LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Neighbors and friends, The other day one of our daughters commented on how excited she was about Christmas and how this time of year made her feel so happy inside. She said she wanted to start her Santa list. She ended her comments with a squeal of giddiness. I was excited too from just listening to her and a thought came to mind. I told her that was a wonderful way to feel and would she like for other people to feel that way as well? (head nods) “Well maybe along with that “I want” list you will make for yourself, you could make another list of ideas of how you can help make other people feel just like you are feeling right now.” (the thinking look) “Maybe make a scarf for a friend, bake some goodies for a neighbor, donate one of your warm blankets to a shelter, spend a little of your money on a toy for another child, spend some time just listening to an elderly person’s stories and asking for more.” The excited, happy feeling grew even more and off she went to make her 2 lists. No matter what special holiday you celebrate this time of year, there are many ideas that a child or anyone can do to give someone else wonderful, happy feelings. What will be on your list?

TIP Winter Golf:

For those of us lucky enough to be in Florida, winter golf takes on a different meaning than up north. I learned alot about winter golf my 3 years in North Carolina, and I am going to share with you a thought or two to make “cold weather” golf more enjoyable. My general rule during the colder months is to take 1 extra club for all of your full shots. 2 reasons for this, first of all there is a good chance you are wearing extra clothes, which constricts the turn

focus on the specific needs and goals of our clients. Our individual and group training services include: strength and cardiovascular training, senior fit, sports specific conditioning, Zumba, yoga, pilates, kickboxing and women on weights. Our trainers also offer body fat analyses, functional fitness assessments, and complimentary fitness evaluations and orientations to all of our athletic members. Now is the time to come and experience the excitement and benefits that the club has to offer. For your private tour and to preview the club membership experience contact our Membership Director, Miranda Hilton (813-632-1672). If you would like to know more about the specific amenities and programs available to athletic members, please contact me so I can share additional information with you. of the golf swing. The second reason is, the temperature of the golf ball. A golf ball at 50 degrees will travel 8 - 10 percent shorter distance than a golf ball at 80 degrees. I don’t recommend microwaving golf balls, but the colder temperatures surely effect the distance of the ball. ne lucky couple walked away with a bargain week of upscale solitude on Little Gasparilla Island from The Rotary Club of New Tampa’s 5th Annual Casino Night held on Oct. 22 at The Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. The couple is paying for their vacation with proceeds from the 50/50 cash drawing they also won. The annual signature event raised more than $10,000 which the Rotary Club of New Tampa donates to area schools and charities.

The high-flying night offered casino games with play money, cash drawings, fabulous silent and live auction items, and entertainment by Jonathan Cortez. Several of the 150 attendees went home with spectacular bargains such as tickets to Disney and four nights at Springhill Suites donated by Springhill Suites of New Tampa; custom art by local artist John Henne; and a week in a luxurious New Smyrna Beach condo. Bidding was hot for the Chef’s Dinner for Six as Auctioneer Jim Henning yelled “sold” for $850 when chefs Peter Gambacorta and Gary Gunter agreed to increase the guest count to eight.

ORTHODONTIST PIONEERS NEW 3-D TECHNOLOGY

D

r. Farina is revolutionizing the face of orthodontic care in Tampa Bay by introducing the area’s first i-cat® 3-D imaging technology. This high-tech scanning equipment dramatically advances the accuracy and predictability of patient care, while making many discomforts of traditional treatment—such as those distasteful plaster molds or cumbersome xrays—a thing of the past. In less than 10 seconds, one digital scan captures a three-dimensional view of a patient’s facial anatomy, including teeth and bone tissue, joints,

Palms Magazine

sinuses, airway passages and jaw structure. Not only does the technology allow for pinpoint diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plans, it does so with significantly less radiation than the full series of x-ray exams traditionally required. “There is no guesswork with this technology,” explains Dr. Farina of Farina Orthodontics. “I can create treatment plans that are far more predictable and precise. I can see impacted teeth and bone depth before I begin moving teeth. And, I can show patients anticipated results on screen.”

Taking 30 seconds to render, each digital scan can be used to build exacting treatment plans and to show superimposed before-and-after outcomes. The scans can be shared with other specialists electronically to coordinate care. For example, a 12 year old came into Dr. Farina’s office with chronic allergies. The scan revealed polyps in the boy’s sinuses. Dr. Farina was able to send the 3-D scan to the boy’s physician to aid in relieving his condition. While the technology is sure to make orthodontic patients smile, the uses of 3-D imaging extend far beyond caring for smiles. Dr. Mark S. Farina, D.M.D. has been a practicing orthodontist in the Tampa Bay area for the past 16 years, treating more than 9,000 smiles. He is a certified Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics and was recently voted by his peers as one of the Bay area’s top ten orthodontists. www.farinasmiles.com. v

despite it being an unplanned move, it will surely be a time consuming process with a lot of trial and error attached to it. Instead, take a look at the art pieces and decor items you have and the list of items you intend to purchase and sketch out a plan for outdoor Christmas decor. This also ensures that you don’t get carried away during the process of decorating the yard or the garden.

