Elsewhere in the city, Taj of India has expanded with a new eating house in Sydenham, healthy eating has arrived at vegetarian café Villa 23 on Mandeville Street in Riccarton, and on Riccarton Road Asian fusion newbie Bao Bar is rocking some seriously tasty street style eats. Popular chain Thai Chef has opened its first South Island restaurant, also on Riccarton Road, and further down Meet Fresh is another chain outlet offering Taiwanese desserts and drinks. Breathing new life into old faves are the team at No.4 Bar & Restaurant who were, at the time of press, recreating the magic at Rogues of Rotherham as a new bar and restaurant in Riccarton, while local caterers Continental have restored the iconic Mona Vale Homestead & Pantry – which boasts exciting new high tea offerings – and the Switch Espresso team have re-imagined Art Centre stalwart Le Café as Bunsen. Another newbie on the café/deli scene is Park Ranger on Riccarton Road. And there’s new fitness offerings from Iron Hood Fitness on Manchester Street and barre raisers On Pointe Barre & Wellness Studio on Bealey Avenue.

END OF AN ERA Merivale fashion stalwart Quinns has closed its iconic doors following the passing of local fashion maven and original fashionista Margaret Quinn.

WOO HOO Good times for foodies are coming with the news that Madam Woo’s Malaysian hawker-style food, courtesy of Michelin-star chef Josh Emett, is coming to the city. Construction of the 181 High Street restaurant started in November and it’s tipped to open early February, slinging its signature tasty goodness including honey and soy tossed squid, chicken and prawn laksa soup, stir fried pork belly and their famous Hawker Roll (pictured).

Those in the know have been hitting up the shoe legends at the iconic McGregors Shoe Service on Lincoln Road for the last 30 years (the business has been operating out of the same shop since 1880!), where Adam has been smashing epic shoe repairs, alterations (including lowering heels!), leather work and key cutting alongside serving up some righteous takeaway coffee.

tarting its life as a temporary measure designed to return the spark of activity to a post-quake central Christchurch desperately in need of such a boost, Re:START Mall has celebrated its fifth year of operation – that’s about 30 times as long as the 61 days it took to convert a bunch of utilitarian shipping containers into a funky boutique retail precinct, if anyone’s counting. The colourful can-do container collection simply couldn’t have survived this long without strong support from the city though, and Christchurch has embraced Re:START in a big way – the pop-up mall has not only become one of the city’s favourite go-to meeting places, lunch spots, and shopping destinations, but is often the first place we all take visitors to. Equally iconic have been many of the Christchurch commerce legends that have called it home at various times over the years; from Stencil to Scorpio Books and Untouched World, it’s a long list. It’s not just the locals in love, either; Re:START’s been singled out for praise by travel writers and publications the world over, and is perhaps the go-to icon of the ‘new’ Christchurch. So summer is upon us, and that means the invitations to the back-yard soirees of friends, co-workers, relatives and maybe even neighbours (remember those?) are going to start rolling in. Everyone loves a barbie, but what we don’t love are those clueless guests that turn it into a downer. So firstly: it should go without saying, but Mum was right – never arrive empty handed. A six-pack/bottle of wine is still a minimum! If you have specific dietary requirements bring them – don’t count on your host to buy the vegan quorn sausages. And remember, once you’ve brought it, leave it! Nothing’s more undignified than the sight of you fossicking around in the fridge at the end of the night in order to retrieve a third of a bottle of Sav. Secondly: once at the event, never try to assume control of the grill – this is a blatant invasion of your host’s domain. And just as no-one likes a back street driver, your unsolicited cooking tips will probably be unappreciated as well. Thirdly: what you should volunteer for, though, is cleanup duty – here’s your guarantee of further invitations. And last but not least: stick to actual human interaction (remember that, as well?) – the person that spends all night with a drink in one hand and their phone in the other is no-one’s idea of a good time. Successful summer socialising; it’s a piece of cake!

