lynn herself as well as their renowned styling service. lynnwoodsonlinestore.co.nz What is the must have piece for spring? A beautiful floral dress and we’ve got you covered! Who inspires your style? Michelle Obama. Her style and grace is classic with a twist.

Describe your perfect night? Most people would say a quiet night in, but my perfect night is spent with my children and grandchildren, and it is far from quiet! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. What is the most common fashion mistake? Not wearing the correct underwear is the most common, but we are all time-poor, and it is time-consuming for women to get this done. Can you give us three essential fashion tips for the spring racing season? 1 – Find a dress that fits your body shape. 2 – Make sure your accessories are balanced and co-ordinate with your outfit. 3 – If you're walking on grass, don’t forget your heel protectors. And have a fun day out! What’s your favourite pastime? When I get time, I enjoy reading a great book. I am currently reading historical fiction The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.

What should everyone throw out of their wardrobes immediately? Anything you haven’t worn for a year; chances are you’ll never wear it again. Where do you go to escape in the city? And who could resist the view, it’s stunning! I could be anywhere in the world at that moment, and that’s the perfect escape, isn't it? Who are the up-and-coming designers to look out for? We pride ourselves on offering a boutique styling service, where we take the time to get a look that suits your style and your budget. No one should leave home without... Their lipstick!

Dr Libby Live

GOOD LIFE

Dr Libby hits Christchurch in October and November. Dr Libby’s Food Frustrations (12 & 18 Oct) takes all the headscratching out of food. She’ll talk about good food choices and removing the guesswork around what to eat and why. Her Beautiful You Weekend (25– 26 Nov) will tap into her two decades of research and clinical experience to explore how your body works, examining the interaction of nutrition, biochemistry and emotions, and culminating with a potent action plan. drlibby.com

With Dr Libby Shift out of that winter slump and keep your body, mind and spirit motivated through the remainder of the year with my top tips for getting spring ready.

S

pring, and the more inviting weather that comes with it, presents the perfect opportunity to reinvigorate the body and mind, and shake off any residual feelings of lethargy that come from any winter hibernation. Boost your nutrient intake If you are lacking in energy, feeling tired, depleted or burnt out, chances are boosting your plant intake will make a world of difference. Loaded with vitamins, minerals, fibre, phytonutrients and, of course, antioxidants, plants feed our body with everything needed to supply us with bundles of energy in return. To enhance your nutrient intake even more, try adding a scoop of powdered greens to your daily routine. Increase your vitamin D This vitamin has many important functions in the body – from supporting our immune system function and fighting disease to boosting our metabolism. Studies also suggest that it can help with low mood. A large percentage of New Zealanders have suboptimal levels of vitamin D so, given its essential role in the body, it’s a great thing to get checked with your health

practitioner. Direct sunshine or supplements can help boost vitamin D levels. Prioritise a morning movement practice Starting our day with a nourishing practice such as a gentle yoga session, pilates class or stretching routine can help to get our body and mind moving. Alternatively, you might like to begin your day with a walk. Direct sunlight can assist the production of serotonin – our feel good, happy, calm and content hormone. Early morning is the best time to establish this impact on mood and energy. Remember how to say ‘no’ When we don’t give ourselves enough time to rest, relax and enjoy life, drive ourselves too hard and perceive ourselves to be under constant pressure, we severely impair our ability to cope with stress and pressure. Instead of doing everything for everyone else and taking on more and more, learn how to flex that ‘no’ muscle more effectively. Avoid overcommitting and make more time for yourself to increase your capacity for joy and gratitude for what you have in your life already. drlibby.com

we still see plenty of vacant land in Christchurch’s CBD; however, the new and upcoming urban spaces will serve as a catalyst for additional economic activity that will support a successful downtown. Some of our new pieces in the urban landscape puzzle include: The Terraces, part of the Avon River Precinct, is an ongoing project combining improvements in the river’s ecology with high quality paving, seating and artwork. New sustainable design features such as rain gardens are integrated into the streetscape stormwater design, while theatrical lighting design contributes to a safe, engaging space at night. This popular spot will only get better when Antony Gough’s new hospitality strip opens up later this summer.

