Editor’s note
Christchurch seriously rocks spring. The explosion of colours of our city in bloom kicks winter’s dreary concrete grey palette (sure grey is so hot right now, just not so much in skies) to the curb and heralds good times ahead. Watching those first cherry blossom buds bursting into life along Hagley Park, raining down their pink confetti, announces festival/party season, awesome seasonal fare enjoyed al fresco, outdoor adventures aplenty and killer fashions. To ensure you make every moment count, our Spring issue is a celebration of all that is hot and happening in food, fashion and homeware trends along with our legendary fun hacks – welcome to the party Cityscapers!

STRANGE’S LANE: A CASE STUDY IN COOL One year on, Cityscape checks out the city’s killer entertainment quarter, Strange’s Lane. Christchurch’s ragin’ Cajun quarter channels some serious Bourbon Street swagger. Tucked up an unassuming High Street alley, strings of hundreds of fairy lights lead to the bohemian bricked courtyard, where Melbourne street-smarts meet New York sass and bangin’ live music fires up revellers. The holy trinity within comprises funky watering hole Strange & Co., where killer prohibition-cool cocktails are swilled among resplendent pimped-up industrial chic, the effortless cool of Lower 9th Diner’s US dive bar cred, complete with pre-requisite college party red cups and some seriously southern and affordable eats (the Crayfish Roll is straight up flavour country), alongside the Diner’s upscale big brother Orleans. Itself the younger brother to the Auckland institution, Orleans Christchurch follows its northern sibling’s winning trifecta of hearty Creole soul food, hard liquor by way of a bodacious US whiskey menu and serious live music housed in infectious feel-good New Orleans funk. The rustic setting fuses ol’ skool southern artefacts and trinkets with a distinctly local twist by way of a fit-out comprised almost entirely from earthquake salvaged material, which adds a nod to the past while being completely of the moment. American-themed eats, killer cocktails, awesome live music and courtyard cool make it the place to be. www.orleans.co.nz www.strangeand.co www.lower9th.co.nz
THE ROYAL TREATMENT Cityscape caught up with legendary local writer Joe Bennett ahead of the launch of his first novel King Rich. What promoted your move into fiction? Nearly all the books that matter most to me are novels. Fiction is the lie that lets you get closest to telling the truth. I wouldn’t have considered myself a writer had I never written one. Though now, having written one, I’m still not sure I consider myself a novelist. What inspired the story? A guy in the pub a few weeks after the February earthquake told me there was a hobo living in the Grand Chancellor hotel inside the central city cordon. I loved the idea immediately, saw richness in the juxtaposition of the battered drunk and a posh hotel and limitless towels and minibars. I wrote a column about it at the time. But that didn’t exhaust the potential of the image and eventually it expanded into King Rich. How much of you is in the novel? All the characters, male and female, nice and nasty, arise from bits of my own nature. We all, to paraphrase Whitman, embrace multitudes. How does Christchurch inspire your writing? No more than living anywhere else would. People are the same the world over. And novels are about people. That said, inevitably the place you live has a bearing on what you experience. And it provides a canvas to paint on. King Rich is available through HarperCollins in September. Catch Joe at Word Christchurch on 24 September www.wordchristchurch.co.nz

PICKING A WINNER Spring means Cup Week in Christchurch, and if it’s time to step punting on the nags up a level or two beyond the randomlydrawn office sweepstake (don’t spend that $16 all at once!), you might want a few clues before you start. Here’s the quick-n’-dirty Cityscape guide to picking a winner. If you’re trackside, the parade ring is the best place to spot a good ‘un before the race. Try to spot a horse that looks fit and alert, with good muscle tone, and that’s walking in a calm and purposeful manner – aim for one that looks like it’s on a mission. Favourites win about a third of the time, so intuitively enough they’re probably the safest bet (but at low-paying odds). Look at how they’ve done in similar track conditions and at similar distances to your upcoming race. Some horses have a past history of winning at long odds, making them a good pick! Sticking with a winning jockey throughout a meeting can pay dividends. Remember that no-one wins all the time; that’s part of the fun. If all else fails, go for the name you like!

DON’T GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB Cityscape’s Kayte Johnston tries her hand at dumpling mastery with a day at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar. I’m very good at eating dumplings; I generously immerse them in chilli oil and savour their delicious favours with each bite. So when I’m offered the opportunity to join the team at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar at The Colombo, I’m thinkin’ ‘hello mothership’. The day starts early (and suitably caffeinated), hitting the Chinese markets and liaising with Peter Timbs Meats for free-range meat and Peter Rabbit’s Patch for fresh vegetables for the fillings (about 13 kilos of coriander and 10 kilos of garlic chives are used each week!), then it’s time to pull on the crisp white PSD top and cap and rock this gig. Dumplings, I’m told, can be filled with just about anything. However, they have to be made with love. Tracy and Angela kindly show me the ropes: each dumpling case is expertly filled, folded together to form intricate pleats then cooked (steamed or fried) to order. My normally nimble keyboard-savvy digits, unfortunately, are no match for their 400-dumplings-an-hour prowess. Their dexterity comes in handy as it’s pretty much hammer time from 11.30am to 3pm, then prepping starts for the next day. It’s fast, furious and super fun work, and I’ll definitely be back – to order some from the other side of the counter!
RARE BEER Celebrate spring with Moa’s Festive IPA. On its third outing, this limited edition seasonal sessional, this time with a Belgian twist, rocks an almost 80 IBU (International Bittering Units) reading and brings the hops with a fruity, spicy finale. www.moabeer.com THE NEW KALE Knocking the bitter leaf off its superfood perch, Mediterranean staple the globe artichoke (it’s actually a species of thistle) boasts the triple threat of being chockfull of magnesium, high in fibre and leads the chart for veggies with the highest ranking of total antioxidants (the arch nemesis of those pesky, prematurely-aging free radicals) per serving. Bursting with phytonutrients including quercetin, rutin, gallic acid and cynarin, artichokes are said to be brilliant at protecting against a gaggle of health risks including cancer, heart disease, liver dysfunction, high cholesterol and diabetes. We’re also told it’s a killer hangover cure … so the perfect brekkie after a night on the tiles then. 16

