FASHION EXPRESS Christchurch designer Georgia Currie is on the fast track to joining fashion royalty.

Taking out the 2014 DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship and tipped as Kiwi fashion’s next Karen Walker, Christchurch’s Georgia Currie is cutting up the fashion scene with her signature label Georgia Alice. Establishing herself as New Zealand’s top emerging fashion exporter, Georgia’s coveted label is dedicated to cool, classic and creative pieces, and she’s quickly becoming the crush-worthy go-to designer among New Zealand’s ‘it girls’. Having featured in Australian Vogue, Australian Elle, Russh, Oyster and on international blog The Man Repeller you’ll find Georgia’s handiwork lining the racks at 24 stockists worldwide including New York, LA and right here in Christchurch at Infinite Definite. Graduating in 2011 from CPIT with a diploma in fashion technology and design, Georgia was spurred on after winning the Westpac Young Designer Award (see a pattern?) in her graduation year before hightailing it up to Auckland and launching the label. Identifying a gap in the market she went about carving out a label known for its strong contours and man-style aesthetic. So where to next on the stratospheric rise of this bright young thing? “I would love to have an internationally recognised brand, she says. “I plan on taking it to the ends of the earth!” www.georgiaalice.com

URBAN

ETIQUETTE MARKET VALUE

Christchurch’s vibrant range of farmers’ and artisan markets offer a summer breeze on your face, a good stroll, well-priced super fresh food, low food miles and unique finds every weekend. Cityscape puts in the hard yards to bring you the what to go for and where. Held every Sunday at Riccarton Park from 9am – 2pm, The Riccarton Market (pictured) is the mothership of markets, rocking no fewer than 300 stalls selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to second hand goods, furniture and food and beverages including local beers and wines – yes, there are tastings. Run by the Riccarton Rotary Club, profits go back into the community, so there’s good karma with the bargains. Also in Riccarton you’ll find the Christchurch Farmers’ Market at Riccarton House Bistro (16 Kahu Road) from 9am – 1pm every Saturday and the Sunday Artisan Market (from 10am) at the same venue the following day. For a seaside escape, head to the weekly Sumner Sunday Market (10am – 2pm) at 16 Wakefield Avenue where vintage wares, artworks, and antiques join culinary delights and live entertainment, or head portside to the regular foodie haunt that is the Lyttelton Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday from 10am – 1pm on London Street for a stellar collection of gourmet goodies, interesting off-shoot markets and awesome busking action. Over at the Opawa/St Martins Farmers’ Market (275 Fifield Terrace) you’ll discover an impressive selection of fresh local produce including locally made Italian cheeses and a large organic selection, each Sunday from 9am – 12pm. The Lincoln Farmers’ and Craft Market combines a friendly community buzz with a swag of gourmet offerings and art and crafts each Saturday from 10am – 1pm on Gerald Street and a special super-sized offering on the first Saturday of each month.

ORDERING A DRINK Just making your way to the bar can sometimes be an ordeal, but the next hurdle, actually getting served, can often be an excruciating test of endurance. So how do you lock and load in record time? First off, dispense with the dick moves – don’t wave cash around like some fool Power Ball player that finally got lucky – you don’t wanna be that guy or, heaven forbid, that woman; likewise don’t push, holla, click or get all bajiggity – you will be ignored (seriously, it’s barkeep karma 101 – would you serve you?). Put down the phone, wait your turn, be polite, stand up straight and make eye contact. Chuck in a half smile if you want and you’ll be chopping back your poison of choice in no time!