DON’T GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB “Do you know how to use a knife?,” asks Kumo Japanese Cuisine’s sushi chef extraordinaire SeungAhn Lew, pausing mid pass of the deep-bladed, super-sharp knife. I reply “yes”, taking the knife, and immediately butcher my practice sushi roll. I might look the part in my pimpin’ sushi jacket, hat and form-fitting apron, and be in the kitchen of one of Christchurch’s finest Japanese restaurants, but apparently hundreds of years of tradition, technique and craftsmanship can’t be picked up on the fly. Cutting sushi requires a moist blade, a deft, one-way slicing action and a clean knife. Lessons learned, we next tackle their signature – Kumo’s Special Roll. I scatter sesame seeds over the rice-clad nori paper and place three plump (and de-tailed) tempura prawns through the middle, drawing a thick line of aioli down one side. My sushi rolling prowess has improved and gets SeungAhn’s nod of approval. We then layer alternate slivers of salmon and scallop over the roll's top and paint with the head chef’s special unagi sauce and layers of fine ribbons of Kewpie mayonnaise. It’s then seared with a blowtorch. SeungAhn, perhaps remembering the knife incident earlier on, cautiously passes the alight torch. Accident-free though, we top with tiny pearls of topiko and finely sliced spring onions. Sure, I lose some points on the cutting and it might not be as pretty as my sensei’s, but, eyes closed, it tastes just as good! kumo-cuisine.co.nz

hat’s your signature cocktail? The Old Fashioned. It's a versatile and simple cocktail that you should enjoy around good company within a relaxing setting. If I’m honest, at home having a big cocktail and dinner bash with good friends is my scene, and lasting into the late morning just tops it off. Christchurch’s hidden gem? The Sign of the Takahe – great views of the city and a very romantic spot as the sun sets. Best Sunday afternoon spot? The Wunderbar in Lyttelton. Great view of the harbour, some crazy decor and charming staff, awesome for a Sunday arvo. Fave eats? Tequila Mockingbird, for an amazing taste of Latin tapas and a fun shared dining experience.

Park Life

Citycape checks out the city’s spanking new adventure park.

TOTALLY BOSS

nswering the prayers of local adrenaline junkies, the slick new Christchurch Adventure Park, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, is much more than just a downhill mountain bike bonanza. While mountain biking will be one of the main attractions – the 358-hectare park (aka Cashmere Forest), which is tucked between the Port Hills’ Dyers Pass, Worsleys and Summit Roads, will open with 50 kilometres of bodacious downhill trails. These will range from options for beginners through to technical and trick/jumps, with a pump track for kids designed by local school children. An additional 50 kilometres of tracks will be built in later. The park also features the country’s longest chairlift, at 1.8 kilometres long, which can haul 1,200 riders and their bikes up the 435 vertical metres in 60 minutes – guests will be able to connect to the Crater Rim walking tracks and a world class custom-built zip line, with a series of four dual zip lines ranging from 400 metres to 1.1 kilometres in length set to race guests through and above the forest, peaking at 150 metres above the forest floor. There’s also rock-climbing facilities and a café and bar seating more than 200 people. With the park deliberately designed as sympathetic to the surrounding environment, all the buildings are located at the base of the $25 million facility, preserving the skyline. The land will also be latticed with walkways and running tracks with free entry, promoting use of the park to the greater community. Phase two will see the construction of a mountain coaster, a self-controlled luge-style ride, followed by accommodation for 284 people, with options including a hotel, chalets and dorms.

The petitioning finally paid off; legendary rocker and voice of a generation Bruce ‘The Boss’ Springsteen is primed to crank up AMI Stadium alongside the E Street Band on 21 February. Recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama (who said “I am the president, he is The Boss”), the American pied piper of cool is responsible for a string of decade-spanning hits such as ‘Dancing in the Dark’ (which helped launch Friends’ star Courtney Cox’s career when he pulled her up on stage back in 1984!), ‘Born in the USA’, ‘Born to Run’, ‘Streets of Philadelphia’, ‘I’m on Fire’, ‘Glory Days’, ‘Hungry Heart’, ‘Cover Me’, ‘The River’ … we could literally do this ALL day; you get the prolific hit-making picture. However, it’s ‘My City of Ruins’ – which he dedicated to Christchurch during his 2014 Auckland concert – that has struck an enduring chord with the city. brucespringsteen.net

