KILLER OPERA The Isaac Theatre Royal will be transformed into 1950s Italy when NZ Opera brings Puccini’s darkly twisted tale of lust, revenge and sacrifice, Tosca, down to Christchurch (Mar 8 – 16). With things (finally!) roaring into life on the epic riverfront party precinct The Terrace, its collection of 17 premium restaurants and watering holes looks set to quickly become a city hot-spot. An architectural stunner, the complex shares the old ‘Strip’ with established haunts Original Sin, Kong bar and local fave Fat Eddies. First to open was Botanic, a garden bar with swagger, while Terrace Tavern, brainchild of Dux kingpin Richard Sinke, was due to open as we went to print. Expect hectic shenanigans when Chiwahwah Mexican Cantina Bar (from Stealth's Tony Astle), opens in late April, a welcome return for the Bangalore Polo Club, and another killer venue from Louis Vieceli and the team at Vieceli Hospitality Ltd., among many others!

Rag ‘n’ Bone Man (real name Rory Charles Graham) had been working a prolific underground profile for years before instant banger ‘Human’ came along and launched him into the stratosphere. Cityscape scours the city's international food scene to bring you the best of locally-available global flavours, from France to Vietnam and everywhere in between. EUROPE ITALY There are several excellent Italian food options within the city. St Asaph Street’s Baretta describes itself as “a little piece of Italy in Christchurch”, and offers an air of European sophistication in some seriously swanky surrounds in addition to its range of Italian food favourites and lavish wine list. Just down the road, the city institution that is Café Valentino has an outstanding range of wood-fired pizza, pasta dishes, and a long string of culinary awards. Near the Isaac Theatre Royal you'll find Francesca’s Italian Kitchen, a Christchurch branch of a legendary Wanaka restaurant that uses local, seasonal produce to create their ever-changing, highly-tempting menu of Italian classics. In Colombo Street, Venuti’s modern takes on classic Italian fare like their Veal Picante (starring pan-fried veal with onion, olives, and capsicum in a garlic and chilli tomato salsa) are served in a welcoming atmosphere and are accompanied by a collection of excellent Kiwi and Italian wines. The oldest restaurant in Christchurch, Spagalimis has made itself a local legend thanks to its amazing pizzas (some 39 varieties in all!) and no-less legendary ‘Spags chips’; visit their central city restaurant in the historic Ironside House to relax with a drink and some seriously tasty food, perhaps on the sunny deck. You’ll also find amazing gourmet pizzas in Shirley at Cocopelli Gourmet Pizza Bar in The Palms, and at Zanzibar in Merivale, where their Valoriani pizza oven keeps the calzones and pizzas (try the Soppressa with salami, bacon, prosciutto, rosemary and mozzarella) coming fresh and fast.

Over in Lyttelton, Freeman’s hearty, Italian-inspired food (think made-from-scratch pastas and authentically Italian handstretched pizza) are just two of the reasons people keep coming back. Head over on a Sunday afternoon to enjoy music from local jazz legend Carmel Courtney and friends. FRANCE Fusing French coffee, music and their eponymous crepes, the funky Maison de Crepes creperie at Carlton Courts serves up sweet (hello orange intense featuring chocolate, fresh oranges and almonds!) and savoury (the classic ham and cheese) dishes. Fine food and a genuine French dining experience is the order of the day at St Germain, now firmly established in their new St Asaph Street location and recently open for lunch with the likes of Quiche Lorraine and Crème Caramel (naturellement).

BELGIUM Belgium’s best craft beers on tap join New Zealand’s best produce in a Belgian flavour at Belgian Beer Café Torenhof. Dine and relax over the classic beer range as you soak up the atmosphere of their classic 1920s Belgian fitout.
MEDITERRANEAN With an epic beer garden, live music and spacious dining room serving fine Mediterranean fusion, Trevinos is a Riccarton Road stalwart, while Mediterranean Food Company & Café serves wood-fired pizzas and Italian gelato alongside a bevvy of Mediterranean eats throughout the week, and on Friday nights. EURO FUSION In the central city you’ll find stylish newcomer Universo Brasserie & Bar, housed in the contemporary cool of the Christchurch Art Gallery, and dispensing deliciousness in the form of upscaled Yorkshire Puddings, Cumin Salted Pork Belly
and other exotic border-pushing creations and exceptional cocktails. Not far away, Strawberry Fare is rightly famous for its primo desserts, as well as fine Euro fare that combines the influences of Italy, France and … Scandinavia (courtesy of their totally boss home cured salmon gravlax!), while in historic New Regent Street, modern yet classic bistro Twenty Seven Steps is sleek, stylish and welcoming, with a relaxing atmosphere rocking serious gourmet credentials from owners Emma Mettrick and Paul Howell. Lux central city venue The Happening Bar & Kitchen offers outstanding hospitality near the Isaac Theatre Royal with an enticing European-inspired menu, including the aptly-titled Happening Francesinha and heaven-sent truffle and parmesan fries. And at Carlton Corner, Vesuvio is famous not only for its sophisticated atmosphere and wine list, but also some seriously good European-style tapas and platters; if you miss the Chargrilled Halloumi & Pancetta Parcels, you will sorely regret it.
USA A relaxed late night venue with a speakeasy vibe, Boo Radley’s Food & Liquor’s tasty plates take their inspiration from the cuisine of the American South – seek them out in Victoria Street to share ‘em around. Central city outfit Orleans channels some serious Bourbon