SURVIVAL GUIDE
CUP DAY With racing season upon us the moral bastion that is Cityscape thought it prudent (read: necessary) to impart some advice get you through the day (and keep you off the 6 o’clock news!).
Cup Day’s a big deal, right? You spend hours glamming up to leave the house looking absolutely mint rockin’ some hella ensemble and, quite often, arrive at the end of the day looking like you’ve been dragged through the proverbial bush backwards. No one wants to be the passed-out guy clinging to a half empty beer with a lip-stick sketched penis emblazoned his right cheek, or be among the glassy-eyed gaggle of gals weaving, fascinators frazzled, make-up a la Courtney Love and heels in hand, across the evening news. Avoid later pain and start the day as your mother always nagged – with a good breakfast! There’s no better foundation to approach a day in the sun on the cans. You’ll keep those hunger pangs at bay and won’t end up with bubbles + empty stomach = wearing half the kebab your scarfing down half-cut at 1pm. Guys: remember to drink some water in between those beers, and don’t forget the sunnies (matched to your outfit please, those wraparound midweekers won’t cut it). Ladies: treat your feet; tuck a pair of ballerina flats in the handbag for walking to and from the course and make sure your headgear is matched to your outfit and the day – no one wants to be trying to tie down a big-brimmed beauty during a howling gale!

the HOME FRONT Cityscape hits up the experts to find out what’s hot and happening in homes this season.
THE DESIGNER TOUCH INTERIORS with Frobisher Interiors' Georgia Langridge Right now we are taking our search for inspiration international, and are loving two trends in particular that combine timeless luxury with unexpected contemporary features. The new elegance An Art Deco-derived trend that incorporates lavish fabrics such as soft silks and plush velvets teamed with brass and gold. Subtle tonal variances of greens or blues will allow the metals to be your accents that pop. Further adding to this is the use of statement pieces such as Art Deco-inspired starburst chandeliers to provide a central focal point and create an ambience within the space. This is a formula that heightens the drama in an interior, achieving a fine balance of a relaxed elegance. Bringing the outdoors in Designers are typically inspired by the natural world that surrounds them, and this season in interiors is no exception. Wood, leather and stones contrasting against soft natural fabrics will not only provide interest to the eye, but also be engaging to the touch. Flowers, succulents and foliage plants are an effortless way to achieve a ‘green’ interior. For a hint of sophistication, use crisp white lillies.
RED-HOT AND TRENDING
Planet-friendly and oh so eco-cool, style’s latest must-have is all about reclaimed wood. Whether it’s a funky accent wall or custom piece, reclaimed wood brings natural material and a back story into the home – mix with salvaged stone, metal and white marble for the ultimate luxe touch. Weatherboard Table (RRP $2,625) from Rekindle www.rekindle.org.nz
claiming Marsala the colour of the year. Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, the grounding red-brown hue is being touted as emanating a sophisticated, natural earthiness. For those unconvinced, or less brazen, word is grey is the new beige. Lean to the taupey side and bolster with earthy elements. Riffing on the 2015 spring/summer collections dreamy pastels are also hot (think candy pink and minty green), as are wishy washy watercolours in blues, oranges, yellows, pinks and greens.
GO GREEN Bring the outdoors in with the botanic trend. Tipped as the year of the pot plant, 2015 sees potted jungles of layered different plant varieties bringing you closer to nature. Keep things lush with dark green leaves and not much (if anything) in the way of flowers to pull it off. 24

IN THE KITCHEN While white kitchens in the past decade have dominated new home and kitchen renovations alike, and enlisted the use of glass and tile splashbacks or accessories to add the colour to the space, we are now seeing a fabulous trend towards textured wooden and coloured door fronts being mixed with the timeless white door fronts, says Sarah Van der Kley, Senior Designer at Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances. “We know that white and wood is a marriage made in heaven and what we have seen throughout New Zealand and Europe is white also loves a good strong splash of colour as well. For the colour-passionate we now have door fronts in yellow, orange and a very sexy midnight blue. The trendy colours confidently invite you to get in the kitchen and get creative with your cooking.” Clever design is also important, says Julie Leonard of Euroform Kitchens. “Today’s kitchens should be about good design but also have atmosphere and personality. The kitchen is often in an open plan environment, so the design focus is on creating a good flow between the kitchen and living spaces, and this can be accentuated by the choice of colour and materials to seamlessly blend a space. Interesting combinations can be achieved by mixing of materials – glass, stone, timber, metals, painted surfaces and stainless steel – the choices are endless.”

EDWARD GIBBON
BATHROOM TRENDS For bathrooms it’s all about refined elegance with a touch of nature via earthy materials like natural stone, wood and naturallooking porcelain wall and floor tiles. According to Lesley Storm at Edward Gibbon the freestanding bath is where it’s at for creating a sculptural design feature and setting the scene for rest and relaxation.
RETRO SPEC’D Buying vintage is the ultimate in eco-friendly shopping, says Monica Jordyn at Mr Mod. "Vintage is inherently recycled and reused". Well-designed and constructed (if it’s lasted this long it’s here to stay), repairable, transcending fashion fads, mixes well with modern pieces and likely to increase in value – what’s more, chances are you won’t walk into your friend’s house and see the same piece!

