The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra are returning home to their revamped and purpose-built set up in the Town Hall. Kick-starting their 2019 season is an explosive, genre-defying collab with local lads Shapeshifter for what will no doubt be an electrifying night of beats. Renowned New Zealand pianists Michael Houstoun and Tony Chen Lin are tapped to make an appearance in the orchestra’s opening symphony concert and it’s been over a quarter of a century since the CSO and Lamb & Hayward joined forces and brought us the highly-anticipated Masterworks series, with 2019 continuing the partnership and journeying through some of the world’s most renowned compositions from heavy hitters on the classical music scene such as Mozart, Beethoven and Holst. Leonard Bernstein’s score from West Side Story will receive the CSO treatment in what will be a New Zealand first and will be performed live alongside a screening of the remastered classic. MAURI MOANA: KO AU TE MOANA KO TE MOANA KO AU/I AM THE OCEAN AND THE OCEAN IS ME, 2018 – PIRI COWIE Homegrown artist Piri Cowie has drawn inspiration from the depths of the deep blue for her latest sculptural masterpiece. The UC Fine Arts alumna calls on her contemporary Māori cultural fashion experience to inform her handmade garments and taonga showcased within a special event that integrates her photographic portraits with live performance, waiata and the sharing of kai in North Hagley Park.

TUNNEL, 2018 & ORION, 2018 – HANNAH BEEHRE For a fully immersive starry night sky experience, Hannah Beehre has created a dazzling sculptural installation that replicates a jaw-dropping nebula that’s quite literally out of this world. Tunnel forms a spectacular entrance to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Canterbury Museum, and Beehre’s second work Orion can be marvelled at in the museum’s foyer.

MONUMENT TO THE PRESENT, 2018 – TOM DALE Informed by his visit to the Garden City in 2017, UK-based artist Tom Dale’s Monument to the Present (corner of Durham Street North & Chester Street East) speaks to the various voices vying to be heard that often represent conflicting ideas and imperatives. And, joining A Cage of Voices, the latest of Dale’s two video works featured this season, The Red Zone (at CoCA) explores the changing external environmental states and the turbulence of our interior landscapes.

VERDANT GEOMETRY, 2018 – ERICA VAN ZON The majestic neoclassical conservatory, Cuningham House within the Botantic Gardens will house Verdant Geometry, a suite of metal, glass and mirroredperspex sculptures imagined by Erica van Zon. This piece sparks a dialogue on how various architectural tropes and styles morph over time by using the architectural qualities of the space as a reference point and fuses these with iconic stylistic elements from 80s interior design and architecture.

FITU (SEVEN), 2018 & LELIA, 2018 – CHRISTOPHER ULUTUPU Samoanborn, Wellingtonbased videographer/ performance artist Christopher Ulutupu seeks to recontextualise the stereotypes of Pacific Islanders found in early 1900s landscape photography and ‘postcard’ tourism, and re-imagines them through his installation pieces. His latest creation Fitu (Seven) comprises a series of seven photographic stills shot alongside the making of a new single channel video work, Hagley Park Billboards, 2018. Meanwhile, Lelia takes inspiration from a 70s Vogue winter fashion shoot that explores the artist’s evolving relationship with ‘My Coloniser’ (at The Physics Room).

A, I, O, U, 2018 – BEN PEARCE Honing each piece out of wood, stone, metal and found objects, contemporary Hastings’ sculptor Ben Pearce has created a quartet of works by appropriating and refining construction industry remnants (at the Christchurch Casino). Exploring their potential transformation from one vernacular to another, Pearce references the written word with vowels found in both English and Te Reo that also connects the two cultures.

PLOT, 2008 – BRETT GRAHAM Delving deep into the historical and political import behind the slicing and dicing of Te Waipounamu (the South Island) and its ‘purchase’ from Ngāi Tahu by the settler government, Brett Graham’s sculpture Plot (at Christ’s College), invites the consideration of how we value land. His carved marble slab is a topographic rendering of Te Waipounamu, which sits atop a tomb-like form as a nod to the notion that the land suffers a kind of death when viewed merely as a commodity.