THE FIRST LADI

Cityscape jams with legendary local soul and hip hop heroine Ladi6 (Karoline Tamati) ahead of a sizzling summer schedule. What’s it like coming back to Christchurch? It’s familiar, its home. What can we expect from your Electric Avenue set? I don’t know yet, we haven’t sorted it, but it’ll be fun and dance-filled. Who are you most looking forward to sharing the stage with? Electric Wire Hustle and Cairo Knife Fight. What’s the best thing about summer in Christchurch? Those Nor’westers at night time. Where’s your fave after dark haunt? Hmm … There’s so many new spots now, but probably still my uncle and aunty’s place on Pages (Road). What’s on the cards for Ladi6 in 2015? So many things, but mainly new music in February is where it will begin for us. Catch Ladi6 at Electric Avenue Music Festival in Hagley Park on 6 Feb www.electricavenuefestival.co.nz

NEW YEARS EVE Let’s face it, it's probably one of the most over-hyped nights on the calendar where the ridiculously high expectations of having a good time are not only seldom met, but often cripple any chance of remotely enjoying yourself. Fortunately, help is at hand … To avoid inevitable disappointment set the bar low – 20cm off the ground should do it. Expect to spend the night trying to get where you’re going, lose your friends, watch people celebrate from the other side of the glass while you're lined up on the sidewalk and leg it home at 3am. By comparison, any outcome slightly better than this will feel like the best NYE ever! If you’re planning on hitting two parties, don’t make the cool party the second stop – you won’t get there. Instead, you’ll be stuck playing charades with Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer while Ecosmith’s Cool Kids plays on loop. If you’re heading to a venue, unless you have a sober driver or are staying local, you’re gonna want to get there early before the great migration (see ‘set the bar low’ for reasoning); likewise when heading home if you want to get in before the sun comes up (it’s pretty much downhill after midnight anyway, right?). Unfortunately the pain of NYE doesn’t end the next day – many of you will be nursing stonking hangovers. Recover by drinking water, eating a cooked breakfast and, contrary to popular belief, avoiding coffee and/or more alcohol.

OWN THIS CITY SKIN DEEP

GOING FROM TABOO TO TRENDY, TATTOOS NOW SPAN GENERATIONS, GENDERS AND SOCIAL IDENTITIES – CITYSCAPE FINDS OUT WHAT GIVES, ALONG WITH THE WHERE AND WHY OF GETTING INKED IN CHRISTCHURCH. Once the domain of sailors (we’re looking at you Popeye!), jailbirds, gangs and representing a misspent youth, tattoos are no longer relegated to the realm of counter culture. Personalised etchings and tribal markings are everywhere we look. They adorn our sporting heroes (Sonny Bill Williams, David Beckham), Hollywood idols (Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp), supermodels (Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss), musicians (Rihanna, Adam Levine) – even our police are now acceptably inked. “Tattooing has been around as long as skin, but celebrities did a lot to make it ‘normal’ and ‘okay’,” says The Ink Spot’s Steve Malley. “Because they’re in front of the cameras on TV and in the magazines, their ink spends a lot of time in front of your eyes, making it seem normal. And because they’re our heroes, having tattoos becomes okay.” The dubious tattoo parlours of yesteryear have made way for tattoo art studios where custom, fine art design is served in an ambiance of super hygenic, upscale cool and appointmentonly services are de-rigueur. Inside you’ll find artists talking through one-off design pieces with customers who could just as easily be perusing a custom jewellery store, fashion boutique, or high-end antique shop. Reasons for going under the needle are as varied as the people getting inked says

18

Christchurch Here & Now

Graphic Addiction’s Emma King. “It may be a memorial tattoo to commemorate the passing of a loved one. It may be used to disguise an unwanted scar,” says Emma. “It could be an avenue to display one’s personal beliefs or it may just be a natural human urge to decorate and beautify the body.” And like any art form, tattoos tend to have both trendy and stable styles, says Michelle Ross at City of Ink. “At the moment feathers, infinity symbols and silhouettes seem to be the new Playboy Bunny,” says Michelle. “Styles like Ta Moko (Maori tattoos), Japanese, realism, script and old-style traditional just stay popular no matter the era, while the favourite areas getting tattooed are currently on the arms, ribs and feet.” Tattoos to avoid, according to Otautahi Tattoo's Brad Cone, include faux tribal (think George Clooney's ink in From Dusk till Dawn). “The late 90s fad of big, black, thick ugly tribal tattoos ain't working. Having a tribal tattoo with no tribe ... fail!” For those looking to get inked, Southern Ink Tattoo’s Kerry Parkin suggests doing the legwork before getting the ink work. “As with any craft it takes time and practice to achieve great results. To become a great artist it takes years of practice and you never stop learning and growing. A good tattoo artist will apply your tattoo in a means that allows it to stand the test of time.”