it comes to swimming pools, we’re going back to nature. Scrap that Jules Verne under the sea-inspired mosaic design and opt for natural-looking pools and ponds that blend in with the environment. For water features, think harmonious tranquility. Ostentatious gushing dolphin water fountains are so over; it’s all about still ponds, gentle trickles and bubbling water features.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Continuing to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living, backyards are taking on a much more significant role. They’re no longer just the backdrop for the barbie or the kids’ swing ball set – think outdoor kitchens, wood-fired pizza ovens, and elaborate outdoor dinner parties. The key to gardening trends is making it work for you – flowers are all good and well, but where’s the pay off? Cue huge trends in berryproducing shrubs (blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and red- and blackcurrants) and manageable (dwarf) fruit trees, reflective of a sustainable lifestyle. Container and food gardens provide tremendous self -satisfaction and also result in ridiculously low/non-existent food miles! GARDENTAINMENT Yep, you heard it
here first – this spring it’s all about ‘Gardentainment’ – creating a refuge in your garden that actually gets used. Spring is a time to reconnect with nature, so why not get your Zen on and transform your green space into a relaxing oasis? Invest in some outdoor furniture – perhaps a hammock to sack out in or a swing set – or create a pond or water feature and bask in the glory of Mother Nature.
Image: Groundswell Design Group, LLC.
Not just for apologising husbands, flowers can make a valuable contribution to your interior style. Nona Eklund of Moffatt’s Flower Company suggests making an impact with flowers at home by keeping it simple with one type of flower or colour mixed with greenery. For a striking feature large flowers such as lilies, chrysanthemums or tropical flowers (anthuriums, orchids and strelitzia) should be go-to choices. Letty Hamilton at Pepperberry Café & Florist (pictured) recommends seasonal blooms and opting for aromatic arrangements to carry the atmosphere throughout the house. Increase longevity by adding a drop or two of bleach and half a teaspoon of sugar (or flower food) to the water and snipping stems every 2-3 days.
Gourmand City
Brimming with, and surrounded by, artisanal producers of gourmet goodies at the top of their game, Christchurch is a heaven-sent gastronomic smorgasbord for foodies and culinary connoisseurs alike. And with some of the best produce in the world right on our doorstep (seriously – a lot of these producers just need to poke their heads out the door to source ingredients!), it’s a given that the region’s small food producers are killing it on the national (and international) scene. Why opt for bland and mass-produced when high-quality ingredients, traditional methods and plenty of love are fuelling the rise of ‘artisan eating’ both here and the world over? from the oven …
T
There’s nothing better than the smell of freshly-baked bread and sin-sational cakes – add ol’ skool techniques, natural ingredients including, gasp, butter to the mix and make a beeline for the following bodacious baked beauts. Devoted to using traditional bread-making techniques, the team at Vic’s Bakehouse (previous page) steer clear of excessive yeast and focus on maturing dough to just the right point for optimal results, resulting in a primo range of European breads that are not only healthy to eat, but also taste sensational (FYI their parmesan bagels are phenom!). Proudly Canterbury owned and operated, Divine Cakes & Desserts seamlessly blend traditional techniques and outside-the-box-nous (check out their award-winning tart on page 12) in the creation of their righteous home-baked cakes, desserts and fudges, all made with real ingredients (natch), and handmade cake decorations. Not so good on gluten? You’re not the only one. Totally Gluten Free Bakery arose out of a growing need for a specifically gluten-free bakery. From the bangin’ bacon, cheese and cracked pepper loaf to pain au chocolat and Kiwi favourite lamingtons, their creations more than hold their own against their gluten counterparts.
Butcher’s block
For fresh and cured meats and meat products, set your tastebuds on a course for adventure on an
international gastronomic odyssey without leaving the city. Authentic Spanish flavours reign supreme at Chorizos Garcia, a fave on the Curator’s House Restaurant menu, where fresh pimentón (paprika) from Spain meets New Zealand’s finest pork and traditional methods to create moreish morsels in mild and hot – guaranteed to add a deliciously smoky punch to any savoury dish. A desire to produce the food he loved, but couldn’t buy, (sound familiar?) saw Tim Morrison kick off the French-infused Morrison & Co Charcuterie in 2013 – his three core products smoked eel paté, pork and pistachio terrine, and, in particular, the duck liver parfait (see page 61) have been known to incite market rage and regularly sell out at farmers’ markets around town. To create their mouth-watering hot-smoked salmon the crew at Terra Viva Café and Deli lightly cure premium Nelson-farmed salmon with a selection of spices and hot smoke to perfection with manuka woodchips, offering it up alongside fierce homemade chicken liver paté and aioli. Game for game? Over at Main Divide Meats, prime cuts of wild venison join a Kiwi-exotic range of gluten-free smallgoods including four flavours of wild venison, goat and tahr(!) salami and a range of wild patties, sausages and biersticks – you’ll find them all down at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market. Perfectly-aged in store beef (they simply won’t sell it until it’s at its peak) is the cornerstone of the wildly popular premium butcher, deli and wine combo that is Cashmere Cuisine. Among their
award-winning sausages (think bangin’ pork, sage and apple gluten free bangers), smoked bacon (via an onsite smokehouse – see page 10) and venison, garlic and pepperoni salami you’ll also find a primo selection of wines and cheeses.

With some of the world’s purest water literally on tap, local beverages are launching Kiwicentric flavours to appreciative palates around the country. Made from 100% New Zealand handpicked elderflowers, the laborious and delicious Addmore range of beverages are crafted by experienced winemakers and hand-blended with traditional methods to produce their light, refreshing cordials and sparking drops (try the Sparkling Ginger, White Tea & Elderflower – you won’t regret it!). They also make good use of elderflower at Selwyn-based Aroha Drinks too, having started with the tasty blooms (still a mainstay of the range) before expanding into the likes of blackcurrant, feijoa and the intriguing sparkling rhubarb, which is proving so popular they’ve had to expand their rhubarb patch! Keeping things real, raw and organic, The Nutmylk Co.’s locally handpressed small batch almond mylks epitomise nutritious purity and come sans dairy, gluten, soy, refined sugar, preservatives and pesticides. Naturally high in vitamins and minerals it’s rich, creamy and satisfying.
Also keep an eye out for: the award-winning traditional breads of Tanner Street Bakery, specialty scone-maker Gretchen’s Kitchen, smallbatch, hand-rolled bagels in the US tradition from Grizzly Bagel, spectacular cake creations from By Anna, brownies to die for from Chocolate Fix, and more traditional breads from Breads of Europe.

