Sure it gets icy, but hey, we need all that cold so we can enjoy long days on the ski fields, fireside dining, cracking those heavy reds we’ve been stashing over the warmer months and piling on layers of the latest fashions. There’s an apt new name for the repaired and reopened restaurant in Riccarton House: Local. The restaurant focuses on seasonal and rustic food that’s clocked up low food miles, with many of the ingredients found in your tasty brunch or lunch having come directly from the popular Christchurch Farmers’ Market that’s held every Saturday morning in the historic manor’s grounds. You can also spot fresh herbs, salad greens and other seasonal produce used by the restaurant sprouting up from the five planter boxes outside the open working kitchen. It’s hard to get too much more local than that! It’s a red-and-blackout on the drinks menu too, with Wigram Beer, Pegasus Bay Wines, Hummingbird Coffee and the Aroha Elderflower range all on the list. Dine al fresco in the courtyard on sunny days, or cosy up in a heritage room with open fire and views over the Avon river. The hard-workin’, dumpling-slingin’ crew at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar have been faced with the good-kind of business problem – people languishing round The Colombo at lunchtimes, itching to get their delicious dumpling fix, but having to wait a while because of the sheer number of people clamouring for the flavourful goodness (and because handcrafted quality takes a bit of time, dunnit?). Good news for all of us dumpling fans though – a flash second location has opened up at 144 Lichfield Street (Poplar Lane corner), and – more good news yet – it won’t just be their delicious dumplings that make their way over the counter here, but beer and their delicious dumplings! The Iconic: Ballantynes

The city's shopping scene has seen plenty of changes, but through them all Ballantynes has remained the city’s upscale retail rock. Starting life in 1854 in the front room of a Cashel Street residence where locals could pick themselves up a sweet new hat, the business was purchased by John Ballantyne in 1872, and the name has stuck around. Today if you can’t get it at Ballantynes, chances are it’s not worth getting. But you don’t become a historic city fixture by just flogging stuff – the good people at Ballantynes go the extra mile with that old-skool concept of proper service. Hitting the slopes Winter is coming – and not just on GoT – which means ski season is almost upon us. Whether you’re a novice or a ski bunny extraordinaire, there’s a strict code of conduct on the ski field. Let us give you the lowdown! Firstly, share the chair; cutting in line or holding up the queue because you’re not about sharing a lift with strangers could set the catalyst for some downhill vengeance and see you in traction – everyone came to ski, so don’t be that person. Novices: take a lesson! Self-taught skiing can only end in tears (mostly yours), and a few pointers from your semi-pro bro doesn’t count. Best not stop in the middle of the slope, either – it's a serious dick move that puts you and other skiers in danger. Ski to the trail level – no burning up the beginners' run or meandering down the advanced; remember the skier in front has the right of way, and make sure (in addition to having fun) you lend a hand when needed. If someone hits some gnarly crud and wipes out, help dig them out – it’s like, totally skier’s code (probably), and might well score you an après drink in the bar (or car park party) after.

Give those reality cooking shows the flick and flex your own kitchen muscles with a cooking master class or five this winter, then wow your friends with a killer dinner party. Check out two of Canterbury’s best: gourmet goddess Jenny Garing of Ground Gourmet Essentials (www.ground.co.nz) will take you through the Food of Portugal (June 28), Pepper! (strawberry and black pepper ice cream, anyone? – July 26) and Burmese cuisine (August 23). Or head out to Tai Tapu’s exquisite Otahuna Lodge (www.otahuna.co.nz) and tap into chef Jimmy McIntyre’s (pictured) ‘potager to plate’ philosophy with his Sensational Seafood, using the freshest seafood available on the day (June 25 & 27), then learn the ropes of the trendiest meal with Brunch – The Art of Light Entertaining (August 27 & 29).