The same laser light technology used then has since taken leaps and bounds, and Alphabetica Redux has a greater colour palette and is now three dimensional. Check out the festival’s opening event (8:30pm – 10:30pm, Oct 5) where you’ll get to see the artist in action, bringing his own alphabet to life in this onenight-only spectacle.

ENCIRCLING 2006 | RE:PRESENTED – MICHEL DE BROIN A new imagining of Canadian sculptor, Michel de Broin’s Encircling (originally installed for SCAPE 2016 Biennial in Hagley Park) can be found on the corner of Cambridge Terrace and Hereford Street this year. Adopting the urban language of street signs, asphalt and road markings, this ‘road to nowhere’ is a play on how urban design and planning aspires to reactivate spaces obliterated by the quakes.

KOTUKU 2002 | RE:PRESENTED – CAROLINE ROTHWELL Originally designed for the SCAPE Biennial 2002 – specifically for the Botanic Gardens pond – Caroline Rothwell has revisited Kotuku in a surreal, larger-thanlife depiction of a three-headed heron on the Albert Lake. This haunting and mysterious play with light and shade, perspective and distortion, also offers the observer the opportunity to come to their own conclusions à la the Rorschach inkblot.

RE:ACTIVATE Three diverse public sculptures by SCAPE 18 Aspiring Artist winners have been created based on Canterbury’s intertwining rivers. Changing Pathways (Katie Temple) uses the concept of the ever-changing tides (depicted by traffic signs) as a metaphor for the daily choices we make, while the tangle of coloured sticks of Our Stories Make Us (Ollie Moginie) illustrates the interdependency each environmental element has with one another, and Kākahu (Kayla Folwell and Manaia Mahuika-Davies) uses the feathers of a korowai (cloak) – individually designed by 60 Christchurch students – to illustrate a bird’s eye view of the interconnected rivers. Cityscape catches up with James Glennie, founding member, bassist and namesake of legendary Manchester band James on their new album, touring with the Happy Mondays, weird fan requests and leaving it all on the pitch ahead of their November gig. CONGRATS ON LIVING IN EXTRAORDINARY TIMES, IT’S AN EPIC ALBUM – HOW DID THE NEW SOUND AND TONE COME ABOUT? The biggest two factors on the shift in sound on this record are producers Charlie Andrew and Beni Giles. They added a rhythmical element that I think has given the album its character. Lots of drums and percussion, which is great on record but also lots of fun live. ‘HANK’ IS SUCH A KILLER, TRUMPTHUMPING OPENING TRACK, WHAT WAS THE CATALYST FOR IT? Donald Trump makes his presence felt most strongly on songs ‘Hank’ and ‘Heads’. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. Tim (Booth) lives in the States, and of course all that ridiculousness has worked its way into his writing. Musically it’s a huge drum-driven anthem. It’s not a wallow in depression, it’s a call to arms! YOU’VE HAD A FEW NAME CHANGES OVER THE YEARS, HOW DID YOU END UP SETTLING ON JAMES, AND DO YOU REGRET DROPPING VENEREAL AND THE DISEASES? Ah … Venereal and the Diseases, very catchy ho ho! We wanted a name that didn’t sound like a band, and we liked the idea that it was a person’s name. No ‘The’, just ‘James’. And when you knew the name you still had no idea what the band sounded like. WHEN YOU STARTED OUT IN THE 80S, WHAT WAS THE PLAN AND WERE YOU

READY FOR THE ROLLER COASTER RIDE THAT WOULD FOLLOW? Well it took us quite some time to get any success and I think that was a good thing. We had time to develop our sound out of the spotlight and get strong as a unit. I had no idea of the journey ahead though. Probably a good thing! WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MEMORY FROM THOSE HECTIC ‘MADCHESTER MOVEMENT’ DAYS? We took the Happy Mondays on tour with us and that was just one cartoon caper after another. They crashed their van on the way to the first gig, and then went to the wrong venue and missed playing. They ‘lost’ their tour support which, for some reason, they were carrying around with them in cash. They invited us to a party and after we turned down the invite, they climbed in the window of our dressing room and commandeered all our booze. Well, we had been invited after all. Fights on stage, the list goes on … Great band mind you. WHAT’S THE STRANGEST THING ANYONE HAS THROWN ON STAGE? I can't think of anything really strange. I once had a fan give me some of her daughter’s ashes to scatter, which I dutifully did at a loch in the Scottish Highlands where I want mine scattered. So she won’t be alone up there. TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORST DAY JOB. I’ve delivered telephone directories. Not a lot going for it I must say.