Recent offerings on the regularly-updated menu include the angus rib eye steak with fondant potatoes, pickled vegetables, and rosemary jus, while if you’re looking for a fantastic lunch option on a weekend afternoon, it’s tough to go past the pulled pork sandwich with slaw and smoked capsicum aoli. Christchurch colonial history never tasted so delicious. www.riccartonhousebistro.co.nz

VIVA LA SUMMER Cityscape taps into the genius of The Dirty Land’s mixologist Zeke Haggart, who created this refreshing summer sessional Viva La Frida, naming it after the mono-browed beauty adorning the bar’s wall.

ROGUE TRADER Kicking stuffy gin stereotypes to the curb, Rogue Society Gin’s gritty sophistication rekindles the excitement and glamour of the roaring 20s for this now vogue former prohibition staple. Fusing the goodness of 12 botanicals, this artisan small batch tipple is no nanna’s drink (though we dare say she’d love it!). Distilled in CHCH (in a hand-beaten, 19th Century John Dore copper pot still no less!), glacial waters from the Southern Alps contribute to this super smooth drop where juniper and citrus flavours kick-start a party in your mouth. Hit tradition upside the head with a Rogue & Tonic, switching things up with a wedge of blood orange. Add all the ingredients and shake vigorously. Double strain over crushed ice and garnish with sliced apple and raspberries.

TWO OF A KIND In a celebration of all things summer, we join perennial fave Akaroa Salmon’s Hot Smoked Salmon (RRP $35.33/kg) with the local gourmet powder/flavour keg that is Mandys Horseradish Sauce (RRP $15.95/190g). The Pairing Bringing the heat with just the right amount of sweet, we mix the horseradish sauce with crème fraiche and plenty of chopped dill, slather over fresh crusty bread and top with the glistening coral-coloured, firm, sea-reared manuka woodchip-smoked fillet. Creamy, bright and fresh with a warming punch, the horseradish perfectly balances the clean, ocean-fresh elegance of the salmon which is quite possibly some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Totally addictive with the last serve likely to turn family members against each other – perfect for Christmas Day then!

CITYSCAPE FEELS THE LOVE WITH AROHA DRINKS’ MARK DILLON.

How did you become one of NZ’s best drink makers? I am really just trying to keep things as simple and natural as possible. What inspires your creations? I look for heritage fruits. Flavours that were used in beverages for centuries and have therefore proved their tastiness through the crucible of time. Who would you love to see drinking Aroha? To be honest, I get a kick when I see anyone drinking it. It justifies all the effort instantly. What are Vonnie Vegg? Pixies who live in the Elderflower trees. I have been keeping an eye out but have not seen any to date. They are famous in the Isle of Man where, to this day, people tip their hats to the Elder tree and it is illegal to chop one down. Fave Aroha summer cocktail? I’m going to be shooting for the Garden Martini. Perfect for lazy afternoons, it’s a double shot gin, double shot Aroha Elderflower Cordial, 4 shots apple juice, over ice with mint and lemon … Yummy! www.arohadrinks.co.nz

HOWZAT! Smashing it out of the park is the city’s spanking new events venue Hagley Oval Pavilion. The latest addition to the Vbase empire features a diverse events offering wrapped in a world-class sporting venue with sweeping views spanning the cricket oval and tree-fringed Hagley Park to boot. Hosting the opening match and welcoming ceremony for the ICC World Cricket Cup between New Zealand and Sri Lanka on February 14, we’re picking this killer new venue is going to be bowling more than just the cricketers over.