Street swagger – hearty Creole soul food is the order of the day, and you’ll need to make sure you’re not dining alone when you tackle their mighty Waffle Stack, a huge tower of fluffy waffles, fried chicken, pork belly, bacon pieces and duck wings groaning under a load of cheese, slaw, onion rings and maple chipotle. Staying in the city, authentic Americana experiences can be found via the pop culture cool of Sun Dog Diner, featuring an all-day breakfast menu and serious Mex-appeal alongside classics like Mac-n-Cheese (a.k.a The Greatest Show on Earth), and the brand-new nostalgia of Diner 66, which taps that Happy Days vibe with the classic black and white tile and neon look, booths, and all the delicious American diner fare you’d expect, including fantastic breakfasts, gourmet all-American burgers, splits and sundaes and no fewer than 38(!) types of milkshake. It’s the most, daddy-o! In between the two on Victoria Street, Rockstar Pizza & Drink Parlour serves fierce Americanstyle pizza and burgers with a side of rock and roll attitude and live music all week. If you’re looking for a classic, New York-style steakhouse experience, Bloody Mary’s at the Rydges Latimer is a brooding, sophisticated space furnished with dark oak and buttery leather where they take steaks very seriously – melt into meat-lover’s heaven. Other US-of-A-styled offerings include the tasty breakfast offerings of Drexels and the casual eats at Lower 9th Diner. And it’s the Aloha State’s culinary traditions that feature at The Crossing’s Piki Poke, which offers fresh, tasty poke bowls that embrace the delicious Hawaiian tradition of marinated seafood salads, with a build-your-own bowl approach that lets you tailor the low-carb goodness directly to your own preferences. There’s granola for brekky, too!

CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA MEXICO Mexicano’s on Victoria Street serves up fine Mexican street food in stylish surrounds with an emphasis on fun – provided you’re able to get a table (book early!). With its Tarantino-cool fit-out and buzzing atmosphere finished off with hip and friendly staff and an authentic south-ofthe-border soundtrack, Mexico in Manchester Street offers fresh and feisty Mexican fare and a laidback vibe. Alvarado’s Mexican Cantina on Lichfield Street is the go-to spot for authentic Mexican cuisine prepared by Mexican chefs. Peruse their new menu to find the Chiles Rellenos; oh-so-Mexican stuffed chilli peppers with red salsa, grilled cheese and choice of filling – deliciously fiesty. Look out too for a welcome addition to the Mexican cuisine scene in the form of The Terrace’s Chiwahwah Mexican Cantina Bar, opening late April, from the Stealth Hospitality team.

LATIN AMERICA For a slice of Havana, hit the cabana of cool that is The Cuban in St Asaph Street, where they take rum extremely seriously. Try the Arroz Imperial (feisty Achiote chicken with cheese and mayo on rice) and brewedfor-the-venue Cuba Laga. Rocking some serious street food cred, the team at Caribe Latin Kitchen, at bodacious shared eatery space Little High, turns out tasty treats like arepas, tapas, tacos and more, plus killer cocktails. Mere metres away, sister outfit El Fogón Grill is a South American-style grill house, offering a wide range of the tastes of Argentina, Brazil, and more. BBQ Brazil Churrasco’s location in Papanui brings authentic, allyou-can-eat Brazilian dining to Christchurch – just help yourself to the succulent grilled skewers of meat and side dishes as they make their way to your table. And at ‘The Papanui’ complex, you’ll find Embers Bar and Restaurant, an exciting fire pit restaurant (with

a new menu!) and bar open Friday and Saturdays and offering some of Christchurch’s best acoustic music acts each night. Argentinian cuisine is also celebrated at the Hotel Montreal's Polo Bar, where choice cuts of grilled meats join Patatas Bravas and other delights – don't miss the signature Pollo al Chimichurri, with your choice of chicken leg or breast cooked on a woodfired rotisserie and served up with sauté potatoes and courgette with a green chimichurri sauce. Bravo!
AFRICA MOROCCO Established by local chef and food identity Simo, Mosaic by Simo is a Moroccan culinary adventure in Addington serving up delectable tagines, salads and Mediterranean deli items, offering lucky customers a fresh taste sensation of authentic, aromatic spices and flavours.
ASIA MIDDLE EAST With everything cooked on site and following traditional family recipes, Richmond’s Persian Kitchen marries the exotic and colourful flavours of ancient Persian and Turkish cuisine with an authentic dining experience. It’s all about
tender meat cooked to perfection with a unique mix of spices. In Riccarton, new entry Prince of Persia Restaurant rocks some seriously tasty Afghani and Iranian fare, with handmade kebabs grilled over a charcoal fire for that wicked smoky taste! And Chic Restaurant in Manchester Street offers the delicious flavours of the traditional fare of ancient Persia, with outstanding chargrilled meats and an additional emphasis on seafood. CHINA The city’s home of Chinese food on a grand scale is the wide open dining room of Madam Kwong’s, which recalls the bustling dining establishments of Shanghai and Hong Kong. Lunch is all about Yum Cha, where the tasty morsels are served in bamboo steamers, while traditional Cantonese and Sichuan cuisine is cranked out at night. In Cathedral Junction near the Square, Chong’s offers a traditional Chinese dining experience – try a unique line-up that includes Chinese BBQ, seafood, and cookat-your-table Chinese hotpot/ steamboat. There’s more authentic Chinese fare at Gold and Jade Restaurant, which operates with a team of highly-qualified chefs from China; the Beijing Roast Duck has a strong fan base.
Get into mouth-watering Chinese street food inspired by the multicultural influences and traditional flavours of Shanghai at Shanghai Street Dumplings, where dumpling master Norman calls on 30 years of experience to create crispy pot stickers, noodles and other delectable delicacies. Sharing Norman’s aim of serving some of the best dumplings you’ll find, the team behind Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar on Poplar Street in the city have matched the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods along with beer, sake and inspired cocktails. They’ve also got an ‘eat on the go kiosk’ at The Colombo. Head to Sister Kong’s Hong Kong baijiu-house stylings in Victoria Street, where a range of tricked-up bao burgers such as their Signature Saffron Chicken Bao are on offer alongside the fiery Chinese spirit and killer cocktails. And in Little High, new outfit Eightgrains rocks boutique Chinese food that includes handmade dumplings, baos, and some excellent Taiwanese and Sichuan cuisine classics. TAIWAN Papanui hot spot Little Taipei offers a traditional Taiwanese menu that rocks a tantalising mix of the classic mild, sweet and savoury flavours of

