Aye, There’s The Dub
Heads up Cityscapers, here comes a gig as Christchurch as quake stories and asking what school people went to: the local legends and musical pioneers who went large, Salmonella Dub, are celebrating 25 years of making awesome Kiwi music by hooking back up with ol’ mate Tiki Taane for a massive anniversary reunion concert in North Hagley Park on January 13. The Salmonella Dub boys are set to celebrate an impressive career so far – that’s seven studio albums, three remix albums, a live album with the NZSO, four EPs, over 270 festival appearances and five Tui Awards, among other big numbers – with what founding member Andrew Penman is describing as “…an iconic, audio-visual, bass heavy, back catalogue mash up with a treasure chest of guests”. In Christchurch those guests are Fat Freddy’s Drop and Ladi6 (yuss!), which lines things up for a truly epic afternoon and evening of sweet tunes. It’s little wonder Tiki is excited as well: “To be able to help my old bandmates and celebrate 25 years of Salmonella Dub is a glorious prospect, and probably a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence – no one will want to miss this”. Travel back in time to some of those glorious weekend nights at the old Dux de Lux, or just acquaint yourself with the fantastic work of one of New Zealand’s most successful acts – this’ll be a goodie! theticketfairy.com

Nitty-Gritty
After a successful first showing at Auckland’s Gus Fisher Gallery, Canterbury-born, Aucklandbased artist Ruth Watson’s critically-acclaimed Geophagy exhibition has been reworked and up-scaled specifically for CoCA’s galleries. In the exhibition (Dec 16 – Feb 18), Watson explores how our relationship to the Earth and each other is influenced by technology, with the artworks on display offering a broadspectrum picture of the ways in which technologically-inspired or caused developments such as international transportation, instant communication, digital mapping and surveillance, environmental degradation and global migration have irrevocably altered both our social fabric and the natural ecosystem. With a title that literally means ‘eating earth’, the mixed-media exhibition features a range of pieces that includes a towering sculptural installation, poetic video works and photography, each exploring our relationship with, and influence on, the world. Head in to CoCA this summer to broaden your horizons with this epic new collection of work from this major talent on the country’s contemporary art scene. coca.org.nz

PRE-TRENDING Cityscape scours the globe to find out the hot and happening trends in the gourmet scene before they hit the local scene (or bypass us completely).
Sounds of Summer
Cityscape caught up with Christchurch playlist guru Craig Shaw on the importance of nailing the ultimate summer soundtrack. The song of the summer is an elusive beast under any circumstances, and in New Zealand music, it is even slipperier. A true song of the summer is a pop phenomenon, for one thing. It requires consensus, the knowledge that on beaches and in cars from coast to coast, people are playing the same song and feeling the same thing – even if it’s just thinking: “Now this, this is the song of the summer!” It’s on the Bluetooth speaker when eating fish ‘n chips, in the fashion shop when searching for new threads and will – no doubt – be remixed for NYE gigs. Will it be a new David Dallas tune, some international pop track or something off the new The Black Seeds album Fabric? (Which, by the way, is exceptional!) At this stage we are simply crystal ball gazing, but what really matters is that we stay up-to-date with our finger on the pulse. Don’t get caught with your pants down this summer listening to the same generic drab that you find in your standard sausage roll shop come early Tuesday morning! Invest in the listening experience, create your own identity and keep your finger on the pulse when it comes to music. shawconsulting.co.nz

Movers & Shakers
Cityscape caught up with Sister Kong’s legendary Black Forest-trained bar tsar Markus Teck, the man behind such killer cocktails as the Soho Sour (see recipe on page 39). What’s your signature cocktail? The Causeway Bay Negroni – I LOVE Negronis! I’m from the Black Forest in Germany and it is famous for fruit brandies. Additionally, using an oak barrel to age the cocktail just makes it smooth! What’s the secret to a killer cocktail? Find an easy way to get a big effect and a nice experience while enjoying your drink. A perfect drink needs to create good memories! Favourite place to go for a big night? The Vicinity, a nice spot and home to the Red Light District, Louis and Sister Kong all within walking distance. Where’s Christchurch’s hidden gem? It’s on the Sister Kong cocktail list - The Hidden Gem cocktail. Favourite Sunday afternoon spot? Vesuvio! Relaxing with good wine and cheese – good times!
High Performer Expect to see some seriously cool revamps at Armstrong Prestige with the news that the Christchurch dealership has been given the green light to be one of just two AMG Performance Centres in the country. Due to be finished mid next year, the exclusive addition will coincide with the dealership’s slick new revamp and showcase the badge’s high performance arm as well as creating a stunning new space to host events.
#CAPTAKE2 It was the roughest of possible starts for the Christchurch Adventure Park, which had been open for just a couple of months before being massively damaged by this year’s Port Hills fire. But there’s awesome news after a tough 10 months with the park’s reopening, which they’re dubbing #captake2. From December 5, the park will be open with all of its village facilities operating as well as its chairlift, zipline tour, and Coaching I Green Trail. They're only charging for the ride up; visitors can leg it to the top, take advantage of the amazing views (sans trees) then take the chairlift down and enjoy a cold one at the café/bar, which will be serving everything from brunch through to dinner. With the park’s trail network having suffered significantly in the fires, trails will be opened in a staggered fashion as they become available over the summer, with the goal of rebuilding the trail offering to the point that it is similar to what was offered pre-fire by the end of March. Look out for opening weekend festivities on December 9 & 10, and the well-earned Welcome Back party on December 19. christchurchadventurepark.com

Super Heroic The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 2018 season officially opens with the return of the Lamb & Hayward Masterworks series on February 24 at the Air Force Museum. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was originally dedicated to a man who, at the time of composition, was the First Consul of France: one Napoleon Bonaparte. Beethoven believed he embodied the democratic, anti-monarchical ideals of the French Revolution. Oops; not so much, Ludwig. The work we now know as Eroica is a milestone composition that has come to mark the beginning of the Romantic period in classical music. Also appearing on the concert programme is the world premiere of Christchurch composer John Young’s Spirit, commissioned for this occasion by the CSO (see page 128 for more), while renowned Russian violinist Natalia Lomeiko (pictured) also revisits the CSO to perform Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor. cso.co.nz

WORLD BUSKERS FESTIVAL The World Buskers Festival turns 25 this year, and is still a city (and world!) favourite. It’s their birthday, but we get the presents; the line-up for this special anniversary includes our own globe-conquering Tape Face premiering his brand new show, RuPaul’s Drag Race star Ginger Minj in her amazing solo musical comedy Crossdresser For Christ, the fabulous Topp Twins in a new show of songs and spoons, Jonny Woo and Le Gateau Chocolat bringing us hilarious hijinks in the ‘Les Misérmassacre’ cabaret of A Night At The Musicals, and much, much more besides. We warn you guys every year, and we won’t stop now; the popular shows in the fest will sell out, so make sure you get in early to make sure you don’t miss out – if you haven’t already!
THE GREAT KIWI BEER FESTIVAL This epic afternoon and evening dedicated to everyone’s favourite amber liquid is the country’s largest outdoor beer fest, and is simply heaven for hopheads (and fans of cider – represent!). Craft breweries pour into Hagley Park from all over the place to pour all afternoon – you’ll be navigating over 300 beers and ciders on tap (including one-off festival brews) and it’s only a shame that it’s impossible to try them all! You’ll also find plenty of the region’s and city’s best food along with a huge line-up of music all day led by Kiwi legend Dave Dobbyn (yuss) and including Sola Rosa, Swamp Thing, and locals The Eastern and Assembly Required. Cooking demonstrations and beer seminars round off the city’s favourite beerstravaganza.