WELL PRESERVED Park your pint on the right glass-topped bar leaner at the Valley Inn Tavern in Heathcote and you may end up a with a little bit of vertigo, as yawning underneath (with a depth of 12 metres) is a brick well built in 1877. It was carefully looked after during the tavern’s complete rebuild post-quake, and was originally put to use supplying both the Heathcote Hotel and passing horses. In addition to preserving the historic well, the Tavern still holds the license that was originally issued to Birdsey’s Pub on the Bridle Path Road in 1862; it's probably fair to say they’ve got a bit of history under their belt when it comes to knowing how to pull a pint. www.valleyinntavern.co.nz

Christchurch – getting around the city is becoming easier with the arrival of a free (for trips under 30 minutes) public bike-share system, thanks to the crowdfunding enthusiasm for local entrepreneur Rob Henderson’s idea. The service puts CHCH in the same trendy club as the likes of New York, London and Melbourne (look at us go!), and starts in June with bike stations in Victoria, Gloucester and Tuam Streets, Re:START Mall and Worcester Boulevard, kicking off a two-year pilot for the project – ride on!

LONG HAUL FLIGHTS Planning on getting your migration on and flying north to warmer shores for the winter?

That excitement as you board the plane can start to wane after the 7th hour, so how do you cope when your sunny destination is still light years away? Read on …

If you’re in first class lollin’ about on a flatbed sipping French (read: real) champagne and wriggling your toes in your inflight Gucci sockettes, this ain’t for you – you’ll survive just fine. However, if you couldn’t wrangle an upgrade via air points (or promises of your firstborn) in order to break through the curtain class barrier into the promised land, you’re in for a slog – it’s not called long haul for nothing! But you can make it bearable. Choose your seat wisely; the window seat may be great for take-off and landing, but in the million hours in between, you'll come to loathe its cramped confines. You want the leg room of an aisle seat. Sure, drinking can knock you around at altitude, but that blessed escape of sleep can be elusive (thanks, wailing kid two rows back), so by all means have a couple – just ensure you hit the water too to stay relaxed AND hydrated. Treat the stewies like they’re the gods of your new found religion – these industry professionals control your flow of booze and food and you’ll be needing both. There’s an amazing shift in the fashion world for the upcoming spring/ summer seasons; we are becoming more daring, naughty and nice all in the same outfit, and the design world is pushing our inner femininity to the extreme. Expect natural fibres, suede, boho North American, rock chick, festival, feathers, leather/shear fabrics, metallics (blues to silver), sexy, combat, 1970s mod, trench coats, cotton, delicate embroideries and silks. bolder than ever – hats are in, shoes are extremely boho with loads of lace ups and peep holes, and look for warrior sandals and, dare I say, trainers. The multi-award winning salon that was only recently named the NZ Hair Industry Training Organisation’s Training Salon of the year houses a talented, creative team of professional stylists, helmed by Jacqui Victor. Her tips for the seasons ahead: “We are being invaded by the Shag! Remember the likes of Joan Jett? Its back! Very rock chic, very boho and very festival hair – all rolled into one! Blondes go rock chick: icy blonde ends with deep natural roots. Very rock-inspired, yet totally wearable, on-trend colour. Vibrant reds are also ripping up the stages, with deep roots again very wearable and on trend.”

At long-established Beckenham salon Scissortrix, experience joins first-class products in modern surrounds. Director Merilyn Kane believes we should “Expect to see lots of texture, backcombed updos that have never been so windproof before, crimped sections for hair ups and dos for volume and style. Lots of sea salt spray for style and texture – basically the 70s are back! Ponytails are still in, worn crimped, sleek or messed up. There’ll be lots of root lift – wild or sophisticated – partings will be low to the side or centred, lots of twists, knots, and buns, and long hair with a natural finish with movement or a soft wave."

Headspace It’s all about attention to detail at Niq James' chic

inner-city salon Headspace. He predicts “Upcoming trends include new-look baby-lights, where a few strands of hair are lightened for a softer sun-kissed look. Ombré is still popular, but with some lighter strands though the mid lengths to ends to soften the look. If you are over the highlighted look, don't worry – we'll be seeing monochromatic colours in rich browns, warm blondes and bold reds; warm and cool are making a comeback too. Team these colours up with a new style. Short cropped looks are still big, while longer layered cuts get the glamour treatment from the new GHD curve range, or spritz with sea salt spray for a more casual, textured look. Don’t forget the boys; men’s undercuts are big with extremes in length, shaved sides with swept-back length on top. The beard is making a big comeback – not since the 1970s have we seen the beard so popular. The fashion-savvy Kiwi bloke is fast to follow this international trend, with hair and beard grooming products becoming widely available.”