the island. Broaden your culinary horizons with a bubble tea or a Taiwanese fruit-flavoured beer (mango anyone?) alongside one of their authentic street food dishes. JAPAN With entry via off-the-hook samurai sword door handles, city hot spot Empire combines yakitori and izakaya-style dishes designed to be shared in its atmosphere of Japanese refinement. A yakitori grill towards the rear brings the theatrics of the kitchen into the dining room, where tender meats are roasted to perfection and a well-stocked bar features fine Japanese whiskies and sakes. Along Victoria Street you’ll find the home of the addictive Sushi Burger and other Japanese delicacies at Hachi Hachi (with sibling venues located at the Bush Inn Centre, BNZ Centre, and Rangiora). Stay central to find the new Hikari Sushi Bar in the Awly Building; already established in Queenstown and Dunedin, they’re now bringing their winning sushi and Japanese lunch options like Teriyaki Donburi to the Christchurch masses (loving that big koi art, too!). In Edgeware, the calm, woodfeaturing interior of Tomi Japanese Restaurant is a prelude to a traditional Japanese feast and a premium sake range among the best available anywhere. Strowan’s The Sushi Ninja is a great little neighbourhood sushi shop that whips up some of the freshest, tastiest sushi you’ll find in the city, perfect to grab for some late lunch on a busy day. Head to Waltham to discover the under-theradar charms of The Exchange’s open kitchen at XCHC on Wilsons Road. Forget about menus though, as they stock their impressive cabinet fare with fresh food made daily and all sourced from local suppliers. For an industrial edge, you can’t beat the speakeasy swank of prohibition cool Mama Hooch on Colombo Street. Sophistication and share plates abound at Addington’s Town Tonic on Bernard Street – this sleek eatery serves up the freshest local fare by way of genius chef/owner Jamie Bennett alongside organic coffee, craft beers and fine wines. Neighbouring Addington Coffee Co-Op’s wares come with a side serving of good karma; roasters of Jail Breaker coffee out of a former mechanic’s workshop, the café is a local fave and their banana bread is the stuff of legend. On Riccarton Road, Park Ranger’s rustic aesthetic and artisan focus is quickly becoming a go-to fave (along with their Reuben Sandwich). In the central city, Apartment Coffee’s alt-cool urban den adds a Japanese edge to their menu, which stars the likes of Karaage Fried Chicken and tacos washed down with Lyttelton Coffee Co’s finest. And channelling seriously quirky cool, the team at Spooky Boogie in Lyttelton combine primo coffee (from neighbouring roasters Lyttelton Coffee Co.), cakes, and cookies with local art, collectibles and some serious vinyl.
THE FOUR AVENUES The rejuvenating city centre is pretty much bursting with awesome cafés and crazy good

Dotted around the CBD – on Victoria Street, The Crossing and newly at Oxford Terrace (and out at Bush Inn too), Black & White Coffee Cartel teams a slick fitout with sweet and savoury offerings at Bink Bowlers’ everexpanding empire; look out for new stores coming soon at High Street and Lichfield Street too (along with a few more besides planned for the year). In Cathedral Square discover the sandstone charms of O.G.B Christchurch – grab a takeaway coffee from the handy Square-side coffee window or kick back in the prohibition cool at this swanky affair and order in a platter, and make plans to come back later that night when it turns into a buzzing bar. Tucked away in the BNZ Centre is funky-as-all-get-out boutique coffee bar Little Brews Espresso, serving up some seriously mean brews. It's High Street's ANZ Centre that houses Arbo, nestled around the building's spectacular 6-metre tree art piece. Nestled inside Ballantynes’ edgy fashion emporium the Contemporary Lounge, you’ll discover the charms of Ello Café & Eatery, where European-inspired handmade eats meet Underground’s range of coffee. Named for the year in which the original hotel was built on the same site, Crowne Plaza Christchurch’s Café 1851 in Colombo Street is a great place to start your day with an excellent coffee and their 1851 Bennie. to St Asaph Street’s Boxed Quarter cool where self-described “sensory focussed company” Engine Coffee Brewers serves coffee tasting trays and coffee-matched fare for the ultimate caffeine experience. And seriously good java (courtesy of Lyttelton Coffee Co.) is the order of the day at the two-storied charms of New Regent Street fave The Caffeine Laboratory (their super-creative delish doughnuts are almost too pretty to eat – almost). Check out the re-burgeoning Arts Centre as it bounces back post-quake with a trip to Bunsen, who have resurrected former venue Le Café’s world-famous-in-Christchurch Chicken Nachos, or keep heading down Worcester Boulevard to the east to find the appropriately named Boulevard Café and Bar, where the Halloumi Salad features quinoa, roasted capsicum, cashews and house-made lime, ginger and chilli dressing – a supremely satisfying lunch option. Just a block north on Gloucester Street, Lux Espresso, housed within the stunning Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA), offer local and organic delights (including their legendary custard croissant cakes!) as well as ethical and consciously sustainable products. Half a block to the east on the Cambridge Terrace corner, New York-style bagelry Johnny Sausage serves up hand-rolled boiled bagels and amazing pizza. South a couple of blocks, the new West End Stories on the corner of Cambridge and Cashel do fantastic calzone and pizza; look out too for the saffron