The Colombo, 363 Colombo Street, Sydenham 03 379 8377 www.potsticker.co.nz Open: 7 days 9:30am – 5:30pm (or until sold out)

It was a mad obsession that drove local boy Sam Hooper back to Christchurch earlier this year with a mission to serve Cantabrians the best dumplings in the land. He set out to match the best of Kiwi attitude with traditional Chinese dumpling-making methods... and his team are nailing it. Pot Sticker is the street name for pan-fried dumplings, although at Pot Sticker Dumpling Bar you can also have your dumplings steamed. What you won’t get are pre-made dumplings from a machine. Everything is handmade with an obsession for detail and quality. Norman, the dumpling master, hand-makes the dumpling dough, chops all the locally sourced vegetables and herbs, and selects the free-range meat on a daily basis using techniques learned through his 30 years of dumpling-making in Shanghai. Even the MSG-free chili sauce is handmade using a recipe passed down from generation to generation. The team obsess over dumplings day and night behind the glass wall at Pot Sticker under the watchful eye of the dumpling master. If you’re as serious about eating legendary dumplings, then head down and watch them experimenting with new flavours, including their famous Dessert Wonton.

CLASS ACT Not able to push yourself into exercising with the required regularity? Often it’s all too easy to cut yourself some slack – repeatedly – so step up the accountability levels with a group fitness class. There’s nothing like a lil’ peer pressure from the group to make you pick up your game or take the shame if you’re busted cutting class. A sense of camaraderie makes group fitness classes a great place to make friends, and will keep you enthused, on target and pushing those personal performance boundaries. It’s a full body and great cardio workout, and you’re tapped into expert instruction, while the sense of energy, motivation and (typically) a pumping soundtrack mean things won’t get boring, either.

Christchurch Here & Now

It’s fair to say that the dust has now settled in Christchurch and the city rebuild is well and truly underway. As the city transitions from demolition to reconstruction, the urgency to get projects moving forward presents a new challenge for architects and designers. People are understandably eager to get back into their homes and start using the city again; however, this eagerness can bring about shotgun decisions that often result in less than appealing architecture. Christchurch has always been celebrated for its strong architectural language, from the historic Gothic structures of Benjamin Mountfort to the slick modernist forms of Sir Miles Warren. All of this history has shaped what is known as ‘the Christchurch style’, and although a lot of these examples have been lost, certain principles can be adopted to create a new contemporary vernacular. The key to creating ‘new’ timeless architecture is consideration to all aspects of the build. This starts with physical layout and building form that responds well to the surrounding context. Modern influences are important – however it is equally important to reference and evolve past movements to invent our own unique language, rather than subscribing to popular trend. Strong uncomplicated forms can create the most sophisticated architectural aesthetic. Selection of quality materials and attention to the finer detail is paramount in achieving a sense of solidity and permanence – although it is difficult to predict future movements in design, honest, natural materials never date. www.colabarch.co.nz

With Christchurch in full rebuild mode, Cityscape caught up with CoLab Architecture’s Blair Paterson and Tobin Smith for the lowdown on the finer points of creating timeless architecture.

LIVE, LIFE LOVE

THE GOOD LIFE With Dr Libby

The first way to debunk some of the confusion around sugar is to clarify the precise definition of the word ‘sugar’, as it is used loosely in the modern vernacular and given a variety of meanings. Technically, sugar and starch are carbohydrates, with one of the main differences between them being the size of their structures. The term sugar refers to simple sugars – monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose, as well as disaccharides such as sucrose, lactose and maltose, which are two monosaccharides linked together.

Starches are polysaccharides made up of long chains of monosaccharides. Starches are broken down into sugars during digestion. Sugars are created by some plants to store energy, rather like the way animals make fat. For plants, periods of feast and famine are natural and plants have to be able to store fuel for lean times so they can survive – sugars are these fuels. Plants make sugars via photosynthesis by taking in carbon dioxide through their leaves and absorbing water through their roots. These are combined to make sugar using energy from the sun

and with the help of a substance called chlorophyll, which gives the plants their colour and the ability to absorb the sun’s energy. Phosphoglyceraldehyde serves as the starting material for the synthesis of glucose and fructose. Glucose and fructose may remain in this structure within the plant, or they may combine to form sucrose and travel in a solution to other parts of the plant, such as the fruit and/or the roots. Isn’t nature amazing? White sugar, otherwise known as table sugar, is sucrose; glucose and fructose joined together. It is derived from sugar cane, which must undergo many processes of refinement to create table sugar. The road from the juice within the sugar cane – the subtly sweet liquid rich in nutrients – to white refined sugar is a journey that concentrates sweetness – making us want sweeter and sweeter foods – concentrates energy (calories), and destroys nutrients, all factors that are highly undesirable for great health. Be sure to choose sweet foods made from wholefoods to nourish you this summer. www.drlibby.com

