elcome to our Winter luxury and home issue. The best way to get to know a city is to write about it, and boy, do I have a job ahead of me! I cut my teeth in the publishing world in the hectic, buzzing metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, helming international fashion titles Seventeen and Marie Claire. When the opportunity came to take charge of the top interior design magazine in the country, Home & Décor, I took on that challenge head-on, engaging with the design community and its stakeholders. Through it all, I learned to know and love Kuala Lumpur. In the same way, I hope to bring my love for great content and the hunger and curiosity for this new city of mine, Christchurch, to the job. And it’s been an exciting ride, with the large shoes that our Group Editor Isaac Wilson has left for me to fill. This issue, we have gathered the best of the best in home design for you: the latest home, product and lifestyle trends from Milan Design Fair 2018 (p24), kitchen designer extraordinaire Davinia Sutton on the hottest ways to spruce up your kitchen this year (p30), awardwinning CoLab Architecture’s Blair Paterson and Tobin Smith on the new definition of luxury (p34), Canopy

Best in show Cityscape hits the style-making extravaganza that is Milan Design Week (AKA Salone del Mobile Milano) to scope out what's hot, and about to be, in the home. RECYCLED MATERIALS Good design is sustainable design – and thanks to this year’s manifesto urging designers and brands to aim for sustainable quality, 2018 saw a flurry of innovative products made with recycled plastic and fabric. Some of the finer examples include Japanese designer Kodai Iwamoto who produced a range of fine plastic vases with his unique technique of plastic blowing. Dutch brand TRASHPLAST presented their new material made from recycled polyethylene plastic and Danish brand Kvadrat produced the Solid Textile Board (STB), a flexible, hard and reusable product made from fabric offcuts and invited seven architects and designers (including Jo Nagasaka, Raw-Edges and Jonathan Olivares) to create products with STB.

LOOK EAST The rock stars of this year’s MDW was the legion of Japanese designer colabs with renowned and regarded brands. Arper partnered with Ichiro Iwasaki, while the Danish design company Fritz Hansen produced the first totally wooden chair designed by nendo named N01, since Arne Jacobsen created his Grand Prix model in 1957. The highlight of Japanese design is seen at the Zona Tortona’s Superstudio installation, curated by Oki Sato from

nendo. It features 10 concepts on the idea of movement, derived from the function of objects, materials or production processes, from the collective creative minds of major Japanese manufacturers. A separate exhibition on nendo’s creative process offers insight into the journey from first brief to final product.

RETRO COOL Now more than ever, retro is being recognised as a timeless style that continues to make a mark on modern trends. Casper Vissers (former Moooi co-founder) launched his new design brand Revised, showcasing styles from the early 20th Century, and London brand Sé is set to “reclaim the glamour and quality of 20th Century furniture". If 1970s disco is your thing, the range of carpets and furniture from Gufram will have you coveting every piece. With all things retro traceable to Scandinavian roots, Warm Nordic and its sleek and stylistic designs that were vogue in the 1950s and 1960s are given a deserving second chance.

25

TECH TALK In 2018, tech has had an impact on design and style trends like never before. Tech brands who made their presence felt at MDW included Google and trend forecaster Li Edelkoort who put on an exhibition about electronic devices becoming increasingly more tactile. Panasonic launched a show to explore how integral electronic products are in promoting wellbeing. Dassault Systèmes’ installation, meanwhile, explored how the built environment (cities, towns, homes and offices) can actually help prevent air pollution, together with Kengo Kuma, Superflux and Studio Roosegaarde.

BOLD COLOURS It’s time to bring out the energising colours of red, yellow, oranges, rich blues and violets, with brands like Seletti and Missoni Home going all out on these vibrant hues. Vitra is right out there too with their iconic Panton chair in bright orange. This season, go bold or go home!

the mod makeover

While many trends have a sell-by date, the clean lines and bright pops of colour of mid-century mod never go out of style. No one knows this better than mr mod's mid-century guru Ross Morrison, who sat down with Cityscape to give us the inside word on picking the perfect piece, working with family and why good design will always reign supreme.

How long have you guys been about? We’ve been dealing in mid-century furniture for about 24 years. What started it? I just think I’m very passionate about this business and bringing things back to life, rejuvenating things. I had an interest in mid-century 60s architecture. I grew up in that period and had an interest in furniture as well. My background is in antiques restoration and I’m a woodcarver by trade, and worked with my father for 10 years before going overseas to sell Japanese antiques in London and France. I moved into French antiques and then mid-century at a time when no one wanted it or was doing it. In New Zealand, I’ve been the longest player in mid-century furniture and design. You’re a family business, what’s the best thing about working with family? It’s easy. We have an understanding of each other. My father was an antiques dealer so it’s the 3rd generation now with Nico (Morrison-West) joining the business. My brother and his son do all of our restoration work. What’s the attraction of mid-century design? The design! Nothing’s comparable to that today. It was really good design and good manufacturing as well as the use of good materials. There’s longevity and

27

timelessness. It’s recycling – obviously we’re recycling on a grander sort of scale. Most pieces have a future and we enjoy bringing things back to life. What was in the water in Scandinavia during that era, do you think? It was all post World War II. For the Scandinavians, it was easy for them to set up because they weren’t bombed and they were able to get into manufacturing straightaway. And Europe was devastated. So there were a lot of people who needed furniture right away. That helped boost the Scandinavian manufacturing base at the time. It was born out of necessity more than anything else. On the other side of the world, it was a very prosperous time for the Americans, and they wanted to soak up that European styling and modern simplicity. With the