Cityscape talks to some of the city’s brewing craftspeople about the reasons for the craft beer boom, their motivations, and a few of their drops to watch out for. Jumped on the craft beer/boutique beer appreciation train yet? With the number of craft breweries in the country increasing from just 3 around 1980 to closer to 80 today, it’s fair to say our beer horizons have massively expanded, and with increasing numbers of bustling brew-pubs, beer-focussed bars/ cafes/restaurants, boutique beer stores and local craft breweries popping up, Christchurch might just be getting ideas about giving Wellington and Nelson run for their money in the contest to be the nation’s craft beer capital. Local brewers all agree that New Zealand is part of a worldwide surge of interest in craft beer at present, perhaps spurred on in particular locally by the sense that there’s a bit of catching up to do. “I think the main driver is the fact that New Zealand is rediscovering the huge range of styles and flavours that beer has to offer. We no longer think of beer as just the brown fizzy stuff that monopolised the local

market in the past” says Three Boys’ Ralph Bungard. Raindog Brewing Co’s Sean Harris concurs, “There’s a world of styles and flavours of beers that craft brewers and consumers are rediscovering that was lost to the corporate pale bland lagers that took over the world in the last century.” The city’s craft brewers are excited to lead the movement back to variety and quality for the nation’s favourite tipple. “Beer choice in New Zealand has for so long been limited; we are finally enjoying the variety of flavours and styles the rest of the world has been enjoying for so long” says Golden Eagle Brewery’s David Gaughan. Part of the advantage that craft brewers have is agility, with smaller-scale logistics making it easier to turn out special or seasonal brews and keep the variety that consumers are after coming. “Variety is my inspiration; I love bringing the flavours of the world into my beers and putting my own

little twist on the official styles” says David. It’s a rare craft brewer that doesn’t have one secret or seasonal project on the go somewhere. Winter at Three Boys is all about Oyster Stout “…which happens to be New Zealand’s most awarded beer!” Ralph notes proudly. “But we are just in the process of brewing our Red Ale and our Smoked Ale again; they will be great over winter.” Golden Eagle also has a seasonal brew in the pipeline, as David reveals: “We are doing a series of beers termed the 'Four Saisons'. We release our winter variety in July, called Marilyn – an 8.5% dark beer spiced with rum and anise.” At Raindog, it’s not a case of a new brew this winter, but rather some previous hard work now really starting to hit its stride. “My Singularity Imperial Stout has had close to a year of cellaring now and is starting to taste great!” Sean says, bidding us to keep an eye out for 500ml bottles of the brew in question over the colder months. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

Former engineer David Gaughan followed his true passion by creating Golden Eagle brewery in 2010. Golden Eagle’s beers have been making a name for themselves since the get-go, with the likes of The Bitter End (referred to as the most authentic English Bitter in New Zealand), the Big Yank American IPA (a dark, hoppy IPA at 7.5%) and the blacker-than-black Coalface Stout picking up fans both locally and nationally.

Family-owned Three Boys Brewery have made a name for themselves with the personal attention they pay to each of their small-scale brews, carefully mothering each batch until their unfiltered, unpasteurised beer leaves their Ferry Road operation. POLENTA FRIES Shopping list For the fries: 700ml chicken stock 250gm polenta – fine (not quick cook) 40gm parmesan (good quality like Parmigiano-Reggiano) Salt and fresh ground black pepper Fresh rosemary (finely chopped) Greaseproof baking paper, flat baking tray, oil For the Rosemary Garlic Salt: 1 tsp fresh rosemary (chopped) 1 tsp garlic flakes (lightly crushed), 50gm flaky sea salt

Making It Happen Bring chicken stock to the boil in a medium saucepan, then add polenta, stirring rapidly to remove lumps, and cook out for 2–3 minutes to form a smooth, firm paste. Remove from the heat and stir through the parmesan, salt, pepper and rosemary. Line a baking tray with enough paper to cover both the bottom and fold over the top. Pour the mix onto the baking tray and spread with a spatula to form a 20mm thick base, then fold excess baking paper over top of mix and use a tray or board to press the mix. Refrigerate until cool, then carefully turn out onto a chopping board, remove paper and slice into desired shape. Preheat a deep fryer to 185C° and fry until crispy and golden. Mix Rosemary Garlic Salt ingredients together and store in an airtight container. Season with Rosemary Garlic Salt, grated parmesan cheese and aioli (optional). www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