PAINT IT BLACK PALAZZO KITCHENS & APPLIANCES KITCHEN DESIGNER EMILY ERICKSON SHARES WHY BLACK IS SO HOT RIGHT NOW

AU NATURALE Cruelty-free and bursting with high performance organic natural ingredients and anti-aging vitamins, Oasis Beauty specialises in sensitive skin, sun protection and skin repair alongside guilt-free glamour. Plus, locally-made, their Canterbury pedigree helps keep your beauty miles down. www.oasisbeauty.co.nz

After a decade of white dominating the world of kitchen design, another timeless colour is making a comeback – black. Renowned for being sophisticated and sexy, black has emerged as a hot kitchen trend stronger than ever this season. From statement pieces to subtle hints, you are able to create that timeless combination with an über chic look. While I understand the reason for black kitchens being avoided in the past, from notoriously being known to mark and show smudges, the kitchen market has finally pushed aside all myths towards this finish. Gone are the days of impossible-to-clean black cabinets! Although the combination of black and white continues to be strong together, whether it’s a mix between the lower cabinets and upper cabinets, there are also other ways to bring black into your kitchen this year. Now’s your chance to be creative and bold, with statement pieces such as a black stove, ideally for a country or modern-rustic kitchen, or accessorise with black tap and sink ware to suit any style. We are all aware that tastes and seasons change, but a black kitchen is a seamless, classic design that will last through the ages. www.palazzokitchens.co.nz www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

Summer is seriously the best season for men’s fashion; think about all those after work functions, family and friends getting married and similar opportunities to head out and enjoy yourself. However, the event starts at home, and sometimes getting dressed for the occasion can be an event in itself. To make things easier for yourself try and create an obvious difference between the garments that you wear to work and the ones you wear out. Most guys tend to see them as one and the same and it’s easier to spot than you think. But rocking two looks doesn’t mean you have to spend thousands of dollars to have a good wardrobe. Buy smart and get creative – have some key pieces that you keep for good, and buy accessories from time to time based around them to mix things up. FYI: footwear is super important – never underestimate the value of a good pair of shoes!

A CLEAN SLATE

CAPTURING THE MOMENT

Cityscape gets the lowdown on taking the perfect summer snap from Photo & Video International’s Matthew Nixon.

Image: Dennis Radermacher

Cityscape catches up with Stu North at European Ceramics & Stone to find out what’s hot in tiles and natural stone.

1. The old adage ‘The best camera is the one you have with you’ holds true. It really doesn’t matter how good it is, if it’s at home in the closet, it’s no good to you! 2. Lunchtime is for lunch. The light at midday is often very harsh; for great images look for the softer ‘golden’ light you get closer to dawn or dusk. 3. Involve the kids. Not only do they make great subject matter, but they can often surprise with great images of their own from a perspective you may never have considered. 4. Don’t be afraid of shooting into the sun. A bit of lens flare can really add atmosphere to a shot. 5. The flash can be your friend in bright light. Forcing the flash to fire will illuminate foreground subjects, making them ‘pop’, filling in shadows under the eyes and avoiding the dreaded silhouette. www.photo.co.nz

