You’ll find a lot to love here, with the unique opportunity to experience a city on the rebuild. This city is jam-packed with exciting discoveries and numerous ‘only in Christchurch’ type experiences (hint: you’ll wanna take a camera with you everywhere!), from Re:START Container Mall and funky Gap Filler initiatives through to hip bars and restaurants, and world-class dining and shopping. Bounded by the Southern Alps, miles of endless coastline, vineyards and braided rivers, Christchurch offers a whole lot of spectacular scenery and activities both inside and out of the city, and this publication is designed to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Enjoy the ride!

my city is

your city Greetings fellow Earthlings! You are now in the only city in the world that has a real university-trained and government appointed resident Arch-Wizard. I have had a high profile since I arrived in Christchurch in 1974 since I enjoy nothing more than a friendly chat and the exchange of ideas. Recently some trainee wizards have joined me in the city centre, where you may come across one or two of us around lunchtime getting on and off the trams or sipping coffee outside the brightlycoloured Spanish Mission-style villas lining New Regent Street, our home base. Nearby the Christchurch City Council has marked out a special Wizard’s Parking place where I can park my modified VW Beetle, which has to be seen to be believed. Although our Garden City with its Anglican heritage suffered a catastrophic earthquake in 2011, we are slowly getting back on our feet again and still warmly welcome visitors. While it’s true we have lost a lot, there’s still so much to see and do here, from world-class dining to exciting and ingenious nightlife, exploring the great outdoors and some exceptional shopping from some of the most innovative boutiques you are likely to find anywhere. However, since whole city blocks have been levelled, you may find it hard to know where you are sometimes – which is why you’ll find this handy, in-room guide indispensible on your visit. And if you’re wondering why the first properly trained wizards in modern history would make their home in Christchurch, it’s because of its history, its location on the edge of the world, its lively music and theatre, and the astonishing variety of scenery all within easy access of the city is pure magic! Welcome to Christchurch. The Arch-Wizard of New Zealand QSM

this is

Christchurch Packed with culture, oozing with character and having a cheeky charm all of its own, Christchurch is a city unlike any other. Whether you’re up for a swanky dinner and a night on the tiles, indulging in some serious retail therapy or hankering for a cultural fix, there’s much to discover in this resilient city on the rebuild.

T

here’s a lot more shaking in Christchurch than the ground in this city on the rise. The South Island’s largest city (still) and a perfect base for exploring a region packed with adventures, Christchurch is a regular on ‘top places in the world to visit’-type lists as it rebuilds with a healthy dose of innovation and quirk following devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. Long heralded as one of New Zealand’s most beautiful cities, Christchurch had traditionally been known for parks and gardens, Gothic revival stone buildings and the tranquil Avon River snaking through the central city. But that was the old Christchurch: in late 2010 and early 2011, the city was subjected to severe earthquakes which damaged or destroyed many of its most famous heritage buildings and atmospheric shopping precincts. However, Christchurch is still a very rewarding place to visit – if for quite different reasons. As the city

rebuilds, unique responses and solutions to the quake make for exceptional, Christchurch-only experiences including upmarket shipping container shopping malls, the Cardboard Cathedral, food truck convoys, large scale outdoor art exhibitions/murals, and endless pop up boutiques. On the city’s fringe many areas were minimally affected by the seismic upheaval and offer buzzing cafés and nightlife, with new entertainment precincts filled with exciting, brand-spanking-new hospitality options opening almost on the daily. Beyond the city limits, in the surrounding landscape of Canterbury, outdoor adventures abound, from mountain biking, swimming with dolphins (the world’s smallest!) at Akaroa (where back in the day, the French made their sole effort at colonising New Zealand – epic fail, though a certain je ne sais quoi remains), and white water rafting to hiking and, in winter, skiing at one of the region’s several commercial and club fields. ADDINGTON

SYDENHAM

where it’s at Getting your bearings in and around the Garden City. 1 Downtown Colourful container mall Re:START is at the heart here – you’ll find stellar eateries and hip cafes straddling iconic attractions like the historic Spanish-Mission style New Regent Street (home to boutique shopping and good coffee), the iconic Isaac Theatre Royal, the Christchurch Art Gallery and CoCA (Centre of Contemporary Art), Canterbury Museum, the Botanic Gardens and Antigua Boat Sheds, and the Christchurch Cathedral ruins. Victoria Street has become a new central hospitality/ nightlife hub, with High Street and St Asaph Street not far behind. The rebuilding CBD is also home to plenty of vibrant and spectacular big-scale street art painting the town. 2 Addington/Sydenham On the southwest edge of the CBD, Addington has shrugged off its industrial heritage, but not completely. The SOMO (South of Moorhouse Avenue) ‘it’ district fuses funky bars and restaurants with the cultural institution that is The Court Theatre. Nearby Sydenham, also in the city’s south, has experienced a post-quake renaissance and offers boutique shopping (centred around trendy

retail centre The Colombo) and some good cafés, bars and dining options, including Dragons Den Social Lounge. 3 Merivale North of the city centre lies the upmarket suburb of Merivale. Rocking a fierce mix of designer fashion, homewares, gourmet goodies, slinky bars and eateries (and having upmarket Merivale Mall as its hub) boosts the area’s street cred as a shopping Mecca and essential after-dark haunt. 4 Riccarton West of the city centre, Riccarton’s entertainment HQ combines a sprawling mall (New Zealand’s third-largest) and high street shopping with international eats and buzzing bars, with several motels nestled along its main drag.