Christmas Shopping If you’re destined to be hitting the shops at 9:47pm on Christmas Eve while ‘Snoopy’s Christmas’ drills into your ears, we might just have your "get out of Christmas shopping hell" card here! So Christmas is looming and you’ve got a telephone book (remember those?)-like gift list with too few names ticked off… OK, zero names ticked off. First of all: Prune that dead gift wood from your list. Does that cousin you haven’t seen in 4 years really need a box of Cadbury Favourites? Cut! Secondly: aimless wandering in search of inspiration is a recipe for hair-tearing disaster. Nail down a solid gift idea for each person before heading out – or at least a couple of options. Time to join the herd in the cattle-stampede-like atmosphere that is Christmas shopping. Avoid the slow-crawl road-rage nightmare that is mall parking and grab a spot a block or two away – you're less likely to buy more than you can carry. The key now is efficiency; you’re aiming to get in and out commando style. Stick to your list and budget! If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of trying to ‘see what you can find’ for someone for more than about 10 minutes, inspiration is standing you up – make like a game show contestant and phone a mutual friend or relative for ideas. If you find yourself holding the last of anything – make sure you really don’t want it before putting it down. And if it’s all getting to be too much, call a time out – a pre-Chrissie bevvie can be a lifesaver!

LIVE IN LINCOLN: SELWYN SOUNDS The inaugural outing

of what is planned to be an annual event (fingers crossed!) for the uni town of – you guessed it – Lincoln, this sparkly newbie music fest is serving up a killer line-up of mostly 80s retro tunes alongside some of Canterbury’s finest food trucks, three licensed bar areas and stalls in the Lincoln Domain. HOKITIKA WILDFOODS FESTIVAL A food festival for

the brave, Hokitika’s annual Wildfoods Festival is a world famous event that channels the wild West Coast spirit. While festivalgoers can enjoy exquisite gourmet options including marinated tuna, whitebait patties, gourmet sausages, smoked salmon, wild game meats, traditional Maori hangi and more, it’s the out-there fare that has really made the festival’s name. It’s famous for serving up native New Zealand huhu grubs, but that’s just the beginning; last year’s fest put such delicacies as duck heads, crocodile bites, fish eyes, scorpions, pork blood casserole, baby octopus, worms, deep fried pigs ears, snails, and ‘mountain oysters’ on the menu. You’ll navigate more than 300 beers and ciders on tap from 40 breweries – add in some of the region’s and city’s top eats and shoulder-tap some of the country’s best musos including The Mockers (specifically reformed after 30 years for the day!), The Chills, Katchafire and Delaney Davidson, and you’ve got one heck of a beerstravaganza. SURVIVING THE DAY/NIGHT Festival season offers a gazillion opportunities to become a social media

statistic, but this minefield is easily navigated with a little common sense. First thing’s first – be your own best friend and ward off sunstroke and killer hangovers by slapping on some sunscreen. Enjoy the occasional glass of water (hydration is key, people – beer is not a water substitute!) and wash a pre-emptive painkiller down with an electrolyte drink before calling it a day. Sometimes out of town festivals are just so awesome you’ve really got no choice but to pack up the car and make tracks across the country – road trips and festivals go hand-in-hand (though flying is acceptable for the time poor). Here’s our pick of the hottest. Highlights on the culinary festival scene include the Wellington Wine & Food Festival (10 – 11 March, Wellington), which pairs the region’s best local gourmet producers and restaurants with local wineries and breweries in a showcase of the tastiest in local goodness; in the South Island, the Gibbston Wine and Food Festival (18 March, Queenstown) is Queenstown’s premiere wine and food festival and showcases the region’s finest, while the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival (11 February, Blenheim) is New Zealand’s longest-running wine festival – with a natural home in Marlborough, it invites festival goers to Brancott Vineyard (one of New Zealand’s oldest and scenic wine estates) to enjoy not only the world-famous products of the many vineyards in the region, but also delicious local cuisine.

For music-driven shenanigans, look up the Rhythm siblings: Rhythm and Alps (30 – 31 December, Wanaka) is a New Year music festival that is the largest staged in the South Island, and attracts thousands of eager festival goers to the jaw-slackening natural environment and wonder that is the Cardrona Valley in Central Otago. It's two days and nights of awesome music from a huge line-up of Kiwi and international acts. North Island counterpart Rhythm and Vines (29 – 31 December, Eastland), meanwhile, is arguably New Zealand’s most renowned music festival, and makes the most of the natural charms of another stunning part of the country, basing itself at the Waiohika Estate vineyard. In Auckland, Laneway Festival (30 January), part of an international circuit that sees similar events staged in Singapore, Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Fremantle, and Melbourne, is one of the country’s premier music events, while the city’s reggae and roots outing RaggaMuffin (18 February) celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2017. MUSIC Kick back to the sounds of summer with the day-long Nostalgia Festival (4 March, Ferrymead Heritage Park), a celebration of independent music set within the replica 1900s township that’s backed by the soundtrack of New Zealand’s top indie artists busting out some top tunes over two stages. Combo festivals offering a little of everything include rising star on the country’s festival calendar, Sundaise Festival (10 – 12 March, Waihi), a three-day celebration of music, art, and sustainability in the Coromandel, and Auckland’s waterfront New Years Eve bash Wondergarden (31 December), which fuses an epic musical line-up with roaming performers and lighting installations. Also in the City of Sails is the Auckland Arts Festival (8 – 26 March) an 18-day bonanza of theatre, concerts, art installations, exhibitions, performances, and much more, while the Takaka hilltop Luminate Festival (1 – 8 February) on Canaan