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

housing boom and modern technologies that came out of the war in architecture and in the manufacturing of whiteware, there was a lot about making things more simple. Mid-century design had a simplicity to it, so that’s where it all started. How do you source pieces? You’ve got to keep reinventing how you buy because there are always other people looking as well. We’ve been doing it a long time and have our sources. We always strive to find new people to deal with as well, as tastes and styles change within the barriers of that mid-century style. Between Nico and I, we have a certain aesthetic, an eye for things that are not necessarily by a famous designer but have the look. I travel once a year to Italy and America and will usually take a month on each sourcing trip. We don’t source much locally because in the late 1950s, there were huge duties for stuff coming into New Zealand. This created a lot of local manufacturers that started producing lookalike and inspired pieces. We source for the original designer pieces. Antique markets used to be good, but now because everyone goes, you’ve got to find the source really. Gone are the days when you could jump off a plane and fill a container. Now it’s a process which can take up to 6 months. It’s getting harder, but because I know and have really good relationships with people overseas or dealers, they hold things and send me photos. When we go overseas, it’s a matter of finding other pieces to complement what we’ve already got.

28

What are the three golden rules for selecting a mid-century piece for buyers? Firstly, I always say buy what you like and everything else would fit together. Pedigree matters to a certain extent but it comes down to you’ve got to like it to start with. Secondly, buy from someone who’s knowledgeable. There’s a lot of stuff out there and we specialise in restoration. It’s about returning things to their original or keeping the patina as it has been for 50 to 60 years. Thirdly, it’s really important to look at the material and how the pieces are made. And I think the rest will follow. For example, if you wanted to do your house in mid-century furniture, I would never suggest that you go with one particular wood. A lot of people would say I want to furnish my house in teak, and I would say within three years, you’d be coming back and saying "I wish I'd never done that". I try and encourage people to think outside the square and look at other materials – a mixture of woods, and styles that work together. It’s a time when you can mix something with contemporary, antique and mid-century styles. A lot of people refer to our website first before they come to us, so they have an idea of what they want. Social media has changed the way we do business. More and more people are looking at Facebook, Instagram, and website combo, and then they’ll come here and make a decision a lot quicker. We’re active on those platforms and we do sell stuff straight off Instagram and Facebook.

THE MOD MAKEOVER

Early 1960s teak ice bucket by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Denmark (RRP $450)

What’s the one piece you can’t part with? It changes. I used to hang on to things, but not anymore. I suppose I like paintings and sculpture more than I used to. Sculptures can be hard to find, and very expensive, but it’s all part of the thrill of the chase when finding things. How often do you find something authentic and think 'this is beyond restoration' – but you do it anyway? Well, we have a warehouse full of pieces like that! But it’s never beyond. There’s always hope. Unless something’s really badly water damaged or smashed, usually there’s hope. Most things can be done. We have a really good network of people here in Christchurch that are able to assist in restoring – upholstery, metalwork, glass, rewiring lights and all that. Whereas I’ve got friends overseas that find it really difficult to do certain things or it’s really expensive. I’m teaching Nico to do restorations. It’s becoming a lost art. This is the big problem with finding tradespeople in the future. What’s the longest you’ve spent on a piece? Some pieces have taken years. You put them away and start again. I just finished a chair recently and I think the restoration span on that was six years. Some things can be complicated, and you come back with an idea of how to do it, how to fix it. There’s a real problem solving aspect to it. There are certain things where there are procedures but there’s other things that are unique and you’re just flying off the cuff. What’s your work process like? For me, I like doing work after three in the afternoon and concentrate for two hours. Or in the morning. What inspires me in the

29

restoration process is if it’s worth bringing back to life. And the process is not just stripping or sanding the wood, there are always other things. Because some of it is 50, 60 or 70 years old, there might be something missing, like a handle or hinge. So you have to get someone to make the handle. I quite like that process. It involves a lot of driving around and takes a long period of time. A couple of pieces that I have now, I‘m waiting to get the pieces made. I’ll say 'yes, I’m going to do that now', but it might have taken three years to get to that point. A lot of pieces in the factory are still works in progress. Where in the world have mr mod pieces ended up? London, America, Australia. More and more people are buying from Australia. There’s definitely interest from Asia. Australia is our biggest overseas market and I think that will grow as a lot of the shops that have been around for 10 to 15 years are closing because of the high rental of the shops compared to Christchurch. But we’ve also really realised that you can’t just have the shop. You’ve got to have the website. We realised that a long time ago that if we don’t do that we’d be behind times. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Reach for the sky. Go for it. Follow your dreams. What’s the crown jewel in the showroom? We have a pair of Gio Ponti chairs that are being restored. What’s next for mr mod? I’ve been asked to do a mid-century design exhibition at CoCA. It’s on from August 25 to November 4. So we’re excited about that. mrmod.co.nz

TURN UP THE HEAT

31

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

T

his year’s hottest kitchen designs are all about timber veneers, colour contrast, texture, metallics and the ongoing industrial look. Personalisation is key, however! The end of 2017 saw the emergence of more bold colours and textures. The mix of striking solid colours and woodgrains continues to prove popular. Expect to see more industrial finishes like concrete sitting alongside these. BOLD, VIBRANT COLOUR SCHEMES Vibrant ‘pop’ colour schemes, pretty pastels and hues of blue are making a comeback and will continue to be popular. Use of colour is extremely important and should reflect the homeowners' personalities. For those keen to create some individuality, yet not quite brave enough for the dramatic contrast of bold colours, then pastels are ideal partners for grey palettes and wood effect finishes – pastels in blue, yellow, pink and green can create a real 'wow' factor. Golds have been on trend for a while, but the move to combine them with browns and organic materials is growing and creates a warm environment.