On Hereford Street, Avon River views and Atomic coffee is where it’s at for stylin’ Therapy, where you’ll find such culinary delights as their cookies and cream slice. And on the west of the river is Everyday Dose; you owe it to yourself to try one of their epic Bagel Sandwiches (trust us!) or a legendary Pizza Boat. To the south of Durham Street, the industrial cool of Underground Coffee Roasters is home to Christchurch’s only fluidised air roaster and some of the city’s finest pain aux raisins, while to the north, Curious Palate is a brand new hybrid café/ bistro featuring the talents of well-travelled chef Henry, and award-winning coffee from Orb Coffee, and further north again you’ll find Laneway Espresso, rocking an all day brunch menu alongside killer coffee. Take a right off Montreal down Walker Street to discover boutique coffee roastery and espresso bar The Anchorage, serving their own locally-roasted beans and Posh Porridge for brekky, or keep heading north to find super cute MADE Espresso Bar on the Montreal/Cashel corner, who turn out honest, wholesome and simple fare (be sure to check out their freshly made and daily-changing salads – they’re the bomb!). On Manchester Street, at the corner of Welles, you’ll find Raw Sugar, a new vegetarian and vegan-friendly entry on the city scene rocking tasty, stripped-back meals like their Avo Mash & Hash – smashed avocado and crispy rosti with fresh coriander, house-made pickle, and grilled halloumi or vegan cashew cheese on sourdough toast. And to the east of Manchester on Southwark Street, Grain serves up fierce coffee and regularly-changing, delicious lunch bowls like spicy chicken or falafel with quinoa, chilli roast eggplant, rosemary pumpkin, broccolini, hummus and feta. Along Tuam Street you’ll find Apartment Coffee, who are as famous for their mean brews as they are their delicious combination of European and Japanese menu favourites

– go whether you’re in the mood for Brioche French Toast or Karaage Fried Chicken! – and down the road to the east a bit are self-roasters Magnitude Café & Roastery, where their jump-starting house blends (including the bodacious Blue Mountain) are served alongside Oreo shakes and housemade baked goods. To the east of the CBD, you’ll find healthy eating at The Herb Centre on Kilmore Street – this wholefoods leader teams seasonal vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free eats with health-promoting drinks like ginger tonic and herbal tea blends (including turmeric latté) – and it’s all served in a charming hardfloor cottage or leafy garden setting. (If a more traditional coffee is in order, Switch coffee is still in the house!) Further east on Kilmore, Little Pom’s (next door to sibling institution Pomeroy’s Old Brewery Inn) houses tasty and nutritious fare which features housemade nut butters and go-to brunch offerings, like their life-changing Eggs Benny, served alongside craft beers, wine, local C4 coffee and WabiO Kombucha on tap. And seek out Coffee Embassy on Fitzgerald Avenue; these serious coffeeheads cater beautifully to the masses with a small brunch-esque menu and brimming cabinet, and also offer specialty brews, beans and the lowdown on all things coffee.
NORTH Head north to find Merivale’s Café Metro along Papanui Road; it’s an art-inspired café serving seriously good Blackbird coffee alongside an extensive selection of teas and some of the city’s finest pies. In Edgeware, Café PJ create a wide variety of food fresh on

site every day, and can satisfy those cravings of yours with gluten-free cookies, dairy-free brownies, or a piece of chicken lasagne. Over in St Albans, The Origin turns out specialty teas (including some from NZ’s only tea plantation!) and coffees alongside pure vegetarian cuisine. Try Harewood’s Café Raeward on Harewood Road where locals flock to enjoy freshly-made cabinet fare and an epic menu – get here early to avoid missing out. In Burnside, sustainable style joins one of the country’s leading sustainable cafés at Untouched World’s Native Garden Café. The menu is a celebration of all that’s fresh, seasonal and organic, balancing sensational cooked-to-order breakfast, brunch and lunch items alongside decadent cabinet fare. Just north up Roydvale Avenue, Strange Bandit from legendary Christchurch barista Luciano Marcolino (twice a World Top 10 barista), offers fantastic coffee (unsurprisingly) and delicious, regularly changing chef’s specials like open souvlaki with Japanese crispy fried chicken, while further north again, on the corner of Wairakei Road, long-established Terra Viva is a favourite weekend destination that combines a garden centre, an inspiring homewares and gift store, and an iconic café. Tasty deli offerings and a specialist brunch menu in chilled surrounds are reasons enough to visit Bishopdale’s Café Vivo, but their unforgettable Vivo’s Waffle (think hot waffles topped with bacon, raspberry coulis and ice cream) make them a must. WEST In Riccarton, Café Sismo on Riccarton Road is a relaxed hangout offering a range of delicious home-baked goodies, including their signature Sourdough French Toast – and if you’re not feeling like a coffee, their toffee hot chocolate has a cult following. For a bit of history, head to the gorgeous gardens of Fendalton’s historic Mona Vale Homestead & Pantry, who serve quite possibly the city’s finest high teas, which have to be seen (and tasted) to be believed. Indulge in the fine selection of Dilmah’s exclusive tea range or celebrate with a flute of French bubbles – Veuve Clicquot anyone? Continue further west out to Russley to seek out Passengers & Co and their primo Dukkah Eggs. In the southwest, Addington has become somewhat of a café hot spot. On Wrights Road, Milieu Café’s lunch menu satisfies with