O

ne of the key features of the ‘Blueprint’ for the CBD rebuild was the proposed framework of new public urban spaces – a network of laneways, courtyards and a greater focus on the Avon River/ Ōtākaro as Christchurch’s waterfront. Five years on we are starting to see these spaces completed, with more currently under construction and expected to open in the coming months. The full rebuild of our city is going to be a ‘long game’, but we can steadily see the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle starting to form the complete picture. When you look at great cities around the world, the quality of their public spaces is a key component of their success. An authentic, attractive and people-friendly ‘public realm’ attracts more visitors, which in turn attracts business and private investment. At the moment

Pieces of the Blueprint’s South Frame are now complete, including the recently opened Mollett Street Greenway and Vanguard Square, which is tucked in between Dux Central and the Vodafone InnoV8 building. These spaces incorporate exciting planting, art, sculpture and custom lighting to create a series of gathering spaces for urban dwellers. New and old stories are being expressed through design elements, reflecting the broader story of Ōtautahi/Christchurch, including mana whenua and European settler narratives. The Margaret Mahy Family Playground, a firm favourite for all ages, is richly-detailed with a great variety of play features. The playground delights children and adults who visit from sun up to sundown – and on into the evening. Private developments including the BNZ Centre, The Crossing and the King Edward Barracks site feature laneways and internal plazas sheltered from the wind. These provide a diverse range of pedestrian-friendly places and spaces to explore, shop and socialise. Upcoming projects to look forward to include the East Frame Linear Park, more of the Avon River Precinct, a rejuvenated Victoria Square and new concepts for Cathedral Square, and many exciting private developments. The budding central city landscape is set to make Christchurch known not just as the Garden City, but also for its rich tapestry of urban places and spaces to live, work, move and socialise. canopy.co.nz

RENOVATION TIPS TO BOOST YOUR HOME’S VALUE BEFORE SELLING

W

hether you’re handy around the house or need to rely on professionals, there are numerous ways you can add value to your property prior to listing it on the market to ensure you get the best price. For quick fixes and a general tidy, touch up the paint around doors, frames and windowsills (both inside and out). Outdated or cheap-looking light fittings, including hanging lights with paper

shades (and in some instances just the bare bulbs) can inexpensively be replaced with often great results. In the kitchen sometimes all that’s needed is to switch out cupboard handles for a fresh look; however, if the bench-top has seen better days, it’s amazing the difference a new one can make. Likewise, a scuffed up hob can be off-putting but is easily replaced – potential buyers fall in love with kitchens, so you want to make yours as appealing as

possible. In the bathroom it can be as simple as replacing grout and repairing chips in the bathtub and sink, along with applying a new coat of paint to refresh the space; if a more extreme makeover is required though, consider upgrades for the taps and shower unit. When it comes to flooring, keep in mind that the floor is going to be one of the first things prospective buyers are going to look at. In most instances you’ll be able to get away with a commercial clean of carpets, but if it’s looking threadbare you’ll definitely want to invest in some new carpet. It can totally transform a house and is a lot cheaper than people think – I always recommend getting a quote. Shabby tiles and worn vinyl should also be replaced, while damaged wooden floors can be sanded back to reveal a new surface. With open-plan living becoming more popular, consider professionally removing nonstructural walls to open up living areas and totally transform your house. Outside, look to replace or repaint/stain timber decks, tidy up, and stain or paint raw timber fences (or those in unappealing colours) to complete the aesthetic. maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

s architects we are always a little hesitant to associate architecture with fashion, as, unlike fashion, architecture should be timeless, and not based on vogue or fad. The term ‘on trend’ is one that resonates in the ear of an architect like fingernails on a blackboard, as it implies an idea-less-permanent. With this said, and whether we like it or not, the relationship between architecture and fashion is far more relevant than we may think. In the purest sense both are based on structure, shape and beautifying basic necessities – i.e. clothing and shelter. Both are heavily influenced by climate, culture and individual identity, and both can also illustrate a balance between necessity and luxury. International movements in architecture and fashion have often been influenced by one another, and some of these influences are more clearly illustrated than others. Art Deco, for example, demonstrates a period when architecture, clothing, jewellery and furniture were very much aligned with one another. With such a

Cityscape catches up with CoLab Architecture’s Tobin Smith and Blair Paterson to discuss the relationship between fashion and architecture.

