REMINDER FROM THE POA: Landscaping Information and Easement

Palm Tree Trimming

General Landscaping Reminder

Currently, the only approved materials for mulch beds are pine bark and golden cypress mulch.

Palm and Yard Debris

Please instruct your landscapers and lawn maintenance personnel to refrain from depositing trimmings and debris on or near our storm drains. As rainy season is upon us, much of this debris winds up draining down into and clogging our storm sewers. We found out the hard way this happens during last year’s June 4th storm, where we ended up with knee-high water that was not draining on Bahama Isle.

Easement Palm Maintenance

We wanted to take this opportunity to again remind homeowners that you are responsible for the care and trimming of your easement palms. To confirm, these are the palms between the sidewalk and the street. Notifying your existing landscaper/lawn maintenance personnel that these palms need to be included in the maintenance if your property is a good first step. If you have your palms maintained sepa-

rately, or don’t have palm maintenance performed at all, below are companies already operating in our community you may wish to consider: NOTEThese companies are not “endorsed” by the POA, we are simply passing this along as potentially helpful information for homeowners. Use them at your own risk and discretion.

*Green Oaks Services, Felix Hernandez 813-850-1327 (They also trim higher palm trees)

* Joe Cox 813-820-2434

*Outcast Landscaping 813-562-8401

*H&M Landscaping, Henry Mulgar 813-241-7162

*Marin Landscaping, Josh Marin 813418-1747

*EG Lawn and Landscape 813-8632612

Yellow does not necessarily mean dead!

In order to keep palms green and the yellowing at bay, homeowners need to fertilize your palms 2-3 times a year. One such fertilizer to consider is Vigoro, which can be found at a large garden center on Bruce B Downs.

Battling Ganoderma: Protecting Florida's Palms and Rebuilding Community Canopies

Introduction: In recent years, our beloved community in Florida has faced a heartbreaking loss – the iconic canary palms that once graced our streets have fallen victim to the insidious Ganoderma disease. As we mourn the loss of these majestic trees, it's crucial for us to come together and take proactive steps to protect the remaining palms. In this article, we'll explore how to prevent and spot Ganoderma disease, identify vulnerable palm trees, and suggest actions to take if you suspect your tree may be affected.

Understanding Ganoderma Disease: Ganoderma disease is caused by fungi within the Ganoderma genus, targeting the lower trunk of palm trees. The infection leads to a gradual decay, weakening the tree and, unfortunately, often resulting in its demise. The community has witnessed the devastating impact of Ganoderma on canary palms, emphasizing the need for

collective action to safeguard our remaining green canopies.

Preventing Ganoderma Disease:

1. Planting Resilient Palms: While no palm tree is entirely immune, some species demonstrate higher resistance to Ganoderma. Consider planting palms like the sago palm (Cycas revoluta), paurotis palm (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii), or cabbage palm (Sabal palmetto), which have shown increased resistance to the disease.

2. Sanitation Practices: Regularly clean and sterilize pruning tools to prevent the spread of Ganoderma spores. Avoid using equipment that has been in contact with infected palms on healthy trees.

3. Proper Watering Techniques: Ensure palms receive adequate but not excessive irrigation. Well-draining soil is crucial, as waterlogged conditions create an environment conducive to Ganoderma fungi.

Spotting Ganoderma Disease:

1. Crown Decline: Watch for wilting or discoloration of the crown, where leaves may turn brown, and the overall canopy may appear sparse and unhealthy.

2. Conk Formation: Keep an eye out for the distinctive shelf-like structures, or conks, on the lower trunk. Conks release spores and signify advanced stages of Ganoderma infection.

3. Trunk Decay: Inspect the trunk for soft spots, cankers, or signs of decay. Ganoderma disease compromises the internal structure of the palm, leading to a weakened trunk.

What to Do if You Suspect Ganoderma:

1. Consult a Professional Arborist: If you notice any signs of Ganoderma, contact a certified arborist immediately. They can conduct a thorough assessment and rec-

ommend appropriate measures.