SELWYN SOUNDS The summer outing out in Lincoln is back for its second crack in 2018 with another sweet bill of musical talent, a top array of the region’s finest food (think Pizzacarto and Coq au Van Rotisserie), licensed bar areas and interesting stalls at the Lincoln Domain. With nine bands rocking one epic day, it’s another nostalgia-fuelled line-up this year. Leading the charge is headlining force of nature and Aussie rock legend (and recent author) Jimmy Barnes. Ol’ Barnesy’s joined by a bangin' Anzac all-star line-up including Christchurch legends The Feelers and The Narcs alongside Mental as Anything, The Mockers, Stellar, The Warratahs and The Lady Killers – a slaying Kiwi trifecta of talent in the form of Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke and Suzanne Lynch. With 3 stages and more than 30 performers rocking over 12 magical hours, you’ll get down with the likes of headliner and UK grime pioneer Dizzee Rascal (get prepared to go ‘Bonkers’!), Scottish rock and roll wild bunch Primal Scream, electro-pop supergroup Confidence Man, US hip hop royalty Black Milk, and Finland’s finest alt-rockers LAB, plus New Zealand’s own State of Mind and homegrown girl made good Theia, with still more artist announcements to come. Add a round-up of killer eats and drinks options and this is looking like a day out for the ages.
ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL Injecting an infusion of French cool into the city’s cinema scene, the Alliance Française French Film Festival is a godsend to Francophiles, film fans, and those who just want to get a little bit of je ne sais quoi into their lives. Powering out an epic line-up of over 30 French language films, the festival includes comedy, drama, genre fare and prestige titles hot from festivals like Cannes and Toronto. RHYTHM & ALPS Rhythm & Alps is the South Island’s biggest New Year’s festival, attracting thousands of happy campers to the stunning scenery of the Cardrona Valley, with a massive wall of music flowing virtually non-stop the entire time. This year the line-up is headlined by the sound of Kiwi summer themselves, Fat Freddy’s Drop – they’re joined by Tash Sultana, Little Dragon, Schoolboy Q, Wilkinson, Goldie, and many, many, (many!) more.
HOKITIKA WILDFOODS FESTIVAL A food festival for the brave, Hokitika’s annual Wild Foods Festival channels the wild West Coast spirit. Lucky/brave attendees can tuck into a number of exquisite gourmet options, but’s it the ‘wild’ fare that has made the festival’s name. Huhu grubs are a given, but you'll also find the likes of fish eyes, scorpions and ‘mountain oysters’. There’s also live music all day, cooking tips and the famed Feral Fashion show.
GOMEDIA COMEDY CARNIVAL This locally-grown comedy fest that celebrates the best of local comedy talent keeps getting bigger each year. 2018's edition sees a host of local and national talent such as Tim Batt, Justin Rusty White, and Li'i Alaimoana joined by acclaimed international acts including Marcel Lucont (UK) and Charmian Hughes (UK, pictured) for a big three weeks of laughs, with something for comedy lovers of all stripes.
THE VIP EXPERIENCE Yes, they’re expensive and ‘VIP’ might not necessarily be the best descriptor
when you’re 3 deep at the bar – but they do have benefits, including all-day food and swanky chill zones. VIP zones near the stage also offer uninterrupted views of all the action. To work out if the VIP experience is for you, use A) Economics – are you likely to spend more than the cost of the VIP ticket with entrance, food and drinks? If so, the all-inclusive VIP package could even save you a few dollars; or B) Psychology – if standing shoulder-tosweaty-shoulder amidst the heaving masses sounds too much (are festivals really your thing?), the VIP area offers an excellent reprieve – and will also drive non-VIP friends mad when you swan off to hit up the open bar.

Some of these out-of-town festivals are just so awesome you’ve really got no choice but to pack up the car and make tracks across the country – road trips and festivals go hand-in-hand (though flying is acceptable for the time poor). But there's local goodness afoot too! Here’s our pick of the hottest.
FOOD & WINE Hungry? Summer’s high-season for the country’s best food fests. Highlights on the culinary festival scene include the annual Hagley Park fave South Island Wine & Food Festival on December 2, rocking top drops from more than 40 wineries alongside some of the city’s top foodie offerings all set to the soundtrack of a killer line-up of live music, including headliners The Black Seeds. In Mt Maunganui, Beast of a Feast on January 4 pairs
street food, craft brews, live music and games, while the Wellington Wine, Food & Craft Beer Festival sees the region’s best local gourmet producers and restaurants with local wineries and breweries in a summer celebration hitting Waitangi Park for a big day on January 27. Also worth putting on your radar is the boutique Bridge Pa Wine Festival (January 20), in which eight Hawke’s Bay wineries team up for a bus-around summer’s day of good wine, food, and fun, and the North Canterbury Wine & Food Festival (March 11), which showcases the outstanding wines of the Waipara region and gourmet treats from the regions’ local producers and top Christchurch chefs and restaurants. Elsewhere, the North Island Rhythm sibling Rhythm and Vines (December 29 – 31) in Gisborne is arguably New Zealand’s most renowned music festival, and makes the most of the natural charms of another stunning part of the country, basing itself at the Waiohika Estate vineyard. Raglan’s Soundsplash (January 19 – 21) invades stunning beach-side Wainui Reserve for three big days of music (including Shapeshifter and Katchafire) and summer fun. Reggae fans need to get themselves to Tauranga for One Love on January 27 & 28; this year it’s headlined by Shaggy and Magic!, who are playing New
Zealand for the first time. In Auckland, Laneway Festival (January 29) is perhaps the country’s premier indy/alt music fest and is stuffed with the too-cool-for-school, Splore’s alternative three-day fest of music and arts (February 23 – 25) on the shores of the beautiful Tapapakanga Regional Park attracts a dedicated host of mindful party animals every year, and in the capital, annual mega Kiwi music fest Homegrown (with the next edition a bit later than usual, on April 7) will rock 5 stages and 45 bands, including Shapeshifter, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Devilskin, Stan Walker, Dave Dobbyn, Che Fu, Katchafire, and many more.