Downs is a week-long music, visual and performing arts and lifestyle (read: hippie) festival where attendees camp amidst native bush. For a retro-fuelled extravagance, head to the party weekend that is Napier’s Art Deco Festival (15 – 19 February), an annual heritage celebration of the 20s and 30s that plays host to a raft of events that includes grand balls, street parties, banquets, costumed events, flight displays, and a hugely popular soapbox derby. If the obscure, strange and unusual is more your thing, you need to hit up the Dunedin Fringe Festival (9 – 19 March) where experimental contemporary art is served to a wider audience, celebrating the new, quirky, out-there, bizarre and exciting over an action-packed 10 days in the funky southern city.

There can be no better reason to get your festival on than an epic line up of eats and drinks! Kick back in the sun and eat and drink your way around The Great Kiwi Beer Festival (28 January, Hagley Park), which sees the nation’s finest craft brewers showcase their wares in a cornucopia for hopheads. Dubbed the coolest little wine festival in the country, Waipara’s North Canterbury Wine & Food Festival (12 March, Glenmark Domain) showcases the outstanding wines of the Waipara region and gourmet treats from the region’s local producers and top Christchurch chefs and restaurants. And the unforgettable Hokitika Wildfoods Festival (11 March, Cass Square) serves up some offally good fare; enough to test the mettle of the most cast-ironstomached gourmand. Fortunately the heaping helping of the famous West Coast hospitality that you also get is very palatable indeed!

MULTI-STAGING Sometimes music festivals have such epic line-ups they just can’t be contained on one stage! While this might seem like a first-world gripe, the introduction of a second or third stage can mean you might be faced with some tough calls – particularly if two or more of your faves are rocking similar timeslots. But it doesn’t have to be all Sophie’s Choice – you can watch it all, and it doesn’t involve cloning yourself! Firstly, check the timetable and pull together your hit list – it’s worth noting that things will be running on ‘festival time’ and will generally be running later than anticipated. You’ll also note that these are also timed to overlap, meaning you can catch the start and end of most gigs – when they’ll be pulling out the big guns. Another way to keep tabs on what’s going down is finding the ‘sweet spot’ – a place where you can see multiple stages and keep tabs on what’s happening on each, then move in for the killer tracks.

LITTLE ITALY Perfectly positioned alongside the Isaac Theatre Royal, the newly-minted Christchurch operation of famed Wanaka culinary institution Francescaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Italian Kitchen has all of its southern siblingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hallmarks; authentic, traditional Italian cuisine served in hip, welcoming surrounds by passionate and enthusiastic foodies. Beyond the slick glass exterior, rustic mixes with industrial cool; an ornate gold-framed mirror behind the bar overlooks dark wooden tables topped with quirky jar-potted plants, and flocks of sepia-tinged family photos are scattered across fresh white walls, while a soaring ceiling instils a sense of occasion. Taking pride of place, the open, wood-fired pizza oven exposes the culinary nerve centre, where slackened dough is transformed into crispy, thin-based pizza perfection. ike a cunning optical illusion, the slinky single New Regent Street shop front entrance (about to be transformed into a hip alfresco bar!) makes way for an intimate and swishy second-floor dining space that spans the width of four shops. The space channels bistro-luxe sophistication sans the stuffy pretension; timber floors and dark wood tables – complete with guttering candlelight and vintage, purposefully mismatched, crockery – are joined by eclectic retro light fittings, black and white tiling (done right) and a slick, black-tiled bar that infuses timeless Euro-cool. Complimentary slabs of warm homemade rosemary, fennel and feta bread are a crafty culinary contradiction: light and moist with a chewy crust, yet packed with a herby, moreish flavour density. It’s brilliant with sips of the fine-beaded bubbles gently boiling in lightly