I’ve been lucky enough to work with a range of inspiring winemakers around the world. Taking the reins at Waipara Hills has given me the opportunity to make wines that I love. The best thing about your job? Every day I essentially get to play with flavours and aromatics in an attempt to make the best tasting drink I can come up with. It’s like a playground for people that are slightly obsessive about finding balance and perfection! How can we enjoy wine even more? Don’t over chill your white wines! A refreshing cold drink can be great on a hot day, but don’t be surprised when it doesn’t taste of anything much if it’s ice cold. Tell us about the best wine you ever tasted. The champagne that I opened the night that my wife said that she’d marry me tasted pretty damn good! Brag files: We’ve been lucky enough to get a gold recently at the London Sommeliers Awards for our 2014 Sauvignon Blanc, as well as receiving the award for top Riesling in Cuisine for our 2014 Riesling. What’s next for Waipara Hills? We’ve just finished the 2015 harvest season and I am excited about the depth of flavour and richness of this season’s wines – so they’ll be some to look for. Also, UB40 will be doing one show in the South Island next year – and we will be holding that at Waipara Hills!

Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Norman, the Shanghai dumpling master, hand-makes the dumpling dough, chops all the locally sourced veges, herbs and free-range meat on a daily basis using techniques learned through his 30 years of dumpling-making. Even the Chinese punch is made using a recipe passed down from generation to generation. We Kiwis are naturally outdoorsy people. We love to spend our days sitting in the sun, socialising outdoors and impressing friends with our BBQ skills. Unlike our Aussie neighbours, we seldom reach for the air-con remote to cool our houses, instead opening windows and doors to create a cross breeze. However, our climate – particularly here in the South – doesn’t always cooperate. Warm days are often compromised by gusty winds attacking us from all directions. There are a number of simple fundamental principles that we consider when designing a new house to not only aid in functionality, but also comfort and energy efficiency. Designing for the sun is imperative. Orientating the house and positioning glazing towards the north and west helps capture heat throughout the day that, when paired with a thermal mass such as a concrete floor slab, will slowly release internally as the evening cools. Assessing the exposure of a site allows us to create suitable external courtyards that offer multiple options to escape prevailing winds. Cutting courtyards into the house form can also offer a sense of intimacy externally in the way the surrounding walls encapsulate and protect. Incorporating generous openings either side of a space will not only help with cross ventilation, but will also allow continual access to outdoor spaces away from winds. The Cityscape lowdown on excitement capital Buenos Aires. The Romans have gone and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that it is finally time for them to set off to find their son. They know they will face many hazards, but can’t foresee how their journey will reveal to them their love for each other, nor that they will be joined by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and a knight – each of them, like Axl and Beatrice, lost in some way to his own past. Savage, mysterious, and always moving, Kazuo Ishiguro’s first novel in a decade tells a luminous story about the act of forgetting and the power of memory. RRP $37.

2 WATCH The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. 8 years in the making and hot on the heels of Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises, Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata’s adaptation of an old Japanese folktale is an equally remarkable farewell film by another master of Japanese animation. Beautifully animated in a hand-drawn style, the film takes us into a timeless world where a humble bamboo cutter finds a miniature, doll-like princess tucked inside a bamboo shoot. He shares the discovery with his wife, but both are shocked when the little princess is suddenly transformed into a baby. The couple adopt the child as their own and decide to raise the girl to be a proper princess.

3 LISTEN Drylands, Mel Parsons. Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. This is Mel Parsons’ third album, and in my opinion her best yet. You may have been lucky enough to have seen one of her shows on her recent national tour, which perfectly captured Drylands beautiful folk sound and Parsons’ stunning vocals. Setting a lovely mood, Drylands features guest musicians including Ron Sexsmith and Anika Moa, which adds a depth and consistency that is absorbing. Highlights on the album include ‘Far Away’, ‘Driving Man’ and ‘Don’t Wait’, but the great thing is that Parsons and her band have a great connection and deliver a strong, well rounded album – a Kiwi classic!

