More New Years’ Resolutions for You and Your Garden
Lynn Barber, Florida-Friendly Landscaping TM agent, UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County
W
ith a new year here, it’s time to ponder your resolutions for 2024. Many involve gardening activities which can include improving your fitness and outlook, helping you lose weight and saving money. Gardening provides exercise, satisfaction, meeting neighbors and making new friends. Again this year, I asked our Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM team to give me their garden related resolutions for the new year. Mine are also included. Will would like to attempt to grow Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) in his home and learn how to preserve the vegetables he is growing through canning. Makes sense to me considering his role with community gardens. Mollie wants to establish a mist propagation system to facilitate the successful cultivation of plant cuttings from her garden. She would also like to experiment with her success rate using different propagation techniques, particularly, the 6 Lutz Magazine - JANUARY • 2024
art of grafting and air layering plants. Shaking my head, yes, as Mollie teaches water conservation which includes misting. Heather has decided it’s time to remove her fruit trees from pots and plant them in the ground. She needs to relocate two garden beds because she inadvertently placed them on top of her in-ground sprinkler heads last season, ughh. She will be installing Microirrigation in those beds. Michael plans to re-establish his seed bank with new varieties of crops, learn to propagate 10 new plants and design and install a memorial garden at his grandfather and fathers’ final resting sites. I know they will appreciate his gardening skills. My gardening resolutions include adding 1 or 2 more birdfeeders because I thoroughly enjoy seeing our great variety of feathered friends in my yard. Having pretty much mastered weeding the perennial peanut easement bed, I can
spread the 70 bags of pine bark mulch I moved around the front and backyard. I will be heading to Gainesville soon, so I must go to the UF/ IFAS Bookstore in Gainesville. Check out their website: http://ifasbooks.ifas.ufl.edu/. I am somewhat committed to putting my wooden raised garden bed together and plant it with collards, eggplant, peppers, broccoli and Brussel sprouts. I am committed to clean out my rain barrel this month. Guess what I teach? Correct, rainwater harvesting. For information about our upcoming horticultural programs, visit our website: http:// sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/ and check out our calendar of events: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/upcoming-events/. Hope you can get outside and garden! Contact Barber at labarber@ufl.edu
GFWC LUTZ-LAND O’LAKES WOMAN’S CLUB has wrapped its 44th Annual Arts & Crafts Show on a very upbeat note. As always, large crowds came out for Christmas shopping and fun despite some threatening clouds. The Carrollwood Cultural Center Orchestra played beautiful holiday favorites to an appreciative audience while others enjoyed a vast array of foods offered. Kiddies and doggies enjoyed all the excitement and a good time was had by all. Of course, best of all, the entire community will benefit from the proceeds of this very popular event, via club donations and support throughout the coming year. Special congratulations to local artist Terry Smith who was awarded “Best of Show” by the jury and presented with a special rosette ribbon and a check by club President Elayne Bassinger. M
edical Weight Loss, LLC at (813) 269-SLIM has been proving since 2007 that weight loss, whether 10 pounds or 120 pounds, can be done safely, affordably and successfully! Many different diseases, such as diabetes, auto-immune and thyroid problems, and heart disease, are linked to being overweight. Knee and hip problems are also factors in this area. We know about these things. Weight loss is not just a matter of looking good, but, is a medical program of improving your life and reducing your health risks. Feeling better, is also a great by-product of slimming down. “The program is simple, inexpensive and easy to follow. We give you a large list of foods to buy/choose from,” says Dr. Jachimek. “The program is easy, because it is food bought in the grocery store, (no special foods to order) just regular meats, fruits and vegetables on our list. This factor also makes it more affordable, because you don’t have to buy special foods, or cook separate dinners if you have a family.” Under the supervision of their medical doctors, patients can drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first month. Dr. Jachimek said that it is common to see 5-10 pounds dropped in the first week. “We have had patients that have lost 17 pounds in their first week, as well as patients that have lost over a hundred pounds on our program”, says Dr. Jachimek. Dr. Jachimek stresses that there are no price surprises at Medical Weight Loss, 269SLIM. The initial visit is $195 and weekly visits are just $55. That’s it! This is what you have been waiting for! An inexpensive, easy and successful way to lose the unwanted pounds that have made you miserable for years.

Bat Facts You May Want To Know
By Lynn Barber, UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County
A
ttracting wildlife is the seventh principle of the Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM. Bats are also important from that perspective. Poor bats, they’re so misunderstood. Unfortunately, this lack of bat facts is leading to their decline. Florida has 13 bat species that reside here year-round. Habitat destruction, harmful pesticides and nesting colony disturbances have led to the endangerment of three Florida bat species: the gray, Indiana and Mastiff. Bats naturally control pests. They consume rootworms, cutworms, corn borer moths, potato beetles and grasshoppers. They play an important role in scientific research regarding hibernation and sonar. Additionally, their excrement provides nutrient-rich fertilizer for ground-dwelling cave life.
flight. By night, bats are uniquely equipped to catch flying insects, using their wings, skin around their tails and mouths. Bats find their food sources and travel by making ultrasonic sounds that echo off solid objects. This same technique is used by dolphins.
More Bat Facts:
Bat Houses Site Selection:
• By day, bats take shelter in foliage, under tree bark, in caves, mines, buildings and rock crevices. Many assemble in nursery colonies in the spring, leaving in July and August to begin their trek to hibernation sites. Up to 300 bats per square foot can cluster to hibernate. If hibernation is interrupted too many times, a bat may not be able to survive the winter due to the decrease in fat reserves.
Bat houses keep bats warm, dry and safe while sleeping during the day. Bats prefer temperatures between 80 and 100 degrees. If the temperature is not comfortable, bats will not inhabit the house. If no bats inhabit the bat house after three or more years, you should either change the exterior color of the bat house or its location. Don't move the house near bright lights or an area with much human activity. You can install a bat house any time of year, but bats generally take up residency in
• Bats are the only mammals capable of true
• Most Eastern bat species produce one bat baby per year, while other species produce two to four. Female colony bats create a nursery prior to giving birth. When the mothers all crowd together, the nursery temperature is higher than 100 degrees. Baby bats are furless and need a warm and humid place to survive. Colony-roosting bats have less colorful and thinner fur than solitary or foliage-roosting bats. Baby bats, like other mammals, feed on milk until they’re able to secure food on their own.
early spring. If you install your bat house in the winter, it will be available when bats are seeking a new home. Bats are more attracted to houses mounted on the sides of buildings or poles than if tree-mounted because building-mounted bat houses provide more sun and less predator perch sites. Predators include owls, hawks and falcons. Select the roost site near food and fresh water sources and a location where the sight or odor of the guano (excrement) won't be an issue. Shovel guano periodically and use as landscape soil amendment. Locate the bat house at last 20 feet from potential predator perch sites and at least 12 feet off the ground. Provide a wildlife bat habitat (bat-i-tat) in your backyard which will give you and your family hours of educational entertainment and significantly fewer insects. Bats … they’re not limited to our Halloween imaginations and experiences. The University of Florida has several bat houses on campus in Gainesville. It is quite an experience to see their massive exit.