THE ARTS
New Zealand Festival. Image: John McDermott
Up in Wellington, the New Zealand Festival (February 23 – March 18) is a three-week arts festival that delivers a spectacular culture injection (including music, theatre, visual arts, dance, and events for writers and readers) to the capital. This year’s event includes the chance to watch Star Wars as the NZSO performs the soundtrack live, an extraordinary adaptation of Swan Lake that swaps Tchaikovsky for Irish folk music, and the eye-popping digital interactive wonderland that is Future Playground; with this many amazing events, it might well be worth thinking of heading north for a week or two. You might be tempted to keep going too, with this year’s Auckland Arts Festival held throughout March; look for the gloriously classical to the cutting-edge, with programme highlights including the English National Ballet and a hit theatrical adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984.

There’s music on all-week round; the Garage Sessions on Monday and Tuesdays, Humpday Blues on Wednesdays, a chance to get up there yourself with karaoke on Thursdays and a ‘Hero Band’ performance on Friday and Saturday nights. Offering something for everyone, Dux Central has a menu of venues to suit your mood, with most of its musical emphasis on upstairs space the Upper Dux, which plays host to both live bands and DJ sets on weekends for head-nodding along with a beer or getting up and cutting some shapes on the dance floor. From Thursday to Sunday Stranges Lane’s Orleans and Strange & Co commence a-rockin’, with plenty of live music going on at both the Creole-flavoured Orleans and the urban sophistication of Strange & Co, with one or two different sets at both each night. It’s an eclectic mix
– look out for DJ sets, solo jams with local music legends like Lindon Puffin, funky jazz trios, and rock covers. Multi-tasking Pomeroy’s mission to be a great community pub naturally includes an emphasis on music, and their monthly calendar is always jam-packed with spots for regular favourites that turn out nights and afternoons of jazz, folk, blues, and acoustic sets, all lubricated for listening by their amazing range of craft beer. Devilish Mary & The Holy Rollers are regulars; you might also want to check out the swingin’ beats of King Tubbs and the chilled out guitar sound of Harpy & The Noise. Upstairs at Vic Street haunt Boo Radley’s you’ll find regular gigs on Friday and Saturdays turning out a couple of great sets each night, while fun Thursday night sessions are also a regular and their Wednesday night open mics are becoming a city go-to for checking out up-and-coming musical talent. Unsurprisingly for a dedicated late-night venue, St Asaph Street’s swishy Japaneseinspired fave Empire turns up the tunes loud Thursdays to Sundays. Expect thumping DJ sets, drum n’ bass and more. Neighbouring hot Havana night spot and Radio Hauraki fave The Cuban turns out bodacious Thursday, Friday and Saturday music nights with regular slots for busy local soloist performers like Nick Lee, Antony Pickard, and Topia, but also cranks it up from time to time with bigger bands and special themed party events. From here it’s a short trip to Italy where Baretta’s epic live music scene cranks up every Friday and Saturday night, easing you in

SUMMER JAMS
JAZZY, BLUES & SUNNY ARVOS
If it’s a swishy, laid back affair you’re after you can’t beat the endless charms of Vesuvio Jazz & Tapas Bar. Unique in the city and perhaps the entire South Island (and most of the North), Vesuvio’s sophisticated and intimate venue is a dedicated host to regular gigs, with an emphasis on jazz – their stellar cast of soloists, instrumental duos, and ensembles is in action
every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. Between sets you can dip into their international wine selection (with over 50 by the glass), primo cocktails and a seriously delectable tapas menu. In Addington Dim 7th Jazz & Whisky Bar have jazz in their name, and you’ll find jazz outfits like Vintage Blue and Heather Webb performing there on the regular, but there’s a wider range of groups on offer, too. Discover Gatsbyesque swag and sophistication at The Happening Bar & Kitchen, which is home to a rotating roll call of some of the city’s best blues at the weekends. For sunny Sunday sessionals you can’t beat a trip through the tunnel to the portside magic of Lyttelton’s Freemans where, out on the primo deck space, local jazz legend Carmel Courtney and a rotating list of super talented friends fire up a most excellent soundtrack for your long, lazy afternoon over a platter or authentic Italian-style pizza. Jazzy Sunday afternoons abound also at Dux Central where, watching the city regenerate around you from one of the city’s finest vantage spots, you can enjoy a Ginger Tom and some sweet tunes. Look out for Pomeroy’s semi-regular Jazz School Jam sessions, while Strange & Co turns out a chilled out Sunday sesh in the courtyard. For after work Friday drinks and Sunday afternoons set to a funky soundtrack in slick surrounds, head to Stealth Hospitality’s Universo Brasserie & Bar. It’s the perfect backdrop for kicking back with a drink and a platter, ideally in some afternoon or evening sun on the courtyard
outside the Christchurch Art Gallery. For a fine folk music fix, swing by The Brewery’s courtyard at The Tannery, where you’ll find their iconic Sunday Sit Down Get Down where you can catch local and touring international acts perform a low-key concert for free!
GIGS TO CATCH
This summer is turning out some primo concerts and gigs. Be sure to catch the Sol3 Mio lads getting their yuletide on with some p-opera in Hagley Park, Aussie brother and sister duo behind mega-smash ‘Big Jet Plane’ Angus & Julia Stone at Isaac Theatre Royal, and SummerTime’s epic line-up of music in the city, including the ever popular Lazy Sundays and all new Friday lunchtime jams City Sounds. Catch local band made good (internationally good!) Salmonella Dub celebrating their 25th anniversary with the return of former bandmate Tiki Taane at Hagley Park. Welcome back the 90s with heavy hitters Boys II Men & TLC at Horncastle Arena and put Incubus on your radar for March, also at Horncastle Arena. For a full day extravaganza, get yourself along to the following music festivals: Live in the Park to catch Shapeshifter, Shihad and more, Electric Avenue’s killer line-up including Dizzee Rascal and Primal Scream, The Great Kiwi Beer Festival’s seamless marriage of bodacious craft beers, tasty eats and the legend that is Dave Dobbyn, Selwyn Sounds and Nostalgia Festival (see also our festival feature on page 22).
LOCAL TALENT Christchurch rocks some serious talent when it comes to turning out some epic musicians.
Home-grown legends include The Feelers, Bic Runga, Shapeshifter, Salmonella Dub and The Eastern, as well as rising stars Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Theia and Decades. For guaranteed good times/tunes, keep an ear out for some of Cityscape’s faves including fiery baptism revivalists Devilish Mary & The Holy Rollers led by inimitable chanteuse Anita Clark, Stars In Their Eyes alumni Mandy Pickering, go hard or go home rockers The Easy Hearts, ballsy blues duo Assembly Required, covers killers Smashbox and Ctrl-Alt-Rock and the husky tones of Lyttelton’s Jazz high priestess Carmel Courtney, whose two-saxes-one-mouth routine has to be seen to be believed.