hearty classics including lambs fry and bacon and the creamy, chunky goodness of their signature seafood chowder, served alongside Hummingbird Coffee. Don’t miss popping into Bernard Street’s Little Merchants either for seriously good self-roasted coffee and guilt-free sweet treats. Portershed in Lincoln Road, meanwhile, offers some of the city’s finest vegan fare; their awesome stuffed spuds are a must! And in Show Place not far from Addington Raceway, you’ll find Mrs Hucks, named for a legendary city café proprietor and offering cabinet goodies and the also-legendary Bao Big Breakfast, a steamed Chinese bao bun with belly bacon, kransky sausage, garlic mushroom, hashbrown, roast tomato, soft poached egg and sweet miso paste.
SOUTH Take a trip to Cashmere for the goodies on offer at taste @ twenty, where locallyroasted Hummingbird Coffee is served alongside some of the city’s finest baked delights. In Sydenham’s boutique shopping centre The Colombo you’ll find the fluidised hot air roasted charms of Underground Café, where single-origin-brew-infused cheesecakes meet fine savoury fare alongside their famed coffees. For a quickie on the go, they also have an outlet in the centre’s food court pumping out their primo brews, including their legendary fair trade and organic offering Beatnik for serious

coffee drinkers. Up the hill at Cashmere’s Emperor’s New Clothes on Dyers Pass Road, locally-roasted Supreme coffee is combined with killer views and rightfully famous date orange scones. The Sign of the Kiwi on Summit Road has also made a welcome return to the café scene, and offers great views with your bagel, coffee, or ice cream. You’ll need to head for the hills to find Christchurch Adventure Park in Cracoft too, where tasty eats and cool brews on the deck complement the down-hill mountain biking and other action adventures.
EAST Ferry Road lets you follow a trail of good cafés out towards Sumner. First cab off the rank heading east is Gentle Giant’s diverse Waltham offering, including homemade ice tea and bodacious takes on the classic bacon and eggs. The hip Lyttelton Records (in, counterintuitively, Woolston) offers not only fresh coffee, bagels and doughnuts but also leather goods, merch, books and even guitar strings! Keep heading east to Ferrymead to hook yourself up with a caffeine fix and dose of ‘good honest food’ at the off-the-grid charms of Dispense Espresso, where you can also pick up housemade jams, chutneys and more, or drop into modern eatery ten27, which serves up some outstanding coffee and seriously sophisticated plates from its contemporary menu, as well as the unmissable John’s Mum’s Fudge (or simply JMF to those in the know). Once you make it seaside, you can relax at Sumner’s Blackbird Café and Bar, a perfect escape; they’ve got some delicious meals on offer just over the Esplanade from the beach (be sure to enquire after chef Navi’s Fish of the Day).

Also on Victoria Street, Procopé Coffee House sees Hummingbird Coffee join free range eggs and free-farmed bacon on the menu, all served up in their swanky digs. art artwork, all culinary revelation, the Chillingworth Apple Crumble is a temptation worthy of the Garden of Eden, an eye-widening display of gastronomic genius and a fitting finale to our 9-course trust-thechef degustation. Under the spoon, the glistening green orb reveals a delicate mousse and rich apple compote. Spiked with cinnamon, the sharp nuances are tempered by the creamy mousse, while the crumble adds a satisfying, nutty crunch. Paired with the Braeburn tang of Malus Mama ice cider, it’s one of the city’s finest desserts. Both a destination and a journey, Chillingworth Road epitomises that under-the-radar New York cool which sees many of the best dining hot spots tucked away in unassuming locales, reinforcing the fact that all the best things in life require a little effort. The brainchild of husband and wife duo Darren (head chef) and Leanne Wright, it’s a multi-tasking space, offering a primo café/bar, bustling bistro and fine dining sans the stuffy pretension. Thursday evening is in full swing when we arrive, the bistro abuzz with the excited chatter and

Immediately greeted and seated in the red curtained swank of the private G.H Mumm Room by effortlessly disarming front of house charmer/manager Mark Harris, we order up pre dinner cocktails and embrace the ‘take your time’ atmosphere. Partway through our cocktails (a lush, zesty Lemon Meringue Pie with a kick, complete with meringue float, and the decadent charms of a sublime Peanut Butter Espresso Martini), Mark leads us down the awardstrewn hallway to the dining room. Opulent, elegant, and intimate, it’s a moodily lit space where Tiffany-blue and black leather chairs sit under floating glass chandeliers and tactile wallpaper meets bevelled mirror skirting and dark wood walls. It’s an immediately welcoming and calming oasis with the focus on the cuisine and the company; it’s an escape so complete you could be anywhere. The degustation sees us starting with Spiced Carrot Soup and Pan Seared Scallop with a Bacon and Cauliflower Risotto, garnished with pickled cauliflower, paired with a flinty Pegasus Bay Sauvignon Semillon. The soup is just enough to leave us wanting more, while the scallops are supremely fresh, creamy and brought to life by the bacon and cauliflower, setting the benchmark for an exquisite banquet of the senses. Provocative, daring and unashamedly unconventional, it’s a menu where the detail, textures and careful balance of flavours astound with each mouthful. Time loses all meaning as we eagerly await each new epicurean sensation, traversing such delights as Akaroa Salmon, Crispy Skin Chicken, Pork Cheek Croquette, Beef Fillet & Braised Beef Short Rib, Goats Cheese Whip, and the tropics on a plate that is the Chocolate Crémeux, all brilliantly paired to a premium flight of killer New Zealand wines.

