Editor’s note

Ahhh, winter’s brisk embrace. Sure it gets icy, but hey, we need all that cold so we can enjoy long days on the ski fields, fireside dining, cracking those heavy reds we’ve been stashing over the warmer months and piling on layers of the latest fashions. Things are getting pretty frosty in our Bumper Winter Issue too as we profile the latest and coming spring/summer fashions, meet the city’s beer barons, and welcome both a regular killer recipe from Dragons Den Social Lounge’s chef extraordinare Andrew Brown and property buying and selling tips from Harcourts Gold guru Mary Turnbull – along with everything Cityscapecentric to keep you in the know.

Local Hero

There’s an apt new name for the repaired and reopened restaurant in Riccarton House: Local. The restaurant focuses on seasonal and rustic food that’s clocked up low food miles, with many of the ingredients found in your tasty brunch or lunch having come directly from the popular Christchurch Farmers’ Market that’s held every Saturday morning in the historic manor’s grounds. You can also spot fresh herbs, salad greens and other seasonal produce used by the restaurant sprouting up from the five planter boxes outside the open working kitchen. It’s hard to get too much more local than that! It’s a red-and-blackout on the drinks menu too, with Wigram Beer, Pegasus Bay Wines, Hummingbird Coffee and the Aroha Elderflower range all on the list. Dine al fresco in the courtyard on sunny days, or cosy up in a heritage room with open fire and views over the Avon river. Local. at Riccarton House, open Wed - Fri 10am –3pm, Sat/Sun 9am – 4pm. www.localatriccartonhouse.co.nz

The hard-workin’, dumpling-slingin’ crew at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar have been faced with the good-kind of business problem – people languishing round The Colombo at lunchtimes, itching to get their delicious dumpling fix, but having to wait a while because of the sheer number of people clamouring for the flavourful goodness (and because handcrafted quality takes a bit of time, dunnit?). Good news for all of us dumpling fans though – a flash second location has opened up at 144 Lichfield Street (Poplar Lane corner), and – more good news yet – it won’t just be their delicious dumplings that make their way over the counter here, but beer and their delicious dumplings! Seriously – let us at it. @cityscapemagazine_chch,

The Iconic: Ballantynes

The city's shopping scene has seen plenty of changes, but through them all Ballantynes has remained the city’s upscale retail rock. Starting life in 1854 in the front room of a Cashel Street residence where locals could pick themselves up a sweet new hat, the business was purchased by John Ballantyne in 1872, and the name has stuck around. Today if you can’t get it at Ballantynes, chances are it’s not worth getting. But you don’t become a historic city fixture by just flogging stuff – the good people at Ballantynes go the extra mile with that old-skool concept of proper service. John would be proud. www.ballantynes.co.nz

urban etiquette

Hitting the slopes Winter is coming – and not just on GoT – which means ski season is almost upon us. Whether you’re a novice or a ski bunny extraordinaire, there’s a strict code of conduct on the ski field. Let us give you the lowdown! Firstly, share the chair; cutting in line or holding up the queue because you’re not about sharing a lift with strangers could set the catalyst for some downhill vengeance and see you in traction – everyone came to ski, so don’t be that person. Novices: take a lesson! Self-taught skiing can only end in tears (mostly yours), and a few pointers from your semi-pro bro doesn’t count. Best not stop in the middle of the slope, either – it's a serious dick move that puts you and other skiers in danger. Ski to the trail level – no burning up the beginners' run or meandering down the advanced; remember the skier in front has the right of way, and make sure (in addition to having fun) you lend a hand when needed. If someone hits some gnarly crud and wipes out, help dig them out – it’s like, totally skier’s code (probably), and might well score you an après drink in the bar (or car park party) after.

LET’S COOK

Give those reality cooking shows the flick and flex your own kitchen muscles with a cooking master class or five this winter, then wow your friends with a killer dinner party. Check out two of Canterbury’s best: gourmet goddess Jenny Garing of Ground Gourmet Essentials (www.ground.co.nz) will take you through the Food of Portugal (June 28), Pepper! (strawberry and black pepper ice cream, anyone? – July 26) and Burmese cuisine (August 23). Or head out to Tai Tapu’s exquisite Otahuna Lodge (www.otahuna.co.nz) and tap into chef Jimmy McIntyre’s (pictured) ‘potager to plate’ philosophy with his Sensational Seafood, using the freshest seafood available on the day (June 25 & 27), then learn the ropes of the trendiest meal with Brunch – The Art of Light Entertaining (August 27 & 29).