strong and easily identifiable aesthetic, the timelessness of the architecture can be subject to a similar lifespan as the fashion. As we’ve found our design feet in New Zealand, we have evolved a style of architecture that is unique to our local context and climate, somewhat free of outside influences. Materiality, sustainability and contextual sensibility take precedence over simply mimicking worldwide movements in trend. This considered architectural language is translating through our interior spaces to the textiles and furnishings being used. Furniture designers are aligning with this ethos of creating pieces that express a quality of thought and production and celebrate relevant tones and materials. The architecture within our own practice tends to be intentionally simple. We are drawn to forms that are strong and rational, free of unnecessary detail or stylistic complexity. Our colour palettes tend to follow these same basic principles – black, white and

105

natural material tones. These principles translate to the fixtures and furnishings we are also drawn to. For us, good design pieces should sit in harmony with one another, irrespective of age or style. Quality pieces, like good architecture, should never date. Fortunately we have a wealth of local designers and suppliers that can aid these selections. Supporting New Zealand design is important in our work and tends to influence the furnishing suggestions we put forward. One of our favorite brands that features in a number of our projects is Nonn, designed by Cameron Foggo, son of Belle Interiors’ Colin and Marj Foggo. Cameron’s designs express contemporary ideas based around timeless forms that complement our architecture. Having a local supplier in Belle Interiors means that each piece can be specifically customised to suit each project in its scale and material selection, giving people the opportunity to complement their interiors or perhaps express their own personality if they’re more daring. colabarch.co.nz

on Simons casually pulling on his helmet as we crawl out from under the barrier is the last time the big Nissan GTR seems to be entirely comfortable with what the pro racing legend and Porsche and Ferrari test driver is subjecting it to. I’m riding shotgun and Simons is tearing the world’s most formidable racing circuit, the Nürburgring Nordschleife (AKA Green Hell), a new one. As bucket list tick-offs go, it’s a biggie. Squealing tyres, expertly gathered up slides and brutal early accelerations out of every corner give us a masterclass in car control, as well as a tour-de-force highlights reel of Nissan’s wonder car. What a track! Anything other than complete

commitment sees you shedding valuable lap time, and after experiencing it in all its brutal glory alongside Simons, I can see why manufacturers regard a Nürburgring lap time as such a badge of honour. The former GP track was famously excluded from the F1 championship in 1977 for being too dangerous (it has a body count of over 200), and its 20.8 kilometres through the Eifel forest is both beautiful and deadly, with little in the way of run off even now; this makes the late Stefan Bellof’s fastest ever lap of 6 minutes and 11 seconds, set in 1983, an abject lesson in bravery. Still used for endurance and GT3 racing today, the ‘Ring is open at selected times to the general public, and when we

TRAVEL The Bucket List

“... brutal early accelerations out of every corner give us a masterclass in car control ...” fronted up the VLN (German endurance championship) race was in progress. And while I had seen plenty of YouTube laps, actually viewing the elevation changes and the narrowness of the section of the track from our viewing position made Bathurst seem flat and expansive. In an ideal world, I would have been behind the wheel; given the complexity of the track and our lack of time though, the prospect of explaining to Europcar how our diesel Golf came to a sticky end was very unappealing. Instead we take the Golf back to Hotel am Tiergarten. Crammed with racing memorabilia, it’s owned by the parents of race car driver and sometimes Top Gear presenter Sabine Schmitz, and has been the perfect base from which to plan our Nürburgring experience.

As a self-confessed enthusiast of all things automotive, my bucket list incorporates a fair number of car and motorsport experiences and, along with a mate (to make things properly epic, these things are always best embarked on with a mate!), I managed to tick several more off on this trip. We had hit the road in Florence, picking up our supposed-to-be-Fiat 500 (are they ever what you ordered?), and headed north to Bologna and on to Modena. About now you’re probably thinking Ferrari, but we were headed to a masterful workshop of carbon fibre and beautiful automotive works of art, Horacio Pagani’s factory complex. Pagani hand-builds hugely expensive supercars. Bespoke and made from the latest materials and technologies, their cars are both a glimpse into how the Italian artisans of yesteryear might have worked, and how a US$1.5m price tag is justified (kind of). From there it was onto Ferrari; however, German politician Angela Merkel’s visit on the day we had intended to check in threw a proverbial spanner. But it all worked out alright when we deviated to Sant Agata’s Lamborghini Museum and clapped eyes on what is one of the most beautiful cars ever made – the Lamborghini Miura. Conveniently, the Italian sports car makers are all clustered together, making a trip easily achievable in one or two days either on tour, or independently. The Italian highlight? Pagani.