2. Isolate and Monitor: Quarantine the affected palm to prevent further spread. Monitor nearby trees for signs of infection and take preventive measures.

3. Consider Removal and Replacement: In cases of advanced infection, removal may be the only viable option. Replace the affected palm with a more resistant species to fortify the community against future outbreaks.

Conclusion: As we work together to protect our community's cherished palms from Ganoderma, let's honor the memory of those we've lost by fostering a resilient and

vibrant urban forest. Through careful planning, vigilant monitoring, and collaboration, we can rebuild our community canopies and ensure a greener, healthier future for generations to come.

Protecting Florida's Palms: A Guide to Preventing and Spotting Ganoderma Disease

Introduction: Florida's iconic palm trees are not only a source of natural beauty but also play a vital role in the state's unique ecosystem. However, a growing concern in recent years is the prevalence of Gano-

derma disease, a fungal infection that poses a threat to various palm species. In this article, we'll discuss how to prevent and spot Ganoderma disease, as well as identify which palm trees are more susceptible or immune to this challenging condition.

Understanding Ganoderma Disease: Ganoderma disease is caused by various species of fungi within the Ganoderma genus. These fungi primarily attack the lower trunk of palm trees, causing a decay that can lead to the tree's decline and eventual death. The disease spreads through spores, which can be transported by wind, rain, or contaminated tools.

Preventing Ganoderma Disease:

1. Planting Resistant Palms: Choosing palm species that are less susceptible to Ganoderma disease is the first line of defense. While no palm tree is completely immune, some species have shown higher resistance. Consider planting species such as the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis), sago palm (Cycas revoluta), or the paurotis palm (Acoelorrhaphe wrightii), which are known to be less prone to Ganoderma infection.

2. Avoiding Contamination: Practice proper sanitation measures to prevent the spread of Ganoderma spores. Clean and sterilize pruning tools regularly, and avoid using equipment that has been in contact with infected palms on healthy trees.

3. Balanced Watering: Overwatering can create conditions favorable for Ganoderma fungi. Ensure that palms receive proper irrigation without excess water accumulation around the base. Well-draining soil is crucial to discourage fungal growth.

Spotting Ganoderma Disease:

1. Crown Wilt and Discoloration: Ganoderma-infected palms often exhibit wilting or discoloration of the crown (the top portion of the tree). Leaves may turn brown, and the overall canopy may appear sparse and unhealthy.

2. Conk Formation: One of the most characteristic signs of Ganoderma disease is the formation of conks or shelf-like structures on the lower trunk. These conks release spores and indicate advanced stages of infection.

3. Trunk Decay: Inspect the trunk for soft spots, cankers, or areas with decay. Ganoderma fungi cause the breakdown of the palm's internal structure, leading to a weakened and compromised trunk.

Conclusion: Protecting Florida's palm trees from Ganoderma disease requires a proactive approach involving careful selection of palm species, sanitation practices, and vigilant monitoring. By following these guidelines, residents and landscapers can contribute to the preservation of the state's iconic palm trees and maintain the beauty of their communities.

HOROSCOPES

Aluna's Zodiac

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

– Happy birthday Leo! Mercury retrogrades this month, healing hinderances you have about full self-expression. Meditate about body image, blocked artistic talents, inhibition in relationships, or anything that thwarts your joy! Forgive yourself and challenging circumstances. Make a list of small steps to take to move closer toward your goals. Being “selfish” can be empowering as a Leo who doesn’t feel as queenly as you could! Watch my Leo video on my website for added inspiration.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) – Mercury retrogrades in your sign, which is wonderful for soothing patterns of anxiety. Check out “havening” exercises, designed to re-set your nervous system. Incorporate gentle, compassionate self-talk for even more results. If you have work struggles, hang in there until mid-September, when things can resolve in your favor without much effort. Exercise even if you feel tired to move frustration out of your body!

