CLINICAL ACTIVITIES 2000 – 2002

Co-led introduction of intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for gynecologic oncology patients. Impact: One of only three academic sites nationally to perform IMRT in this clinical indication at the time. This treatment is now adopted as the standard-of-care.

2002

Led clinical implementation of ultrasound-based image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) for prostate. Impact: First clinical program to offer ultrasound-based IGRT technology to patients in the Mid-Atlantic region.

2002 – 2005

Primary medical physicist performing ultrasound-guided I-125 and Cs-131 prostate seed implant and high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy for gynecology and breast cancer with radiation oncologist. Impact: First clinical program to initiate prostate seed radiation therapy with Cs-131 to intermediate and high-risk prostate cancer patients in the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

2002 – 2008

Performed routine machine calibration and quality assurance, treatment planning and patient-specific treatment quality assurance as part of clinical medical physics team at University of Maryland. Impact: Supported ongoing therapeutic safety and precision.

3

D’Souza, W. D.

2003

Collaborated with clinical team to commission and introduce the Pinnacle3 planning system for routine intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment planning. Impact: Over 50% of patients treated with radiation therapy at University of Maryland receive IMRT, which results in the minimization of organ-atrisk and normal tissue exposure to high doses.

2004

Led clinical adoption of breath-hold techniques for breast cancer treatment to improve treatment setup reproducibility and decrease cardiac toxicity. Impact: Breast and lung patients treated with radiation therapy received less dose to the heart and lung tissues.

2005

Led clinical implementation of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) program, which improved patient convenience by reducing number of treatments while maintaining outcomes. Impact: Over 200 patients have been successfully treated in the last five years.

2006 – 2009

Member of clinical team and primary medical physicist for Gamma Knife Radiosurgery program. Impact: Ongoing support for clinical program, which treated > 200 patients during this time-frame.

2007

Led clinical implementation team for advanced image-guided therapy techniques such (e.g. 4D CT imaging and tumor motion management using “gated” radiation therapy). Impact: Advanced motion management therapy techniques are standardof-care for thoracic and abdominal tumors. 200+ patients have now been treated using advanced motion management techniques.

2008 – present

Provide administrative oversight of a clinical division that comprises 19 faculty, 19 staff and 12 trainees.

2008 - present

Provide direct oversight of radiation oncology medical physics program (daily census of 200 patients) at the academic medical center and three community practice affiliates.

2008 - present

Develop annual capital budget requests involving state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment with hospital partners within UMMS. Impact: Negotiated approximately > $12 million in savings on capital equipment through collaborative partnerships with medical device vendors.

2008

Collaborated with executive team as technical lead to develop request for proposals for new for radiation oncology imaging, planning and delivery

D’Souza, W. D.

technologies at the University of Maryland Radiation Oncology Medical Pavilion at Howard County site (a joint venture with Johns Hopkins). Impact: Facilitated the acquisition and deployment of clinical technology to support clinical program at a community practice. 2012 - 2013

Led strategy, business plan development and implementation of strategy with UMMS Chief Information Officer’s office and Oncology service line leadership to centralize and integrate the Department of Radiation Oncology’s information technology and clinical applications system infrastructure. Impact: Will create a centralized information systems infrastructure that will enable greater clinical integration, implementation of clinical practice guidelines and lead to $2.5 million in savings to UMMS over 5 years.

2012 - present

Chair the steering committee to determine acquisition of new technology, clinical practice guidelines using acquired technology and participated in the development of clinical treatment guidelines across multiple clinical sites. Impact: Provide guidance on the acquisition and adoption of new technology.
