LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER It sure feels like Summer, but we still have till the 21st before the official kick-off. Then a long haul from there; as you all know. Being a native Floridian, aka Florida Cracker, I am quite use to the heat. Inside this issue are some exceptional Prom pictures from Wharton High School. It looks like they all had a very exciting time. For the July issue, send us your beginning of summer, vacation and outdoor fun pictures and any special stories you would like to share. We are loading up our Facebook with all the extra pictures and now video from community events. Visit our Facebook at YOUR Community newsletters and become a friend. You can then post your comments, events, and pictures during the month. By the way, Florida Cracker means the old-time Florida Cowboys who use to crack their whips while herding, not a crispy wheat square. :) Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's in Hunter's Green!!

Let Your Backyard Sell Your Home P

atios, pools and lanais are all season living spaces in Florida. They are very important to buyers and can make or break a sale. Approach decorating an outdoor space whether it’s a screened lanai or open patio as you would an indoor living space. It should reflect easy living, ready for the new buyers to just pour the lemonade. If the lanai or pool deck needs to be repainted, get it done because it will more than pay for itself. Clear the area of any dead plants, old or broken furniture, clutter of any kind. If the area is screened, replace any that are in disrepair. If you have a large area divide the space into different purposes. One section for dining, another for lounging or hobbies like gardening or stargazing. Like indoor rooms, outdoor spaces need a focal point around which furnishings revolve. This can be a grouping of furniture, flooring design, fountain, plants, etc. Don’t overcrowd the space. When selling you want to give the impression of a larger area. Remember to tie the space into the yard around it, this is your

HG NEWS

view. The lawn needs to be cut, edged and fertilized. Fences should be cleaned or painted, hedges trimmed. When buyers see a well maintained home and yard they assume that the items they can’t readily see are also maintained. Finish off the area with lighting and accessories. You can use lighting made to weather the elements or inexpensive table lamps from Target. Candles are also great in all sizes and shapes. Next use bright textured throw pillows to warm up the furniture and a throw rug to define a space. Plants and flowers are the finishing touch. Paying attention to your backyard space will get you a faster sale and for more money. For more information on selling your home contact Liz DeAmbrose at Coldwell Banker 813-956-6487 or homenet@gte.net. HG

Start Something BIG in Hunter's Green By Jan Roberts, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay

B

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is part of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer-supported mentoring network. We’ve been around for more than 45 years in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco counties, and more than 100 years nationally. Our mission is to provide children who are facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives forever. Most children served by Big Brothers Big Sisters are in single-parent and lowincome families or households where a parent is incarcerated. Our mentors help these children discover and realize their potential to succeed and thrive in life—just by being a friend. When at-risk children have Big Brothers or Big Sisters in their lives, they gain a lot—namely increased confidence, greater success in school and

HG NEWS

a more positive outlook on life. It costs about $1,000 a year to support a match between a “Big” and a “Little,” which pays for background screening, training and ongoing support and supervision. On the other hand, incarcerating a youth costs $60,000 a year. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay currently has more than 2,000 Little Brothers and Little Sisters who are matched up with mentors and we’ve been serving that number consistently for many years now. But we always have more youth waiting for mentors. We especially need Big Brothers in Hunter's Green. Most of our volunteers are what we call community-based Bigs—they spend nine hours a month doing low or no-cost activities out in the community with their Littles. We also have a site-based program where Bigs visit their Littles at school for an

hour a week. We have a strong site-based program here in Hillsborough County. Every week during the school year, you’ll also find high school student Big Brothers and Big Sisters visiting their Littles at various elementary schools. For every site-based volunteer in Hillsborough, we have almost two community-based volunteers. Hunter's Green residents who are interested in becoming a mentor or donating funds to support our programs can call Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay at (813) 769-3600 or enroll online at www.bbbsfl.org. The Foundation already funds two residents at the Colorado State University Animal Cancer Center. The Furry Fitness Challenge isn’t all about the animals, though—it’s about the pet owner, too. A pet can be a great motivator to go for that walk!” The Furry Fitness Challenge will run for seven weeks, from June 11, 2011 until August, 6, 2011. Your workout team—you and your dog or cat—will go to the Home Buddies Weigh-In on June 11 to do your official Weigh-In at LA Fitness, 6411 County Line Road (at Bruce B. Downs Blvd). For those who can’t make it that Saturday, you will have up to a week to enter. The workout team with the largest combined percentage of weight lost wins.

Camp Bow Wow will give 30 participants around the country a Flip Video Camera to track workouts and weight loss efforts through videos that will be shared on the "Furry Fitness Challenge" website. The Furry Fitness Challenge Grand Prize is one-year of services from Home Buddies or Camp Bow Wow, a $3,000 value. According to Hatchell, local businesses are also donating prizes to be awarded to those who sign-up at LA Fitness. Home Buddies provides pet sitting and dog training in Hunter’s Green, and Camp Bow Wow is a doggie day care and overnight facility with Camps near the Tampa International Airport and in Riverview. For times and location for the Official Weigh-In on June 11, visit the Home Buddies website at www.myhomebuddies.com/ TampaNE or call (813) 935-PETS (7387). HG