WELL PRESERVED Park your pint on the right glass-topped bar leaner at the Valley Inn Tavern in Heathcote and you may end up a with a little bit of vertigo, as yawning underneath (with a depth of 12 metres) is a brick well built in 1877. It was carefully looked after during the tavern’s complete rebuild post-quake, and was originally put to use supplying both the Heathcote Hotel and passing horses. In addition to preserving the historic well, the Tavern still holds the license that was originally issued to Birdsey’s Pub on the Bridle Path Road in 1862; it's probably fair to say they’ve got a bit of history under their belt when it comes to knowing how to pull a pint. www.valleyinntavern.co.nz

HOME GROWN: BOTANICAL BEAUTY Cityscape catches up with Brigit Blair on the 20th anniversary of Linden Leaves.

How did you get into the natural beauty business? I began in a very small way, focussed on natural ingredients that could be used daily by 2 of my children who had the daily challenge of dealing with severely itchy, raw, inflamed, infected and sensitive skin. How would you describe the past 20 years with Linden Leaves? It has pretty much been my life and my passion, a time filled with gaining knowledge and insight and building a team of talented and dedicated people around me with some success. What are the requirements of your ingredients? Our skincare range is 100% natural and NATRUE certified, as I believe the facial skin is the most delicate and visual and the products are function-specific to give the utmost protection. Other general body care products in larger sizes range from 98.5% natural to a blend of natural and gentle synthetic ingredients. Career highlight? Receiving the Order of Merit, but my family and team are the force behind the scene. The one Linden Leaves product you can’t live without? Oil – both our unique handmade body oils with beautiful freeze-dried botanicals and our miraculous facial oil. What’s your favourite beauty tip? Less is more – wellcared for, nourished skin looks beautiful without much embellishment. What’s next for Linden Leaves? We are releasing a luxurious Gold range, based on the attributes of ancient grains, to celebrate 20 years. It marks the milestone appropriately, and is unique with every product containing 23kt gold leaf. Beauty is … about confidence, authenticity, positivity, kindness and a sense of wellbeing.

RETRO-A-GO-GO Looking to add some old skool swank and swag to your pad Mad Men style? Then look no further than Mr Mod’s Mid-Century Furniture & Design Show (180 Durham Street). Running to June 13, it offers 350 square metres of drop-dead stylish imported original Scandinavian, European and American design spanning the 1950s – 70s. Legendary designers on show include Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl, Borge Mogensen, Isamu Noguchi, Tobia Scarpa, Bruno Mathsson and Arne Jacobsen. www.mrmod.co.nz

SURVIVAL GUIDE

LONG HAUL FLIGHTS Planning on getting your migration on and flying north to warmer shores for the winter?

That excitement as you board the plane can start to wane after the 7th hour, so how do you cope when your sunny destination is still light years away? Read on …

If you’re in first class lollin’ about on a flatbed sipping French (read: real) champagne and wriggling your toes in your inflight Gucci sockettes, this ain’t for you – you’ll survive just fine. However, if you couldn’t wrangle an upgrade via air points (or promises of your firstborn) in order to break through the curtain class barrier into the promised land, you’re in for a slog – it’s not called long haul for nothing! But you can make it bearable. Choose your seat wisely; the window seat may be great for take-off and landing, but in the million hours in between, you'll come to loathe its cramped confines. You want the leg room of an aisle seat. Sure, drinking can knock you around at altitude, but that blessed escape of sleep can be elusive (thanks, wailing kid two rows back), so by all means have a couple – just ensure you hit the water too to stay relaxed AND hydrated. Treat the stewies like they’re the gods of your new found religion – these industry professionals control your flow of booze and food and you’ll be needing both. Lastly, binge-watch every TV show and movie you've missed at ground level and you’ll be passing out before you know it. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

ON TREND

Cityscape taps the experts to find out what's going to be hot in fashion, hair, and beauty.

fashion on the fly With Styling by Jacqui Victor

There’s an amazing shift in the fashion world for the upcoming spring/ summer seasons; we are becoming more daring, naughty and nice all in the same outfit, and the design world is pushing our inner femininity to the extreme. Expect natural fibres, suede, boho North American, rock chick, festival, feathers, leather/shear fabrics, metallics (blues to silver), sexy, combat, 1970s mod, trench coats, cotton, delicate embroideries and silks. Accessories are bigger and

bolder than ever – hats are in, shoes are extremely boho with loads of lace ups and peep holes, and look for warrior sandals and, dare I say, trainers. It’s about trapping something wild and expressing the inner warrior. Femininity is very much present with clean crisp whites, cottons and silks. Then there’s denim – it's flooding the European catwalks and there’s huge contrasts in textures, patterns, colour and eras. So drag out your old denim and reinvent it, adding that extra special touch of leather, lace and cotton to bring it back to today. www.stylingbyjacquivictor.co.nz

PONCHO REVIVAL

Scorching the streets of Europe, the latest poncho incarnation riffs on the cape and runs the gamut from street Aztec prints to lux glam super soft possum and merino blends. Forgiving to most body shapes, comfy and cosy, they’re the perfect accessory – pop over your yoga gear or wear out in the evening over your fave dress. RRP $98 www.themohairstore.co.nz

