APPLICATION AND ADMISSIONS GUIDELINES

The Master of Public Health (MPH) Program is a professional degree program that is administratively based in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine within the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. The MPH Program provides graduate students, medical, and other health professional students with graduate training in public health. The Master of Public Health program seeks qualified candidates with an educational background sufficient to succeed in graduate-level public health coursework. Applicants are expected to provide a clear rationale for applying to the program; have an ability to communicate clearly in writing; demonstrate significant quantitative and analytical skills; and possess career goals consistent with public health. To be eligible to apply to the MPH program, applicants must possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, and have experience relevant to public health. Students who are accepted to or enrolled in one of the professional degree programs on the UMB campus are eligible to apply to the MPH program as “dual-degree” program students. The dual degree programs include the DDS/MPH, JD/MPH, MSW/MPH, MS Nursing/MPH, MD/MPH, PharmD/MPH. Admission to the dualdegree program is contingent upon the applicant having a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, enrollment in and good academic standing within the UMB professional school, and experience relevant to public health. Applicants choose one of two areas of concentration:  

Epidemiology Community & Population Health

All students take a core of courses designed to provide the basic knowledge necessary for the understanding of public health. Students also must take several required courses in their chosen concentration area. The capstone experience portion of the MPH curriculum is provided by an internship in an area of public health as practiced in state, federal or other public health related agencies, giving students the opportunity to observe, and apply their knowledge base in the world of public health practice. The degree requires completion of 42 credit hours. MPH tuition rate is per credit hour and can be found at http://www.fincsvc.umaryland.edu/sa/images/grad.pdf. Financial aid information is available at The Financial Assistance & Education Office: http://www.umaryland.edu/fin/index.html. Admissions policies are as follows: ●

Applicants must have evidence of strong academic achievement. Individuals with work experience in a field relevant to public health are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must provide a copy of an up-to-date curriculum vitae (CV) or resume indicating previous education and work experience, as well as any awards, scholarships, or academic honors.

Applicants are expected to have an educational background sufficient to succeed in graduate-level public health courses. Applicants must have completed college algebra or a more advanced math course (i.e. college calculus, statistics, trigonometry, finite math). Earned college credit for Advanced Placement Math must be reflected on your college transcript. It is recommended that the applicant have at least one undergraduate level course in biology and one in social science. Students are expected to have acquired computer skills prior to admission. Please see individual concentration descriptions for possible additional prerequisites. Under special circumstances, students lacking adequate preparation may begin the program provisionally and be advised at the time of admission on how to remedy any deficiencies.

Applicants must provide three letters of recommendation from academic advisors, faculty members, employers or other supervisors.

Applicants must submit official scores from one of the following: Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT); Law School Admission Test (LSAT), Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT), Dental Admission Test (DAT); Veterinary Admissions Test (VCAT). International applicants whose native language is not English are required to submit a score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The minimum requirement for the TOEFL is a score of 213 electronic, 550 non-electronic, or 80 internet based. Students who took the English test as part of the ECFMG in the past can use that in place of the TOEFL. Applicants for one of the UMB dual-MPH degrees may provide copies of their transcripts, standard admissions test and TOEFL scores from the admissions office in their primary program.

The non-degree status is for students seeking admission to enhance their knowledge by completing one or more MPH courses. While the MPH Program may later consider accepting credits earned while in non-degree status, there is no assurance that it will do so. In cases where the MPH Program does grant such a request, however, no more than 6 credits will transfer to a degree program.

Other factors considered in the determination of a student's potential for success in the MPH Program are the candidate's long- range goals and commitment to public health, work and volunteer experience related to the concentration's public health focus, and public health experience or interest. An Application is considered complete when the MPH Program has received the information below. The Admissions and Progression Committee reserves the right to request additional information as needed.
