WORD ON THE STREET Montreal Street is set to get well lush with the opening of super glam Hotel Montreal in early October. The luxurious boutique destination features just 25 rooms and a 3-bedroom penthouse, Argentine sharing dishes in the Polo Bar and croquet in the gardens with plans for an open-air theatre. Get ready for the next phase in the city’s foodie landscape as plans for a container food hub emerge for the bare site at the intersection of Victoria and Salisbury Streets. The proposed Christchurch Adventure Park could see the Port Hills space between Dyers Pass, Worsleys and Summit Roads home to downhill routes, a chairlift, zip lines and a mountain coaster. Baked artisan goodness has arrived in Woolston with the Terra Viva Café & Deli crew opening Terra Viva Bake in the old Holy Smoke site, and find homemade happiness at Claude’s Kitchen on Ferry Road. Patrons of the arts can paint and imbibe at the new Paint ’n’ Sip Studio in Ilam, or just imbibe at super chilled The Wine Bar on Papanui Road or Dragons Den Social Lounge on Colombo Street. Johnny Schwass’ Mrs Hucks T Room has moved into the old Edesia site, and it’s good to see @Tony’s, Chinwag Eathai and Procopé Café back where they belong on Riccarton Road and Victoria Street respectively. As we went to print, White House Black on Halswell Road was about to open.
WHAT’S COOKIN’? Looking to up your kitchen game? The new specialist luxury kitchen showroom Lifestyle Appliances on Moorhouse Avenue is cornering itself as the premium kitchen destination. BY DESIGN Cityscape caught up with former Christchurch lad and renowned Nonn designer Cameron Foggo during a recent trip home. What brings you back? I’m here working on some exciting furniture prototypes. How’s Christchurch looking? Every time I return home I really analyse what has changed. I think it’s now starting to get exciting to see the progress, the growth and people on the street generally being more upbeat. Do you have a design aesthetic? I want my designs to be relevant in 20 or 50 years’ time, and for this reason I try not to get too caught up in the latest and greatest. Generally I’m drawn to mid-century design and materials, which I think provide a degree of timelessness. What follows industrial chic? It’s a generalisation, but I think we will see a move towards a look that whilst remaining eclectic, will be much more elegant. I think we will continue to see a lot of older buildings being stripped back to their bones to expose the imperfections and charter of the materials, but that the items placed into the space will be more elegant and refined. What’s next for Nonn? We are about to start work on a new lounge chair that I’m calling the Chianti chair. I think this will be a defining piece in the ‘Nonn’ collection.
GETTING ARTY 06
etiquette
ATM SPACE Space invaders be warned, this is not the place to get gettin’ all up in someone’s grill. ATMs are a shrine where secret numbers and life savings converge, you’ll wanna give the person in front of you a wide berth (and expect the same of the person behind you). Imagine yourself lying down behind the person in front (possibly after being KO’d for huffing over their shoulder) and you should be aiming to stand about where your lifeless head would be lolling. Avoid checking onscreen balances or worse, printing one out then deliberating on how much to withdraw; whipping out multiple cards – it’s one card/transaction per queue, go back to the start, don’t collect $200 – and keep it schtum. Much like a bank robbery, everyone just wants to get in and out in and they don’t wanna hear all about about your cat’s cataracts while they’re at it.
WELL HUNG What’s hangin’ in Christchurch’s art galleries? Join us on the Cityscape arts crawl. With the big fences still up around our centrepiece art gallery, what’s an art-lovin’ citizen to do? Sure, we’re all itching to get back in there (current ETA on that: towards the end of 2015!), but there are still plenty of options around the city just crying out to receive your best critically-appraising gazes – here’s our picks. Bryce Gallery Regularly rotating selection of exhibitions and works from emerging, established and investment artists. Jonathan Smart Gallery Specialists in contemporary New Zealand art. ArtBox What it says on the tin – a temporary space aimed at bringing art back into the central city. Auricle Sonic gallery and wine bar matching sound and wine. Arts Central Portacom opposite the Peterborough Street Central Library showcasing works from over 20 local artists. Hit the streets! The RISE festival has left plenty of amazing street art around the central city – keep an eye out for new installation works popping up as well.