If you’re looking for something a bit harder, the Three Boys Brewery lads are still smashing it at their Ferry Road operation, turning out special edition brews such as the pineapple lump porter on the regular and growing a burgeoning international reputation – they’re part of a thriving CHCH craft beer scene that includes Golden Eagle, Raindogs, Wigram Brewing Co, Fiasco, Two Thumbs, Pomeroy’s, Lyttelton’s Eruption Brewing, and more besides … (find an excellent local round-up at The Beer Library!).
Gourmet Goodies Liven up your pantry with a few special jars of somethin’-somethin’! White Heart Specialty Nut Butters blend batch-roasted Tai Tapugrown hazelnuts with premium, organic and fair-trade ingredients to create a range of premium spreads such as hazelnut and cocoa, and coconut and honey, and also sell delicious spiced nut sprinkles and snacks. Mandy’s Horseradish needs no introduction to local foodies; their authentic, old-fashioned and creamy horseradish sauce (with a kick!) has won awards and fans up and down the country, and is still produced with traditional methods – plus they’ve now also added a delicious horseradish and apricot mustard. Shirley’s Kitchen remains an at-home operation for Shirley Bradstock who started selling her own version of delicious Italian confection panforte and
continues to grow her business, the latest addition being her fig and walnut loaf. And pop into Taste@ Twenty to pick something up from their pesto range, which changes weekly – depending on when you drop in, you could end up with parsley and walnut, sundried tomato and almond, or something else again … you’ll want to tap their homemade hummus and aioli too (trust us!). For the shopping list: try acclaimed pickles and preserves from Jen’s Kitchen, artisan honey from J. Friend and Co. and Bell Trees, spices, pastes, pestos and more from Lyttleton-based Ground, olives, dips, sauces and other goodies from Volcano Market, small batch spreads, dips and more from Cannonhill Gourmet Foods, smoked garlic and condiments from The Original Smoke and Spice Co., olive oil that’s a cut-above from Robinson’s Bay Olive Oil and Old French Road, and city-favourite sweet treats from Fudge Cottage.
MARKET SHARE Where to track down all this goodness? Two words: farmers’ markets. Buy directly from the creators, pick their brains and sample their wares – soulless supermarkets will never look the same again! Here’s where it’s at. Christchurch Farmers’ Market The Mac Daddy of markets, this Saturday institution showcases the region’s growers, bakers, winemakers, brewers, producers and butchers en masse including Main Divide Meats and Morrison & Co Charcuterie. As an added bonus there’s also heaps of
great ready-to-eat artisan fare available for breakfast or brunch like Baodown’s seriously addictive (seriously, we’re addicted) modern take on the classic Taiwanese burger. Lyttelton Farmer’s Market A regular stop for city foodies who make the trip through the tunnel especially, the port’s farmers’ market specialises in gourmet foods including fresh fruit and vegetables, free range eggs, fresh fish, artisanal bread courtesy of Vic’s Bakehouse, meat and cheeses, juices and herbs. Opawa/St Martin’s Farmers’ Market Head down to Fifield Terrace on a Sunday morning to get the veggies in for the week and then supplement them with fresh bread, French style pastries, free-range eggs, locally made Italian cheeses, ready-to-eat salads, and more. Lincoln Farmers’ Market Filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables, German baking, pizzas and pastries, sweet treats, and gourmet delicacies and treats including wine, pesto, honey, fruit cordials, cheese, olive oil, hazelnut products, fudge, and other gourmet foods. Downtown Farmers’ Market New on the scene, the Sunday arvo market at The Commons has a strong focus on fresh, local (where possible) produce, smallgoods, fish, bread, cheese, deli, eggs, coffee and juices, and offers food stalls and trucks selling great ready-to-eat food. Riccarton Market Held every Sunday from 9am until 2pm at its dedicated marketground at Riccarton Park Racecourse, the grand-pappy of Christchurch markets is the biggest of its kind in the country. Amongst its 300-plus stalls you’ll find a decent sprinkling of artisan food and beverages, including local beers and wine.
DAIRY GOOD Traditionally-made dairy includes the bounty of Barrys Bay Cheese on the peninsula; Mt Grey Cheese and Karikaas traditionally-made Dutch-style cheeses, butter and culture. in Rangiora; and Emilio’s Cheese near Kirwee.

CANTERBURY (ART) TRAILS
Bryce Gallery
Frobisher Interiors
T
he local art scene did it tough for a while after the quakes, with lack of suitable spaces in particular a real problem, but necessity being the mother of invention (particularly in resilient art circles), we’ve seen it bounce back well, with artistic havens popping up in all sorts of places. With the work of so many outstanding local artists showcased within easy reach, there’s really no excuse for not knowing the local talent – so get out there and uncover the next big thing!
Central City We may be
waiting on the Arts Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery (soon!) and CoCA Gallery (very soon!) to re-open, but that doesn’t mean the central city is bereft of art – far from it. There’s plenty of spectacular new street art to check out, but a whole host of formal establishments, too. Drop into the unique Auricle sound art gallery in New Regent Street,
catch up with the latest in art jewellery trends at The National, see what many of the old Arts Centre market artists are up to at Worcester Boulevard’s Boulevard Arts Market, and investigate the latest exhibitions at Canterbury Museum or Frobisher Interiors, which has added a gallery space to sit alongside its interiors showroom and café. In Moorhouse Avenue Chambers 241 is a dealer gallery and artists’ studio space that exhibits the work of leading and emerging New Zealand artists, and Kiwi artists are also the focus over at the pop-up Arts Central on Peterborough Street on the old Convention Centre site. The Physics Room is approaching 20 years as a successful gallery space, even if they’ve had to shift from the Arts Centre – these days you can head upstairs after a coffee at C1 Espresso – while the Brooke Gifford Gallery in Cambridge Terrace goes all the way back to 1975. In the north of the city North Projects is an artist-run
initiative in Bealey Avenue that operates out of a former dwelling and courtyard that supports the development of new and experimental art practices, and just down the street is PG Gallery 192, a recently opened dealer gallery representing contemporary New Zealand artists.
South There’s some specialisation southwards – City Art Depot in Disraeli Street focuses its interest on prints and other works on paper (and also offers framing and hanging services), and prints are the name of the game too at New Zealand Fine Prints, while Form Gallery, as its name would suggest, is a showcase for sculpture and object art. Jonathan Smart Gallery relocated to Sydenham in 2013 and continues its mission of showcasing leading contemporary artists working in a wide range of different mediums, and Addington’s Qb Studios offers regularly changing exhibitions
Road Trip There’s lots to see just outside the city limits, too. Get in the car and out to the Little River Gallery en route to Galley Lavaud, Art Et Fare, Lava Gallery and the Akaroa Arts Gallery in Akaroa, head to Art on the Quay and Fragments of Grace in Kaiapoi, Arts in Oxford, over to the Chamber Gallery and Artist’s Eye Gallery in Rangiora, the Selwyn Gallery in Darfield, and the spanking new Ashburton Art Gallery.