PALAZZO KITCHENS & APPLIANCES INTERIORS/RENOVATION & BUILDING

66 Victoria Street, Central City 03 366 6948 www.palazzokitchens.co.nz Open: Mon – Fri 9am – 5:30pm, Sat/Sun 10am – 4pm

What started over 10 years ago in Christchurch has developed into an exemplary story of national success. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances have experienced overwhelming growth in the past few years. Today’s designer kitchens are sleek and refined, delivering beautiful living spaces that seamlessly integrate function with comfort. Victoria Street Branch Manager Charlotte Neale says “kitchens are the new living spaces – a space for enjoying time with family and friends”. The living-room-style design introduces an unconventional mix of styles and exquisite materials. Amalgamating classic style and modern elements into one kitchen helps break the barriers to complete the perfect open plan living space. Palazzo Kitchens and Appliances use of the very latest in European technologies from Germany is seen as the basis of their continuing development and growth. “Made in Germany” is not simply a slogan, but incorporates a true commitment to quality. Pieta Fletcher, Senior Designer, notes that at Palazzo they determine “the look, the functionality and the specifics” (such as appliances) that you want in your kitchen. When they produce a photo-style image for you, the design is as realistic as possible. They then go through the design with you, adding adjustments and accessories as necessary. Palazzo offer two German-made kitchen brands, Nobilia and Rational. “I enjoy designing and selling kitchens from the Nobilia range as there’s a style to suit everyone’s taste and budget” says Sarah Humphreys, Senior Designer. Kitchen Designer Emily Erickson adds that Nobilia is able to achieve high-performance production, delivering unique, high quality kitchen furniture to over 2,600 homes every day. Palazzo also specialise in Rational Kitchen Furniture, which has been available in New Zealand for over 20 years. Rational are the masters of colour and style – their stunning range pairs strong, contemporary colours, available in the most beautiful gloss & matt lacquers, with unique and interesting layouts – blurring the boundaries between kitchens & furniture is what gives Rational “their luxury edge”, says Senior Kitchen Designer Monique Enoka. In Victoria Street you will find a highly qualified kitchen design team, an array of full kitchen displays, appliances, benchtops, sinks, taps, splashbacks, kitchen lighting and other accessories. Palazzo offer a totally free, no-obligation kitchen design service that utilises the latest European design software, allowing you to see your new kitchen in as lifelike a form as possible. Come into the showroom today and see what’s possible for your home with the help of the expert team at Palazzo.

Chris is always asked “What’s happening in the market?” The last quarter of 2014 was strong. October saw record numbers of sales and listings in his office. November became more balanced between buyer and seller due to increased stock levels, which flowed onto less competition in the auction room, although fair market prices were still achieved. December should see good volume and activity leading into the Christmas break and a great year in 2015! Get in touch with Chris at Harcourts Holmwood today!

INTO THE BLUE A magical place where turquoise waters lazily lap pristine white sands studded with nodding palms and stilted thatch-roofed overwater bungalows dot the horizon like a string of black pearls, Bora Bora’s seduction is effortless. Travelling during summer (Tahiti’s low season, excluding the Christmas and New Year’s period) could see you holidaying like a rock star without the accompanying budget. Traditionally wetter than the high season, prices drop in summer, allowing for luxurious resort stays at a fraction of the price, while occasional rains make for stunning rainbows. Outsmart showers by grabbing an icy Hinano (local beer) and sacking out on the balcony of your fab over-water bungalow, blissing out with a monoi and coconut oil traditional Tahitian massage, or take a dip with your underwater neon-lit neighbours. Tahiti and Bora Bora’s low season runs from 1 November to 20 December and 20 January to 31 March.

Locate yourself centrally at the funky Art Deco glamfest that’s QT Sydney (pictured) and hit the town of an evening. Watching the sun set over the Harbour Bridge and Opera House as the city lights spark into life, cocktail in hand, at the Shangri-La Hotel’s Blu Bar on 36 is a must!