FESTIVALS Spring is all about celebration – it’s also the start of the festival season and offers a gazillion opportunities to become a social media statistic. Here’s how to whoop it up and make it through the day and/or into the night unscathed – Cityscape style. Remember, no matter how good you looked, how many grannies you helped cross the road, or how many puppies you saved from burning buildings during the day, if you toss your cookies in the parking lot or suffer a booze-induced nip slip later, that’s all anyone’s gonna remember. First thing's first – be your own best friend and ward off sunstroke and killer hangovers by slapping on some sunscreen. Enjoy the occasional glass of water (hydration is key, people – beer is not a water substitute!) and wash a pre-emptive painkiller down with an electrolyte drink before calling it a day. Public loos on the cards? Throw a travel hand sanitiser in your purse/pocket – you’ll be praising Jesus, Ganesh and Allah for that heavenly antiseptic filth-buster when things get ugly near the end. Rock some headgear, whether wacky or tres chic – a hat will not only keep off the sun, but give your besties something to spot in the crowd. Finally, layer up – the weather can get real, real-quick yeah? Give yourself some ensemble options.

FASH-ON Cityscape hits up EnCompass’ lad about town and renowned jeanius Benji (Martin Benjamin) on what’s hot and happening for spring fashion. What are this season’s must-have pieces? Essential piece for the guys is the Bouverie & Co. Short Sleeve College Hoodie. For girls, they want the Lola vs Harper Splice Tee Dress. Expect to see a lot of floral print denim vests for both sexes. Who’s the designer to look out for? Definitely Fili Custom Design Shirts – a hot Christchurch designer combining amazing fabrics and unbelievable construction to create a cohesive look in menswear. How did you become a jeanius? Through hard work. If you like what you do, you keep at it and keep trying to improve. What’s the golden rule to rockin’ denim? Get what fits your body shape – not this silly ‘what’s in fashion’. What are the denim don’ts? There aren’t any. What’s the next big thing in denim? A continuation of amazing fabrics and silhouettes for men and women.

THE CHILL Looking for the ultimate in relaxation and perfection in pampering? Behold Beauty at The Tannery’s out of this world (seriously, check out their equipment – time to get your hypersleep on, Ripley!) premium spa experience, the Monticelli Mud Treatment. Comprising 90 exquisite minutes, this deeply restorative, detoxifying process in the hydro capsule starts with a pre-steam and full body exfoliation, before you're cocooned in creamy thermal Italian mud. For the ultimate bliss-out, add a relaxation massage to the mix and ascend the heavens. www beautyatthetannery.co.nz
RAISING THE BARS
The weather’s warming up – leave the scarf and woolly hat at home (but keep that jacket close to hand – it’s only spring and it’s still Christchurch, after all) and venture outdoors for a drop or two at these top spots for an outdoor tipple. Drink up at Smash Palace, No. 4, Nucleus, The Dirty Land, The Rock (Sumner), Baretta (pictured), Cargo Bar, Civil and Naval, Governors Bay Hotel (go beer garden or deck) Strange’s Lane, Winnie Bagoes (either), Harlequin Public House, Dux Dine, Astro Lounge, Freemans (Lyttelton) or The Brewery at The Tannery.
MEXICAN CURE-ALL
With the party scene and festival circuit cranking up over the warmer months, it’s quite likely (read: inevitable) that you’re gonna wake up hung-to-the-ova with a head that feels like a baby elephant has been taking tap lessons on it overnight. Take your cuisine cues and cures South of the Border (seriously, if anyone knows hangovers, it’s the creators of tequila, right?) and hit up some Chilaquiles, the sure-fire Mexican feast of hung-over champions. Consisting of fried tortillas simmered in a volcanic salsa, topped with avocado, pulled chicken and cheese, and served with refried beans, it's just about the most perfect hangover cure ever! Alvarado’s Mexican Cantina chef Ana Flores says the secret is in the sauce, and the hotter the better. “You want it to make you sweat.” www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