THE RISE OF THE SMART KITCHEN (ALL AT THE PUSH OF A BUTTON!) People are engaging in much busier lifestyles. This often means cooking multiple dishes at once simultaneously – particularly for keen entertainers. To keep pace, smart appliances are developing rapidly, with WIFI ready appliances allowing us to control our kitchens from afar, and steam ovens and vacuum drawers making cooking quicker, easier and letting you really retain the flavour in your food.

HARDWORKING ISLANDS Layouts are usually dictated by the space, but kitchen islands continue to dominate, with larger kitchens sometimes even having two islands! Most will have breakfast bar or banquet seating attached to incorporate dining. SHELVING IS MAKING A STATEMENT Open shelving is becoming increasingly popular and allows homeowners to add their own touch with accessories and deluxe food. SHAKER STYLE RETAINS POPULARITY The shaker door is still a popular choice, offering distinctive yet practical styling. Many homeowners opt for a traditional design with uni-colour matte finishes. HANDLES ARE BACK Handle-less doors proved popular not long ago, but look out – kitchen handles are coming back. Think beautiful, ornate handles against modern cupboards and bright coppers/rose golds on shaker-style kitchens. CONCEALED LIGHTING Layered lighting is key. Pendants still work really well, and are ideally complemented with LED strips on the underside of eye level cupboards to illuminate work surfaces and carefully positioned recessed down lights. Lighting under cabinetry and counters is an easy way to bring atmosphere to the room.

32

BRASS AND MIXED METALS Brass remains a hot trend, expect to see it being paired with warm colourways and used on statement features. Mixed metals also continue to be a key trend, and mixing with metal appliances works well too. There’s also a shift towards treating metals to create interesting patinas and dramatic, unique finishes for that crucial personal touch. HEAVY METAL AND CONCRETE EFFECTS Look out for industrial-style features such as concrete effect finishes, black grip ledge handles, open-style metal frame racks for storage and eye-catching features for kitchens with purpose.

TURN UP THE HEAT

"... timber veneers, colour contrast, texture, metallics and the ongoing industrial look. Personalisation is key!"

NATURAL TIMBERS AND VENEERS Expect to see an increase in the use of engineered veneers as we become more mindful of our resources. These add texture and intrigue, and can be used for everything from statement wall veneers to unique cabinetry and shelving.

durable surface material available. Look out for bench top profiles thinned down to create a sharp, clean-lined look, and thin or layered edge profiles with engineered products such as Dekton and Neolith or Corian. This product is also making inroads on cladding joinery door and drawer fronts.

FAUX MARBLE AND STONE WORKTOPS The latest material we've seen a surge in for kitchen worktops is Neolith – a well thoughtout range of finishes (silk, satin, river washed and polished) to suit the modern worktop requirement that’s also very practical. Using 100% natural materials, extreme heat, and intense pressure, it results in the most

LAST WORD Careful use of texture with layered forms or a mix of bold materials – like raw steel, veneer and a soft matte finish of lacquered paint – used alongside creative, subtle lighting will emphasise the form and overall look of the space, creating an original kitchen with a furniture look.

When it comes to defining luxury in architecture, the way space is used is crucial to not only the aesthetic, but also the functionality of a design.

THE LUXURY OF SPACE

Cityscape delves into what quality of space means in architecture – and how it’s changing – with CoLab Architecture's award-winning architects Blair Paterson and Tobin Smith.

M

ore and more, we’re seeing large scale, palatial builds giving way to modern and purposeful design. It’s the play of practicality over indulgence, materiality over ostentatious space, context over size. We’ve seen many projects being acknowledged for just these factors – for example a small courtyard house in Auckland crowned ‘house of the year’, and a high-end accommodation development on the Banks Peninsula picking up a ‘small project’ architecture award. These projects are creating conversations about the definition of the Kiwi dream. We believe that it is possible to execute luxury in domestic architecture in various ways. Thoughtful designs take into account space planning, the surrounding landscape,

36

detail and material. The most important aspect would be how the space would serve the home dwellers’ needs and wants, thus creating a sanctuary for them. Our projects adopt these principles. We strive to fulfill the brief of strong contemporary architecture, designed with their street context in mind and always injecting luxury on a modest scale. One of these projects is a series of three townhouses located in an architecturally important area of the city on the northwestern corner of Dublin and Dorset Streets. The area’s rich grain of townhouse typologies inspired the low pitch gable roofs that turn to address their primary street boundaries, and with the site's proximity to the wooded acres of Hagley Park, the use of timber as an exterior cladding is an obvious choice.