Suburban Nightmare They’re heeeere … the classic Poltergeist catchphrase is terrifying a new generation courtesy of Sam Raimi (Spiderman, The Evil Dead), once again giving new meaning to the words ‘suburban hell’ after the youngest member of the Freeling family gets sucked into the TV by disenfranchised spirits. Stepping into the pot-smoking parental roles are Sam Rockwell (Conviction) and Rosemarie DeWitt (United States of Tara). We’re guessing DeWitt would have insisted on fake skeletons for the remake’s pool scene – unlucky predecessor JoBeth Williams took method acting to new levels, doing time with real human bones in the muddy water.

Bodacious Bond babe Gemma Arterton has it all: looks, talent, a killer singing voice and, when she was born, two extra fingers (!). Arterton describes her polydactyly as her “little oddity that I’m really proud of.” “People are really interested but repulsed at the same time,” she’s said of the dual digits that formerly neighboured her pinkies. And the quirks don’t end there; she was also born with a crumpled ear. “I was born with a lot of deformities,” the former Esquire Woman of the Year says of her rough start.

Adding its name to the list of companies celebrating the rebirth of the Isaac Theatre Royal, the New Zealand Opera and director Kate Cherry tackle Puccini’s heart-rending Madama Butterfly there in July. The timeless story of hope, honour, fidelity and love has been hailed as one of the most meaningful, moving experiences one can have in a theatre, and the beautiful setting of the Theatre Royal is sure to be a fitting home to this lavish production and its sumptuous costumes and scenery. The Christchurch buildings getting a second (or third, or fourth!) life.

We’re all thinking ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ – right? But it’s hard to compete with certain local entrepreneurs and business owners who have taken this line of thinking to a macro scale by repurposing and rejuvenating some of the city’s old buildings. With local architectural history taking a bit of a thrashing in recent years, it’s good to see there are still plenty of places you can go in the city to inject a bit of old-fashioned character and charm into your day. Qb Studios Cityscape’s new HQ, Qb Studios – once a nondescript 80s warehouse facility and then a mechanic’s workshop – has recently been gussied up good and proper, with the building’s original shell now housing modern modular office units that are home to a range of funky businesses. There's also a buzzing café and a communal/ collaborative space with a retro feel that doubles as a mini art-gallery. Hello Sunday Hello Sunday’s unassuming wooden building in Sydenham is a heritage award finalist that actually dates all the

way back to the 1870s, when it was erected in the central city as an early post office. When the mail moved out, the building shifted to Sydenham for a new life as a Sunday school – a backstory you can spot today in the acclaimed café’s antique pews. Pomeroy’s Old Brewery Inn This grand old lady of hospitality in Kilmore Street occupies two double-storey brick buildings that were once part of Ward’s Brewery, dating back to 1854. Brewery operations onsite halted in 1955, but then Pomeroy’s opened in 2004, much to the joy of lovers of good beer and good pub food. The Tannery The Woolston retail boutique and entertainment hub is housed inside buildings originally built as part of the eponymous tannery, which dates back to about 1874, and the aesthetics of its Victorian era orgins have been gloriously embraced in its makeover. XCHC The Exchange’s (XCHC) creative hub in Wilson's Road was formerly occupied by a pickle and salami factory, built in 1950.

The building also housed an auto parts business before its recent transformation into a flexible production and showcase space. The Court Theatre The relocated Court's nickname – ‘The Shed’ – amusingly downplays the scale of the 3,200 square metre former grain store that now houses the theatre, while the trappings of the building’s former life add a touch of industrial chic to the foyer. Hotel Montreal It’s only been a slight change in usage post-quakes for the familiar white building in Montreal Street – from residential apartments to hotel – but the reno has been revolutionary, with the boutique hotel showcasing superb design and decadent furnishings. Jailhouse Backpackers People entering this building these days want to stay; the same probably couldn’t be said of potential guests when it opened as a prison in 1874. The pokey continued in its role for 125 years before becoming an award-winning accommodation provider.