‘LAID’ IS PART OF THE SOUNDTRACK OF SO MANY PEOPLE’S LIVES, WHERE DOES IT TAKE YOU WHEN YOU HEAR IT? Songs are like time machines and they have this ability to transport you back. I remember Brian Eno’s insistence that the track had value, even though the rest of us thought it was a bit daft and a little throwaway. It just shows how much we know. IF YOU WERE GIVEN ONE DO-OVER IN YOUR CAREER, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Release ‘Sit Down’ as a single in the States. We wouldn’t let the record company do it. I’ve a feeling I’d be living in Beverley Hills lounging by the side of my guitar-shaped pool if we had of done. Ah well. YOU GUYS ARE KNOWN FOR BRINGING IT NO MATTER WHAT THE STAGE OR VENUE, HOW DO YOU ENSURE A KILLER SET? We only play songs we want to play. So they are all played with intensity, and we never run through the motions. We change the set every night and play what we think will work in relation to the crowd, the venue, the day of the week etc. Plus we always give it our all. We leave it all on the pitch. WHAT’S ON YOUR CHRISTCHURCH TO DO LIST? It’s one of the few painful parts of this job that you travel to so many great places, but you don’t have the time to get out and enjoy them. I’ve a feeling this will be the same. If so, when we come again I’d like to bring my wife Catherine and have some proper time to explore.

LITTLE BOXES Local architect Greg Young, from Young Architects, offers his take on how inner city apartments can inject vitality into our urban landscape and encourages us to break the mould and embrace a brave approach to design.

smash hit for Pete Seeger in the sixties, ‘Little Boxes’ could well be describing many of our city’s new apartments that have been cropping up. Written as a political satire on homogenised suburban developments and the conformist middleclass attitudes of its inhabitants, the song mocks ‘cookie-cutter’ housing, dubbing them “little boxes all made out of ticky-tacky” that “all look just the same”. Although Christchurch has typically been a rather conservative bunch, it does have a history of pushing the envelope when it comes to apartment design. And some of the most succinctly executed examples can be found in the early works of Peter Bevan, David Allen, and Warren and Mahoney. Sir Miles Warren’s Dorset Street flats were originally described by bemused Christchurch locals as “Fort Dorset” for its unconventional use of concrete block and its somewhat stark and austere aesthetic. When they were built in the late fifties they were widely considered as the ugliest group of buildings in the city, but while Christchurch’s conservative inhabitants didn’t like change, these flats are now internationally acclaimed and have been preserved as listed heritage buildings, thanks to the designer’s bold vision. We often say that our homes are a reflection of our personality, and the Dorset Street flats are a prime example of this. Built in 1957, they have been inhabited over the years by artists and lovers, the kind of people brave enough to walk their own path rather than conforming to society’s narrow-minded expectations. If the re-imagining of our city is to inspire and spark dialogue, we need this same kind of courageous approach to the buildings that will add colour to the post-quake canvas. In a city still struggling to find its feet, greater variety is called for with both form and materials. If we can be brave enough to think outside the box, as it were, our new architectural landscape has the power to transform the lives of not only its inhabitants, but the wider community. Let us strive to create buildings that will add to the fabric of our city’s urbanisation and still look great in 50 years’ time. We need buildings that show the character of its inhabitants – and Cantabrians have proven what an incredibly creative bunch we are and just how hardy we can be. Hell, we’ve struggled enough over the last few years, so let’s not surround ourselves with mediocrity, but rise to the challenge and create something we’ll all be proud to call home. young.co.nz

1 UNI-CYCLE University of Canterbury Campus to City Centre – 6km Don your helmet and jump on your bike to make the most of the spring weather as you traverse the tree-lined cycleways through the university campus. This is a fab ride for the whole family, which has a couple of must-see, must-do places where you can hit the pause button and enjoy the gifts of Mother Nature along the way. First up you’ll find Riccarton Bush. Saturday is the day to experience the wonders of the farmers’ market. Fresh, local produce to take home and handmade tasty treats that can be devoured down by the river, makes this the perfect stop-off point en route to the city. Take a stroll through the tranquil ancient native forest filled with towering kahikatea trees before jumping back in the saddle. Head to Mona Vale for a wander through the majestic sprawling grounds, and take a moment to ponder the meaning of life under one of the ancient oak trees, before making tracks through Hagley Park with the final destinations being the Arts Centre, Canterbury Museum and the Art Gallery.