FVEY, Shihad Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. As soon as I heard the first track ‘Think You’re So Free’, which has already become a killer radio rock track, I realised Shihad were back to their raw, intense, powerful, hard-edged selves. Jaz Colemans’ influence is plain to see, offering a shift in direction from the soft, radio pop that has been about over the last releases. FVEY has a strong broody depth mixed with great lyrics and a hard rock edge which is what I love about New Zealand’s premier rock band. The more I listen to this album the more I love it – a great summer rock party album. Can’t wait to see them live over New Years! CINEPHILES: BATTLE STAR It seems Hollywood pneumatic blonde du jour Scarlett Johansson just can’t get enough action – movies that is. Having pulled on tight-fitting ass-kicking ensembles for The Island and as Black Widow in the endless Marvel/Disney Avengers franchise (including the recently announced lead in the Black Widow spin-off), ScarJo’s upcoming DVD release of French director Luc Besson’s (Leon: The Professional and The Fifth Element) is hyper-kinetic sci-fi action flick Lucy. Picking up the role after Angelina Jolie pulled out, ScarJo’s Lucy tears mobrun Taipei a new one after being forced into drug muling and inadvertently given godlike powers after one of her ‘deliveries’, an experimental drug, leaks inside her – cue balls-to-the-wall action, glamorous bloody revenge and a whole lotta female empowerment.

METHOD ACTING When you’re looking for an actor to take their performance to the next level you can’t go past Hollywood ol’ skooler Nicolas Cage. Sure he’s rocked some frightening hair pieces and hammed up some of cinema’s more OTT meltdowns, but when you need someone to wolf down a live cockroach, as in 1988’s comedy horror Vampire’s Kiss for example, Cage is your man. “To this day, people ask me about the cockroach – it was disgusting,” Cage has said. “I have a fear of bugs and I had to disinfect my mouth with 100-proof vodka and just spit the bug out. It makes me sick thinking about it.”

WATCH GMO OMG Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. The genetic modification of food and its worldwide consumption continues with limited knowledge of its effects on humans and the environment. But the results of increasing numbers of studies are cause for concern, especially how genetically engineered seeds now dominate the food supply and the potentially adverse effects they are having on our health. A father looks at this trend in relation to his three boys and investigates the motives behind poor Haitian farmers burning hybrid corn and vegetable seeds donated by Monsanto after the earthquake in 2010. Data, statistical analysis and animation also help to illustrate the thematic strands of the documentary. GMO OMG travels across the US and around the globe to explore possible solutions to the alarming growth in genetic food modification and the hope and direction offered by organisations like Seed Savers Exchange and Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

READ Tramping: A New Zealand History, Shaun Barnett and Chris Maclean, Review by Jo Hewitson, Scorpio Books. New Zealand is a place of rare and challenging beauty and tramping here has developed a unique character and style. In this fascinating, highly readable and superbly illustrated book, authors Shaun Barnett and Chris Maclean tell, for the first time, how this essentially Kiwi recreation evolved in such a distinctive way. $69.99.

SUMMER SLAM WORLD CUP FEVER HITS THE CITY THIS SUMMER WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE 2015 CRICKET WORLD CUP.

Christchurch and the resplendent new Hagley Oval have bagged the prestigious opening match of the tournament, which is expected to have a television audience of over a billion people (hi, India!). With England also playing a pool match in the city, we can expect to be invaded by the thousandsstrong group of lovable English cricket-tragics (and champion stadium chanters) the Barmy Army, while Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Caribbean fans will also bring their passion for the game to town. The sell-out opening game sees the Black Caps take on Sri Lanka on Valentine’s Day (14 February), with two further neutral pool matches played on the 21st (Pakistan vs. West Indies) and 23rd (England vs Scotland). With the Black Caps showing some encouraging results in the last home summer, and boasting a few exciting new players, some pundits are sneakily tipping the sort of giant-killing run that played out the last time the World Cup was played on these shores in 1992. Fingers crossed! www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup

RIGHT YOU ARE, GUVNOR This year’s summer season at The Court Theatre is One Man, Two Guvnors. Richard Bean’s adaptation of an 18th century Italian commedia dell’arte play was a smash hit on both Broadway and the West End, where the Daily Mail dubbed it “the funniest show on the planet”. Expect songs, slapstick and satire as the absent-minded Francis takes on one criminal employer too many in mid-20th century Brighton. The show runs 6 nights a week until the 17th of January. www.courttheatre.org.nz