ACCENTS OF THE 70’S  Local fashion and bridal designer Ingrid Brook says to look out for distracting wider off the shoulder designs in print chiffons and luxurious silks this spring/summer. Peasant blouses teamed with full flirty skirts, sleek long dresses and long shorts teamed with a long duster coat are all trending. For cocktail and evening gowns, expect to see plenty of embellished collars, motifs and belts. Blouse (RRP $329), Skirt (RRP $389) and Hairpiece (RRP $265)

BLING IT ON Spring and summer jewellery at Filigree Fine Jewels will see the emphasis being placed on pretty pastels and dainty details, accentuating the delicate elements that make an impression following the harsh winter, says Vanessa Stowers. Rutile drop 9ct Yellow Gold Pendant with leaf (RRP $1,340), Marquise and Round Brilliant Diamond Platinum Ring (RRP $3,050)

You'll want to look like your best you when you're wearing all these new threads, so drop into Beauty at the Tannery (Woolston), Lotus at Siam Thai Day Spa (Cashmere), and Merivales hair & beauty (merivale) to ensure you're looking radiant and nicely relaxed after putting all those shopping miles! 22

HAIR TODAY TOMORROW  True Grit

The multi-award winning salon that was only recently named the NZ Hair Industry Training Organisation’s Training Salon of the year houses a talented, creative team of professional stylists, helmed by Jacqui Victor. Her tips for the seasons ahead: “We are being invaded by the Shag! Remember the likes of Joan Jett? Its back! Very rock chic, very boho and very festival hair – all rolled into one! Blondes go rock chick: icy blonde ends with deep natural roots. Very rock-inspired, yet totally wearable, on-trend colour. Vibrant reds are also ripping up the stages, with deep roots again very wearable and on trend.”

Scissortrix

At long-established Beckenham salon Scissortrix, experience joins first-class products in modern surrounds. Director Merilyn Kane believes we should “Expect to see lots of texture, backcombed updos that have never been so windproof before, crimped sections for hair ups and dos for volume and style. Lots of sea salt spray for style and texture – basically the 70s are back! Ponytails are still in, worn crimped, sleek or messed up. There’ll be lots of root lift – wild or sophisticated – partings will be low to the side or centred, lots of twists, knots, and buns, and long hair with a natural finish with movement or a soft wave."

Headspace It’s all about attention to detail at Niq James' chic

inner-city salon Headspace. He predicts “Upcoming trends include new-look baby-lights, where a few strands of hair are lightened for a softer sun-kissed look. Ombré is still popular, but with some lighter strands though the mid lengths to ends to soften the look. If you are over the highlighted look, don't worry – we'll be seeing monochromatic colours in rich browns, warm blondes and bold reds; warm and cool are making a comeback too. Team these colours up with a new style. Short cropped looks are still big, while longer layered cuts get the glamour treatment from the new GHD curve range, or spritz with sea salt spray for a more casual, textured look. Don’t forget the boys; men’s undercuts are big with extremes in length, shaved sides with swept-back length on top. The beard is making a big comeback – not since the 1970s have we seen the beard so popular. The fashion-savvy Kiwi bloke is fast to follow this international trend, with hair and beard grooming products becoming widely available.”

the face of spring With Kristen Stewart of Kristen Stewart School of Make-up. This Spring look out for glossy lips, perfect shiny or bronzed skin, the ‘no make-up’ look, either soft pastels or some seriously smoky eyes, striking red lips or the brilliance of some other off-the-hook colour, and to finish it off, fine liner. For the perfect skin, with a very light looking see-through base, I recommend M.A.C Face and Body Foundation. This is a light foundation that has a buildable coverage and a flawless, natural satin-shine finish. We are falling back in love with eye products! So when prepping your face with amazing moisturisers and primers, do not forget to do this to your eyes, as this will help keep your eye make-up looking fresh and vibrant all day long. My absolute favourite mascara M.A.C Haute & Naughty Lash is a two-in-one mascara that lets you have either a very naturallooking lash or full on drama. We haven’t missed eye liner this year – whether it’s a clean and slightly flicked, or exaggeratedly winged out, it’s a must. Whether you are going to go for the bare minimum look or adding a pop of colour, make sure you have fun and experiment to see what works best for you. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