2 RAPANUI Worcester Street to Charlesworth Reserve – 4.5km Before kicking off your journey in Linwood, a hearty brunch at our fave café Under The Red Verandah is a must to keep your motor running as you pedal from Worcester Street towards Stanmore Road. Sail past the Tiny Shop Village to feast your eyes on the latest developments unfolding in this Greening the Rubble community project. The cycleway takes you through Linwood Park, amidst the daffodils down Linwood Ave, and then ending at Charlesworth Reserve, which will soon connect with the Coastal Pathway. Now a lush home to native birds filled with over 100,000 trees and shrubs, this peaceful tidal wetland has plenty of walkways to commune with nature.

3 NORTHERN LINE Truckers Road to Kilmarnock Street – 5.5km For those on the northside of the city, the route along the railway line is a popular one that ends at Mona Vale, or you can continue through North Hagley Park into the central city if you’re up for some café hopping and a dose of retail therapy. The Monarch butterflies are just beginning to emerge, and a great place to find them is at St James Park. For a spot of lunch Mona Vale has a special pop-up restaurant every weekend in October. Get there via an off-road cycleway that’s shared by walkers and joggers, and continue on the Uni-Cycle cycleway, the Northern Line connects with this and takes you all the way to Riccarton Bush, Hagley Park, and beyond.

4 LITTLE RIVER LINK South Hagley Park to Springs Road – 11km Glide through South Hagley Park and the historic Church Square in Addington to Brougham Street where the cycleway runs parallel to the Southern Motorway for easy connections to the new sports hub, Ngā Puna Wai, set to open very soon. This new cycleway provides a safer city route for Aidanfield and Wigram residents heading either to the central city or out to Prebbleton. Be rewarded for your pedalling efforts with lunch at any one of the many hot new cafés and restaurants in Addington.

5 PAPANUI PARALLEL Northlands Shopping Centre to City Centre – 5km For a spot of retail therapy begin your ride at Northlands. Once you’ve maxed the credit card, cycle through farmland down Grassmere Street, then on to Rutland Street in St Albans and past Rugby Park to Edgeware Village. For some of the best gourmet donuts around, pop into The Donut Boutique (every day except Sunday and Monday) and snap up some vintage duds and retro collectibles at Etcetera (open seven days) just over the road. If you have the energy after all that pedalling to do a round trip, you can work off that doughy goodness and get your bod in tip-top shape for summer by ending your bike ride at the Graham Condon Recreation and Sports Centre. Take a dip in the pool or hit the machines for a serious workout.

6 COASTAL PATHWAY Ferrymead Bridge to Moncks Bay – 3.5km

The warmer months invite carefree bike rides along the causeway that has been resurfaced and replanted, from Ferrymead Bridge to Moncks Bay. Stop off at the Mount Pleasant Centre for a yoga class or stock up on fresh veggies and local produce at the weekly farmer’s market from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Head to Redcliffs Village where you can pick up some quality meat at the butchers, a stunning spring bouquet from the local florist or book in a new look for the party season ahead. For a sailing lesson, the Christchurch Yacht Club has classes for both kids and adults as well as affordable family membership. If you’re in the mood for a stroll along the beach and a delish artisan ice cream from Utopia Ice, continue on to Sumner just around the corner.

7 QUARRYMAN’S TRAIL Hoon Hay School to City Centre – 4.7km The recently opened Hoon Hay section of the Quarryman’s Trail cycleway will keep your kids safe as they travel to and from school and into the city. Beginning and ending near Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre, this cycleway takes you past the Christchurch South Community Gardens on Strickland Street where you can pop in for a spot of gardening in return for some free goodies or simply leave a koha. Pootle down Antigua Street to the Antigua Boat Sheds where you can hire a canoe or kayak for the afternoon and enjoy a relaxing meander down the Avon.