ARTIST PROFILE: JOEL HART Christchurch artist Joel Hart’s immediately recognisable style combines influential images of the past and present to create a sense of raw emotion and passion captured in his female subjects. (come say hello to the Cityscape team while you’re there!). If you’ve picked something up for home after all this artistic temptation, you can head to Eco Frame and Mirror for a comprehensive framing treatment. If you’re in Lyttelton, pop past Tin Palace (Thu – Sun) to see what the Harbour Arts Collective has got on, while 50 Works Gallery in the old post office was about to open as Cityscape went to print.
North You can learn to create artworks of your own via the range of classes available at Art Metro in Papanui – pop into the nearby Art Box Gallery in Loftus Street first for some inspiration – or head further north to check out the work of Greg Morris Woodturner in Woodend and the Iron Ridge Quarry Sculpture Park near Amberley. East Not only a tattoo and body
piercing studio but also a gallery, there’s always something interesting to have a look at over at The Tannery’s Absolution. You can check out the latest exhibition at the Eastside Gallery at the Linwood Community Centre, and then enrol in art classes yourself if you get

inspired! Ferry Road’s Windsor Gallery offers a comprehensive framing service, but also original art. Keep heading east and you’ll find the community-run Brighton Gallery in Brighton Mall just before you get wet, and there’s more art by the sea at Sumner’s L’Estrange Gallery.
West The University of
Canterbury’s Ilam Campus Gallery in the Fine Arts Block has developed an excellent reputation with its carefully curated programme of exhibitions; slightly north of the campus you can have a go at creating a bit of fine art of your own at Paint ’n’ Sip. Down Riccarton
Road, Bryce Gallery offers regularly changing exhibitions from both established and emerging artists.
Don’t Miss:
Dick Frizzell in September, Heather Straka in October and Megan Jenkinson & Brenda Nightingale in November at Jonathan Smart Gallery. Bryce Gallery’s spring exhibitions include invitational group show ‘Home is where the Heart’ is in September and ‘Tribute to the Masters’ (Galina Kim & Stephanie McEwin) in October/November. FIT TO GIVE Struggling to get properly committed to that fitness routine? Maybe what you need is a bit of good karma as motivation. Organised charity fitness offers plenty of pros; having a calendar date to build towards, taking the hard work of all the organisation out of your hands so you just have to show up, and the feel-good factor of helping a good cause – and with all the motivational benefits of group fitness besides. Events in the city are sprinkled throughout the year; keep an eye out for: The Pink Star Walk (November) An evening walk (bedecked in pink, see above) with both 5km and half-marathon options in support of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. The Great Santa Run (December) This major fundraiser for KidsCan sees hundreds of runners dressed in Santa suits take off down city streets to support kids in need. Relay for Life (February) Walk throughout the night and raise funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. A Run To Remember (February) The quake memorial run on the Port Hills combines killer views with raising money for a different charity each year. City 2 Surf (March) The popular and long-running ‘burb-to-beach’ run offers the chance to become a ‘Heart Racer’ for the New Zealand Heart Foundation, as does the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day 5k (May) fun run/walk.

How many of us have been told that if we burn more calories than we eat, weight loss will be inevitable? How many of us have then discovered this doesn’t apply to our body no matter how hard we work? The answer – not all calories are created equal. Our bodies react very differently with calories from different sources. They may go through similar digestive processes but the biochemical reactions they trigger can be completely different. Compare how 1000 calories from fizzy drink are metabolised in the body versus 1000 calories from broccoli. When you consume a fizzy drink your body quickly absorbs the fibre-less sugars and the glucose spikes your blood sugar, which stimulates insulin and subsequently signals to your body to store body fat. Inflammation is increased, triglycerides are raised (essentially fat in your blood), and leptin, one of the hormones involved in appetite regulation, is blocked. If you were to consume 1,000 calories from broccoli – a high fibre option that barely registers an effect on your blood glucose – you don’t trigger the same biochemical reaction at all. Firstly, you wouldn’t even be able to consume 1,000 calories from broccoli, as that would be close to 21 cups – leptin would kick in and let you know you’ve had enough and you would experience the feeling of being full. I have witnessed this for almost two decades in clinical practice. When my patients stop counting calories and focus on nourishing their body by eating real food, good fats and plenty of vegetables, they have a rapid improvement in their overall well-being, but they also feel satisfied. It changes their relationship with food completely. Often they end up eating more calories yet the weight starts to fall off, and often for the first time in years. Some naturally high fat (and therefore high calorie) foods are some of the most healthful we can eat in terms of promoting weight loss and reducing our risk of diabetes or heart disease. Avocados are a great example – a high calorie food full of helpful good fats. Focus on eating more real foods, avoid processed and packaged food and focus on your health rather than your weight. Consider the other health-promoting components the food contains; the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, as these are essential to our health and well-being. An avocado doesn’t come with a nutritional label, so when you move towards consuming more plant foods you naturally stop counting calories. Most people will tell you that you have to lose weight to be healthy, when these days, you actually have to be healthy to lose weight. www.drlibby.com