OWN THIS CITY CYCLING
Road Warriors An iconic marker in Kiwi cycling, Scotty Browns Bike Emporium chalks up 21 years of owning the Christchurch scene in November. Helmed by formidable local cycling legend and noted philanthropist Scotty Brown himself, the Emporium is a cyclist's dream store and veritable wall-to-wall showcase of the planet’s best bikes (think Santa Cruz, Carrera, Pinarello, Cervélo …), offering bespoke one-of-a-kind über-spec'd custom creations for beginners through to elite athletes, as well as the latest accessories (including an Oakley Custom Lab), clothing and products dropped on the daily, with industry-leading servicing to boot. Working to the mantra ‘service and passion’, hyper-experienced cycle-mad staff make no apologies for being the best and ensuring that customers are never left wanting more – that’s just how they roll!
RIDE ON! Can’t think of a reason to start cycling? Here’s five guaranteed to get you pushing the pedals. Wind back the clock Regular cycling can protect skin against UV radiation and reduce the signs of ageing by optimising collagen production – essentially ironing out the appearance of wrinkles from the inside! Just don’t forget to slap on the 30+ or it’ll all be for naught! Get smart Cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus – the area responsible for memory which, FYI, starts deteriorating once you hit the big 3-0. Save the planet It takes around 5 per cent of the materials and energy to build a bike than knock out a car, bikes produce zero pollution and then there’s that whole peak oil thing. Sex it up Cranking up your vascular health will, if you’re a man, help crank up your boudoir performance and, if you’re a woman, help stave off menopause. Live the high life Cycling helps release feel-good hormones (endorphins) into the frontal and limbic regions of the brain (AKA the storage area for emotional baggage).
The Drill Cityscape taps into the pedal-powered minds of the cool catz at Scotty Browns for some insider knowledge on the cycling scene.
What’s the latest cycling innovation getting you guys excited? One of the latest things to really start looking like there’s going to be a shift is disc brakes on road bikes. Although the UCI (cycling governing body) has not as yet let these into the race scene, there is huge horsepower through investment and R&D now so look out, road bikes with disc brakes are coming soon! What’s trending in cycling fashion? Fluro is making a BIG comeback! Yes ... it’s totally OK to ride in fluro, maybe not hi viz, but yes, fluro is totally in! Where are the best mountain bike tracks? For hard-core riders it’s all about the Flying Nun track below the Sign of the Kiwi. For amazing views and a sweet ride you wanna hit up the Traverse Track that follows the road around in the Port Hills, and the new Christchurch bike park planned for the Port Hills is gonna to be off the hook!
cycling masterclass Just taken up cycling and looking for a few pointers? You need to jump on Scotty Browns' Cycling 101 masterclass, which covers off on everything from bike assembly, fixing a puncture, brake and gear adjustment to cleaning and oiling your drivechain and preride safety checks – hit up their Facebook page for the deets.