Over at The Tannery in Woolston, Blue Smoke puts the focus firmly on the music with a line-up of top international and local acts served in its epic barn-style space and matched to a killer line-up of craft brews made next door. hristchurch (and its surrounding area) is blessed with numerous tracks and walks perfect for grabbing some fresh air, checking out some cool sights, or scoring a back-to-nature soul fix. URBAN EXCURSIONS If you don’t have occasion to get into the central city much (and what are you doing?!), it can be a struggle to keep up with all the changes. Fortunately Ōtākaro understands that feeling, and have put together a few short walk ideas on a handy map to reacquaint you with our changing CBD and keep you up to date with some of the developments going on. The walks will direct you to take in The South Frame, The Earthquake Memorial, The Bus Interchange, Victoria Square, The Convention Centre site, The Margaret Mahy Family Playground and many other new places, including interesting private developments, and offer plenty of places to stop to look and grab a drink or bite to eat along the way. 1 Lanes, Walk to the Heart, Welcome to the Arts, or the Family Park Walk – to rediscover your city. Happily for art lovers, SCAPE’S 2017 Public Season has been extended, keeping both of their central city art walks for summer exploration. The legacy (permanent) artwork trail is a good option at any time, while many artworks remain on this season’s trail too, with the SCAPE App keeping you all up to date with what to find where. You’ll definitely want to check out the city’s new permanent legacy artwork, Seung Yul Oh’s Conduct Cumulus, in the South Quad of the Arts Centre. Hit the artistic triangle too of the Christchurch Art Gallery, CoCA and The Central at the Arts Centre with a comfy stroll on a Saturday afternoon to check in further with the latest on the city’s art scene, including the Big Walls – recharge with a coffee and eats at the Arts Centre or new Stealth Hospitality outfit Universo at the Art Gallery. You might also want to take it upon yourself to do a bit of exploring of
your own – our new CBD is well worth a curious meander. Take in the new laneways and hotspots around Little High Eatery, the Innovation Precinct, The Crossing, St Asaph Street’s Boxed Quarter, and the ANZ and BNZ Centres and follow your nose.

SUBURBIA Explore the ‘burbs, where there’s much to discover. On the Woolston Wharves and River Walk you can get a glimpse at how the Heathcote River would have looked before European settlement, and check out the sites of wharves and jetties where Christchurch’s produce was loaded and unloaded in the early days on this stroll down memory lane – it’s also handily close to The Tannery, where refuelling and retail therapy awaits. Head for city fave Riccarton Bush to stroll through ancient stands of 600-year-old Kahikatea trees set in 12 hectares of native forest, parkland and historic buildings hidden in the city. If it’s Saturday, hit the Christchurch Famers’ Market too. Looking to stroll? Styx Mill Conservation Reserve near Northwood offers some very pleasant tracks. Hit the Panako Walkway, a breezy 40 minute walk past wetlands and pond, with a viewing platform along the way. There’s more wetlands to explore via the Travis Wetlands Walk, a circuit track that circumnavigates Burwood’s Travis Wetland Nature Heritage Park, which plays host to a variety of birdlife and vegetation. In Burnside, Jellie Park is well known for its aquatic facilities, but the lake out the back and the pleasant walkways around it are a little bit on the lowdown! Head past the pool complex towards the northwest from Ilam Road. The Halswell Quarry always seems bigger than you’d expect – it’s not just a former quarry but home to six interesting sister city gardens, historic sites, and three permanent orienteering courses. The Quarry Rim track will take you up and

THEM THAR HILLS How lucky are we to have the Port Hills in our backyard? Don’t forget these killer walks. An oldie but a goodie: the Bridle Path is the granddaddy of Christchurch walks. People have been traversing the thigh-busting steepness of the original route between Lyttelton and Christchurch since the 1850s. Clock the views, then celebrate your triumph portside at Freeman’s in Lyttelton with a well-earned beer/wine and pizza on their deck, or nip back the other way over the
hill and keep things historical at Heathcote institution the Valley Inn Tavern. Another Port Hills fave, old Māori walking trail the Rapaki Track is an easier graft than the Bridle Path. At the top, take in expansive views over Quail Island and then the city and coastline on your descent. A 10 minute walk up to the summit of Mt Vernon while you’re here is also well worth the extra effort. For the more hard-core adventurous types, The Crater Rim Track offers spectacular views of the peninsula along its entire length. We’d suggest tackling the section from the Godley Head car park to the Urumau Reserve Track junction, a 2-and-a-half hour jaunt

that can start with an exploration of the historic gun emplacement buildings at the heads – digging those hand-dug tunnels! – before producing excellent views on either side along the ridge line and passing through Buckleys Bay Scenic Reserve. Victoria Park, made famous by Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, is criss-crossed with an array of trails that reward a casual approach – head up and have a look to see what takes your fancy. To tick off a landmark, go for the Sugarloaf Circuit, which takes you from the Sign of the Kiwi up to the prominent transmission tower atop Sugarloaf. An absolute classic, the Godley Head Walkway is a