on the hops

Cityscape talks to some of the city’s brewing craftspeople about the reasons for the craft beer boom, their motivations, and a few of their drops to watch out for. Jumped on the craft beer/boutique beer appreciation train yet? With the number of craft breweries in the country increasing from just 3 around 1980 to closer to 80 today, it’s fair to say our beer horizons have massively expanded, and with increasing numbers of bustling brew-pubs, beer-focussed bars/ cafes/restaurants, boutique beer stores and local craft breweries popping up, Christchurch might just be getting ideas about giving Wellington and Nelson run for their money in the contest to be the nation’s craft beer capital. Local brewers all agree that New Zealand is part of a worldwide surge of interest in craft beer at present, perhaps spurred on in particular locally by the sense that there’s a bit of catching up to do. “I think the main driver is the fact that New Zealand is rediscovering the huge range of styles and flavours that beer has to offer. We no longer think of beer as just the brown fizzy stuff that monopolised the local

market in the past” says Three Boys’ Ralph Bungard. Raindog Brewing Co’s Sean Harris concurs, “There’s a world of styles and flavours of beers that craft brewers and consumers are rediscovering that was lost to the corporate pale bland lagers that took over the world in the last century.” The city’s craft brewers are excited to lead the movement back to variety and quality for the nation’s favourite tipple. “Beer choice in New Zealand has for so long been limited; we are finally enjoying the variety of flavours and styles the rest of the world has been enjoying for so long” says Golden Eagle Brewery’s David Gaughan. Part of the advantage that craft brewers have is agility, with smaller-scale logistics making it easier to turn out special or seasonal brews and keep the variety that consumers are after coming. “Variety is my inspiration; I love bringing the flavours of the world into my beers and putting my own

little twist on the official styles” says David. It’s a rare craft brewer that doesn’t have one secret or seasonal project on the go somewhere. Winter at Three Boys is all about Oyster Stout “…which happens to be New Zealand’s most awarded beer!” Ralph notes proudly. “But we are just in the process of brewing our Red Ale and our Smoked Ale again; they will be great over winter.” Golden Eagle also has a seasonal brew in the pipeline, as David reveals: “We are doing a series of beers termed the 'Four Saisons'. We release our winter variety in July, called Marilyn – an 8.5% dark beer spiced with rum and anise.” At Raindog, it’s not a case of a new brew this winter, but rather some previous hard work now really starting to hit its stride. “My Singularity Imperial Stout has had close to a year of cellaring now and is starting to taste great!” Sean says, bidding us to keep an eye out for 500ml bottles of the brew in question over the colder months. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

Meet the Makers

Golden Eagle Brewery

Three Boys

Raindogs Brewing Co.

Former engineer David Gaughan followed his true passion by creating Golden Eagle brewery in 2010. Golden Eagle’s beers have been making a name for themselves since the get-go, with the likes of The Bitter End (referred to as the most authentic English Bitter in New Zealand), the Big Yank American IPA (a dark, hoppy IPA at 7.5%) and the blacker-than-black Coalface Stout picking up fans both locally and nationally.

Family-owned Three Boys Brewery have made a name for themselves with the personal attention they pay to each of their small-scale brews, carefully mothering each batch until their unfiltered, unpasteurised beer leaves their Ferry Road operation. The goal is a simple one: turning out the best possible beer with the finest possible taste. It’s an approach that’s seen them rack up awards aplenty, and demand for their liquid gold sees it exported as far as the UK.

Raindogs Brewing Co sneak bold and tasty beers out of their shared space with Golden Eagle Brewery on Riccarton Road. Local ingredients are used in the creation of brews like the Apothecary Amber, brewed with Kiwi hops, and the style-bending (and grammatically apt) Oxymoron Black IPA, a hoppy, drinkable IPA-like beer that is nonetheless black as a stout or porter (drink with your eyes closed to minimise confusion!).

PERFECT MATCHES Once almost the exclusive domain of wine enthusiasts, food matching is now being taken seriously as a discipline for beer too (anything wine can do, beer can do as well!). Here are a few handy rules of thumb when making your order or whipping up the perfect food-and-beer combo yourself at home: Lager Asian, BBQ, Beef, Cheese, Fish, Indian, Italian, Lamb, Mexican, Pork & Ham, Poultry, Seafood, Spicy NZ Draught BBQ, Beef, Game Meat, Lamb, Pork & Ham Pale Ale BBQ, Beef, Cheese, Dessert, Fish, Game Meat, Indian, Italian, Lamb, Pork & Ham, Poultry, Seafood Pilsner Asian, BBQ, Cheese, Fish, Indian, Italian, Lamb, Mexican, Pork & Ham, Poultry, Spicy Wheat Asian, Cheese, Dessert, Fish, Seafood Dark Beer BBQ, Beef, Cheese, Dessert, Game Meat, Pork & Ham, Seafood 30

Making It Happen Bring chicken stock to the boil in a medium saucepan, then add polenta, stirring rapidly to remove lumps, and cook out for 2–3 minutes to form a smooth, firm paste. Remove from the heat and stir through the parmesan, salt, pepper and rosemary. Line a baking tray with enough paper to cover both the bottom and fold over the top. Pour the mix onto the baking tray and spread with a spatula to form a 20mm thick base, then fold excess baking paper over top of mix and use a tray or board to press the mix. Refrigerate until cool, then carefully turn out onto a chopping board, remove paper and slice into desired shape. Preheat a deep fryer to 185C° and fry until crispy and golden. Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar dumpling BAr