OWN THIS CITY TO THE SEA
To THE sea They’re the perfect antidote to the stresses of the city, easily accessible but just far enough away to realign the chakras and forget your cares – behold Cityscape’s top seascapades. Gazing out over the ocean is one of life’s great stabilisers – whether it’s grabbing a quick coffee (or something a little more therapeutic), indulging in some well-earned pampering, embracing a gastronomic getaway or a back-to-nature waterfront hike, you’ll find it all right here on our doorstep.
LYTTELTON Wearing its godlessness on its sleeve, Lyttelton is a Mecca for free-thinking creative types where a bustling Saturday morning farmer’s market joins funky bars like Civil & Naval, Porthole Bar and the legendary Wunderbar, a lauded record label, and a super lax setting where casual Indian eatery Everest sits alongside one of the country’s leading lights in the ethical/local/seasonal food movement, the multi award-winning Roots Restaurant. Take a cooking class with cuisine queen Jenny Garing, walk the well-worn Bridle Path like the early Canterbury settlers, jump on the Black Cat and take the express route to Diamond Harbour or explore the former leper colony (now white-flippered penguin haven) of Quail Island.
Sumner A short drive from the city centre, Sumner’s chilled village vibe ensures you’re miles from care, seductively wrapping fine fare, slick bars, intriguing boutiques and exquisite pampering in a sunny seaside setting. For a sun-drenched day at the beach, al fresco dining at Clink, The Cornershop Bistro, The Rock Café or Salt Bar & Café, seaside sundowners at the Beach Bar, an ol’ skool cinema experience at the delightfully anachronistic Hollywood 3, a soul-restoring escape at Renaissance Spa or a chic French-infused weekend away at Le Petit Hotel – Sumner’s a hard act to beat. Those with a more adventurous spirit can explore myriad walks, three types of surfing (regular, wind and kite), mountain biking and paragliding.
Check out the local talent on display at Tin Palace (13A Oxford Street), an 1880s corrugated iron-clad heritage building/art space featuring a monthly showcase of local artists.
Governors Bay Punching well above its weight in the gastronomic stakes, this charming settlement is home to some primo nosh. Combining exquisite gastro-pub style fare with killer Lyttelton Harbour views, Governors Bay Hotel (below left) is perfect for a romantic dinner, an afternoon in the sun in the garden bar or watching the sun set out on the deck. Across the road you’ll find chocoholic heaven – She Universe Café & Chocolaterie, where chocolate alchemist Oonagh Brown (Christchurch’s answer to Chocolat’s Vivianne Rocher) weaves her decadent, black cacao magic and runs a popular series of chocolate classes. Further around you’ll find the adventure land and events centre of Living Springs, while over in Charteris Bay Preserved Cook School is reviving the heritage arts of salting, fermenting, curing, preserving and pickling. Teeming with birdlife and boasting stunning harbour views, the prisonerbuilt Foreshore Road Walkway is an easy 40 minute amble between Governors Bay wharf and Allandale Reserve.

DIAMOND HARBOUR
Also known as the sunny side of Lyttelton Harbour, Diamond Harbour's naming rights become apparent when you catch the sun hitting the water just right to create a sea of shimmering diamonds. Just a 40 minute drive or 7 minute ferry ride away, food is also a drawcard here, with two renowned cafés Chalfont Café and Bar (look for the life size replica Spitfire!) and Godley Café (the container rebirth of once popular Godley House) turning out home-baked goodness in this peaceful oasis that's perfect for a spring tipple. Take a trot along the Cliff Track through old pines for some jaw-slackening views of Purau and out to the Heads of Lyttelton Harbour, then follow the locals down to the wharf when the fishing boats come in to buy just-caught fresh fish. Making a day of it? Take the scenic route back via Geddes Pass, stopping for an obligatory ice cream/afternoon tea at the historic Blue Duck Café.
Gastronomic Highway
Take the scenic route and indulge your foodie bent along the gastronomic highway, taking in the Lyttelton Farmers Market and on to The Store @ Tai Tapu, Kingfisher Smoke House in Takamatua, and Barrys Bay Cheese in Duvauchelle before sampling the local pride at Akaroa’s Meniscus Wine Lounge.
Looking for the ultimate escape? Shunyata Retreat and Day Spa combines a trifecta of mind, body and soul healing with unique boutique stays tailored to each visitor’s specific needs.
Akaroa The French-cut gem in Banks Peninsula’s crown, Akaroa’s tiny township offers up an enticing Tour de France-themed getaway where white picket fences and cottage gardens join a bounty of waterfront cafés, bars, restaurants and a cooking school all housed in a stunning natural setting. Glittering Akaroa Harbour, home to the world’s smallest dolphin – the Hector’s Dolphin – also serves up such activities as sailing, fishing, kayaking and diving, while those preferring terra firma underfoot can check out the four/two-day Banks Peninsula Track spanning volcanic coastline, native bush and remote beaches. THE HIT LIST Cycle or hike along the picturesque Little River Trail, overnight at the super unique Silo Stays and hunt for precious stones and gems on the stunning Birdlings Flat beach.