Cityscape caught up with local artisan Ann Joseph from White Heart Specialty Hazelnut Products on growing a health-food empire based on hazelnuts. How did you get into the hazelnut business? In 2006 our family planted some hazelnut seedlings on our property in Tai Tapu. When the trees began to mature and nuts were harvested, the idea of creating delicious, nutritious food was born. We wanted to provide a local product that was better than other things on the market. Back then, Nutella didn't have a lot of competition – we wanted to provide people with an alternative. Tell us about your signature product. The idea of an artisan hazelnut and chocolate butter was what kicked it all off. We wanted to create a delicious spread which was predominantly hazelnuts, with minimal sweeteners and no additives or preservatives. I think we've achieved that, with every jar of nut butter containing 150+ nuts. Hazelnut + Cocoa feels like our original product, but White Heart has become so much more. We now have 6 nut butters and many other hazelnut-based goodies.
What inspires your products? Our family, friends and the Farmers’ Market environment. We love chatting to our customers, and take on suggestions/feedback. At the market we can see what's grown and available in our region. We like to source local ingredients where possible; and if further afield, choose ethical/sustainable suppliers. A certain number of our products evolve with the seasons – fresh in summer, warm spices in winter, etc. Because we have kept things small and I’m very hands-on, our business has flexibility. What’s something we don’t know about hazelnuts? The hazelnut tree is a monoecious plant – which means that individual male and female flowers develop on the same tree. It is also wind pollinated, and the ancient Greeks used hazelnuts to cure baldness! What are the criteria for your products? Jam packed with nuts, minimal (none where possible)

sweeteners, no additives or preservatives, gluten-free, dairy-free, and increasingly we are becoming totally vegan! What’s the best way to enjoy your Sweet Chilli Hazelnut Handfuls? The Sweet Chilli Hazelnut Handfuls are roasted in our own Sweet Chilli Sauce and are fabulous alongside any soft cheese and crisp glass of white, or atop salads or stir fries. What do you do with the shells? We would love to figure out some way of creating a delicious body scrub – but that’s a project for another day! Fall Trends Cityscape caught up with Ballantynes’ stylist Anna Williams for the inside word on autumn’s hottest looks – leather, fur, and marmalade.
While I’ll miss the last of the long summer days, autumn fashion trends have me pretty excited! Leather is the trend all fashionistas are flocking to: leather tops, leather skirts, leather shorts and leather jumpsuits. It’s safe to say that style mavens everywhere are rejoicing in this re-occurring leather trend. I’ll be working two of the most popular leather styles: a leather skirt and the leather romper. You can’t have leather without wrapping yourself up in the other key autumn trend, fur (faux, of course!). A vest is one of the easiest ways to work the fur trend into your wardrobe and the perfect topper to throw on over almost any outfit. The only colour for autumn is marmalade. This shade of orange promises to make a statement throughout 2018; either through small details or big pops of colour, it will make any outfit look trendy and refined, whether it’s on a bold handbag or a daring faux fur coat. here are certain times of the year that are unavoidably busy. Things tend to come in waves; we have an impending deadline, a flurry of events we’ve committed to one after another, or it’s school holiday time and we’re trying to meet the needs of our children and work, all at the same time. For many people, the end of summer also marks the end of an
exceptionally busy period. But what happens when the warmer weather wanes, the social gatherings start to space out and we find ourselves with a little extra time on our hands? Many people tell me that they feel restless or lazy when they’re not filling up every moment of their time with something to do – when they’re not being productive. You might notice this particularly when

you go on holiday or when there’s a long weekend. Even though you may think to yourself “I’m just going to chill out and do nothing”, you inevitably fill your days with activities because, well, you better make the most of it! We can fall into the habit of perpetual ‘doing’ just because we feel more comfortable being busy. When we take our foot off the accelerator and create some space in our lives, our body has a chance to catch up. It’s not accustomed to running at a-hundred-miles-an-hour from the time we wake up in the morning to the moment we lay our heads down on our pillow at night. Slowing down improves our digestion, reduces anxious feelings, nourishes our nervous system and can help to calm our thoughts. It can also improve our sleep, energy levels and immune system function. All this just from slowing down! Slowing down might look like reading a book, going for a gentle walk in nature, or taking yourself and/or the family down to the park. It might be taking 10 or 30 minutes to watch the sunset, doing a restorative yoga class instead of a more vigorous one, or meditating. In an ideal world, it would be technology free to give your brain a break from devices as well – but that might be something to work towards if it feels too challenging. o you’ve been to the open home, done your due diligence, and your dream house is right there ready and waiting for you – but it’s for sale by auction! It can be a tough process for buyers, but some preparation working with an experienced auction agent and company, and the right attitude going in, can give you the best chance of success. Before you attend the auction, do some homework – sit down with your agent to set a strategy around bidding. Study sales figures and GVs in the area to get an idea of the value of the property, then have three prices in mind: 1) would love to pay, 2) think you’ll have to pay, 3) your walk away price. If you can, set your upper limit at slightly more than a rounded figure – many bidders fix a rounded figure in their minds as a limit, so if you can go a
little higher, they may just bail before you! On the day, get to the auction early, settle in, and try to relax; body language and confidence can be as important in the room as your bank balance. Noone in the room knows your upper limit except you! The cheapest bid is the opening bid, so get in early to help calm your nerves. When bidding begins in earnest, if you’re still within your budget, be bold. Fire back quick incremental bids to keep rivals off balance while they’re still thinking, and don’t be afraid to make bigger bids and round up to significant figures to put the heat on – you may knock out weaker opponents, and your strength may