The Colombo, 363 Colombo Street, Sydenham 03 379 8377 144 Lichfield Street (Poplar Lane Corner), Central City www.potsticker.co.nz Open: 7 days 9:30am – 5:30pm (or until sold out)

It was a mad obsession that drove local boy Sam Hooper back to Christchurch with a mission to serve Cantabrians the best dumplings in the land. He set out to match the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods... and his team are nailing it. A year on and they have expanded their dumpling empire from the famous “eat on the go kiosk” at The Colombo to a second dine-in option at Poplar Lane. At the new hot spot you can experience the one thing better than dumplings... beer and dumplings. Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Norman, the Shanghai dumpling master, hand-makes the dumpling dough, chops all the locally sourced veges, herbs and free-range meat on a daily basis using techniques learned through his 30 years of dumpling-making. Even the Chinese punch is made using a recipe passed down from generation to generation. If you’re crazy about eating the freshest dumplings in the land, then head down and watch them experimenting with new flavours in their “dumpling lab”.

Christchurch Here & Now

We Kiwis are naturally outdoorsy people. We love to spend our days sitting in the sun, socialising outdoors and impressing friends with our BBQ skills. Unlike our Aussie neighbours, we seldom reach for the air-con remote to cool our houses, instead opening windows and doors to create a cross breeze. However, our climate – particularly here in the South – doesn’t always cooperate. Warm days are often compromised by gusty winds attacking us from all directions. There are a number of simple fundamental principles that we consider when designing a new house to not only aid in functionality, but also comfort and energy efficiency. Designing for the sun is imperative. Orientating the house and positioning glazing towards the north and west helps capture heat throughout the day that, when paired with a thermal mass such as a concrete floor slab, will slowly release internally as the evening cools. Assessing the exposure of a site allows us to create suitable external courtyards that offer multiple options to escape prevailing winds. Cutting courtyards into the house form can also offer a sense of intimacy externally in the way the surrounding walls encapsulate and protect. Incorporating generous openings either side of a space will not only help with cross ventilation, but will also allow continual access to outdoor spaces away from winds. Finally, a clever external shading treatment gives us useable outdoor space all year round. www.colabarch.co.nz

REFLECTING STYLE WELLBEING

The Good Life WITH DR LIBBY

As winter approaches you can almost feel people’s mood start to shift. You start to hear people saying, “it’s too cold, it’s too dark, I hate winter”, and before winter has even really begun, you start to feel worn down. Here are a few simple ways to support your energy and maintain your glow over the cooler months: Don’t use sugar as a comfort In the cooler weather there is naturally a move to more warming and comforting foods. Most people associate home baking with comfort, and in the cooler weather there is a tendency to bake more puddings or crumbles. If there’s one thing that can steal someone’s shine, it’s most definitely consuming too much sugar. Really address whether your food choices are about nourishing your body or nourishing your soul, and try some of the delicious wholefood alternatives to traditional winter recipes. Hydrate The body is largely made up of water, and consuming enough is essential for our body to work at its best. One of the best ways to support yourself, your health, and your skin is to drink water throughout the day. In the cooler months, warming herbal teas can be a great alternative and also add to your total intake of water for the day. Keep moving Change up your winter movement to include lower impact activities that support the slower and restorative pace of winter. Yoga, stretching and walking are great ways to keep moving. Walking outside, even for five minutes, will help to invigorate the mind, body and soul. Going outside and exposing yourself to the crisp winter air and natural light will help to lift your mood, energy, and overall feeling of well-being. Keep eating fresh produce Eat with the seasons and embrace all of the beautiful, colourful produce in season – broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini, beetroot and pumpkin to name a few. Your body will love you for it. Embrace winter with gratitude Instead of getting yourself in a negative mindset about winter, turn this around and consider everything there is to appreciate this time of year. Imagine if you lived in a country that was always hot – this might be a dream for some of you, but others would miss the unique winter activities, such as skiing or snowboarding, cuddling up under a blanket, enjoying nourishing warm foods and drinks or simply just having a bit more time to yourself for reflection. www.drlibby.com