10 trifling 8-kilometre 3-hour coastline hugging bonanza of epic ocean horizons, cool baches (yes, you want to take the Boulder Bay detour) rolling hills and, on a clear day, Kaikoura Ranges vistas. Looking for a one-way, uphill excursion? The newly reopened Christchurch Adventure Park is back on its feet. Head to the park in Cracroft to check out the sweet village facilities and tackle the uphill trail – it’s steep but the views are awesome and the good news is a ride back down on the chairlift is free, and will drop you off handily placed at their licensed café for a cold Cassels on the deck in the sun.
FURTHER AFIELD An easy sell, the Waipara Valley Vineyard Trail combines a cornucopia of world-class vineyards, historic farms, and Greening Waipara Biodiversity Trails, along with the historical steam train at Weka Pass Railway – and it’s all set to the stunning backdrop of the main divide. While not on the Trail, Pegasus Bay Winery and Restaurant and Waipara Hills Winery are worthy detours and considerable rewards
for trail-weary walkers. For something more substantial, you’ll need to set aside a day to tackle Mt Herbert, the highest point on Banks Peninsula – but it’s totally worth it for the awesome views. Make a steeper ascent from Orton Bradley Park or a longer, steadier one from the Diamond Harbour settlement; keep an eye on the weather forecast as well as current track conditions at the DOC website. Want the big views? You gotta put in the big effort, and the Mount Grey/Maukatere Track to the summit is a 15.5 kilometre show pony that offers some of Canterbury’s finest views (we kid you not!) on the approximately 6-hour return hike. Head up the Mt Grey/Maukatere Track on the way up and if you’re feeling adventurous take the rougher Red Beech Track on the descent to maximise those outstanding vistas. Opened in March 2017, the new Ashley Gorge Loop Track takes in the gently flowing river, mature trees, native bush and birdlife – just an hour’s drive from the city, you can feel like you’ve escaped civilisation altogether and if you get inspired, you might even be
keen for a swim in the river (which remains healthy!). Spend the night at Mid Canterbury’s Mount Somers, which offers a readily accessible taste of backcountry New Zealand. Head for either Woolshed Creek or Pinnacles Huts, which both offer an easy overnight tramp that features impressive rock formations – perfect for a first-timing overnighter, even with kids. And for maximum spectacle in a short walk, the Castle Hill area has got you covered. The Kura Tawhiti Access Track may only be about 20 minutes in duration, but grants access to some truly spectacular limestone rock formations. Head off the track to explore at your own pace in this place that was tōpuni to local Ngāi Tahu iwi. For something completely different, head to Cave Stream Scenic Reserve, where the pitch-black labyrinthine namesake cave offers 594-metres of pulse-quickening exploration; you’ll have to not mind getting wet and physical and will definitely need a torch. We’re talking headlamp – your phone’s not going to cut it! Pack a lunch and a few brews and celebrate with a car park boot party after.
DON’T FORGET! Yes, it’s common sense, but it can’t be stressed enough that even in summer you need to
be prepared. To make things as comfortable as possible slap on some sunscreen, take a hat (particularly some of the gents out there that might be feeling the ravages of old Father Time slashing those follicles), water and snacks/lunch, a fully-charged phone (not just for selfies), wear comfy shoes, leave a change of clothes and a towel in the car and check out what the weather’s doing.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Universo Brasserie & Bar
I
t’s brilliant culinary alchemy of the highest order. A lightlysweet lemon puree that would normally be more aligned to a dessert has been added to the line-up of carefully layered flavours that make up the fresh oyster with crisp potato. Nestled in its half shell and topped with golden potato threads, the plump, crumbed oyster’s salty delicacy sky-rockets into the stratosphere among the symphony of complementary flavours and textures. It’s a dizzying introduction to Stealth Hospitality’s latest venture. Housed in the contemporary cool of the Christchurch Art Gallery, Universo Brasserie & Bar is equal parts edgy-Euro chic and sunny tropical escape (courtesy of towering windows and huge potted lush palms). Buttery booth seating joins designer lighting suspended from the soaring ceiling, while a pimped-out bar featuring honeycombed metal fronting rocks bodacious cocktail and wine lists covering all tastes. Our super friendly host Tereza Krisicova talks us through the finer points of the menu as we delve into the seriously
swanky cocktail list dreamed up by Stealth’s bar tsar Adam Wood. We order the fittingly tropical Barbadoes (a refreshing, fruity flavour explosion laced with white rum) from the Christchurch-streetsnamed house cocktails, as well as the decadent, heady dark chocolate smoothness of the Caffe Nero which is, without doubt, one of the city’s best espresso martinis. The oysters are joined by jet-back fluffy squid ink bread buns, perfectly cooked turbot and a delightfully feisty rouille redolent with garlic, which is mighty fine between sips of the tightly nuanced and chilled crispness of the Pegasus Bay Savignon Semillon and its zesty finish. Taking its cues from the

neighbouring gallery, the tiger’s milk ceviche is a stunning work of art; a fresh and fiery Asianinfluenced reimagining. It’s a taste-bud storming combo of fresh chilli and lime, tempered by the coconut and coriander of the raw fish staple. We’ve ordered it alongside the genius that is the deceptive, simply titled Yorkshire pudding, which houses all the ingredients of a primo Sunday lamb roast (addictive tender shreds of lamb, rich gravy, parsnip puree and mint) within an airy shell. For mains we’ve selected the super light potato gnocchi with succulent confit chicken and the earthy sweetness of a burnt onion puree. It’s a harmonious medley; hidden by a nutty parmesan foam topped with a fried egg. We also opt for the lavish trappings of warm, Asian-spiced and impossibly tender confit duck tousled with artichokes, mushroom, crunchy herbed potatoes, next level duck skin crackling and a piquant liver, date and tamarind vinaigrette. We finish off the evening with the silken seduction of the lemon tart, its sharp citric tingle contained in a beautifully short, buttery pastry. With a yoghurt ice cream, it makes an irresistible pairing with the toasted almond and sticky apricot notes of the Pegasus Bay Finale.

TEA FOR TANTALISING
Taking high society charms to new heights, Crowne Plaza Christchurch has launched one of the city’s most glamorous and pearl-clutchingly decadent high teas. Head chef Mirco Turtschi isn’t joking when he says the multi-sensory experience that pairs premium tea (or chilled bubbles should the occasion require) with three, silver-caged tiers of exquisite goodies — think dainty sandwiches, delicate golden pastries and exquisite confections – “gives the Mad Hatter and Alice a run for their money”. Enjoying the highfalutin’ tea in the polished refinery of the Social Wine Bar is the ultimate summer afternoon experience. You’ll discover a delightful contemporary twist on the standard high tea menu including macaroons, chicken liver pâté with beetroot relish, and petite vanilla crème brulées amongst other high tea all-time classics. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are also available on request. Accompanying the triple-tiered treats is a range of T2 teas, Mojo coffee and Te Hana Reserve bubbles. What’s more, famed pianist of the Crowne Plaza past Peter Lewis will be tinkling the ivories on selected dates, ensuring the most resplendent of respites. crowneplaza.com/christchurch
MEAT MARKET
Cityscape catches up with Cashmere Cuisine’s Kurt Robinson on the fine art of glazing the Christmas ham. People are often confused by glazing the Christmas ham, but I have a fool-proof glaze that’s easy and tasty (especially when used on our award-winning double Manuka-smoked free-range hams!). This is based on a cooked half ham. Start by removing the skin, and score the fat. Place the ham on a wire rack in a roasting pan with a little water in the bottom. Tightly cover in tin foil and slowly heat (don’t recook!) at 130°C for 2 – 3 hours. Remove ham, drain water, decorate with cloves, cherries, pineapple, and oranges and return to roasting pan (removing wire rack). Glaze with a mix of 2 – 3 jars of apricot jam/marmalade, 2 tbsp of brown sugar and 100 – 150mls of dry ginger ale, and return to 170°C for 40 minutes, basting every 10 minutes. Pro tip: after each basting, rotate tray for an even caramelisation. cashmerecuisine.co.nz

with Green Dinner Table’s chef Tom Riley. ASPARAGUS, BROWN RICE AND ZUCCHINI MUJADARA Making exceptional use of summer’s bounty, the key to Tom’s mujadara is to heavily caramelise the onions and zucchini to bring out the deep, rich sweet flavours that beautifully pair with the creamy hummus and fresh, clean asparagus. Serves 2 – 3 SHOPPING LIST
MAKING IT HAPPEN
1 cup brown rice
Bring a small pot of water to the boil with a pinch of salt. Cook the brown rice for 20 – 25 minutes until tender. Peel and thinly slice the onion and grate the zucchini. In a large (ideally heavy bottomed) fry pan, cook the onion on medium-high with a pinch of salt and a splash of oil for 5 – 8 minutes, stirring regularly until dark brown. Add the grated zucchini and continue to cook, stirring for another 10 minutes until the zucchini is caramelised with specks of black. Open and strain the beans and roughly chop the garlic. Combine the beans, lemon juice, garlic, water and a pinch of salt. Blend until smooth. Taste and add more salt, as required. Once the rice is cooked, strain and mix with onion and zucchini. Taste and adjust the seasoning, if necessary, and keep warm. Trim the bottom 3cm off the asparagus. Heat a large fry pan to medium with a splash of oil. Toss the asparagus in and gently stir fry for 2 minutes. Step back and add a splash of water. Cook for about 30 seconds, or until the water has evaporated, and season with salt.
4 zucchini 1 large onion 1 tin white beans 40g tahini 2 – 3 garlic cloves Juice of 1 lemon ¼ cup water 400g asparagus Handful of fresh herbs (mint, coriander and parsley) A pinch or two of sumac