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

THE LUXURY OF SPACE

Internally the spaces are arranged over two levels, living on the lower and sleeping on the upper. Ground floor spaces connect to multiple outdoor courtyards surrounding each house, allowing occupants the opportunity to follow sunlight throughout the day or escape prevailing winds. The design was a direct response to a specific setting – the inner city, urban space. We focused on things that are important to the site, for example, the large double height void over the living area which allows us to capture the last of the afternoon sunlight, while creating internal interaction between the two levels. Cedar screens are deployed over high level glazing to diffuse direct sunlight. The void also allows the occupants to overlook the green canopies of the Hagley Park trees beyond. It’s about visually

37

creating space beyond the boundaries of the dwelling. The Dublin Street townhouses could be considered a modest project but we created a sense of luxury within through the use of volume that other houses can’t afford. There is also a sense of richness throughout, expressed in the materials used on the joinery elements, especially in the living room, that raises up in the void to visually connect the two levels. Expressed lintels and internal glazing subtly reference the notable ‘Christchurch Style’ that is also present in the area, in the ‘stripped back’, non-literal interpretation. colabarch.co.nz

FEAST REVIEW

STRAWBERRY FARE

I

t’s the epitome of showstopping gastronomy – all eyes track the majesty of the Tropical Coconut Freeze as Strawberry Fare’s Chiara Todesco expertly ferries it to our table. The latest addition to Liz Barry’s iconic city restaurant and its famed dessert menu is a genius take on the classic fruit salad and ice-cream combo. Brightly coloured fruit pieces fill the hollow of the impressively realistic coconut, which is actually a chocolate and toasted coconut shell complete with coconut sorbet flesh. Neighbouring tables look on as we deliberate on how best to approach the edible art at our table before we finally dig our spoons into the coconut sorbet and into the crisp shell exterior, which gives way with a satisfying ‘crack’. Supremely refreshing, the sorbet is a cool and creamy coconut infusion and pairs brilliantly with the chocolatey richness and roasted nuttiness of the shell, while the toasted coconut adds a textural surprise. An immediate favourite, it’s joined by another long-running fave, the Caramel & Hazelnut Torte, which melds roasted hazelnuts with some seriously next-level caramel atop a beautifully short and buttery crust

and both find their match in a honeyed Pegasus Bay Finale. A beacon on the city’s dining scene, Strawberry Fare has been wowing taste buds for more than 30 years. This explains the full-house Tuesday night hum of delighted diners making their way through the revered courses amid the restaurant’s polished, Scandi-cool aesthetic. Seated by the window, we drink in views across Hagley Park as we sip on the charms of a racy Pegasus Bay Riesling and a punchy espresso martini (made with house-roasted New City Coffee) while perusing the menu. It’s succinct, but packed with winners – we enlist the professional prowess of Chiara who offers bang-on suggestions after asking us a few questions. We start with the Baked French Baguette (a crusty revelation that’s nicely chewy and comes with an addictive confit garlic butter) and Prawns Gremolata, which sees plump grilled prawns piqued with an exquisite trifecta of lemon, parsley and garlic, the smokiness of the prawns enlivened with a zesty aioli. The seafood symphony continues into mains with the Pan Fried Daily Fish (paired with a spicy Peregrine

39

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

Pinot Gris), which sees a slab of moist, delicate grouper crowning a harmonious vibrant herb and lemon mash alongside slow-roasted cherry tomatoes, nutty roasted garlic aioli, and fresh and feisty salsa verde. It’s joined on the table by a buttery, melt-in-the-mouth Beef Fillet that’s without a doubt one of the finest-treated pieces of beef you’re likely to encounter. Lightly caramelised, it makes for an exceptional beefy hit that’s brilliant between sips of the mocha stylings of the Main Divide Pinot Noir, and is backed up by a velvety truffled mash, crisp green beans and a tangy, teasing jus. We’re just saying how full we are when we spot our desserts and stop mid-sentence, watching in delighted anticipation as they make their way over. 15 Bealey Avenue, 03 365 4897, strawberryfare.com

menu since the opening. The Beef En Croute is something quite different that you won’t find anywhere else. That’s what I’d order.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION

Cityscape caught up with St Germain’s Frederic Berhault on offering the city an authentic French dining experience. How did St Germain come to be? I arrived in Christchurch 15 years ago. There were a few French restaurants back then, but they closed very quickly. When my brothers came to stay here as well, the decision was easy. We wanted to offer an authentic French experience to Christchurch. What’s it like working with your brothers? Working with family is never easy. We’re all very passionate. But the important thing is we all had the same direction and vision for the restaurant. So that helps absolutely. We may have arguments over small details, but we always agree on where we’re going at the end of the day. Presently I’m the only one working here. Vincent stopped due to health reasons and my youngest brother is taking time off to travel.

What’s the secret to your success? The authenticity. We have French food, wines, music and all the staff on the floor is French. The customers love it – they’re always asking so many questions about France. It’s the whole experience. I think lots of places are missing that. We try to give the complete package. What can we expect? A lot of people think that French food is very rich and that it’s too posh. We’re probably on the high end of the scale, but we try not to be pretentious. We’re here to help. We don’t pretend to be a Michelin star restaurant, so people shouldn’t be scared. It’s just good food, good service and good wine. What should we order? The duck breast is very popular. We have a few items that have been in the