6

112

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Spring 17

4

Our Italian journey, however, was just a teaser for the real event – Germany! While our wives headed south to the Amalfi Coast, we flew to Munich. The German car museums are famous the world over for charting our love affair with their automobiles, with each manufacturer putting their unique mark on their presentation. BMW, in Munich, is very much about the brand and their evolution, including a very open (if not often favourable) section dedicated to the war years and their contribution.

The Bucket List TRAVEL

5

7 8 In Stuttgart Porsche are all about innovation, engineering and their motorsport success. And with a staggering number of fabulous and significant motorsport cars on display, we were left wide-eyed and open-mouthed. From 917ks to 911 RSRs through to epic Rothmans-liveried Le Mans 956s, they were all there and looked immaculate. The German high point though, without a doubt, is the Mercedes Benz Museum (also in Stuttgart), a futuristic space where, over nine levels, you can track the continuous

timeline of more than 130 years of automotive history, starting in 1886 and through to the present day and into the future – a must see! What’s more, the buildings the museums occupy are architectural masterpieces in their own right, with each subsequent museum building trying to upstage the last. From here, it was on to Green Hell, where our experience on the ‘Ring served to perfectly finish off a trip that by any measure had been a car enthusiast’s dream.

Casa Escobar

Narcos fans rejoice – you too can walk in the footsteps of notorious Colombian drug lord/80s cocaine magnate Pablo Escobar, and in one of his former oceanfront mansions, no less. Turned out by New York gallerist Lio Malca, Design Hotels™ Casa Malca has become one of Mexico’s hottest high-end destinations since the brutal TV series based on the head of the Medellin Cartel aired. In the transformation of the former cocaine king’s beachfront hideout in Tulum into a ritzy five star boutique art hotel adorned with contemporary works from the likes of KAWS, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Malca has, like the mansion’s previous owner, spared no expense; the lavish digs are kitted out with Egyptian cotton linens, rainfall showers and locally-made artisanal products. The once-abandoned hideout, appropriately featuring bulletproof walls and tunnel, has been expanded into a 35-room resort featuring three swimming pools – one of which is underground(!) – rotates art from Malca’s own collection, and features stunning gourmet fare that showcases local ingredients. The Instagram-worthy escape also features hammocks in the Caribbean Sea-facing rooms, perfect for sacking out with a book and cocktail – or keeping lookout for the coastguard. designhotels.com

ADVENTURE ISLAND Images: Bamba Sourang, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority & The Westin Mauritius Turtle Bay Resort & Spa

Adrenaline and luxury go hand in hand on the rainbow island nation of Mauritius.

I

n the few moments it takes to navigate the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport car park, our driver covers a potted history of his remarkable island home before tackling our numerous no doubt frequentlyasked questions (including the national drink – Phoenix Beer: “So delicious, so Mauritius”). Fields of sugar cane (much of it harvested by hand), pineapples, tea (also hand-picked) and ginger make way for the busy streets of the French-influenced capital Port Louis as we head for our destination. Port Louis offers colourful local markets, exclusive shopping, hip nightlife and avant-garde dining; it’s a fascinating insight into the melting pot of Mauritian life. Benefiting from an exotic blend of Indian, African, Chinese and European heritages, Mauritius reflects a microcosm of world cultures. Indeed, there are few places in the world where you’ll find churches, pagodas, temples and mosques harmoniously

coexisting within walking distance of each other. In little over an hour, having driven diagonally across the 1,865-square-kilometre island from the airport in the south-east to the north-west, we arrive at waterfront lux of The Westin Mauritius Turtle Bay Resort & Spa in time for cocktails at sunset. We start the next day flying through forest canopies on zip lines across impossibly lush and 165-metres-deep canyons split by snaking rivers in the wildlife haven of Yemen Reserve with Casela World of Adventures, a leading operator in the booming eco-adventure tourism sector on the coveted tropical island paradise – they also offer walking with lions and safari by Segway. We then head way off the beaten track with a 4WD tour, our four-wheel drive leapfroging up a steep incline on the Moka Range, where corrugations and potholes outnumber intact surface area in a lunar landscape. The resulting ride elicits peals of laughter and a Blair Witch Project-style home movie