A lot of exercise routines go under the name of ‘Pilates’ these days. But at Scoop Authentic Pilates they stick with the discipline in its purest form; the original teachings of Joseph Pilates, the German physical trainer who first began to develop the system while interred in England during WWI. Cityscape caught up with Ballantynes’ stylist Anna Williams on the finer points of working a multitasking summer essential. ‘Tis the season for fun, sun and festivities, and my pick for your essential summer wardrobe item is The Dress! Not only is The Dress a practical solution to any occasion, it offers classic style and a host of options. Slides, jandals or designer trainers will dress it down. Add the essential sun hat, a tote bag (my favourite right now is Yu Mei’s Veitch Tote, pictured right) and the no-excuses accessory of a fabulous pair of designer sunglasses, and you’re at the beach or a BBQ. An hour or two later, and with a simple shoe swap out from a flat to this season’s hottest trend – the embellished heel – and the addition of essential sparkles, The Dress takes you from the BBQ to an overdue Christmas catch-up with special friends. Dress lengths are
varied this season. Missing from vogue for way too long (in my opinion), is the ankle-grazing option. It screams summer and with fabrics appearing to float, you can embrace the irresistible feminine flirty look – you won’t regret it! Colours like blush; navy and green remain prominent this season, with shades of hazelnut filtering through. Even stripes and florals – those two trusty pillars of the summer print line-up – are back with more bite, more verve and more tempting iterations to make everyone look twice! So take a fresh fabric with a classic cut, add the appropriate accessories and make The Dress your gift to yourself (and your mother, your sister and your babysitter) this festive season. ballantynes.co.nz

The
GOOD LIFE With Dr Libby
Surviving the social season doesn’t have to be a slog. Making a few tweaks here and there can help maintain good health through the summer celebrations.
A
s the weather warms up and the festive season approaches, we enter one of the busiest times of the year socially. We’re incredibly fortunate for the opportunities we have to celebrate with our loved ones, but with all of the Christmas parties and entertaining at this time of year, our health can sometimes take a backseat. It’s easy to think “I’ll just start afresh in the new year” when it comes to making nutritious food choices, but it doesn’t have to be all or nothing – it can be as simple as making small dietary tweaks. Here
are a few ideas to help increase your nourishment over summer: Switch coffee for green tea: While green tea still contains caffeine, it is at a lower dose than is found in coffee. The effects of the caffeine are also buffered by Theanine, a substance in green tea that has a calming effect on the nervous system. Green tea is also rich in antioxidants. Swap lettuce for spinach: Lettuce is actually quite low in nutrients, due to its high water content. Generally speaking, the darker the vegetable, the more

nutrients you will obtain. Using baby spinach in place of lettuce means you will obtain more folate and more non-haem iron – an easy and nourishing swap! Replace wine for kombucha or soda water: With all of the end-of-year celebrations, it can be easy to consume more alcohol than usual, and your liver can take a battering. Try swapping it for kombucha, a fermented (cold) tea drink that’s great for gut health, or soda water infused with some fresh lemon, lime or berries. These will help you stay hydrated in the warmer weather, while alcohol is a diuretic so it drags water out of the body. If you do decide to drink alcohol on a special occasion, have a glass of water in between each drink to help keep your body hydrated. Trade mashed potato for cauliflower mash: While there is nothing wrong with potato – it is a whole, real food – an easy way to add additional nourishment to your diet is to swap potato for the superstar Brassica vegetable, cauliflower. Cooked cauliflower can make a beautiful puree/mash which can easily be used in place of mashed potato. Cauliflower supports your liver’s detoxification pathways in a number of ways. It contains antioxidants that support Phase 1 detoxification along with sulphur-containing nutrients that support Phase 2 detoxification activity. Your liver will love you for it! drlibby.com

generally speaking, the best look is a minimalist room with a lived-in look. If your walls are bare you might want to consider borrowing or even renting a bit of art to add colour and personality. Consider different approaches and times of day; drone shots of aerial views provide a good idea of the house’s surroundings and context in the neighbourhood and are increasingly popular, and large houses in particular should try to grab some shots at the twilight ‘magic hour’. Little touches are important as well; my photographer always ensures that the car is out of the driveway and the toilet seat is down! Taking it to the next level, I always opt to produce a video walkthrough of the house as well – this is great for out-of-town buyers or those who have commitments that prevent them from attending your open home. At around $300 for a videographer, it’s another very wise investment for sellers in this day and age. Needless to say, every rule that applies to your photography applies here, too; a video that rounds the corner into the kitchen to discover a pile of dirty dishes will turn your investment from sales tool to horror movie! maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

s they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and absolutely nothing is going to sell your house better in online and print listings than excellent photos. You simply can’t underestimate how important great images of your home are in terms of generating interest and sales enquiries, so it’s important to put the effort in to capture some great shots that show your property at its very best. Firstly, it should go without saying, you’ll want
everything impeccably clean and sparkling – this includes windows, bathroom and kitchen. Don’t be afraid to get the professionals in if you don’t have the time or inclination to do the job yourself; these photos are going to be what gets people through your house, so the investment is worth it! Similarly, it’s very important to have your garden immaculate and landscaped. Partial staging is also important; you might be happy with your glorious clutter but