With large, stylish mirrors continuing their domination as one of the hottest at-home must-haves, Cityscape caught up with Eco Frame and Mirror’s Dan Sutherland to tap into the company’s 20 years of experience in selecting or creating the perfect mirror. Mirrors have always played an intrinsic role in decorating a room. From reflecting light and creating the illusion of space through to funky design, mirrors can create a dramatic transformation in any space throughout the home. Above a mantelpiece or fireplace is classic mirror positioning, but mirrors can also turn up the style factor practically anywhere. In the dining room, a mirror will effortlessly complete the room, while in an entrance or hallway above a console table, a mirror will add dimension and bring in light. In addition, a mirror in this part of the house has the added benefit of being able to be used for a quick outfit check before leaving home! A perfectly styled mirror will match the furniture it is hung with, and often these pieces stay together when moved. For those looking for a one-off custom piece, we start the process with a discussion of their ideas, requirements and location. This is often followed up with an onsite consultation, discussing the mirror’s elements and how it will work with their furniture and décor to ensure it fits well. Finally a site fitting service ensures larger mirrors are properly hung. www.frameandmirror.co.nz www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

Tying the knot? There are no excuses for grooms not to be looking sharp on their big day. The good news for guys is it doesn’t need to be difficult. Suit, shirt, tie and done … well, we could put a little more effort in than that. Regardless of how often you're going to wear the suit, I'd recommend the groom purchasing a suit for his big day – you'll own a garment that fits you perfectly and you will look and feel so much better. At the end of the day a wedding is a big spend for most couples, so you might as well come out of it with your own suit – it beats buying one down the track for someone else’s wedding! The groomsmen’s suits (generally hired) don’t have to match the groom's, but the groomsmen’s suits should all match. Take into account the build of your groomsmen when selecting their suits, as not all styles suit all builds – you want your groomsmen feeling great on the day too!

Cityscape has two double passes to Jason Shon Bennet’s Discover The Secrets of Exceptional Health on June 20 to give away; check out our Facebook page for details!

Cityscape caught up with health researcher, international speaker and best-selling author Jason Shon Bennett for three tips on getting through winter unscathed. 1 Fermented foods Humans have safely fermented foods with bacteria and fungi for centuries to produce more prebiotic-rich, nutritious and delicious foods. Tempeh, sourdough bread, miso, apple cider vinegar, yoghurt, nattō, pickled ginger, umeboshi plums, sauerkraut and pickled daikon are all good examples. Fermentation naturally changes, predigests and dramatically improves the foods, protecting the health of your all-important immune system. 2 Catch some Zzzs You cannot replace sleep – get lots of it! Animals hunker down when the light goes out and allow themselves to rest, rebuild, cleanse, and recharge with sleep – so should we. The body fixes itself, reboots and makes miracles happen while you rest. 3 Get sprouting Sprouting turns good foods into superfoods by changing and supercharging the nutritional composition of the wholegrain or seed. Starches become simple sugars. Proteins become amino acids. Fats become fatty acids. Sprouts are the best and richest source of natural, super-absorbable vitamin C, which is well known for boosting immunity and cell regeneration. www.jasonshonbennett.com

66 Victoria Street, Central City 03 366 6948 www.palazzokitchens.co.nz Open: Mon – Fri 9am – 5:30pm, Sat/Sun 10am – 4pm

What started over 10 years ago in Christchurch has developed into an exemplary story of national success. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances have experienced overwhelming growth in the past few years. Today’s designer kitchens are sleek and refined, delivering beautiful living spaces that seamlessly integrate function with comfort. Victoria Street Branch Manager Charlotte Neale says “kitchens are the new living spaces – a space for enjoying time with family and friends”. The living-room-style design introduces an unconventional mix of styles and exquisite materials. Amalgamating classic style and modern elements into one kitchen helps break the barriers to complete the perfect open plan living space. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances use of the very latest in European technologies from Germany is seen as the basis of their continuing development and growth. “Made in Germany” is not simply a slogan, but incorporates a true commitment to quality. Pieta Fletcher, Senior Designer, notes that at Palazzo they determine “the look, the functionality and the specifics” (such as appliances) that you want in your kitchen. When they produce a photo-style image for you, the design is as realistic as possible. They then go through the design with you, adding adjustments and accessories as necessary. Palazzo offer two German-made kitchen brands, Nobilia and Rational. “I enjoy designing and selling kitchens from the Nobilia range as there’s a style to suit everyone’s taste and budget” says Sarah Van der Kley, Senior Designer. Senior Designer Emily Erickson adds that Nobilia is able to achieve high-performance production, delivering unique, high quality kitchen furniture to over 2,600 homes every day. Palazzo also specialise in Rational Kitchen Furniture, which has been available in New Zealand for over 20 years. Rational are the masters of colour and style – their stunning range pairs strong, contemporary colours, available in the most beautiful gloss & matt lacquers, with unique and interesting layouts – blurring the boundaries between kitchens & furniture is what gives Rational “their luxury edge”, says Senior Kitchen Designer Monique Enoka. In Victoria Street you will find a highly qualified kitchen design team, an array of full kitchen displays, appliances, bench tops, sinks, taps, splashbacks, kitchen lighting and other accessories. Palazzo offer a totally free, no-obligation kitchen design service that utilises the latest European design software, allowing you to see your new kitchen in as lifelike a form as possible. HOT PROPERTY WITH MARY TURNBULL