RIP HIPSTER BEARDS Bushy bearded dudes rockin’ chinstraps the likes favoured by the classic, red-flannelette-shirt-wearing Canadian woodchoppers take note – peak beard is upon us! If fashion has taught us anything, other than being an incredibly fickle and cruel mistress, it’s that when a trend hits mass saturation, it’s already over. It all kicked off around six years ago (and six years is a pretty good innings in the fashion world!), pioneered by hirsute models Joel Alexander and Christopher John Millington (the names might not spark but you’ll know the famous facial follicles), then taken mainstream by David Beckham and Ryan Gosling. But you can hear the death knell ringing loud and clear every time TV chat show host Graham Norton’s alarming facial fuzz, reminiscent of Papa Smurf or a Lord of the Rings extra, bristles its way onto the box. Shave on brothers, or continue in irony.

Canterbury Cup Week is looming … Exciting times for us fashionistas and race-day-goers. I can already see, thanks to this year’s colours and trends, that the outfits are going to be even more fabulous. Here’s the super-hot colour trends you should be wearing for race week: White-on-white is still very trendy, timeless and versatile, and will leave you looking chic and elegant but also help keep you cool during the heat of the day. Two piece suits and jumpsuits are the perfect combination of tailoring and elegance, and I’m loving the wide-leg trouser trend. Why not rock it at the races? Dress hemlines need to be watched; a great option is a slim-fitting knee-length and over-the-knee dress that will flatter with a feminine silhouette. Three quarter sleeves and long sleeves also look stylish and flattering. Dare to be daring! If you want to stand out from the crowd, you need colour – yellow is always a favourite. Make a statement with detail, exotic prints and the most striking accessories that you can find. This year it’s all about the 70’s floral prints and Japanese-inspired prints. Floral prints make a big impact on the field fashion for all ages. Fabrics are rich in both texture and colour. And don’t forget that matching fascinator to wow or to balance your stunning look. www.stylingbyjacquivictor.co.nz

We all feel the refreshing sense of awakening that spring brings and the feeling of really wanting to engage in our life again, that ‘spring cleaning’ effect, be it our house, car or wardrobe. But do you take a moment to attend to the spring clean that really matters – attending to the clutter of the mind, the repetitive thoughts that fill our day and drive that perpetual sense of always having so much to do? Your mental clutter needs to be addressed if you really want to achieve any sense of new space or energy. Mindful Awareness, the Art of Meditation is a direct path to achieving this sense of decluttering and spring cleaning. To discover that within you – beyond the mental noise – lies a place of peace and a space of clarity that allows you to see your life from a new perspective, is more powerful than clean windows and a tidy wardrobe! Mindfulness Meditation may be the new Yoga, the new lifestyle trend, but like yoga, even if you approach it from a purely physical perspective, attempting to avoid its spiritual heritage, you will still feel its effect taking hold in your soul and your outside life will begin to declutter with the least amount of effort from you. www.pascha.co.nz

HOT PROPERTY WITH MARY TURNBULL
PREPPING FOR SALE Before putting your house on the market you’ll want to make sure it’s looking its best, and a little bit of effort will not only result in a quicker sale, but also help you get top dollar. If I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to take the time to spruce up your house before going on the market. You’re much better off waiting and getting your house looking its absolute best than rushing to get it on the market looking ‘almost there’. For starters: your house has to sparkle; it needs to be impeccably clean everywhere! That means windows, walls, cupboard tops, the oven, driveway and exterior. Don’t neglect the garden either; it should be well-tended and tidy. Inside, living areas should be de-cluttered much as possible – hide the family photos (one or two are fine but you don’t want prospective buyers wondering: ‘Who owns this house?’), pack away travel souvenirs and put any large, chunky furniture pieces in storage. You want to create a minimalist, open and airy space. The property should be well-ventilated prior to the open home and fresh flowers, beautiful scented candles (not overpowering) and freshly-brewed coffee will help set the scene and freshen rooms. Keep things tidy behind cupboards, wardrobe doors and inside drawers too – these are going to be opened, and finding a neatly-ordered spice rack will lead prospective buyers to believe you’re similarly fastidious around the house. And if you’ve moved out, an empty property will definitely benefit from some home staging. When it comes to open homes, I try and have as many as possible (a minimum of one during the week and two over weekends) timed to highlight the property during its sunniest. I aim for longer open homes – an hour is best, with 45 minutes being the minimum – the more people you can get through, the better chances of selling. Your house needs to look lived in, but not owned by someone else – prospective buyers need to picture themselves living there! www.maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