Cityscape wades into the natural swimming pool movement with Canopy Landscape Architects’ Gabe Ross and Paul Roper-Gee.
W
ith greater awareness of the importance of engaging with the natural world for our physical and mental wellbeing, we are seeing many examples of natural systems being designed back into our everyday landscapes. A great example of this is the natural swimming pool concept that has been quietly spreading through backyards around the world from its origins in Germany some 30 years ago. Imagine a pool that never needs chemicals and provides a crystal clear swimming experience complete with plants, and even fish! Natural pools essentially replicate the natural processes that occur in lake and wetland systems within a closed recirculating pool. The pools are spilt into two areas – a swim zone and a filtration zone – with the water constantly circulating between the two. The vegetated
filtration zone hosts microorganisms and plants that consume the nutrients, minerals and other pathogens that would otherwise quickly lead to a rather ‘froggy’ swimming experience. Pool designs can range from a DIY natural-looking rocky pond to a modern masterpiece complete with solar heating, robot cleaners, lighting and spouts. The system is very scalable, from a small ornamental water feature through to massive commercial scale public swimming facilities. A correctly designed and maintained pool will be balanced to provide a completely chemical free, clean and clear swimming experience. Maintenance can be a little more complex as you can’t just rely on harsh chemical treatments that would unbalance or kill the natural processes that we want to keep the water clean. Like a garden, the pool biology will take
100
CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Summer 17/18
time to establish and adjust to changes to the system. As a minimum, a bottom cleaning will be needed 3 times a year, and wetland plants may need periodic pruning and thinning. While commercially-built natural pools are typically similar in cost to conventional, high-quality custom pools, there are ongoing savings in chemicals and with the added bonus that the pool becomes a year-round aquatic garden feature, rather than the typical covered or drained hole in the ground over the winter. In New Zealand there are now a number of specialist designer and contractors installing both new builds and making conversions of conventional swimming pool to natural pools. DIY projects are also possible, although engaging some expertise to make sure the hydraulics and filtration beds are optimised will save many hours of maintenance down the track. Investing in quality pumps and filters is always recommended! canopy.co.nz

metronomic precision of the traditional Swiss watch dial, which has never gone out of fashion for a century. With simple and elegant lines that strike a balance between the square and the circular, the Dial banishes the concept of the cold, brittle bathroom with its warm, welcoming elegance. As you can see, it’s easy to switch things up when it comes to the bathroom basin, but don’t disregard practicality entirely. Consider the right basin for your bathroom; wall-mounted sinks are worth considering for a minimalist look or as a space saver, while top-mounted sinks are a good choice for bathrooms with existing cabinetry and counters, and vessel basins like the Rombo or Zen are the go-to choice for a bold, striking look. It’s typically a while between bathroom makeovers, so don’t be afraid to make a strong design statement! edwardgibbon.co.nz
The New Classic Edward Gibbon’s Lesley Storm gives Cityscape the inside word on the new trend of statement hand basins designed to make your bathroom pop.
F
orget sterile and bland when it comes to hand basins. Today’s basins can be one of the features of your bathroom – even the star. The right piece can set off your whole look with a burst of colour and an eye-catching style, and there’s a wide range of aesthetics and approaches to suit the style and feel that you want to create. Art Ceram’s SCALINO (1) by Meneghello Paolelli Associati, for example, offers up an Italian soft décor take on a minimalist washbasin which is striking it in its absolute geometric rigor. The SCALINO defines and marks off the lateral space where the tapware is
mounted (in versions where tapware can be installed), lightly separating it from the hollow surface to create a clean aesthetic. Innovation is at the forefront of Art Ceram’s processes, which also shows in their stunning Rombo (2) design, which features a ceramic surface inspired by the textiles world in range of classic designs and bold, colourful finishes, including charcoal grey, blue, red, platinum, and gold. Bagno Design’s ZEN (3) meanwhile, goes spiritual, aiming to provide the user with a series of harmonizing states of cleansing and washing under spring water while creatively combining the beauty, simplicity, and imperfect look of natural materials and textures such as stone, copper and bronze. Hidra’s Dial (4) on the other hand, takes precision as its inspiration, being made to the outline reproduction of the classic

ROAD TESTING ... ECO FRAME AND MIRROR
I’m super impressed by Eco Frame and Mirror’s Hamish Noster; not only has he called dead on 9am (our appointment time), but he’s at our office minutes later to collect a large art piece which had been stranded there due to its sheer size. While technically a pick-up is outside of their offerings, Hamish nonetheless arrives to collect the behemoth artwork with the next-level service of a true pro, and takes it back to our house where a huge clock, mirror and two additional pieces of art wait. The additional artworks have been framed by the Eco Frame and Mirror team, who with their stunning selection and en pointe advice (following a series of probing questions regarding art placement, surrounding décor and natural light) have made the process entirely hassle-free. At home, Hamish’s design background comes to the fore as I deliberate whether or not the locations I’ve selected are right – he’s got some insightful advice and takes all the guess work out of the height at which to hang them. What’s more, the quake-proof Art Hang service means I’m easily able to adjust the height of the pieces. frameandmirror.co.nz

he simple act of getting behind the wheel of the handsome, grunty stylings of the Jeep Wrangler Sport and leaving the bustling breakneck speed of Auckland in the rear-view mirror en route to the tropical north is a catharsis in itself. There’s also the comfort in knowing that wherever the adventure takes us – from flawless highway to the wet sands of Hibiscus Coast Highway hotspot Orewa Beach (where we gape in wonder at the sprawling, pine-fringed coastline) and through to off-roading and beyond

Golly Holly!
Image: Tiffany & Co
It might have taken almost 60 years, but Breakfast at Tiffany’s is now a legit experience, following the opening of world famous jewellery chain Tiffany & Co.’s Blue Box Café at its flagship New York store. The 1961 film, starring Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly and wearer of ‘that dress’, both charmed and frustrated in equal measures simply because its title was a big, fat lie (unless you smuggled in a bagel and somehow managed to eat it before security turfed you out). The café, inspired by the movie and designed make you feel like you’re inside one of the iconic, duck-egg blue boxes, sees guests walking past rows of diamonds on the main floor to a concierge-attended elevator to gain entry. You’ll be greeted with a cheery “Welcome to the fabulous fourth floor” when the elevator doors open, but with seating for 40, you’ll have to start queuing from 5am to live out those Golightly dreams. tiffany.com

he call of “bear!” has everyone reaching for their cameras and looking out through the Gold Leaf service double carriage’s seat-to-ceiling dome windows and over the brilliant blue river. Our passing has interrupted a lone grizzly’s gentle lumber through the pristine hillside. Unaware of his instant celebrity status, he obligingly faces the many cameras before resuming his woodland stroll. Excited chatter fills the carriage. In an age where most forms of travel have been reduced to a chore to be endured, rather than a privilege to be enjoyed, luxury train travel harks back to a happier time when the journey was as important as the destination. I’m joining Rocky