44

CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

What do you love about your job? I’ve been doing that for almost 30 years now. A lot of my family are in hospitality. We have pastry chefs and some of them used to run businesses as boulangeries and patisseries in France. I grew up in this environment. I love people, I love food. I love wine too, probably too much. What’s your go-to dish at home? We do cook a little bit of everything. I tend to cook a little bit more French and my kids love duck with an orange sauce. We try to introduce the kids to different food and culture. We like Asian and South American food. What do you think Christchurch needs more of? I think it needs more restaurants that are unique and authentic. They need to focus on what they know and do well, and not try to please everyone. That’s one of the questions we asked ourselves when we opened 10 years ago: “Are we trying to please people and get New Zealand wine and a few French wines?” No! Now, we have 100 wines on the list, and about 95 are French. That’s probably why we’re still doing well, we give people something very authentic. saint-germain.co.nz

aving conquered the South Canterbury hospitality landscape, with an impressive portfolio of a cocktail bar, two food trucks, one English fish and chip shop, six restaurants, and newcomer Miro in the iconic Midland Building in the city, Francesca Voza is still brimming with ideas. Imbued in her family’s business since she was young, (they had restaurants in the southern Italian town of Paestum and in the North England shire of Sunderland) Francesca attributes her success to sheer hard work. “We all just work extremely hard to create this vision. I’m a big fan of procedures and have extremely high standards which all of our team maintain. I couldn’t do any of this without the amazing team that works with us or my loving husband James who supports me one hundred percent, even when my ideas get a little crazy!” she says. As for what the future holds, she sees eating out for the next generation to have more of a focus on sustainability and ethical fare; whether that comes from a vegan based diet or just sourcing produce locally and ethically. She’s also got a cookbook coming out, which she co-wrote with her Francesca’s Italian Kitchen business partner James Stapley. The concept behind the cookbook is cooking simply with delicious ingredients, inspired by their trip around Italy last year. It also reflects her love for travel and food. “If I weren’t busy running restaurants, to be able to combine my two biggest passions would be amazing!” she says. One day, she would love to have a restaurant in the south of Italy, where the produce is “fresh and amazing, and everything is so cheap and of such high quality!” We’re excited to see what else Francesca is brewing in the kitchen for Cantabrians (pun intended)!

The Big Chill

Cityscape gets the inside word on looking as frosty as the winter temperatures with Ballantyne’s fashion stylist extraordinaire Josie Pasane.

It’s time to up our outerwear game and get serious about the new season. There are plenty of options ready to instantly transform you into a style star, with a selection of trenches, cosy cocoons, and smart long duster coats in woollen blends. Warmth is your primary mission, and the winter coat will be your most worthwhile investment as it’s one of the hardest working pieces in your wardrobe. My top tip: Keep the cold out and turn the style up in classic or sharply tailored coats. Add a touch of glamour to your everyday look with Fall/Winter 18’s most opulent coat, the furry topper. This season’s burnt yellow hues and candycoloured faux fur coats will surely steal the spotlight. While a fine cashmere sweater will do the work of a double-knit chunky style, add one of the must-have accessories during winter days, a fedora hat, to add a snap to a casual look, as well as dress up your classic outfits. Whether you choose to be spotted in a pair of fabulous heeled boots or with a lux leather bag, we say wrap up in style when the temperature drops! ballantynes.co.nz

FASHION & WELLBEING DR LIBBY

THE GOOD LIFE Cityscape gets the inside word from nutritional biochemist and all-round lifestyle guru Dr Libby on why variety is more than the spice of life when it comes to diet.

W

ith the changing seasons, nature offers us not only a change in temperature, but also new foods to enjoy. Yet, so many of us now have access to the same fruits and vegetables year-round, with supermarkets stocking both local and imported produce. While there is certainly nothing wrong with enjoying our favourite fruits and vegetables, if we eat the same foods over and over again, we may not be getting the dietary variety we need for optimal health. Variety in what we eat is such an important concept, as it helps to

ensure we get a good spread of vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals (beneficial plant chemicals). If you’re eating the same three vegetables over and over again, you might be missing out on the wonderful nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals in other types of veggies, not to mention their different flavours. Eating seasonally can help to introduce more variety, as it means you’ll be eating different fruits and vegetables across the year. Eating seasonally can also be incredibly nourishing. Think about the types of foods that you really

“... if we eat the same foods over and over again, we may not be getting the dietary variety we need for optimal health.”

feel like during winter – for most people, this isn’t a cold salad! Instead, soups, stews and casseroles – utilising in-season vegetables – tend to be more nourishing. If this is true for you, I can’t encourage you enough to listen to your body. Here are some great winter vegetables to try: Leeks Leeks are rich in prebiotics, a type of fibre that feeds your gut bacteria, helping to keep them alive. They’re also a good source of vitamin K, which is important for normal blood clotting. Try including them in your soups. Brussels sprouts Part of the Brassica family of vegetables, brussels sprouts contain beneficial phytochemicals as well as a good dose of dietary fibre. If you decided long ago that you didn’t like brussels sprouts, it might be time to give them another try. Roasting them with herbs and spices is a great way to enjoy them. Kumara A great source of energy, this delicious vegetable is packed full of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that can be converted into vitamin A in the body and great added to stews, mashed, or baked with the skin on. Broccoli Broccoli contains a compound that can be converted in the body into sulforaphane. This superstar substance has anti-cancer properties and stimulates phase two liver detoxification pathways. Try it lightly steamed or stir-fried, rather than boiled. drlibby.com

HOT PROPERTY SELLING YOUR HOME IN WINTER – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Y

ou’ll often hear that winter is a bad time to try and sell your house, but it’s much better to think of it as a significant opportunity! There’s typically less competition in the market over the winter, so your chances of selling for a premium price are higher. Potential buyers in winter are also motivated; they’re typically looking in winter because they need to move, and are not “just looking” or filling in a weekend. There’s also less landscaping to have to do in the garden, which is a real effort-saver. So don’t be afraid to take the plunge! There are a number of things you can do to ensure you’re showing your home at its winter best. First, let in the light – pull up blinds, open curtains, and turn on every light in the house. You don’t want things looking at all gloomy! It’s worth

even bringing in stylish lamps and upping the wattage of bulbs to brighten up any darker areas. Secondly, you’ll want to crank up the heat. Nothing will kill your potential sale faster than a cold house! If you have a fire, you’ll definitely want to get it roaring; otherwise get the heat pump, heaters or thermostat going well in advance of your open home hours so things are nice and toasty when people arrive. A warm house also encourages your viewers to linger. Think cosy and snug: deploy throws in natural fibres, warm colours, cushions, and soft music – anything that helps your viewers to imagine nesting in the space. Similarly, on a cold day, going the

