print we marked our 4-year anniversary since the devastating February 22 earthquakes savaged our city. Looking back it’s amazing to see just how far we’ve come and what we’ve achieved during this time as our city, homes and lives are rebuilt, regenerated and revitalised. While there is still much to do, together we are working towards an exciting future filled with limitless possibility and opportunity. Recent additions to the city scene include prohibition-style swanky speakeasy Mama Hooch on Colombo Street; it's the brainchild of the talented troop behind Venuti (handily located just down the road). Also new to the neighbourhood is Bodhi Tree sibling Rangoon Ruby, who are rocking their signature Burmese along Colombo Street. Fans of hearty, home-cooked Italian are welcoming Casa Nostra (pictured) to the city’s dining scene. Helmed by

the original Tutto Bene team, they’re bringing their epic flavours to the old Gorilla digs in Ferrymead. Over on Victoria Street the clock is ticking down to the opening of Castrols Bar & Café, a new venture from the creators of The Serious Sandwich. Good news for Christchurch’s movie hounds – arthouse darling Alice Cinematheque is opening two new boutique cinemas this year. Rekindling the glamour and grandeur of a night at the movies, three-screen offering Rangiora Town Hall Cinemas (complete with café and a fully licensed bar) swings open its lavish doors in early March, while a two screen cinema is also tipped to open at The Tannery complex in Woolston midyear. Alice in Videoland director Jeremy Steward said the new cinemas were part of the famous rental store's move into theatres due to the popularity of movie streaming, and would showcase a mix of arthouse and handselected blockbusters. www.townhallcinemas.co.nz

AT THE MOVIES If ever there was a place void of common courtesy and decency, it’s the cinema. The lights go down, the movie starts and you settle in for 2 hours of retinadazzling mobile phone screens and furious texting (let’s not forget the occasional call!), incessant rustling, personal space invaders and – the very worst offenders – talkers. Urgh, stop rehashing last night’s dinner or narrating the film/ giving the actors advice! (FYI: a) you are not Morgan Freeman, and b) they can’t hear you!) When entering these hallowed, darkened halls of shared escapism, there are implied rules. Firstly, the no mobiles screener is not there for your health (though texting and taking/making calls during a movie is a great way to lose a couple of teeth). If it’s a spacious screening, stretch out – don’t sit directly in front of, or next to, someone else. Open any excessively packaged snacks during the trailers and advertising. Finally, if arriving late, don’t go interrupting people’s cinema-going experience with the audacity of asking them to move over – suck it up, hit the front row and leave earlier next time!

Olé! The Royal New Zealand Ballet goes tilting at windmills in March (11–14) with Don Quixote. Opening their 2015 season "somewhere in La Mancha", the RNZB will perform Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th century tale of adventure, chivalry, love (and a bit of rambling) – one of world literature’s most venerated treasures, and a story that has inspired one of the greatest works in classical ballet. The RNZB’s own production of the work is described as a fiery, flirtatious delight that combines virtuoso choreography with a comic flair that is sure to appeal to all ages. Then in May (28–30), the company returns to the city to present Salute, (pictured) a very special piece created in collaboration with New Zealand composers and choreographers and the New Zealand Army Band to commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli landings. THE ICONIC: HOLLYWOOD CINEMA Christchurch’s grand dame of movies, the Hollywood Cinema has been plying its trade seaside since 1938. The old girl got things going with 1937 flick Wings of the Morning and has been the home of Sumner cinema ever since, outlasting all of its contemporaries to be the only suburban cinema in the city still standing and running after 80 years of operation. Local legend Lang Masters has helmed the cinema for more than 50 of those years, and visiting Lang’s pride and joy today to catch an arthouse hit or blockbuster at one of the 3 theatres is like taking a delightfully anachronistic trip back in time to when movies meant glamour. FAMILY REUNIONS If there was ever a time for self-medication via over-the-counter sleeping aids and alcohol, or springing the ‘get out of jail free’ card (that unexpected work trip), it’s family reunion time. Learn to sidestep the social landmines and go in with the right headspace though, and you might even enjoy yourself … Sure, you love ‘em – they’re family, right? But there’s generally a reason why you don’t see the extended fam that often outside of non-church-based activities, so when they come together it’s like an apocalyptic alignment of planets. Cramming the familials into one venue and then adding booze unleashes a whole new world of insanity where, two hours in, best behaviour inevitably starts waning and a high-octane meltdown (or two) is suddenly on the cards. Firstly, stay out of the firing line and avoid the fallout. You’re gonna want to roll with the (many) punches – don’t respond to Uncle Tom’s barely-veiled character slurs with equally jacked-up retorts (he’s not fooling anyone with that matted, skew-whiff hairline, so no need to point it out). Go easy on the cans; as much as it seems like a good idea, losing your inhibitions and telling that ballin’ cousin who’s been stunting on you all day what you really think is never going to end well. And remember, unless you’re a Jolie-Pitt, family reunions are lame, so just go with it and have a good time (it’ll be over sooner than you think!).