Mountaineer’s two day Journey Through The Clouds, a 900-kilometre route from Vancouver to Jasper, and no-one has asked me to take off my shoes or belt, x-rayed my luggage or instructed me to keep my seatbelt fastened. I checked in at Vancouver’s RM station 30 minutes before departure and was waved off by two dozen of the company’s staff, and my luggage magically appeared in my hotel room in Kamloops. This must have been what travel was like in the glamorous ‘golden age’ of the 1920s; something I could certainly get used to! Unlike most other luxury train journeys, the night is spent off the train. Re-boarding the next morning is a breeze. Our coach transfer drops us off on the platform literally at the door to our carriage; our driver jokingly admits he’s sorry he can’t get us closer and that we’ll have to walk the remaining 5 feet. Everyone is well-rested, relaxed and looking forward to more sightings of bear and elk as we set off towards the mountain village of Jasper. There’s no Wi-Fi and almost no mobile phone coverage for most of the journey; it’s striking how much this helps to create a relaxed ambience conducive to socialising
with fellow guests. No one is staring at their phones or tablets; rather they are gazing wide-eyed at the endless parade of stunning scenery and chatting with friends, both old and new. It’s telling that even though badly jetlagged and sleep deprived from our long haul flights from New Zealand, we relax completely into the journey, and I can’t help but think this is because we’d been ‘unplugged’, forced into a digital detox we didn’t perhaps know we needed. Without phone or internet you can really luxuriate into the experience of travel and not feel compelled to report on it while it’s happening, but rather reflect on it sometime after. Having opted for The Gold Leaf service, we’re treated to views over the tree-line that often borders the tracks and get to enjoy breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages in the swanky surrounds of the dedicated dining carriage, where exceptional views and über-professional service join a delectable showcase of perfectly plated, local organic produce featuring delicate fresh salmon (this is Canada, after all) and wines of all grapes from British Colombia. We traverse gentle farmland, ranches, and a semi-arid desert, with the track passing above raging rapids in rainbow-coloured canyons and past precarious bridges; their construction by fur-trading and gold rush pioneers must have been terrifying. Without a doubt, the highlight of this trip through the Rockies is the 230-kilometre Icefields Parkway stretching between Jasper and Lake Louise. The road, also known as Highway 93 North, offers an overload of spectacular sightseeing from pristine turquoise lakes, tumbling waterfalls and ancient glaciers to the famed Columbia Icefields. Along the stretch we spot numerous big horn sheep, deer, black bears and coyotes. Arriving at our destination we are treated to Lake Louise in all its half-frozen glory. The iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel has ‘the view’, of course, and is a magnet for pretty much all tourists to the Rockies; it’s worth popping in for their deservedly famous High Tea, and that view from the restaurant, alone. discovertravel.co.nz

Lux escapes don’t get much more private or extravagant than the seriously swanky Lake Kora, recent recipient of the World Travel Awards’ title “North America’s Leading Exclusive Retreat” for the third year running. Nestled deep in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, the century old ‘Great Camp’, and US sibling of the Banks Peninsula-based Annandale Coastal Farm Escape & Luxury Villa Collection is a fairytale forest villa set among 1,000-acres of private wilderness, with three lakes and exquisite, rustic lux accommodations for up to 22 guests. Open July through October, its rental rates are all-inclusive of staff, meals and activities on the property (though you do have to rent the entire camp!). Lakeside respites include taking out the property’s original wooden canoes, as well as kayaks, fishing and a speedboat for water skiing and tubing. Over at the Playhouse you’ll discover a games room, wood-panelled bar, spa – even an old school two-lane bowling alley that’s as old as the Camp. Every year the tiny city of Ivrea stockpiles 500,000 kilograms of fresh oranges for the epic Battle of the Oranges; often painful and super messy, this food fight for the ages enlists snow-removal equipment in its clean up.

WHAT’S ON
Home is Where the Art is An active painter since the 1950s, Jacqueline Fahey is recognised as amongst the first New Zealand artists to paint from a female perspective, using her art to examine the day-to-day aspects of contemporary women’s existence at the time. She often painted from a trolley in her own household, surrounded by the bustle and activity of her own home, believing that: “Art should come from what an artist knows about life, and if what a woman knows is not what a man knows, then her art is going to have to be different.” This has produced a body of work overflowing with love, loss, conflict and quiet despair, which are all on display in the exhibition Say Something!, on at the Christchurch Art Gallery to March 18. The exhibition revisits Fahey’s most influential body of work, featuring a series of psychologically-charged interiors of the 1970s that bristle with all the intensity of domestic life, successfully challenging the previously accepted archetypes of the female experience and what were ‘appropriate’ subjects for art. christchurchartgallery.org.nz Image: Jacqueline Fahey My Skirt's in Your Fucking Room! 1979. THE LAST WORD
Spirit(ed) Away Cityscape caught up with former local composer John Young, whose specially commissioned piece Spirit opens (with its world premiere) the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s 2018 season and celebrates its 60th anniversary with Eroica.
T
ell us about Spirit. Well the CSO have been very generous and allowed me to write for quite a large orchestra. I was really pleased to accept the commission because, although a lot of my music has been solely in the electroacoustic area, I very much want to explore instrumental writing again with the perspectives I have gained in the studio. How did you approach the composition? I’m interested in exploring what you might think of as the ‘inside’ of sounds. I’m fascinated in the way sounds evolve in time, their textures, richness and the sense of space they can create. For me this means that working with sound is about allowing time for timbre – or the colour of sound – to naturally evolve and find direction, while giving the material enough gestural impetus to maintain a sense of motion. What can we expect? I’m aiming to create an experience of sound that is very immersive, hopefully giving the audience a sense of following a path through the motion of sound textures and colours. There’s no narrative as such, but movement through a shifting soundscape.
Will the CSO have to get in any special equipment to pull this off? The piece includes electroacoustic sounds which formed a start point for the work’s harmonic design. How tough is it composing for a home crowd? Very! What sort of influence has the CSO had on you? A huge influence, really. It was something to aspire to in my mid-teens, but as a member of the orchestra it was amazing to gain insight into the repertoire through international conductors and soloists: I remember concerts with Erich Bergel, Donald Thulean, Vanco Cavdarski and Carl Pini particularly well. The Brahms First we did with Donald Thulean was very special for me. There was a wonderful sense of camaraderie in the orchestra with enjoyable social times. Before that I had a similar kind of experience in the Skellerup Woolston Band. I especially remember Volcano by the great British composer Robert Simpson. Tell us about your work in the acousmatic music field. I am Professor of Composition in the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre at De Montfort University in Leicester. I have

gravitated toward mostly acousmatic music – which is music created solely for projection on loudspeakers. My attraction to it is the potential to draw directly on sounds from the natural world, approaching all sounds as musically viable, and the way we can create an immersive experience for the listener and use technologies to transform sound into new and exciting forms. Other recent pieces have been a 24-channel work for the Vienna Acousmonium (an ‘orchestra’ of 32 loudspeakers surrounding the audience) that was performed there in September, and I have just been at the Bludenz Festival in Austria for the first performance of another piece. What do you miss most about Christchurch? Family of course, but many other things – the space, the wineries ... I haven’t lived there for nearly 30 years, so in a way I see mostly what has changed. The effects of the earthquakes have been really saddening but also unimaginable from a human perspective. But there’s something about the sky, sun, and light that makes me feel relaxed when I visit.