Clinics in 2008 teaching women how to read maps and use a compass in preparation for the Spring Challenge (all women adventure race in NZ). Since then I have taught more than 3,000 ladies. But most importantly, becoming a mum and being able to encourage my son to love the outdoors.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ROGAINING? I started doing adventure racing back in 1998, when it first came to Brazil, where I am from. There I founded the first all-girls adventure racing team and since then I have competed in various prestigious international races like Eco-Challenge, Raid Gauloises and Southern Traverse being the team navigator. We achieved amazing results and beat lots of teams formed mainly by three men and one woman. I moved to New Zealand at the end of 2006 to live with my now husband, who introduced me to orienteering/rogaining. I started

it as a way to practice my navigation skills and become a better navigator for my adventure racing team. In 2009, my husband and I started organising the Wicked Rogaines events and since then we haven’t stopped. WHAT MAKES WHAT YOU DO UNIQUE? Anyone can do it. If you’ve ever loved treasure hunting then you will love rogaining too. It’s an event where people develop their map-reading skills, strategy, team work and get some exercise to boot! The team aspect is really supportive and can be quite social. Teams can do as much as they want, and go as hard as they want, in an event where they have a certain amount of time to collect as many points as they can. It’s great for families, athletes or weekend warriors.

HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DO YOU DEVOTE TO IT? Anywhere from 25 – 40 hours. I manage all the events, help design/check the courses, look after the advertising, branding and sponsorship. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Third place at the Adventure Racing World Championships in 2008, representing Brazil and being the best female, fifth overall at the Land Rover G4 Challenge (a four-week competition around Thailand, Laos, Brazil and Bolivia). Reaching the top of the Brazilian Adventure Racing Rank for two years in a row (racing with my girls team Atenah Brasil), helping with the growth of rogaining events – when we started, we had an average of 120 participants, 10 years later we have events with up to 550 participants. ANY ADVICE FOR THOSE WANTING TO GIVE IT A TRY? Give it a go. It’s a great opportunity to be outside, see different places, have fun with your friends and family, do some exercise, stay healthy and also stimulate the brain – all at the same time. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Being able to encourage people to be active and teach them some skills that I learnt during my adventure racing career. It feels so good to be able to provide people with an event where they all have lots of fun. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT ROGAINING? People sometimes struggle when they have to go for a run, having to find a loop suitable for the time they want to run for – we like to say that at our events, people manage to run without even noticing it! ORANGETHEORY FITNESS HOW DID YOU GET HOOKED ON ORANGETHEORY? I was going through a really hard time in my life. I had moved to Seattle and didn’t know very many people. Someone in my nutrition class had mentioned Orangetheory Fitness as a job opportunity, so I decided to check it out for myself and was hooked after one class! I felt community at OTF, I felt competition with myself and most of all I felt encouraged not only from the coaches and staff, but the people around me. Starting as a sales associate, I decided I wanted to be the person in charge of making people feel great and, after three years, I became head coach. WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND IT? OTF is heart-rate based interval training that is proven to burn calories post workout. We work to achieve the best version of ourselves by hitting different heart rate zones throughout the workout. If you took everyone in the room you’re sitting in and told everyone to get to 84% of their maximum heart rate we would all look a little different getting there depending on our lifestyle and background. Some may be power walking, some may be jogging and others will run, just like an OTF class. Now we are all in one room achieving our results that are customised for us and the rewards are insane! The best part is that the heart rate monitors tell you exactly

where you are during class and immediately sends your results to your email as you walk out the door. WHAT IS THE ‘ORANGE EFFECT’? The Orange Effect refers to the body’s reaction to spending 12+ minutes above 84% of your maximum heart rate in the one-hour class. The scientific term is EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption) and when you reach this goal of 12 minutes or more the body will continue to burn an additional 15 – 20 per cent of your normal daily calorie burn for a further 24 – 36 hours. Not only that, OTF is High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and this has been scientifically proven to increase energy and with OTF heart-rate technology, you know you are getting into those higher zones and completing a true HIIT workout!