If you spot rival bidders in anxious or lengthy discussions, you’ll know you’ve got them on the ropes. Watch the auctioneer, too; a lengthy discussion with the vendor, for instance, may indicate the property is coming close to its reserve price. If the property hasn’t reached reserve, make sure you’re the final bidder and you’ll get to negotiate with the seller. Cityscape caught up with Canopy Landscape Architects’ Paul Roper-Gee and Gabe Ross for some killer tips and design rules on using colour in outdoor spaces.
C
olour is an essential character of the landscape. It provokes an emotional response in people and is a powerful building block in landscape and garden design. Colour can be mood-changing, with different colours offering warmth and excitement, others calm and refreshment. There are many ways to introduce colour into our outdoor spaces – through planting and hard landscape elements including painted surfaces, materials like steel, timber and plastic, and by introducing colourful furnishings. Hard landscaping can add bold blocks of permanent massed colour, providing year-round impact. Natural colour from plant foliage and flowers is more complex, as they transition and change through the seasons. Also, the variability of natural light means that colours outside can look very different across a day, season and in different weather conditions.
Colour in landscape and garden design is best used thoughtfully and sparingly. Like interior design, restricting the colour palette in your garden can add focus and cohesion to an outdoor space. Pure monochromatic gardens (one colour plus green) are popular but are hard to do well. Perhaps the most famous example of this single colour approach is the ‘White Garden’ at Sissinghurst in the UK. If you’re up for a challenge give it a go, but perhaps instead try using two colours (plus green) to work with. This can be easier to manage and even more effective. A basic understanding of colour theory can help decide which colours sit well together. Popular contrasting and dramatic combinations are blue & white, red & yellow, purple & orange, and blue & yellow. Another approach is to combine soft colours – pastels – to create a wash of gentle colour without clashes. Looking at the natural landscape for inspiration is another great way to find colours that combine well. With a colour palette selected, use repetition of selected plants, flowers or coloured elements like pots, to set up a flow and rhythm within the garden to draw the eye and create a sense of depth. Culture Hit Cityscape explores the ancient monuments, royal cities, Buddhist temples and plentiful wildlife in Sri Lanka’s famed Cultural Triangle with Discover Travel’s Amanda Condon.
F
ast becoming one of the planet’s go-to destinations, Sri Lanka is an amazing jewel of a country with something to offer all travellers. With its history and culture spanning more than 2,000 years, there are numerous UNESCO-listed heritage sites to satisfy the history buff and a huge array of wildlife (elephants, leopards, monkeys and birds) to keep animal lovers happy, while stunning tea plantations in the mountains and epic surf beaches offer the perfect way to beat the heat and relax. We start our journey in the Cultural Triangle (crammed with UNESCO sites and formed by the trio of the historic capitals of Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa) at Sigiriya (or Sinhagiri), the spectacular ancient rock fortress. Visible for miles from

all directions, the monolithic rock/ancient castle built by King Kasyapa during the 5th Century AD rises 200 metres above the surrounding plains and is, fittingly, considered one of the Wonders of the Ancient World. The surrounding moats and walls are breathtakingly beautiful, and enhanced by the preservation of the Water Gardens. Only one half has been excavated, with the other half left for future generations of archaeologists to uncover. Having arrived early, we take a short visit through the museum for a brief overview of the history of Sigiriya and a glimpse of what to expect at the top of the climb – which definitely motivated us to continue through the Lion’s Gate and take the final steps to the top. The walk up Sigiriya is amazing,

The group of more than 200 elephants, ranging from sun-blocking bulls to tiny calves, is an unforgettable and humbling experience if slightly terrifying! Starting with a gentle stroll through the gardens and base of the rock, the 50 steps up (and then down again!) of the enclosed spiral staircase to the Mirrored Wall and world famous Sigiriya Frescoes is simply a warm-up to the final ascent. After conquering the climb, we are rewarded by the stunning views of Water Gardens and surrounding countryside. Exploring the ruins of the King’s upper palace, including cisterns cut into the rock and swimming baths, proves a fascinating way to steel ourselves before beginning our descent. Refreshingly, the site is almost completely free of hawkers; we only notice a few scattered towards the exit of the fortress. Our next stop within the Triangle is the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka’s best-planned archaeological sites. Within its walls, we explore the remains of palace buildings, temples and various other religious buildings which famously provided the backdrop to Duran Duran’s early 80s hit music video ‘Save a Prayer’. One of the city’s highlights is the massive Gal Vihara temple. Comprising four statues of Buddha carved directly into the face of a massive granite rock, it includes a person-dwarfing
4.6-metre-high seated figure decorated with lotus flowers, a smaller seated figure inside a cave, a standing figure almost 7 metres high, and the enormous 14-metre-long and iconic reclining Buddha. In search of Sri Lanka’s famed wildlife, we head to Minneriya National Park to check out its famous ‘elephant gathering’. It’s been labelled one of the world’s “10 greatest wildlife spectacles” by Lonely Planet, and boy, are they on the money! The group of more than 200 elephants, ranging from sunblocking bulls to tiny (by comparison) calves, is an unforgettable and humbling experience that we’ll be talking about for years to come. The near 90-square-kilometre verdant park features scrub forest and wetlands, offering the double whammy of stunning scenery (make sure the camera battery is charged!) and a myriad of wildlife. As well as the elephants, we spot the Donald-Trump-hairstyled endemic Old World monkeys Toque macaques, Sri Lankan Sambar deer, buffalo, and crocodiles. Plentiful birdlife includes little cormorants, herons, painted stalks and pelicans – all fishing in the shallow waters of the Minneriya Reservoir. Moving up the country and inland through Sri Lanka’s famed tea plantations, we arrive at the city of Kandy. A UNESCO Sri Lanka's wildlife is one of its major attractions.