from the honeymooning Estonians riding in the back. At the summit we’re rewarded with postcard panoramas of tangled jungle tumbling toward palm-fringed white sands and glassy turquoise lagoons, which are flanked by near 360-degree coral reefs. Drinking in paradise found before enjoying a traditional Mauritian lunch at the water’s edge in Telfair Garden on the south coast, we round out the day discovering the wave-carved Natural Bridge and snorkelling among extensive coral gardens and their neon-lit inhabitants. I lower my heart rate with a glacial national drink, stretched out in preparation for sunset at Turtle Bay Resort, where traditional local architecture meets ocean-front opulence. Epitomising the uber-lux lifestyle synonymous with a Mauritian escape, the resort’s thatch-roofed tranquillity perfectly balances the day’s activities. Adventure and relaxation; it’s the best of both worlds on one island.

WHAT’S ON

Appropriately bursting with life for spring, the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s Tchaikovsky 5 programme on September 16 at Charles Luney Auditorium lines up some poignant Elgar (Sospiri op. 70), a serving of lyrical Barber (Concerto for Violin op. 14) and the eponymous bit of Russian drama from ol’ Pyotr Ilyich himself: Symphony No. 5 op. 64 E minor, a grandiose, unapologetically romantic work with a special place in the orchestral repertoire. The orchestra is joined for the first time by British guest artist and rising star Tamsin Waley-Cohen; this is yet another Masterworks concert from the CSO earning the name in every sense. cso.co.nz

Lorde’s much-anticipated, long-awaited sophomore album Melodrama has taken the world by storm – duh – and she’s in hot demand all over the world, but isn’t forgetting her roots; the Melodrama World Tour rolls down the country in November. She’ll be hitting some iconic New Zealand venues, including our own Isaac Theatre Royal on both November 8 and 9, which will be two of the biggest gigs of the year for the lucky few– if you haven’t got your ticket sorted out yet, you’re all out of luck, as both gigs sold out in about three seconds flat. PAPERS, PLEASE In-the-know art enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting Lonnie Hutchinson’s new month-long solo show opening at The Central on September 28. The exhibition will feature new works including building paper drops, free standing floor work, a suspended piece, and other works on paper alongside some of the back catalogue of the increasingly prominent artist. Recently creating the shaped metal ‘feather’ cladding on the south side of Christchurch’s new Justice Department precinct to considerable acclaim, Hutchinson is renowned for using black building paper in strikingly beautiful ways that reflect her Pacific background. thecentral.co.nz

THE LAST WORD

REGGAE KNIGHTS

Cityscape caught up with legendary British reggae band UB40’s resident film geek and drummer extraordinaire Jimmy Brown ahead of their November gig in the city.

H

ow hard was it starting out as a reggae band back in the 80s? For UB40 it really wasn’t so hard. We had been playing for less than a year before our first album stormed the charts. In fact, it all happened a bit quick and we didn’t get time to catch our breath. We were very lucky to be in the right place with the right sound at the right time. What is your favourite activity outside of music? I’m a massive movie buff. If I don’t watch at least one movie a day I feel cheated. I also think of myself as a bit of a political pundit. UB40 supported Jeremy Corbyn during the last election. Politics in the UK is exciting right now. What albums have you got on high-rotation? I’m stuck in the 1990s at the moment. Old drum and bass and hip-hop – proper dad music! You’ve been together for almost 4 decades, how do you keep the magic alive on stage? The magic just happens. It’s the chemistry between band and audience. When we played our first gig we got a great response from the audience. That was over 40 years ago, and today the reaction is the same.

128

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Spring 17

How does it feel watching the audience sing along to your songs? Seeing thousands of people singing along to words and music you have written is the best feeling imaginable. Better than drugs! What have you got in store for your Christchurch gig? Our gigs will be covering 40 years of our music, dating all the way back to our first album [1980’s Signing Off], and we’ll be playing some very well-known hits along the way, as well as some brand new material. What’s your favourite song to perform when you’re touring? I always enjoy playing new music the most. Whichever the latest album is. What are you looking forward to doing while you’re here? We have many, many friends in New Zealand, so we will probably spend most of our time catching up. Does red red wine still make you feel so fine? Some of the guys in the band love their red wine. I’m more of a champagne and Irish whisky man myself! UB40 – The Hits & More Horncastle Arena, November 17 ticketek.co.nz