HOW DID YOU FIND ORANGETHEORY IN NEW ZEALAND? One of the hardest things about leaving the US was knowing I could no longer work with our members to make positive changes in their lives, also no more Orangetheory workouts! After travelling and deciding to move to New Zealand, the excitement to hear about Orangetheory coming here was incredible. The first studio in Christchurch is almost complete and we can’t wait to share the OTF experience with our new members – it is something very special. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST MOTIVATOR? Myself. I wake up every day and decide how to live. What my body takes in, how my body moves and how I react to the things around me. I focus on positives, not negatives, and OTF helps me

Give it your best and have a little fun. If you’re new to fitness or you’re a competitive sport player be open to learning, ask questions and push yourself to new limits. When I started work as a personal trainer at Lincoln Recreation Centre, the manager Peter Magson suggested I use my cycle racing nous to broaden my personal training to start training people on bikes, not just in the gym. WHO IS YOUR TYPICAL CLIENT? I coach and mentor a mixture of secondary school students with a bundle of energy raring to find out how good they can be, and middleto later-aged athletes interested in improving their performance (but not being world beaters) and their health.

Back then, she would always take the mickey out of me for dancing like I was doing aerobics. Cityscape’s Deputy Editor Majka Kaiser breaks the ice and braves -110°C temps road testing the country’s first cyrotherapy pod at Cryotherapeutics NZ. A go-to treatment amongst celebs, when we heard Christchurch was getting its very own cryo pod (just doors down from our creative studio) we were first in line to experience the big chill. Not knowing quite what to expect I was naturally a little apprehensive, but Cryotherapeutics NZ director and self-confessed “cryo addict”, Anita Leney walks me through the simple process before I “get frozen”, as she puts it. Talking me through the benefits that range from alleviating chronic pain (that she’s personally suffered from for two decades) to reducing depression and anxiety, to improving sleep and skin conditions and assisting with weight loss, she assures me that two minutes in the freezing temperatures of the ‘pod’ pales in comparison with the overwhelming benefits. After stripping down to my underwear and slipping into a dressing gown and a pair of Ugg boots, I make my way to the pod. With Anita by my side every step of the way, she explains to me I can simply step out of the pod if it gets too much, but insists it’s “totally worth it”. With this in mind, I brace myself. Entering the pod through a space-age dry-ice mist, the frigid -110°C air is certainly a sharp shock to my system, but Anita keeps me talking to distract me from the icicles I’m certain must be forming on the surface of my epidermis and before I know it, the two minutes is up. Surprised by how quickly my body returns to its normal temperature, I am pleasantly surprised at how incredibly relaxed my body and mind is – so much so that I feel giddy with euphoria. Andy Teo and the Terrace Tavern/Dux tribe clue us in on what’s good drinking on the craft beer scene. Like most people during the perilous Christchurch winter I’ve been in hibernation, but I’m back and ready for spring with a staple from the boys at Ghost Brewing Co. Calling it “a new-school New Zealand draught”, this beer is celebrated in Christchurch circles. The Delicious Pale Ale, or DPA as it’s more commonly known on the street, is just higher in percentage than a mid-strength beer. With notes of citrus and passionfruit, it’s ideal for those who are craft curious, and even a great beer to start your day with. Adzuki Bean Tabouli

Our favourite biochemist nutritionist Dr Libby shares one of her favourite recipes perfect for putting a spring in your step and can be whipped up in just 20 minutes from her cookbook Dr Libby’s Real Food Kitchen. Serves 2-4

SHOPPING LIST

1. Rinse the soaked beans and add to a large pot with 1 litre of water. Cook on medium heat until just tender (squeeze a bean between your fingers to test if soft). Drain and transfer to a bowl. 2. Add the remaining tabouli ingredients to the bowl and season with salt and pepper. 3. In a bowl, combine the dressing ingredients and mix well. Taste and adjust seasoning if required. 4. Pour the dressing over the tabouli mixture and stir well. Taste and adjust seasoning if required. 5. Serve with a garden salad and grilled fish, or as a salad with a difference to accompany a family barbecue.

