Fallen Hero 5K | 10K a Day of Remembrance and Gratitude
Each September the Tampa VAN (Veteran Approved Network) holds its annual Fallen Hero 5K | 10K event the week of that somber anniversary to honor all fallen heroes and to pay tribute to those still in service. Runners choose this event to dedicate their efforts to those who have died for us and those who continue to put their lives on the line in service to our country and community. This year the presentation of colors included the Alonso High School Color Guard and a 38foot tall American Flag from Big Blue Line Flag. Ms. Kat Casperson sang the National Anthem followed by special guests Jay Collins (for Florida Senate) and MAJ GEN (ret) James S. “Hammer” Hartsell, Executive Director of Florida Veterans’ Affairs. Both men took a moment to recognize the day and its purpose before wishing the runners ‘Godspeed’. At race start, more than 300 runners took to the trail that was lined with Remembrance Signs of fallen heroes. To honor fallen heroes, these remembrance signs are placed along the race route reminding runners that our fallen heroes may be gone
but not forgotten. All proceeds from the sponsoring of Remembrance Signs and all donations to the race were given to Gold Star Mother, Kelly Kowall and her organization, My Warrior’s Place in Ruskin, Florida. As the first runners began to cross the finish line the event’s focus moved to the children where a Fallen Hero 100-yard Kids Dash allowed the smallest patriots to run and earn a race medal alongside their parents and guardians. Adults and children alike enjoyed the Veterans’ Village where more than 20 Vetted for Vets business members and non-profit organizations of the VAN (Veteran Approved Network) gathered to give out free merchandise, B12 Shots, Massages, and other goods. Food tickets were provided to the runners to enjoy food from Sarge’s BBQ and treats from Kona Ice. There will certainly be a Fallen Hero 5K | 10K event next September too. Cat’s Cradle Sanctuary
A
one of kind sanctuary for senior cats! After circumstances have displaced them from their homes, these cats can find love and care at Cats Cradle to live out the rest of their lives in peace. In their backyard, owners Terry and Bruce Jenkins have created the ideal space for aging cats with all kinds of areas and activities for the variety of needs that come with having lots of different

animals, especially cats! All of this became possible for Terry and Bruce to rescue senior cats when as their children grew up and moved away, they found they had plenty of land that could be turned into something with a larger purpose. The land was available to them as before moving to Lutz 33 years ago, their home was originally a farmhouse. The wide-open land behind the house
is where they have been able to turn Cats Cradle into what it is today. Starting from 2005, Terry and Bruce have been working to grow their business and can now regularly take as many as 30 cats at a time. Built in the center of the sanctuary there is the main spot the cats love to be, Catopia! This is where they all gather every feeding time to enjoy their feast. As cats tend to have specific

preferences and feeding needs, elderly cats especially, the owners are always there to carefully watch over them and ensure each cat gets enough to eat. Those staying here who prefer a little more privacy or need specific food can enjoy going in and out rooms designed to look like a real miniature town, complete with a hotel, bank, sheriff station, and a senior center! You will also notice the bridges overhead where the cats run, connecting to the rest of the property where many unique areas are such as Lake Park, Furball Castle, or Shanty Town! Catopia also features an open stage that is ideal for the community-run livestream events that are offered at Cats Cradle. These shows happen once a week and cover a wide variety of topics. This ranges from livestreams of discussing your business ventures and doing products demonstrations, to exciting karaoke shows and cooking presentations. The curious cats love to be around for these streams and can be seen interacting with the guests. However, if you are unable to catch a weekly stream, the live catcams set up around the property are catching cat activity 24-hours a day. This can be accessed by becoming a Guardian Angel for Cats Cradle. The Guardian Angels are monthly donators that contribute to keeping Cats Cradle up and running. It is a great way to support this cause if you are unable to adopt a senior in need. As a Guardian Angel contributor, you will choose cat you would like to sponsor and be provided with a personalized brick paver to be installed in the Zen Garden “Recognition Path”. Individuals in the area are welcome to sign up online through www.cats-cradle.org. Adopting senior animals from shelters is extremely important, as they are more likely to be put down due to age. Aging pets are often abandoned at veterinary offices or left by themselves on the streets and in shelters. Cat’s Cradle is a place that can rescue some of these animals and give them a loving home, but it happens far too often for them to be able to accept every case. Therefore, they only accept new arrivals from these shelters and vet offices, rather than from private parties. Each pet has unique life experiences and needs that might not always make them a good match for living in the sanctuary. To acclimate into a new environment can be stressful, so the owners do everything they can to make the process fit the needs of each case. Since there are many unable to be taken in, the “Rescue Angel” program that Cat’s Cradle Foundation has partnered with shelters throughout Florida to create is an effort to help save these cats by matching them with individuals who can give them proper care. Visitors are welcome one day a month for a donation of $20! Other donations such as food and litter are always welcome as well.