condensation-frosted flutes. Equally effervescent is our host Megan (Meg) Stelma, who takes us through the new summer menu showcasing the finest locally-sourced goodness. We start with sautéed squid, in which tender white links are teamed with chunks of feisty smoky Chorizo Garcia, cherry tomatoes, chickpeas and peppery rocket that’s tangy with lemon and garlic. The two duck egg-sized quenelles of silken duck liver parfait coat the mouth like a fine foie gras – it’s eye-rollingly good paired with the sticky sweetness of an intense muscovado and onion jam with a devilish bite. The excitement mounts with the arrival of our mains: pan-fried groper stacked in a towering tangle of fresh salad greens, crunchy roasted nuts and seeds and the genius of sweet/tart explosive pops of pomegranate seeds. Steps chargrilled aged Canterbury beef fillet, a meltingly meaty hit. Some of the most exceptional beef that’s ever touched a fork, it’s capped by the earthy richness of a bone marrow crust and served alongside buttery layers of piquant horseradish and potato gratin and a tastebud-teasing jus. Admittedly we’re comfortably full by this point, but neither of us is willing to leave without tapping the baked chocolate ganache. It proves to be one of the night’s best choices, with the ganache’s firm exterior making way for a dreamy molten choc explosion and a next-level pairing with both the roasted crunch of spiced hazelnuts and a ravishingly bitter/sweet syrupy orange oil, while the velvety cool of a homemade crème fraîche ice cream cuts through the delicious decadence, inciting duelling forks over our epic finale. twentysevensteps.co.nz

Meat Market

Cityscape caught Cashmere Cuisine’s Kurt Robinson for the lowdown on dry aged beef. Dry aged beef has become increasingly popular in the butchery and restaurant industries, and because of this I decided to invest in a custom-built dry-aging cabinet. The dry aging cabinet has a constant flow of air and is running at a constant 2 degrees Celsius and humidity of 65%. In this environment, and over a varied amount of time (anything from 7 and up to 80 days), the enzymes in the beef break down the proteins into amino fatty acids and aromatic fatty acids, causing the beef to intensify and become richer in flavour. While this is happening the enzymes are also working to weaken and break down the meat fibres, which is naturally tenderising the meat and giving it a much softer texture. I find that the more fat or bone that is on the primal cut, the more it is protected and the longer and better it will age. Marbled T-bone steaks, rump or ribeye on the bone are incredible cuts to age. Dry-aged meat should be well respected and deserves to be cooked medium rare and well rested and, of course, don’t forget to season it well! cashmerecuisine.co.nz

Spicy Banana Ketchup Born out of a shortage of tomato ketchup for US soldiers in the Philippines during World War II, this exotic spicy alternative made creative use of the country’s plentiful supply of bananas. At Dragons Den Social Lounge we use this under our panko sesame crumbed pork belly and blue swimmer crab salad (pictured), which lends a tropical heat to the dish. Shopping list 4 tbsp peanut oil or canola 2 small onions (chopped) 3 garlic cloves (minced) 4 chillies (medium heat – chopped) 3 tbsp tomato paste 4 large ripe bananas (mashed) 250ml apple cider vinegar 120ml water 4 tbsp dark brown sugar ½ tsp black pepper ¼ tsp ground cloves ¼ tsp turmeric ¼ tsp salt 2 tsp soy sauce 1 bay leaf 1 kaffir lime leaf

Making it happen Heat the oil over medium heat, then add the onion and cook, stirring often, until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and chillies, stir, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until aromatic. Add the tomato paste and cook, stirring often, until the mixture is orange/ red and the tomato is no longer visible. Add the mashed bananas and stir to combine well. Then add the vinegar, water, sugar, pepper, clove, turmeric, salt, soy sauce, bay leaf and lime leaf. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat to simmer, partially covered, for 20 to 30 minutes until thick – like ketchup! Remove from the heat and cool for 10 minutes. Remove and discard the bay and lime leaves. Use a mini food processor or blender to puree the mixture. Taste and add water to thin, sugar to sweeten, or vinegar for more acid. Keeps up to 3 weeks refrigerated.

As the warmer weather approaches, many people are entering what is the busiest time of the year socially. For some, this means more alcohol, later nights and, let’s be honest, some not-so-great food choices. Here are some tips to help you survive the silly season.

e kind to yourself It is time to put less pressure on yourself in all aspects of your life. So often our own expectations or pressure can cause us to burn the candle at both ends. Don’t be afraid to say no to commitments when they’re the last thing you feel like. Only you can take care of your health and happiness, and often learning to say no is the best place to start. Use the time you gained to do something you love – go for a walk, practice some yoga moves or simply curl up on the couch with a good book – you will feel so much better for it.