66 Victoria Street, Central City 03 366 6948 www.palazzokitchens.co.nz Open: Mon – Fri 9am – 5:30pm, Sat/Sun 10am – 4pm
What started over 10 years ago in Christchurch has developed into an exemplary story of national success. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances have experienced overwhelming growth in the past few years. Today’s designer kitchens are sleek and refined, delivering beautiful living spaces that seamlessly integrate function with comfort. Victoria Street Branch Manager Charlotte Neale says “kitchens are the new living spaces – a space for enjoying time with family and friends”. The living-room-style design introduces an unconventional mix of styles and exquisite materials. Amalgamating classic style and modern elements into one kitchen helps break the barriers to complete the perfect open plan living space. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances use of the very latest in European technologies from Germany is seen as the basis of their continuing development and growth. “Made in Germany” is not simply a slogan, but incorporates a true commitment to quality. Pieta Fletcher, Senior Designer, notes that at Palazzo they determine “the look, the functionality and the specifics” (such as appliances) that you want in your kitchen. When they produce a photo-style image for you, the design is as realistic as possible. They then go through the design with you, adding adjustments and accessories as necessary. Palazzo offer two German-made kitchen brands, Nobilia and Rational. “I enjoy designing and selling kitchens from the Nobilia range as there’s a style to suit everyone’s taste and budget” says Sarah Van der Kley, Senior Designer. Senior Designer Emily Erickson adds that Nobilia is able to achieve high-performance production, delivering unique, high quality kitchen furniture to over 2,600 homes every day. Palazzo also specialise in Rational Kitchen Furniture, which has been available in New Zealand for over 20 years. Rational are the masters of colour and style – their stunning range pairs strong, contemporary colours, available in the most beautiful gloss & matt lacquers, with unique and interesting layouts – blurring the boundaries between kitchens & furniture is what gives Rational “their luxury edge”, says Senior Kitchen Designer Monique Enoka. In Victoria Street you will find a highly qualified kitchen design team, an array of full kitchen displays, appliances, bench tops, sinks, taps, splashbacks, kitchen lighting and other accessories. Palazzo offer a totally free, no-obligation kitchen design service that utilises the latest European design software, allowing you to see your new kitchen in as lifelike a form as possible. READ, WATCH, LISTEN Reviews, profiles and celebrity insider goss. 1 READ King Rich, Joe Bennett. A love story – of sorts – prolific penman Joe Bennett’s first novel, set amid the physical and emotional devastation of a post-quake Christchurch (relate much?), tells the haunting story of two people linked by disaster and a desire for the truth. While Richard hides, with a lost dog (c’mon, you knew there’d be one – it’s Joe Bennett!), in an abandoned hotel creating another, more glamorous world, Annie returns home to an earthquake-jacked city looking for her lost father. Add Vince, reliving the most emotional experience of his life, to the mix and enjoy the musings of a superb writer at the top of his game. RRP $36.99.
2 WATCH Jisoe Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. Centred around the troubled life of Melbourne graffiti artist, Justin Hughes, aka Jisoe, this provocatively candid documentary explores an ignored underground sub-culture making its mark on Australian suburbs. Exposing the notion of a growing and disillusioned underclass and forging an intimate connection with a highly secretive and paranoid youth culture, this is honest social commentary at its most compelling. Through a haze of bongs, bombing trains with graff and the birth of a child, Jisoe’s snow globe is a wake-up and shake-up call for any compassionate viewer.
3 LISTEN Coming Home, Leon Bridges Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. If you’re a fan of classic R&B male vocalists like Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, then you need to hear Leon Bridges’ stunning debut. Smooth, soulful and packed full with doo-wop, ballads and gospel backing singers, standout tracks include radio-friendly ‘Coming Home’, ‘Lisa Sawyer’ a beautiful ballad dedicated to his mother, and up tempo entries like ‘Smooth Sailin’ and ‘Flower’. Closing with ‘River’, an acoustic tambourineflavoured gospel ballad with haunting vocals is the perfect finale, but you’ll want more. Could be album of the year!
4 CINEPHILES Bond Bombshells Donning the suave tux of international superspy James Bond for the fourth time, Daniel Craig’s foray into the murky world of global criminal agency SPECTRE is set to be the most expensive James Bond movie ever made, with a US$350 million budget. But that’s not the only first in the 24-film franchise: at 50, Italian stunner Monica Bellucci (Irreversible) will be the oldest actor cast as a Bond girl, while playing up to the martini-swilling player’s penchant for international babes, smokin’ hottie Stephanie Sigman (Miss Bala) will become the first Mexican Bond girl when the movie hits the screens in mid-November.
FAMILY
TIES Hollywood heart-throb and method actor extraordinaire Jake Gyllenhaal famously backed up a 13.5kg weight loss to play a creeped-out sociopathic cameraman in Nightcrawler by packing on 7kg of muscle to become totally unrecognisable in Southpaw (pictured); he is also Hollywood royalty. The Oscarnominated actor’s whole family is in showbiz: dad Stephen is a director, mum Naomi is a producer and screen writer, and thespian sister Maggie is also an Oscar-nominated actor. Add god parents Jamie Lee Curtis and the late Paul Newman, who also taught him to drive, and you’ve got a career written in, or by, the stars. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

AS SEEN IN …
Cityscape hits up some the world’s most famous film destinations. The world’s coming here to stand in front of all those gorgeous, green backdrops from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit – so assuming you’ve ticked a few of the Rings locations off already, here are a few hot overseas destinations for feeling like a Hollywood hero. Petra, Jordan – It’s hard to forget the moment when Indiana Jones arrives at the temple of the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade, and almost equally hard to believe you can have the same experience yourself in Petra, arriving by donkey (you probably won’t find any centuriesold knights, though). Phuket, Thailand – The gorgeous vistas of Thailand have popped up in plenty of films, including James Bond entries and notably in Danny Boyle’s The Beach. Head to Ko Phi Phi Lee beach, dig your toes in the sand and stand where Leo DiCaprio did (just mind the pot plantation!). Hatfield House, UK – When Hollywood
needs a home for a rich superhero, it heads for Hatfield House in Hertfordshire. The historic country house (1611) has played the onscreen digs of both Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Batman, as well as hosting scenes for Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare in Love, V for Vendetta and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, which you can spot on a guided tour. Malta – Epitomising Mediterranean splendour, Malta’s
famous Azure Window has starred front and centre in Clash of the Titans (the good 80s version – Kraken anyone?) The Count of Monte Cristo and also on TV’s The Odyssey, but most famously in Game of Thrones, while the tiny island has provided the backdrop to blockbusters including Midnight Express, Gladiator, Alexander, Troy, The Da Vinci Code, World War Z and many (many!) more.
PACKING LIGHT Everybody wants to travel
light; barely anyone does. It pays to make some hard decisions ahead of your trip, or you’ll find yourself cursing your bulging suitcase of unworn clothes you’re lugging all over the globe for no reason at all. Here are the rules: Three’s all you need: wear one, wash one, dry one. Double duty: find items that have multiple uses. Buy toiletries at your destination. Limit yourself to a bag that will qualify for carry on; you’ll force yourself into packing the essentials and escape the terminal in super quick time – sayonara luggage carousel. Let’s face it: you don’t need that (or that either).