WHY WINTER IS THE TIME TO SELL While many people choose to hibernate their decision to sell over winter and wait for spring, they’re missing out on some serious sales potential. Sure, it might be true that there are fewer buyers, but the motivators to buying a house (work transfers, salary increase, fluctuating family numbers, etc.) are year-round – plus there’s the added bonus of less competition. A warm, inviting and well-presented house marketed professionally over winter will attract widespread interest, and the decision to go to auction provides the perfect option for achieving a premium price – all it takes is a little insider knowledge. Above all your property needs to be bright, warm and inviting: switch out those energy efficient bulbs with the biggest wattage your fittings can handle and if you have a fire, light it during inspections or turn on the heat – people need to picture themselves living there, and that’s not going to happen in an ice-box! Time your open homes to maximise the winter sun, and keep all the curtains drawn; presentation is paramount, so keep on top of the maintenance both inside and out and ensure the yard and gardens are tidy and that you remove any mould, grime or moss. Remember – winter is a great time to play up your home’s cosy, family-friendly charms! www.maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz

TWO TO TANGO

The Cityscape lowdown on excitement capital Buenos Aires. The city that never sleeps, the Paris of South America and birthplace of the tango are all apt descriptors of Argentina’s bustling, hyper-kinetic capital Buenos Aires. With so much happening (and literally at all hours of the day) you’re likely to be whisked off your feet, but wherever in the city your adventure takes you, there’s no doubting you’ll fall under its exotic charms. It’s as if BA has taken the best parts of your favourite places and smashed them together: discover the shopper’s paradise of trendy Palermo Soho’s boutique-lined streets, gape in wonder at the architectural delights, spanning old world art-nouveau to Italian Renaissance (be sure to check out Confitería Del Molino and Palacio Barolo and its wacky back story), and sample the

famous Argentine asado (BBQ – vegetarians beware: meat, and plenty of it, is the order of the day here, where the grilling of beef is treated with religious-like fervour). And unless you’re a night owl, you’re gonna want to catch some Zs before heading out – it’s not uncommon to go out to dinner at 1am (restaurants open from 9pm), with bars opening at midnight and

clubs at 2am (at the earliest) – though if you’re super cool you won’t make an appearance until 4am, then dance through sunrise. If you need help staying awake, the national drink of choice, mate (pronounced ‘mah-tay’), is a caffeine-packed elixir/tea that’s drunk everywhere according to a strict protocol – so follow their lead and put on your dancing shoes.

Virtuoso guests receive bonuses galore including upgrades, daily breakfast for two, and L’Orangerie Restaurant’s famed high tea for two. www.alvearpalace.com

READ, WATCH, LISTEN Reviews, profiles and celebrity insider goss. 1 READ The Buried Giant, Kazuo Ishiguro. Review by Rachel Eadie, Scorpio Books. The Romans have gone and Britain is steadily declining into ruin. Axl and Beatrice, a couple of elderly Britons, decide that it is finally time for them to set off to find their son. They know they will face many hazards, but can’t foresee how their journey will reveal to them their love for each other, nor that they will be joined by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and a knight – each of them, like Axl and Beatrice, lost in some way to his own past. Savage, mysterious, and always moving, Kazuo Ishiguro’s first novel in a decade tells a luminous story about the act of forgetting and the power of memory. RRP $37.

2 WATCH The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. 8 years in the making and hot on the heels of Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises, Studio Ghibli co-founder Takahata’s adaptation of an old Japanese folktale is an equally remarkable farewell film by another master of Japanese animation. Beautifully animated in a hand-drawn style, the film takes us into a timeless world where a humble bamboo cutter finds a miniature, doll-like princess tucked inside a bamboo shoot. He shares the discovery with his wife, but both are shocked when the little princess is suddenly transformed into a baby. The couple adopt the child as their own and decide to raise the girl to be a proper princess.

3 LISTEN Drylands, Mel Parsons. Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. This is Mel Parsons’ third album, and in my opinion her best yet. You may have been lucky enough to have seen one of her shows on her recent national tour, which perfectly captured Drylands beautiful folk sound and Parsons’ stunning vocals. Setting a lovely mood, Drylands features guest musicians including Ron Sexsmith and Anika Moa, which adds a depth and consistency that is absorbing. Highlights on the album include ‘Far Away’, ‘Driving Man’ and ‘Don’t Wait’, but the great thing is that Parsons and her band have a great connection and deliver a strong, well rounded album – a Kiwi classic!