Now the hub of a wider Merivale retail fashion district, the mall itself is the ideal base camp for a serious window-shopping expedition, while the surrounding streets house an eclectic, high end mix of drinking, dining and ever more designer fashion.

Artisans Cityscape finds out what’s cookin’ in the Terra Viva Café and Deli kitchen with head
What’s the Terra Viva food philosophy? Being very much attached to a garden centre we have a strong belief in the ethos of farm to table. How did the gourmet line come about? I have been really lucky to have a great boss who is passionate about food and two amazing sous chefs in Nicky Ward & Su Gaunlin (Lin) who all believe: why buy it when you can make it? What’s your biggest seller? It’s a tossup between our hot smoked salmon and chicken liver pâté. What’s the secret to your Smokey Tomato Ketchup? There’s a reason it’s secret. What’s one product that should be in every Christchurch home? Our Tomato Compote, it is very versatile and it’s always on our menu – if you haven’t tried it yet come in for a taste! Describe your 7 years at Terra Viva in three words: I LIVE HERE!

New kid on the block, ilex is the sparkly new facility in the Botanic Gardens dragging Gran’s garden glasshouse kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Outside the city limits, school camp staple Living Springs has expanded its repertoire to include a sweet back to nature function centre.

HIP HOPS Home brewing is getting super fancy with enthusiasts going so far as to make their own labels, adding exotic creations and winning national awards – so what gives? Paul Finney, founder of the Christchurch Home Brew Club and owner of Finney’s Homebrew Emporium, says craft beer is the main driver. Not just content with turning out a quality drop, Paul says today’s home brewers are sourcing rare and exotic ingredients and custom-making their own brewing equipment while chasing the holy grail of “launching our beer commercially”. No stranger to pushing the exotic ingredient envelope, Paul has added marshmallows, bacon, Cadbury Creme Egg, KFC, pumpkin (also fermented in a pumpkin!) to his brews in his store’s monthly Facebook challenge – clearly there are some creations that only the brewer could love (we’re looking at you bacon beer!). www.finneyshomebrew.co.nz

Hammersley’s Thai concentrates on the finer side of dining Thai-style, with spacious seating, comfortable chairs, and friendly ambience. The smaller but busy Chang Thai meets local demand for quality Thai food in an enjoyable environment. Both are ideal for everything from a relaxing meal for one through to banquets for groups. You’ll find an impressive selection of authentic, reasonablypriced Thai dishes, also available as takeaways. Comprehensive menus are available and you can book online at their joint website. If you love the flavours of Thailand, then Hammersley’s Thai and Chang Thai are the places for you!

SHAPE UP: HIIT With Alice Stolpe, Les Mills Personal Trainer
Looking to burn more fat in your workout? High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), the fitness industry buzzword du jour, could be your salvation. Alternating between periods of short intense exercise and recovery, HIIT trains your body to adapt to greater stimulus. While working at a higher level of intensity than what it is accustomed to, the body uses its anaerobic system (without oxygen) to operate off of the energy stored in the muscles as its main source of energy. This creates lactic acid. During the rest phase, your lungs and heart work to breakdown the lactic acid while simultaneously working to return oxygen levels back to a resting state. At this level of intense training, your body will be changing carbohydrates into energy and burning even more calories post-workout in order to return to baseline levels, compared with longer, low intensity workouts. Remember, your body will drastically change when confronted with something it has to drastically change for!