Stunning views are to be found almost anywhere you turn.
World Heritage Site, Kandy is renowned for its beauty and pleasant climate. Feeling adventurous, we take an intrepid bus ride through the hills and suburbs (including a few knuckle-whitening close calls on the narrow roads), arriving at the hidden treasure trove of Sri Lankan antiques and curiosities that is the Suriyakantha Centre for Art & Culture. The ancient house of a village chief, it still maintains historic Dutch-style architecture and if you’re a history buff with a love of maps, this is the place for you. We balance the hair-raising bus ride with a pleasant tour of some of the 60 stunning hectares of the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens (once reserved for Kandyan royalty), which is bounded on three sides by a loop of the Mahaweli River. Kandy is also famous as home to the Temple of The Tooth (Dalada Maligawa), arguably Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist site, housing the relic of the tooth of Buddha. The sacred shrine receives many worshippers and tourists (hint: there are fewer tourists in the morning). Remember to wear clothes that cover your legs and shoulders, and remove your shoes. For a truly unique experience, spend a night or two mobile camping in Yala National Park. This incredible location has fantastic and knowledgeable staff who ensure you get to see the best of the wildlife, and don’t

go hungry (think four courses minimum for each meal!) With some of the adult male leopards known for brazenly walking around in daylight around these parts, our hopes were high for spotting one. While the legendary leopard remained elusive on our dusk and dawn safaris, we did get up close and personal with elephants, monkeys, spotted deer (a.k.a. leopard food!) and had a visit from a monitor lizard! Another highlight was Galle; the quaint Dutch town (famous among cricket fans) is encircled by fortress walls that give way to narrow cobbled streets – the perfect setting for enjoying interesting old buildings. The street markets are a spectacle of fresh fish, fruit stalls and ramshackle huts crammed with a huge array of spices and teas. Fittingly, the landmark lighthouse serves as a good point of reference during your exploration. Beyond Sri Lanka’s stunning sites, history and wildlife, there’s also the delicious food and array of teas. Now is the best time to discover spectacular Sri Lanka – enjoy the affordability and reasonably un-crowded cities before the rest of the world catches on! discovertravel.co.nz

“I shouldn’t admit to it, but the killing of Scarpia is thrilling!”
STAGE FIGHT
Cityscape caught up with Irish soprano and lead in New Zealand Opera’s Tosca, Orla Boylan, on the surprisingly athletic world of opera, killing co-stars, and social media. How does it feel coming back to New Zealand to reprise the lead in Tosca? I can’t wait to come back. Apart from being one of my favourite roles to sing, the production had everything I love about my job in it. Wonderful design and costumes coupled with a traditional and glamorous idea in direction. I also get the chance to brush up on my stunt work! Are there any elements of the character you’d like to explore further second time around? There are always new corners to visit, even in a production that I’ve done before, but they are usually more of an introverted nature than for an audience. It’s really important for me to fully inhabit a role, and any chance I get to deepen my relationship with a character I will go there. I couldn’t say of one element though, it’s more of a holistic thing (note use of current buzz-word!). It looks like you get quite physical with a cross and a co-star – what sort of training/choreography do you have to do for this? I was very lucky to be trained by the fantastic Dane and Dayna Grant stunt company. It was a real challenge to achieve the suicide
jump at the end, but I was kept ultra-safe and comfortable throughout the whole period. I have to say it was terrifying and huge fun at the same time!

How do you prepare backstage? I like to stay as normal as possible. All singers have their own way of coping with live performance. I like to relax while being made-up. I’m not too chatty on first nights, but once the show is up and running, it’s nice to have a bit of dressing room banter. What’s the hardest part about performing the role of Tosca? The most important part for me is the pacing of the whole piece. The role of Tosca is quite sustained all the way through, right up to the last note, and I need to make sure I have enough puff to give a feeling of consistent acceleration to an end-game. Tell us about your favourite scene. I shouldn’t admit to it, but the killing of Scarpia is thrilling! The adrenaline rush in the build-up through the scene and in the climactic end is something not to be missed. It’s one of those moments as an opera-singer where you can unleash yourself on stage. I would say it’s very cathartic. I’m actually really a very gentle person. Wink, wink! You played Lady Billows in Benjamin Britten’s comic opera Albert Herring last year and were described by a reviewer as “utterly terrifying”; is it fun to get stuck into a more villainous role? It’s the best fun! Lady B is terrifying but hilarious, and needs to be played that way. I loved finding the right face for her. Someone said I was a cross between Hyacinth Bucket and Patrick Moore ... high praise indeed!

What’s your most memorable moment on stage? It hasn’t happened very often, but if someone has forgotten their words (myself included!) I just find that the funniest thing ever! It turns into that moment when you really can’t laugh and therefore feel the need to laugh loudest. Belly-laughs are the best medicine for stress! Do you ever wonder where you might have ended up if you’d completed your PhD in Botany? Sometimes. The opera business has become dog-eat-dog in recent years. I’m a good singer, but not a good mover and shaker. I’ve always relied on agents to do that, but in the world of social media we, as singers, have to sell ourselves just like other people supplying a service. I don’t think botanists have the same worries! What are you looking forward to doing when you’re offstage in Christchurch? I won’t have much time but there are 2 days off at some stage, so I will hire a car and go wherever my nose takes me. Maybe someone will join me in a vineyard search!
