Hydrogen instead of Natural Gas – Elcowire and Helsingborg City start unique collaboration

Helsingborg City is exploring the potential of creating a hydrogen cluster, a group of companies and institutions working together to establish hydrogen as a sustainable energy source in the local system. The city, through its innovation fund, is financing a pre- study in collaboration with Öresundskraft, Kemira Kemi, and Elcowire. The study aims to evaluate using hydrogen as a fuel and industrial input instead of natural gas. Hydrogen's potential to help the city achieve its climate goals is the main reason for this initiative.

The innovation fund has allocated 400,000 SEK for the "Local Green Hydrogen" study to see if local industry can switch to hydrogen. The analysis will be carried out by Öresundskraft, Kemira Kemi, and Elcowire.

Paul Gustavsson, CEO of Elcowire Group:

"This strategy aligns with our climate-neutral goals, and hydrogen offers a significant opportunity to replace natural gas. By exploring hydrogen, we can reduce our climate footprint and ensure a sustainable energy supply."

Anders Fredriksson Kleine, Senior Strategist at Öresundskraft:

"Switching from natural gas to hydrogen in industry is crucial for reducing carbon emissions and achieving our climate goals. Hydrogen is cleaner and can help balance our energy system."

The study will start after the summer holidays, with results presented in the fourth quarter of this year.

By converting to hydrogen, the CO2 emissions from Elcowire's production would decrease by 9,200 tons, equivalent to the emissions from 2,000 normal passenger cars driven for one year on fossil fuels.