How did you get into horseradish sauce? I have been Cityscape catches up with making horseradish sauce for about 10 years now. I joined Mandys Horseradish forces with another Mandy (hence the name), who was in whisperer Mandy Steel. possession of an old family recipe. After 4 years I bought her out. Best thing about your job? When I get great feedback from my customers and renowned chefs it puts a smile on my face and justifies the effort. Fave way to enjoy your sauce? Roast Beef, Yorkshire puddings, gravy and a big dollop of horseradish sauce! I can’t eat salmon without horseradish either. One thing people probably don’t know about horseradish? The colder the soil is, the hotter the horseradish is! Horseradish has many medicinal qualities, such as boosting the immune and circulatory systems and fighting colds. Brag files? A highlight so far would be winning a Cuisine Artisan Award. What’s next – world domination? Of course! It was a mad obsession that drove local boy Sam Hooper back to Christchurch earlier this year with a mission to serve Cantabrians the best dumplings in the land. He set out to match the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods... and his team are nailing it. Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Norman, the dumpling master, hand-makes the dumpling dough, chops all the locally sourced vegetables and herbs, and selects the free-range meat on a daily basis using techniques learned through his 30 years of dumpling-making in Shanghai. SAFE AS HOUSES: PROPERTY INVESTMENT 101 Cityscape caught up with Harcourts property guru Mary Turnbull for the lowdown on investing in property. What’s the local investment property market like? It’s an attractive market for both seasoned and novice investors as there’s a lot of property available, giving the investor the chance to buy well. Interest rates remain low and the outlook for the city is extremely positive both from an immigration and rebuild perspective. If you add these elements together it’s definitely a good time to consider investing, and I believe this climate will be maintained for the next 18 – 24 months. What are the key considerations? Potential investors need to build their confidence, and this centres around accurately establishing the return a property would give you prior to purchase, maintaining that figure if possible, and being able to shoulder changes such as interest rates increasing. They also need to be comfortable with the location they purchase in, remembering that this will also determine what sort of tenants they

will attract. What should first time investors look out for? The biggie is not doing their homework about the property, area, returns and requirements of being a landlord. Where are the hot locations? Real estate is all about location, location, location. The north/west of Christchurch has always been a safe area for investors, meaning it holds its value and attracts quality tenants. Apartment or house? There are different appetites for different investors. Investing in both houses and apartments is popular. It is important to know what you are getting yourself into, as apartments can often have additional costs – for example, body corporate fees and rules which may not appeal to everyone. What yield percentage

should be aimed for? This all depends on the investor’s strategy, whether it is focused on cash flow or capital gain in the future. There are a lot of properties in the market that have a gross yield between 5 – 7 per cent. Anything above this is a complete bonus. Generally higher returns have higher risk. For example, ‘as is where is’ uninsured properties can offer a higher yield; however this comes with higher risk. Property manager or DIY? This is a personal choice; however, there is a benefit in using property managers, as they are experts in looking after landlords, maintaining their rights and obligations just as they do for tenants. Sheeran has had an incredible last 12 months and his relentless touring has kept him at the top of the charts. X is full of great songs jam-packed with sing-a-long choruses, brilliant songwriting and clever and catchy lyrics which have given him hit after hit. The killer radio tracks ‘Sing’ (produced by music’s man of the moment Pharell Williams), ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and ‘Don’t’ are the singles so far, with plenty more to come – a brilliant album, and a must for any collection.

A good old-fashioned romance that has charmed cinema audiences worldwide, The Lunchbox sees a mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connect a young and lonely housewife, Ila (Nimrat Kaur), to the older man Saajan (Irrfan Khan). Saajan sends back a note to state the mistake but thank her for the food regardless. However, his love for her food comes as a surprise to Ila, who is more accustomed to her thankless husband, and she decides to keep sending the lunch box for Saajan. The two begin exchanging notes and soon they reveal more to each other through their correspondence than they would to anyone else.

BEETHOVEN’S BACK Following the popularity of its Beethoven concert series last year, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will turn to the evergreen German once again to kick off their 2015 touring programme, this time tackling some of Ludwig’s piano concertos with the assistance of British virtuoso Freddy Kempf. Renowned for his outstanding musicianship and charismatic, physically dramatic performance style, Kempf is making his fourth trip to New Zealand, and was described on his last visit to these shores as having “the slickness of a cheetah on the keys”. Step back in time at Ferrymead Heritage Park, with a leisurely stroll down a 1920s street portraying a church, school and police house and jail alongside the bakery, general store, lawyer, cinema and printer. Enjoy the fun and excitement of rides on steam trains and electric trams. Steam trains run on the FIRST Sunday of each month. Electric trams run at the park 7 days every week. Hot and cold food and drinks available on weekends and during school holidays.