TABOULI 1 cup adzuki beans, soaked overnight in 4 cups of water 1 litre filtered water 1 bunch parsley, finely chopped 1 bunch mint, finely chopped ½ cup mung bean sprouts 3 Roma tomatoes, finely diced 1 cucumber, finely diced 1 red capsicum, deseeded and finely diced 2 spring onions, finely sliced Salt and pepper

NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION Although traditionally made with burghul wheat, this version of tabouli utilises adzuki beans, making it suitable for people who aren’t able to consume gluten. Adzuki beans are a great source of plant-based protein, and they’re packed full of vitamins, minerals and fibre. Tabouli also uses plenty of parsley, my favourite herb and a highly nutritious food I’d love people to eat daily.

Getting Present Cityscape catches up with contemporary UK artist, filmmaker and SCAPE Public Art contributor Tom Dale on living with the abstract and the absurd, avoiding ‘Retrospecticide’ and the politics of attention ahead of the 2018 season.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH A SCAPE COMMISSION? With a big run-up, momentum is everything when it comes to working on a project. Time it wrong and you fall flat on your face or, worse still, overshoot and disappear. Neither of which are dignified. Luckily SCAPE is big on dignity for everyone, so I am super happy with the way in which the whole process has happened. It’s all been about bringing people and ideas together that enable us to make the most of the opportunity and platform the commission gives. HOW DOES POST-QUAKE CHRISTCHURCH INSPIRE YOUR WORK? Even before landing in Christchurch, flying in over the Waimakariri River, with its sinew of many changing channels, I’m struck by what a visible presence change has in this city, but I’m especially struck by how much the city has reacted to, and embedded ways that enable living with change be it sudden or gradual. WHAT WAS THE FEEDBACK AFTER A CAGE FOR VOICES VIDEO SCREENED ON BRITISH TV? The simple act of dropping objects into the water and filming them falling captivated many people. There’s something very emotive about things falling away, and the ways in which we accept change and let go of things – that seems to

be a neglected aspect of many peoples’ lives and culture. It is perhaps even banal to say it, but our capacity for embracing and adapting to change seems directly connected to our sense of wellbeing and continuity. Living with the abstract and absurd, whether you see that as something political, elemental or technological, is something we all have to find the capacity to do if we are to get even a whiff of happiness (assuming you want that of course). So the reaction seemed to be mainly to the poetic nature of the film, and thinking about what’s to gain by letting go. A CAGE OF VOICES WAS SHOT UNDERWATER AND THE RED ZONE FROM THE AIR, WHICH WAS MORE DIFFICULT? Filming in the air is actually more complicated because, despite airspace being empty, it is full of rules and regulations. Thankfully when we filmed The Red Zone everyone was amazingly supportive and really wanted it to happen, so I have very few bureaucracy scars to show for it. WHAT DID YOU GET UP TO DURING YOUR WELLINGTON RESIDENCY? From the moment I stepped off the plane to the moment I got back on, I was making new work because of the brilliant support and amazing opportunities I had here. If I’m honest, I was bitterly disappointed as I had planned to spend 3 – 4 weeks coffee tasting and tanning, but instead I made more work than I had all year. That’s how it is though when you have people willing to wear bright green morph suits for you, or let off explosives. You have to react and respond otherwise you feel as though you’re somehow letting the world pass by. WHAT IS THE WORST THING SOMEONE HAS SAID ABOUT YOUR WORK AND HOW DID YOU RESPOND? “I like it, but can I have it in red?” I painted it blue. TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE PIECE? For me it’s always the next one, because I’m constantly on the trail of finding new ways of seeing the world anew. That’s where the satisfaction is for me, rather than restating things or being praised for a specific work you’re expected to repeat over and over again. There is a reason why I refer to retrospective exhibitions of an artists’ work up to a certain point as ‘Retrospecticide’, as you can so easily become captive to certain ways of working or being seen.

It seemed to me that our ability to effect change is always based on our capacity for attention. The politics of attention are, for me, of the utmost urgency for us to understand right now. We only have to look at the significant changes around the world to see how real debate always suffers if we are not able to really engage. The situation in the USA and the UK right now is testament to that. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO ALBUM TO GET THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING? If I’m in the studio or doing a build-heavy install, Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti helps me swing the axe. If it’s trying things out, wanting to be absorbed in things, then Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works 85-92 enables me to float through walls. SCAPE CELEBRATES ITS 20TH BIRTHDAY THIS YEAR – HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE YOURS? You know the scene in Ghostbusters where they cross beams to save the city from the giant marshmallow man?