There are a number of things you can do to ensure you’re showing your home at its winter best. extra mile to offer viewers hot drinks or even soup can really help to create that at-home feeling (but make sure you have a strategy in place for quickly tidying up – paper cups that can go straight into the recycling bin are a good option). Placing photos or even an album that show the house and garden at their best in the summer months assist your viewers in completing a mental picture of life at the property. Making some quick and easy spruce-ups that won’t take a lot of money or effort before your showing can also reap dividends; consider repainting your porch and front door for added curb appeal, replacing worn or broken kitchen knobs and handles, and upgrading your entryway lighting fixtures for a bright, stylish welcome. And be sure to enact a strict ‘shoes off at the door’ policy for everyone arriving both before and during your open days as well – you don’t want mud tracked through your immaculately clean carpets! maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

UP YOUR GREENERY

Cityscape taps the brains trust of Canopy Landscape Architects’ Paul Roper-Gee and Gabe Ross on the rising trend of green roofs and walls.

A

s our urban population density grows and we see smaller section sizes and more apartment living, it is becoming more important to maximise the potential of every element in our smaller outdoor living spaces. Green roofs and walls are a landscape design approach that adds a touch of luxury while also providing multiple visual, practical and ecological benefits. Using green roofs and walls, architecture can be blended in with a surrounding natural setting by cloaking the buildings in vegetation, or make an impressive green visual statement as a contrast to the hard construction materials that often dominate our urban environments. The practical benefits of well-designed green wall and roof systems include helping to regulate air temperature, which can reduce energy costs. The vegetation reduces the impact of ultra-violet light on cladding and roof materials, thus extending their life. They can also increase insulation values with resulting energy savings for buildings, capture rainwater to reduce stormwater runoff and trap airborne pollutants. More and more research points to the health and wellness benefits of being connected to nature – green walls can flow from outside into your house, bringing the natural world inside where they can enhance emotional well-being. By vegetating roofs and walls, you bring them to life by providing habitat for birds, butterflies and other beneficial insects, enhancing biodiversity. There is a wide range of suitable plant selections for walls and roofs, determined by the aspect, available water and specific microclimate for each site. Options include New Zealand native grasses, ferns and groundcovers. Edible approaches using herbs and salad vegetables are also possible to maximise the productive value of your garden. At Canopy, we have noticed an increasing interest in vegetated ‘living’ approaches to walls and roofs, in both commercial and residential settings. With technologies now increasingly available and more economical, this is the time to give it a go for your own outdoor living space.

RAISE THE (HOME) BAR

Cameo 1400 PRO Hazer

Cityscape gets some pro tips from Harvey Norman Commercial’s resident bar tsar Craig Shaw on nailing the perfect home bar.

I

n our life before the ground shook, my wife and I would meet our friends at the hottest new lounge for a night of cocktails and conversation. Even though our hospitality landscape is changing every day, Fridays are typically spent at someone’s home, at dinner parties or drinks. These new house party events, of course, are made better with the right supplies in both spirituous drink and electrical additions.

Rule #2: Buy what you like to drink I always tell people to stock their bar with the spirits they love. If you like drinking rum or gin, for example, have several different types on hand. Ultimately, it’s your bar, and there’s no need to have vodka in there if you’re never going to drink it! As long as you’re using the right techniques and ingredients, you will be able to make great cocktails for you and your guests.

Rule #1: Buy a good cocktail book Behind any good bar is a good book on how to mix cocktails. I would highly advise buying a how-to guide to help you get a solid understanding of spirits, mixers, and general cocktail foundations, like The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks by Dale DeGroff, who is widely regarded as the world’s foremost mixologist.

Rule #3: Add the items that create atmosphere These items come in all types of forms to suit all budgets. Ice machines are great if you are building a new house or bar, or you can simply fit one in. Disco lighting adds atmosphere and can be subtle, outrageous or both. Sound is so important and often so undervalued in the venues that we frequent – arguably, sound could be the number one reason

that we stay somewhere as long as we do. No party room is complete without decent sound and some atmospheric lighting. INTO THE BLUE p98 DESTINATION LUXURY p104

It was August 1947, and India and Pakistan had just won independence from the British following a nationalist struggle that lasted nearly three decades. Post-colonial India was brimming with promise. Her first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru roped in Swiss modernist architect Le Corbusier to help with city planning that would defy the past – the legacy of which can still be seen today in the city of Chandigarh, which has become the poster child of town planning and design for architecture devotees the world over.

INTO THE BLUE Cityscape sets its course for adventure onboard Windstar Cruises' Wind Spirit sailing the world-famous cobalt and turquoise waters of Tahiti on a peerless lux escape with Discover Travel.