Drink your greens With the increase in special occasions around Christmas time and the often not-so-nourishing food options, juicing vegies or making smoothies is a wonderful way to amp up your nutrition when you’re in charge. Incorporate some organic leafy greens for an extra boost and some nourishing whole food fats such as avocado, nuts or seeds, and you have an easy but nourishing snack. Commit to a morning routine If your days are getting more and more jam-packed, starting your day with a restorative routine can make

all the difference to help your mindset and allow you to start your day with a feeling of spaciousness. Go for a walk, sit with a cup of tea and watch the sunrise, or simply practice some long, slow belly breaths while you wait for the kettle to boil. An attitude of gratitude So often in the whirlwind of the silly season we forget to stop and reflect on all that we already have. If you find yourself stressing about all of the people you have to buy for, or what you should wear to your Christmas party and so on – flip this around. This means EQC assessments/repairs and repair strategies and any relevant information on running/ maintaining your house, pool maintenance, gas, solar and warranties. 2 Invest in a pre-sale builder’s report from a registered building inspector – this will alert you to any potential items that may be a deal-breaker and tell you how to address them, and it also removes one less hurdle for perspective buyers. 3 Make it sparkle! You’re going to need to put in the hard yards on the cleaning front (or pay someone else to) with a thorough, deep clean of every surface; people just don’t fall in love with unclean houses – fact! 4 Get out into the garden. Your outdoor areas and front and back yards make a big impression – so tidy

things up, mow the lawns and clip the edges, and trim and tidy shrubs, trees and bushes. 5 Set the scene. Never put an empty house on the market! Reuniting the cast (joining McGregor are Robert ‘Begbie’ Carlyle, Ewen ‘Spud’ Bremner and Jonny ‘Sick Boy’ Lee Miller) some 20 years later, the film sees original director Danny Boyle helming a screenplay loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s follow up novel Porno – and he means loosely: “It’s (Porno) not a great book in the way that Trainspotting, the original novel, is genuinely a masterpiece ... We’re not interested in doing something that will trash the legacy of Trainspotting; we want to do something that’s very fresh and contemporary.”

BATON RULES Cityscape caught up with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra’s multi-talented chief conductor extraordinaire Benjamin Northey for the inside word on their 2017 season.

ow did you get into conducting? I always wanted to play music, even from an early age. Conducting wasn’t on the agenda at all really until much later. I did quite a bit of ensemble leading as a chamber musician, but it was only at the urging of my first teacher (John Hopkins) that I became interested in conducting. Once I started studying I well and truly got the bug for it. Tell us about your genrespanning skills. I’ve always subscribed to the idea that great music transcends genre. Each world of sound requires a specific understanding, and it’s the job of musicians to bring the required expertise and care to everything they perform. Some more complex works demand a greater time commitment to prepare thoroughly, but I think an understanding of the many and varied styles of music are the key. Even within the world of opera there are dozens of sub-genres, each needing to be

researched, studied and understood in order to bring the works to life. Where is the most unusual place you’ve performed? Well the wonderful Air Force Museum at Wigram would be high on the list! It’s like an art installation and a concert hall in one building. In fact many of my colleagues around the globe are envious when I share photos of the space. I love the context it brings to our concert programmes, particularly our 20th century works which are often informed by war. What can we expect from the CSO’s 2017 season? There are so many great works to look forward to – some of the greatest music ever written, really. Beethoven’s peerless 9th symphony, Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet, Tchaikovsky’s 5th symphony, many wonderful soloists from New Zealand and around the world. One work which has taken on a renewed relevance and interest is the 3rd symphony of US composer Aaron Copland. It represents the ideals of

post WW2 New Deal America, the hope, aspiration, optimism of that time. My how things have changed! There’s something for everyone. Tell us about Symphonic Oddity. I imagine that if David Bowie was able to look down upon this concert he would do so with a proud smile on his face. It’s a tribute to his creative life and the effect he had on so many people, artists and musicians. His greatest hits will be taken to a new place with rock band and full orchestra – a must for Bowie fans wanting to celebrate his life. How will you keep your cool at PwC Opera at Pegasus Bay? Keep well hydrated! Which should be easy given the quality of refreshments on offer – although I’ll be waiting until after the concert to enjoy the viticultural delights!