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

– Like Virgo pals, you can feel lots of physical tension. Try extra cardio, or more vigorous yoga. Be with people who you can fully express yourself with. Meditate about your perception of “spiritual authority”. Do you feel that God/ Universe demands you be quiet and passive? Does God love you when you’re angry, passionate or ambitious? Expand your vision of spiritual support to nurture all parts of yourself, even if those parts are dark or challenging!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) – As a Scorpio, you are passionate, driven and alive! This month’s Mercury retrograde asks you to ponder whether or not your relationship partner

AUGUST2024

can handle your intensity. It’s a time where you’ll feel frustrated if you can’t be fully sexual, unbridled and primal. This doesn’t mean being angry, but it means being uncensored and uninhibited. Seek out ways that your sacred depths can be expressed and honored within your closest partnerships.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) – If partnered, old issues can surface for deeper healing this month. Take extra meditation time, since Mercury is retrograde and can illuminate hidden causes you’ve overlooked. If single, you can see patterns in other relationships that might make you hesitate to open your heart. Even issues at work can be revealed so you become more successful and prosperous. Don’t be afraid to dig in the muck of your fears, shame and subconscious to find the gold!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) – Like your Sag pals, you’ll have breakthroughs that help you open your heart! You’ll be able to maintain healthy boundaries and have healthy confrontation. Surprisingly, this will create more intimacy in all types of relationships. This month’s Mercury retrograde helps you tap back into spiritual practices that worked in the past. You can re-commit and flourish in a new way that makes you more emotionally steady and more optimistic.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 –Feb. 18) – If starting a new relationship, be patient with yourself about past memories coming to mind. Meditate on the fact that now is now, yet ask about the lesson in these issues re-surfacing. It’s likely you need to assure your heart that it’s safe to connect, and that you’ll be vigilant about red flags. Open yourself to this potential healing bond! If already partnered, believe repeated patterns between you can heal. Also, get back to

prosperity affirmations to blast away any blocks to abundance.

Pisces (Feb. 19 –March 20) – If you’re having trouble sleeping, or having anxiety issues, try physical approaches and not just ones that are emotional. Explore the concept of the vagus nerve and incorporate techniques to create vagal tone and alignment. There can be foods overstimulating you, like sugar, caffeine or even MSG. Be firm with people in your life about the fact that you’ll be making changes to soothe your system, and about carving out the time you’ll need.

Aries (March 21 – April 19) — Be aware of how your thoughts affect your body. Make time for meditation, even if it’s slow deep breathing for 5 minutes. Watch for negative self-talk that is nearly submerged behind daily hustle-bustle, yet still has a major impact on your mental and physical health. Learn to think about yourself with compassion. Set protective boundaries from habitual interior harshness. Have a zero tolerance policy for all that crud and it will fade away!

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) – This month’s Full Moon can bring breakthroughs at work. Things unfold in portions, so definitely celebrate, but stay consistent so more good stuff is revealed through September! If you’ve had health issues, try speaking kind words to your body. Praise its strengths! That positive energy will inspire you toward better behaviors and choices. In this way, you won’t feel burdened by punitive regimens, you’ll just be

doing nice things for yourself. Connect with old friends you admire who are cheery and upbeat!

Gemini (May 21 –June 20) – Mars and Jupiter combine to give you lots of enthusiasm for plan and projects! Yet also be patient, since good old Mercury retrograde can delay results. Stay poised and consistent, because late next month you’ll be excited for what you’ve accomplished. Thought energy is very fast and sometimes your visualizations can’t manifest until you let go in faith so the energy can slow down in order to materialize. Try not to worry, which keeps energy spinning at a high rate. Devote time to fun activities with friends and the give the Universe time to make magic for you!

Cancer (June 21 – July 22) – This month’s Mercury retrograde wants you to be extra compassionate towards yourself! Your meditations reveal patterns of “your inner mean girl”. Stand up to those negative voices! Of course we can grown and improve, but spiritual prompting are kind and inspiring, not cruel and debilitating. So if it’s mean, shut it down and don’t listen! You can have financial abundance flowing in that’s been delayed for months. Also, breakthroughs happen in relationships where there’s been stalemates.