D

orsal fins slice through the water as harmless blacktip reef sharks lazily circle. Below the surface, schools of brightly coloured fish explode in underwater firework displays as the sharks approach, while umbrella-sized shadows of stingrays glide by. Our Snorkel Safari and Stingray Encounter guides have coaxed us into Bora Bora lagoon's crystalline water with the knowledge stingrays don't have teeth as we're greeted by the enthusiastic, neon-lit cast from Finding Nemo jostling around us. With their stealth moves and aloof cool, the sharks prowl the water, cutting in close, though always just beyond reach and always watching. The stingrays, by comparison, are like playful puppies, brushing past with their smooth, powerful wings and trailing long, scratchy tails concealing deadly barbs during a thrilling close encounter. The fourth stop on our boutique cruise, Bora Bora is the dictionary definition of a tropical paradise. Turquoise waters lazily lap pristine white sands studded with nodding palms while stilted thatch-roofed overwater bungalows dot the prime real estate like strings of black pearls. The three million-year-old extinct volcano Mount Otemanu, and its many 'faces', provides a breathtaking jagged backdrop and stunning centrepiece. The jewel in French Polynesia's crown, Tahiti's stunning array of 118 islands are scattered over 2,000 kilometres in the

sparkling South Pacific. Over the next week, we'll get to visit and explore six, from the supreme comfort and luxurious surrounds of Windstar Cruises' four-masted sailing yacht Wind Spirit – the epitome in small ship sailing. Taking out Condé Naste Traveler's coveted title of World's Best Small Ship Cruiseline, Windstar is renowned for their high crew-toguest ratios and Wind Spirit is no exception, carrying just 148 passengers in the refined elegance of 74 cabins, with almost one crew member for every passenger on board. While this ensures attentive service, our familiarity with the super friendly and professional crew makes it feel like they are fellow passengers, though ones that can remember our names after the first day and go out of their way to make sure we have the best possible time on board. This includes remembering dietary requests and anticipating them, while an 'Open Bridge Policy' allows us to catch up with senior crew and find out more about our journey on board, and about this magnificent vessel. Our Ocean View cabin effortlessly impresses with Egyptian cotton sheets on our queen bed, daily deliveries of fresh fruit and flowers, granite bathroom featuring exquisite L’Occitane products (and a shower with a massage head on the days we're too tired to make it to the spa), supremely fluffy bathrobes and slippers and a much

under-utilised flat-screen TV give the feeling of a five-star hotel. When it comes to dining, we're spoiled for choice. During breakfast and lunch, we're faced with the dilemma of choosing from the bountiful buffet-style setup profiling fresh and enticing cuisine, or deliberating over which indulgent treat to enjoy from the a la carte menu. Dine indoors or out on the teak decks of Veranda, where each morning we're treated to the jawdropping vistas of the staggered mountains greeting us at each new port. Dinner at AmphorA Restaurant, where contemporary design meets decadent, skilfully created fine dining, is no less spectacular. A quick favourite becomes the local fish Mahi Mahi, a deliciously flavoursome, meaty fish which is simply irresistible. Al fresco dining is also an option in the evenings at Candles, where considerate crew offer us heated shawls when the tropical breeze picks up. And should we not feel like mingling, it's good to know that 24-hour room service is waiting in the wings. We make fast friends with our fellow travellers who span the globe from New Zealand to Canada, USA and Australia, Brazil and Argentina, and all are in love (or rapidly growing to love!) small-ship cruising, appreciating the relaxed, casual, and serene ambience on board, and the ability to explore destinations which a bigger vessel is unable to reach. Our itinerary is aptly named 'Dreams of Tahiti', and over a period of seven nights, we drink in deeply the beauty of the islands. Shore excursions allow us to explore Tahiti's rich culture, landscapes, scenery and marine life, and in addition to the Snorkel Safari and Stingray Encounter, we also sign up to kayak the Faaroa River in Raiatea. It’s the second-largest of the Society Islands, likely origin point of the great Polynesian migrations to Hawai'i and Aotearoa, and our first stop. With its claim to fame being the only navigable river in the Tahitian Islands, we're not missing our chance to explore the Faaroa River – even when it starts raining just before we hop in our kayak. The rain doesn't stop until after we disembark, while slightly disappointing, it allows an insight into another side of Tahiti, creating a seemingly ethereal atmosphere of faint mist shrouding the rainforest in mystery. Kayak manoeuvring not being our forte, we find ourselves tangled up in the reeds on more than one occasion and in peels of laughter

100

at the challenge of ‘reversing’, but certainly never in any danger, despite our guide’s warning to be on the lookout for falling coconuts! Our next stop is the lush idyllic island of Mo’orea, and given the truly stunning scenery packed into its 134-square kilometres (which explains its wild popularity as a honeymoon destination), it’s little wonder a Photographer’s Eye View of Mo’orea Excursion is on offer. One of the passengers, an avid photographer herself, is very impressed with the level of professionalism and knowledge she gains on this excursion, run by a local Tahitian of French descent. We choose, instead, to take a drive around the island with other passengers; Albert, our trusted driver and guide, provides a fascinating commentary about Mo’orea's thousand-year Polynesian and European history, and showcases the endless visual highlights of what the founder of Frommer’s travel guide called “the most beautiful island in the world”. The island of Taha’a, our next anchorage, makes for an extraordinary experience. We take tenders out to a private island for the day, bringing along enough supplies to cater for the 100odd passengers on board, a veritable portable beach BBQ/party complete with live musical entertainment. The island is set up with options for beach volley ball or kayaking if preferred. After a sumptuous BBQ lunch, we spend the afternoon snorkelling just five metres from the shoreline in an abundantly rich coral wonderland where we spot at least 27 different varieties of fish. In a cruise full of amazing experiences, this one is our favourite – so many amazing sights to see in the crystal-clear water, and all within metres of my deck-chair. Arriving in Bora Bora is no less an eyewidening experience as we take in the magnificent display of Mother Nature. The day after our stingray adventure, CITYSCAPE.CO.NZ Winter 18