THE GOOD LIFE With Dr Libby
As spring arrives we can shift our focus to the things that uplift us – the factors that make us feel good. They don’t have to be complex. Often the more easily accessible the better. What you focus on is what you feel, so make a conscious choice to feel good and utilise these techniques to assist you and your health will love you for it. Appreciate the simple things It has been clinically proven it is impossible to feel stressed or overwhelmed when you feel gratitude. It is so easy to fixate on the aspects of our life we wish to improve or change, but looking at what makes you feel grateful and is available all day, every day can have the most profound effect on your perspective.
Soul food If you find yourself in the pantry thinking ‘I want something but I don’t know what that something is?’, you are often searching for soul food and not physical food – particularly if you ate a main meal not long before your quest! Many people link food to comfort, not a form of nourishment, and they can no longer identify other sources where they can obtain this feeling of comfort they are after. Consciousness is crucial when eating. If you find yourself looking for soul food every night at a particular time ask yourself the question ‘what do I really want and is this really about food?’. Move for your mind Although in some instances it may be the last thing you
feel like doing, exercise is a guaranteed way to enhance your mood and get all those feel good factors circulating. Exercising is particularly beneficial in the morning as melatonin, your sleep hormone, plummets when the retina is exposed to light and as a result, your serotonin – your happy, calm and content hormone – surges. Movement also produces hormones called endorphins, which aid in reducing the production of stress hormones, and is one of the fastest ways to increase your energy levels. Feel good foods There are numerous foods linked with enhancing mood – the most famous, of course, being chocolate. Dark chocolate in particular is high in the amino acid tryptophan. Tryptophan is one of 10 essential amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. It serves as a precursor for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps the body regulate appetite, sleep patterns, and mood. Foods naturally high in tryptophan include seafood, nuts, seeds and vegetables (broccoli and legumes). Eating a wholefood diet rich in green vegetables and plant fats can make all the difference between feeling sluggish and heavy or energised. The power a healthy diet can have on all never ceases to amaze me. www.drlibby.com
DID YOU KNOW? Around 90 per cent of the serotonin in the body is actually
FLOWER POWER
Cityscape takes a floral master class with Aromaunga Flowers’ Elisabeth Marsh and Hannah Marsh Dore. Whats hot for spring? We find plum and cherry blossoms are quite overlooked and can make a beautiful seasonal display. Coloured freesias, anemones, tulips, stock, antirrhinums, alstroemeria and ranunculus are always hard to pass up. What inspires your creations? Just looking outside! The seasons are always encouraging us to create – nature is constantly changing and producing new, beautiful things. Unsung heroes? A big one for us is fennel. The fragrance and bright umbrella of florets lend perfectly to unstructured, garden arrangements. Golden rule of flower arranging? Cherish the creation. If you find it beautiful, fragrant or colourful who can tell you otherwise? Tips for cut flower care? Purchase where you know they are fresh and locally sourced. An important care regime is re-cutting stems and freshening water frequently.
in the gut, not the brain.
The Apprentice
Cityscape talks to True Grit apprentice and World Skills finalist Ashlee Van Wijk who is in the running to represent NZ in Brazil.
What’s your strategy? Absolutely work my butt off! Early nights, early rises and a healthy diet. Like training for the Olympics, I plan on eating, breathing, singing, humming and dreaming hairdressing. What does your training involve? Before World Skills I had hardly used a pair of scissors! I’ve been taught how to create the original Day Style cut and given fantastic tips. What’s your secret weapon? I’m really excellent at making sure every strand of hair is exactly where it should be. What sets you apart from the competition? I don’t just work 9 hours a day. I go home and continue to work 6 days out of 7. My walls are covered in ideas, concepts, and motivational quotes. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