CINEPHILES

Suburban Nightmare They’re heeeere … the classic Poltergeist catchphrase is terrifying a new generation courtesy of Sam Raimi (Spiderman, The Evil Dead), once again giving new meaning to the words ‘suburban hell’ after the youngest member of the Freeling family gets sucked into the TV by disenfranchised spirits. Stepping into the pot-smoking parental roles are Sam Rockwell (Conviction) and Rosemarie DeWitt (United States of Tara). We’re guessing DeWitt would have insisted on fake skeletons for the remake’s pool scene – unlucky predecessor JoBeth Williams took method acting to new levels, doing time with real human bones in the muddy water.

Bodacious Bond babe Gemma Arterton has it all: looks, talent, a killer singing voice and, when she was born, two extra fingers (!). Arterton describes her polydactyly as her “little oddity that I’m really proud of.” “People are really interested but repulsed at the same time,” she’s said of the dual digits that formerly neighboured her pinkies. And the quirks don’t end there; she was also born with a crumpled ear. “I was born with a lot of deformities,” the former Esquire Woman of the Year says of her rough start.

Adding its name to the list of companies celebrating the rebirth of the Isaac Theatre Royal, the New Zealand Opera and director Kate Cherry tackle Puccini’s heart-rending Madama Butterfly there in July. The timeless story of hope, honour, fidelity and love has been hailed as one of the most meaningful, moving experiences one can have in a theatre, and the beautiful setting of the Theatre Royal is sure to be a fitting home to this lavish production and its sumptuous costumes and scenery. With the CSO accompanying the NZ Opera Chorus and opera stars such as Anne-Sophie Duprels (France), Angus Wood (Australia) and Kiwi talent that includes Kristin Darragh, James Rodgers and Jared Holt, it’s sure to be a spectacular night at the theatre. things into high gear in July with The Power and the Passion, a concert that combines two dream teams: the classical brilliance of both Liszt and Mahler with the supreme musicianship of superstar Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko (pictured) and Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski. First on the bill will be Lizst’s Piano Concerto No. 2 – a study in subtlety that will be a showcase for Trpčeski’s famous sensitivity at the keyboard – before Petrenko winds the orchestra up for Mahler’s mighty 5th Symphony. Here’s a rare chance to experience two classical music legends-in-themaking bringing glorious life to two legends of composing. The Power and the Passion, Horncastle Arena, 15 July www.nzso.co.nz

HERE & NOW the last word

Qb Studios

Hello Sunday

NEW LEASE OF LIFE

The Christchurch buildings getting a second (or third, or fourth!) life.

We’re all thinking ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ – right? But it’s hard to compete with certain local entrepreneurs and business owners who have taken this line of thinking to a macro scale by repurposing and rejuvenating some of the city’s old buildings. With local architectural history taking a bit of a thrashing in recent years, it’s good to see there are still plenty of places you can go in the city to inject a bit of old-fashioned character and charm into your day. Qb Studios Cityscape’s new HQ, Qb Studios – once a nondescript 80s warehouse facility and then a mechanic’s workshop – has recently been gussied up good and proper, with the building’s original shell now housing modern modular office units that are home to a range of funky businesses. There's also a buzzing café and a communal/ collaborative space with a retro feel that doubles as a mini art-gallery. Hello Sunday Hello Sunday’s unassuming wooden building in Sydenham is a heritage award finalist that actually dates all the

way back to the 1870s, when it was erected in the central city as an early post office. When the mail moved out, the building shifted to Sydenham for a new life as a Sunday school – a backstory you can spot today in the acclaimed café’s antique pews. Pomeroy’s Old Brewery Inn This grand old lady of hospitality in Kilmore Street occupies two double-storey brick buildings that were once part of Ward’s Brewery, dating back to 1854. Brewery operations onsite halted in 1955, but then Pomeroy’s opened in 2004, much to the joy of lovers of good beer and good pub food. The Tannery The Woolston retail boutique and entertainment hub is housed inside buildings originally built as part of the eponymous tannery, which dates back to about 1874, and the aesthetics of its Victorian era orgins have been gloriously embraced in its makeover. XCHC The Exchange’s (XCHC) creative hub in Wilson's Road was formerly occupied by a pickle and salami factory, built in 1950.

Christchurch Here & Now

The building also housed an auto parts business before its recent transformation into a flexible production and showcase space. The Court Theatre The relocated Court's nickname – ‘The Shed’ – amusingly downplays the scale of the 3,200 square metre former grain store that now houses the theatre, while the trappings of the building’s former life add a touch of industrial chic to the foyer. Hotel Montreal It’s only been a slight change in usage post-quakes for the familiar white building in Montreal Street – from residential apartments to hotel – but the reno has been revolutionary, with the boutique hotel showcasing superb design and decadent furnishings. Jailhouse Backpackers People entering this building these days want to stay; the same probably couldn’t be said of potential guests when it opened as a prison in 1874. The pokey continued in its role for 125 years before becoming an award-winning accommodation provider.