Post-swim relaxation takes the form of our favourite Mahi Mahi (in a burger no less!) washed down by a local beer at the famous Bloody Mary’s, a time-honoured establishment where sand adorns the floor (of course!) and where numerous celebrities have wined and dined. For about NZ$30, we enjoy an afternoon of fun in the sun on an island so often deemed out of reach for the average traveller. Our final stop is the island of Huahine. Nicknamed the 'Garden of Eden', Huahine's lush forests, tropical vegetation and quaint villages which dot the island offer an insight into an authentic South Pacific lifestyle. Here the free shuttle (Le Truck) pops us into the main village to explore and then enjoy a dip

at the small, but beautiful, local beach. A couple of Hinano beers later, with a bit of sun on our backs, all the worries of the world seem a million miles away. Back on board Wind Spirit, in the late afternoon heat, a quick dip in the ocean from the Water Sports Platform at the rear of the ship cools me down, and a soak in the hot tub eases a few more worries away. The days seem to have flown by, and yet they’ve left an indelible impression; this is a must-do for anyone interested in discovering a vastly different way to relax on holiday and experiencing, if only for a while, what it might be like to have one’s own private yacht. Not surprisingly, thoughts turn to staging our own mutiny. discovertravel.co.nz

TAHITI PEARL BEACH RESORT Passengers travelling on the Wind Spirit will stay one night each preand post-cruise at the dreamy Tahiti Pearl, one of the newest resorts in Papeete. It is located at the Bay of Matavai, and hugs Lafayette Beach, the longest natural beach on the island, which is backed by lush undeveloped mountains. We hear dolphins make regular appearances in the bay! It is only 10 minutes away from where Wind Spirit docks, and works with the cruise line to organise seamless drop-offs and pick-ups for guests.

“SASSAFRASS! is the mouthy love-child of a series of events that led to its conception.” THE LAST WORD

SASSY LASS

Cityscape chats with the musical force of nature that is Tami Neilson about her new album SASSAFRASS!, upcoming tour and rocking to her own beat in life.

What was it like growing up in a musical family? We pulled together and encouraged each other through the very hard times of having nothing and eating from food banks after being swindled by our management, to celebrating the exciting milestones of hearing our song on Top 40 country radio for the first time, to opening for Johnny Cash. My favourite memory is that sense of being part of a family unit, sharing all the successes and failures together, as opposed to being a solo artist. Tell us about the inspiration behind SASSAFRASS! SASSAFRASS! is the mouthy love-child of a series of events that led to its conception. Becoming a parent, losing a parent, turning 40 – all these things drastically change your perspective and priorities. I suddenly realised that life is too short to take the judgements of others who don’t have your best interest at heart. It happened to coincide with a huge movement for the equality of women around the world and all those ingredients really emboldened me. I guess it’s all about coming into my confidence.

You totally rock live; what’s your secret to bringing it? Physically, I really try to protect my health and my voice when I’m touring so I have the energy to bring it every night. Mentally, I listen to or watch clips of the performers that inspire me while I’m doing my hair and makeup before a show. Sharon Jones, Paul Janeway, Tank Ball, James Brown – all mind-blowing performers that leave a stage for dead when they’re done with it. Your music touches on a number of genres – how do you describe it? I guess I always think of the genres I perform as a family – soul, rockabilly, country, blues and gospel all spring from the same well, they all come from the deep Southern States. Who have been your biggest musical influences? My Dad (Ron Neilson), Etta James, Judy Garland, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Patsy Cline, Sharon Jones, Dolly Parton, Ray Charles, Bobbie Gentry, Nina Simone, Louis Armstrong, Loretta Lynn, Mavis Staples... I’d take up this whole damn page if you let me! ‘Stay Outta My Business’ is such a powerhouse track – where did it come from? On tour last year I had people criticising me on a nightly basis for leaving my children at home and not taking them with me on tour, “How can you leave your children? They need their mother!” It was a very hard time and I had to do a lot of work on breaking the cycle of guilt and shame society places on mothers who work. I had an epiphany one day while reading a blog of another musician mother who takes her children with her on tour – and she was getting the same criticism every night after her shows, but, it was “How can you drag them around with you on tour? They need routine – they

should be in bed!” I suddenly realised that no matter what you do in this life, you will be judged and criticised, so, you may as well do what is best for you and your family and what makes you all happy. This song is my anthem, celebrating that freedom! There are so many killer quotes about you; what’s your favourite? My two recent faves are a couple from the U.S: “Tami Neilson is a full-tilt badass monster of music” (Saving Country Music) and “...a fire breathing R&B belter on her own terms” (Rolling Stone Country). They’re tied for first at the moment. What’s the secret to a gravitydefying beehive? A good rat tail comb, Quick Tease hairspray by Redken and some strong-grip bobby pins. What do you have in store for us at the Isaac Theatre Royal? I’ve recorded my last three albums in Lyttelton, so it’s exciting to take the show back to where this music was all created. I cannot wait to tear up that stage with my Hot Rockin’ Band of Rhythm and have an ass-shakin’ celebration of sass! Tami Neilson, Isaac Theatre Royal, July 27, tamineilson.com