Woolston New vitality has been breathed into this former industrial area thanks to The Tannery. This Victorian-flavoured boutique/retail emporium epitomises destination shopping. Retro wares, gourmet foods, craft brewing, fashion and design stores and more are all on offer.

Sumner While it suffered considerable damage in the earthquakes, the seaside village of Sumner remains minutes from the city and miles from care, and is laced with fine fare, slick bars and intriguing shops all packaged in a stunning beachside setting. Lyttelton Home to the legendary

Wunderbar and a scattering of hip bars, cafés, bangin’ restaurants (including New Zealand’s Restaurant of the Year 2015 winner Roots), eclectic shops and a popular Saturday morning farmers’ market, this quirky portside town is a must visit.

Back in the day

Archaeological evidence suggests Christchurch was first settled by Moa (a large, flightless and now extinct bird similar in appearance to an ostrich)-hunting tribes around 1250 AD.

Eat like a master chef Top chefs know where it’s at on the local foodie scene, so with this in mind What’s Hot Christchurch tapped into the culinary genius of Dragons Den Social Lounge’s international award-winning chef Andrew Brown for the lowdown on his fave eats in the city. Kinji Japanese Restaurant This excellent example of Japanese cuisine can be found tucked away deep in the ’burbs (297B Greers Road, Bryndwr). Friendly efficient service with fresh, well-executed dishes that never disappoint from chef/owner Kinji are the order of the day. The BYO wine option is also an added bonus. Hello Sunday Café There’s an awesome vibe to this café offering great coffee and superb cooked-to-order dishes and counter food. The go-to dish is the Japanese Crepe, similar to an Okonomiyaki – it’s so delicious! 6 Elgin Street, Sydenham Pescatore (at the George Hotel) It’s hard not to be biased with

so many years involved with this restaurant, but chef Reon still delivers cutting-edge cuisine coupled with a seamless dining experience and impeccable service. Cleverly crafted dishes with often unique food pairings abound, but the standout for me is the sugar globe filled with all manner of flavours and textures – mind blowing! 50 Park Terrace, City Canterbury Cheesemongers Not only the place to find a huge range of well-cared for local and international cheeses, they also offer some of the best artisan-style breads in the city. #madeinchch Untouched World

F

irm believers that you don’t need to sacrifice luxury to be good to the planet, Untouched World lives out its name by avoiding making a harmful mark on Earth, as well as removing marks left by others (not to mention saving kiwi and empowering youth!). Working from founder Peri Drysdale’s philosophy “to provide a platform for growth of the human spirit based on a foundation of environmental sustainability and renewal”, they consider sustainability in everything they do – from utilising sustainablygrown fibres, certified-organic dyes and water-based prints through to what to do with the staff’s banana skins after lunch! No surprises then that Untouched World are the only lifestyle fashion company in the world to be officially recognised by the United Nations for sustainability

practices. As well as being good to the planet, they’re also innovators in fashion technology. Their unique Ecopossum blend of Merino, Brushtail possum and silk was the first textile to add a new natural fibre in over 200 years(!) when they developed it in 1992 (and also helps us to get rid of a few more pesky tree-and-bird destroying pests!). Meanwhile, their machine-washable Mountainsilk Merino is almost made like a fine wine – such is the meticulous care that goes into its production – their organic, 100% bamboo fabric is possibly the most environmentally sustainable fabric there is, and the cotton they use is certified organic. Tag in fashionforward collections and cuttingedge styling and of course President Obama, Prince Harry, and Joanna Lumley are going to be fans!

very crafty Christchurch has a burgeoning reputation for brewing up some of the country’s best craft beers. Jumped on the craft beer/boutique beer appreciation train yet? With increasing numbers of brew-pubs, beer-focussed hospitality venues, boutique beer stores and local craft breweries popping up, Christchurch might just be getting ideas about giving Wellington and Nelson a run for their money in the contest to be the nation’s craft beer capital. Here are some of the local hop-heroes.

Three Boys Family-owned Three Boys Brewery have made their name with the personal attention they pay to each of their smallscale brews, carefully mothering each batch until their unfiltered, unpasteurised beer leaves their Woolston brewery. The approach has seen them rack up awards aplenty, and demand sees their beer exported as far as the UK.

Eagle Brewing Former engineer David Gaughan followed his true passion by creating Eagle Brewing (formerly Golden Eagle Brewery) in 2010. David’s beers have been making a name for themselves since the get-go, with the likes of the Big Yank American IPA (a dark, hoppy IPA at 7.5%) and the blackerthan-black Coalface Stout picking up plenty of dedicated fans both locally and nationally.

Raindogs Brewing Co. Raindogs sneak bold and tasty beers out into the local scene. Local ingredients are used in the creation of brews like the Apothecary Amber, brewed with Kiwi hops, and the stylebending (and grammatically apt) Oxymoron Black IPA, a hoppy, drinkable IPA-like beer that is nonetheless black as a stout or porter (drink with your eyes closed to minimise confusion!).