STYLE Guru By Paul Dean of Sergios
A good fit is key to owning your wardrobe. Don’t buy a garment that you’re not 100% happy with in the shop thinking it will fit better after a wash or the old classic: “I’m planning on losing weight”. It’s time to put the garment down, step away and try something else. It’s time to get a little reckless: choose a colour or pattern that you may have discounted as an option. You never know, it could become a new favourite! Whether it’s jeans, shoes or a well-made tailored garment, if it doesn’t fit correctly it will never be right and you’ll never enjoy wearing it. Be fussy – try to ignore patterns and cosmetic finishes on the garments you are looking at. You can always come back to this – try them first, see how it fits, see how it feels and then decide if the pattern is an issue, if the colour is right. Remember, you’ll never get tired of a well-fitting garment.

CS LIVING live, life, love WATCH The Past Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. Following a fouryear separation, Ahmad (Ali Mosaffa) returns to Paris from Tehran in order to finalise a divorce from his estranged French wife, Marie (Bérénice Bejo). During his stay, Ahmad discovers tensions in Marie’s relationship with her daughter, but his attempt to build bridges between them creates conflict with her new partner, Samir (Tahar Rahim), and soon unveils a secret from the past. Directed by Academy Award winner Asghar Farhadi (A Separation) and featuring an unforgettable central performance by Bejo (The Artist) that earned her the Best Actress award at Cannes 2013, The Past is an engrossing, tight-knit family drama as gripping as any thriller Alices has seen this year.
LISTEN We Rise, Devilskin Review by Chris Mooar at Pennylane Records. Hailing from The ‘Tron, Rock radio favourites Devilskin are hot property right now and their debut We Rise is a scorcher. Devilskin are a class hard rock act. Singer Jennie Skulander can shred her vocal chords one second with a terrifying back-of-the-throat growl, then the next lift her voice with a seemingly effortless sweetness. She is Devilskin’s ace card. We Rise is three singles deep already and there is no reason they won’t pull a further three. Rockin’, urgent, epic and catchy as hell, We Rise is world class. Make sure you see them live too.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? BODY FESTIVAL Our city’s celebration of all things dance, the Body Festival, returns bigger and better than ever this year, with 23 days of performance, workshops, and have-a-go events and challenges for everyone from practised floor-burner-uppers to reluctant wallflowers to get stuck into. The festival kicks off with a dance party at 6am – finally, a chance to get your breakfast rave on – before launching into a schedule jam-packed with variety in over 20 venues around the city. Have-a-go highlights include Speed Dancing (which offers the opportunity to try 8 dance styles in just 2 hours), getting your Mr Darcy on at the Regency Dance workshop and unleashing your inner Fred Astaire to tap up a storm. There’s also the inaugural Do a Little Dance Workplace Dance Challenge throwing down the gauntlet to 30 city businesses to down tools at least 10 minutes a week and put a routine together before a big Workplace Dance-off. In the performance programme, big shows include the risqué Inflagrante, the South Island Salsa Competition and the cheeky 50s-inspired Domestic Goddesses. Body Festival, 19 Sep – Sun 12 Oct www.thebody.co.nz
BODY TORQUE with Body Festival director Adam Hayward What’s this year’s theme? The key message for the festival is that it’s ‘all right to dance’. How would you describe this year’s line up? It’s our most comprehensive and diverse programme to date. It’s quantity, but without compromising on quality. What can we expect? 18 world premieres, a 6am dance party, a corporate dance off, and we’re bringing back speed dancing (think speed dating but meeting 8 dances in two hours).
BEST IN SHOW Expect thrills, frills and spills when Canterbury’s biggest party, New Zealand Cup and Show Week, trots into town from 8 – 15 November. Culminating with the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup, one of the country’s racing highlights, the stakes for the coveted Fashions on the Field title run as high as those on the big race. www.theshow. co.nz and www.nzcupandshow.co.nz