Done Beerfest in Munich already? The Cannstatter Volksfest (Stuttgart Beer Festival) is a similar celebration with a bit of a different flavour; running from 25 September to 11 October, it offers carnival rides, live music, and of course, plenty of sweet amber gold. The biennial World Puppet Theatre Festival returns in 2015 to Charleville-Mézières, the French town known as ‘the world capital of puppetry arts’. The 18 – 27 September fest sees 150 international companies performing as many as 50 shows per day. And we couldn’t not include it: the ABs defend the Rugby World Cup in the UK from 19 September to 1 November final at Twickenham (we hope!).

VIVA LA CUBAN!
Image: André Glynn Photography
Flanked by a towering cigarchomping, steel-eyed possible dictator or cartel runner mural on one wall and a stunning, tangerine ‘April Sun in Cuba’-style panorama on the opposite one, it’s clear we’re not in Christchurch anymore. Bringing a slice of Havana to the central city, the team behind Baretta have hit one out of the park with their new cabana of cool The Cuban, seriously upping St Asaph Street’s swag in the process. Nailing effortless hip, a chunky ol’ skool wooden bar exudes swank, with an electric blue-lit Cuban party scene shining through an expansive rum selection, while specially-brewedfor-the-venue Cuban Laga flows from militia-style machine gun beer taps, and tasty Cuban street food with a kick is the order of the day. www.thecuban.co.nz

Brigittes Restaurant & Bar A Merivale fixture for over 35 years, Brigittes started life as a small café that was one of the first in the city to offer proper espresso; now it has a new generation making it a regular haunt and as soon as you’re seated inside (bustling and cosy) or outside (sunny and sheltered) all becomes apparent. With all food made from scratch with precision their eggs bene – served up with bacon and velvety hollandaise on housemade toast – is the stuff of legends. Other institutions include the meltinglytender warm lamb fillet salad and their has-to-be-tasted-to-be-believed creamy cauliflower and spicy chorizo risotto, topped off with lashings of shaved parmesan. Round out the evening (or afternoon, but perhaps not breakfast) by ‘Irishing up’ an affogato, still made with proper espresso – here’s to a few more decades! www.brigittes.co.nz.

Creamy, delicate yet full-flavoured as you’d expect of the finest foie gras (sans the cruelty) the parfait coats the mouth, as it should, and is meltingly delicious. Cityscape caught up with Nespresso’s first New Zealand Culinary Ambassador and Michelin-starred maestro Josh Emmett. Tell us about your new gig ... I’ll be working with Nespresso on a number of initiatives across both their business and consumer coffee and machine ranges, as well as attending their international programmes to learn more about how Nespresso and coffee can enhance the gastro experience. The partnership is really about an alignment of values. A commitment to quality, sourcing and producing a consistently excellent product is an ethos we share. What’s the secret to a perfect coffee? I love my coffee! I have around six or seven a day, right up until about 10pm at night. The Arpeggio Grand Cru – the purple capsule – is my favourite and a great all-rounder. The perfect cup of coffee comes down to freshness, quality and a consistent taste profile. How important is coffee and gastronomy? There are very few restaurants that don’t serve coffee. It’s such an integral part of the dining experience for people to have coffee with their breakfast or at the end of a meal. And as a chef you always cook with coffee, particularly in desserts and sauces. What’s your favourite Christchurch haunt? My wife and I had a nice drink in the afternoon at Brick Farm last time we were down there and I have also been to King of Snake a few times which is always good.

gourmet goodies, catering, events & venues
We’d say that high teas are all the rage, but rage isn’t nearly civilised enough – better to say that high teas are the done thing right now. High-society ladies, tired of waiting between meals, coined the afternoon or ‘low tea’ as a socialising snack-fest, but calling the 2015 reboot ‘low tea’ when it’s all about silver service, glam frills, and pinkies-off-cups would be frightfully coarse. The highfalutin’ teas around the city offer the chance to take tea (and fancy sandwiches and sweet treats) in elegant style. Grab your monocle or bonnet and get into it: out in Lincoln, The Tea House offers the ‘Royal’ high tea treatment, also available with champagne; bubbles are an option with Stellar’s high tea as well, while The Grand Café’s version at Christchurch Casino offers ‘three tiers of treats’ (the tiered tray is compulsory at these occasions, naturally), Terra Viva’s own hot smoked salmon rests atop the blinis in their offering, and nothing could preface high tea more perfectly than a leisurely Sunday drive out to Oxford to find high tea specialists Pink Sugar – just don’t forget to book!
FIGGIN’ DELICIOUS Set your spring cheese boards and antipasto party platters to ‘stun’ with the addition of plump spiced figs. Poached in a heady herbed red-wine vinegar syrup, file Shirley’s Kitchen Spiced Figs under addictive and let their tangy goodness (perfect with cheese – especially blue and gorgonzola!) rock your next gathering. What’s more, the sensational syrup makes for an awesome glaze for roast pork or ham! www.shirleyskitchen.co.nz

Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar dumpling BAr
The Colombo, 363 Colombo Street, Sydenham 03 379 8377 144 Lichfield Street (Poplar Lane Corner), Central City (open late October) www.potsticker.co.nz Open: 7 days 9:30am – 5:30pm
It was a mad obsession that drove local boy Sam Hooper home with a mission to serve Cantabrians the best dumplings in the land. He set out to match the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods... and his team are nailing it. They’re now expanding their dumpling empire from the famous “eat on the go kiosk” at The Colombo to a second dine-in option at Poplar Lane, due to open late October. At the new spot you can experience the one thing better than dumplings... beer and dumplings! Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Pot Sticker Dumpling masters are from a variety of different provinces from all around China. They use techniques handed down to them from generation to generation using hand-made dumpling dough, locally sourced veges, herbs and free-range meat on a daily basis. If you’re crazy about eating the freshest dumplings in the land, then head down and watch them experimenting with new flavours in their “dumpling lab”.