Test functionality of the lights before putting them to use

This is, yet again, a common blunder today. Most of them end up stringing the lights in various shapes and accentuating their house with lights too and then realize that the lights are not working. What a waste of time it can prove to be! It is recommended that you test the lights as soon as you bring them out before you get on with outdoor Christmas decor.

Hire professionals if needed

You know better how feasible your outdoor Christmas idea is! Do not try to save on all the money by trying to do all the decoration yourself in spite of knowing it is tough. Go ahead, seek out the professionals who will simplify your job. Yes, this would mean a slight overhead in terms of expenses but would also mean a job well done.

It is important to have a balanced life.

Inflatables to be minimized

Choosing inflatable toys for outdoor Christmas decor is an “in-thing” in modern times. However, certain people go overboard and fill their yard with inflatables. While they are definitely visually appealing to the children, they are more suitable for a children’s party rather than a Christmas celebration.

McBath Law Firm, P.A. 2412 Cypress Glen Drive Ste. 101, Wesley Chapel, FL 33544

In addition to these points, also consider the usage of vintage Christmas lights that have been brightening up the Christmas celebrations for ages. Page 18

The Best Value in Insurance Today

W

hat is the best value in insurance today? It is the personal umbrella policy. This insurance policy provides personal liability coverage above and beyond

Palms Magazine

You might think you don’t need a Personal Umbrella Policy because you don’t see yourself as being wealthy. When you sit down and think you have a home, auto, and retirement plans, savings, etc., it all adds up. You may realize that if you don’t have enough liability coverage, one judgment could possibly put all of these assets at risk.

Some people tell us they don’t think they need a Personal Umbrella Policy because their auto policy covers liability. That’s right, your auto policy does have liability coverage; however there are limits. The Personal Umbrella what you already have on your Policy coverage limits basically other policies: auto, homeowners, starts where the auto leaves off. motorcycle, boat, etc. It sits on They actually complement each top of and provides significant other. extra coverage beyond what those policies afford you.

A personal umbrella policy also defends you and pays your legal bills when any covered lawsuit occurs. It covers lawsuits that may not be covered by your other insurance (for example, an allegation of slander). So, it covers many gaps in your other insurance coverages. And its price is very reasonable. You can get this coverage in million dollar increments. A $1 million policy is amazingly inexpensive – just a few hundred dollars. Another benefit -- you are covered worldwide. You don’t have to be a millionaire to be sued like one. So, if you are worried about losing your home, your savings, your future income, or your toys; or if you have young drivers in the home, you can protect yourself with the personal umbrella policy. -Gary Gunter of Gunter & Gunter Insurance, 973-8680.

Metropolitan Ministries

W

hen most people think of Metropolitan Ministries, tents, food, turkeys and toys come to mind. While those are a big part of what the Ministries does for the holidays, none of it could be possible without the support of the Tampa Bay community. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, The Ministries constructs a 32,000 square foot red and white tent that resembles Santa’s Village. Families receive Boxes of Hope (food items for a complete holiday meal, including a turkey) and Bags of Joy (toys and stocking stuffers for children). But the Holiday Center offers families much more than food and toys. Page 26

Impact, changed lives, transformation and hope are holiday miracles that seem to unfold right before ones eyes. Through the Ministries Compassion + Action community outreach initiative geared toward serving more families in more communities, the Ministries has partnered with organization across the bay area to serve families in need. The tents known as Holiday Centers, now total 9 locations in three counties-Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco, serving as a place for volunteers, donors and those receiving services to come in contact with each other.

27 sites meal site partner locations across Tampa Bay. Metropolitan Ministries currently houses 40 families with 90 children.

The Ministries is encouraging the community to collect Boxes of Hope and Bags of Joy, by challenging your friends, coworkers, school and faith groups to collect 20, 50, or 100 boxes and bags for the families the Ministries will serve this year. You won’t be able to serve all 30,000 families in need…but each community member can make a difference in a life by feeding ONE family or providing ONE toy to a child in need.

Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School meets the educational needs of homeless and atrisk students in the Tampa Bay Area by providing one-on-one and small classroom settings. Its Youth Programs provide after-school support and activities for homeless teens.

The Ministries prides itself on helping families by alleviating suffering, promoting dignity and instilling self-sufficiency. Metropolitan Ministries’ residential Uplift U program provides transitional housing to families and single women while providing counseling services, physical and mental health care, alcohol and drug counseling, employment services and money management training to help them on the path toward self-sufficiency. The Metropolitan Ministries’ Sanctuary at Waters Avenue, a group of 12 Sulfur Springs town homes, provides affordable housing to Uplift U graduates while pairing them with family mentors to help residents achieve full self-sufficiency.

Join the Ministries this holiday season and yearround in being someone’s angel. For more information, please contact: Bob Kozyra at 813.273.8521

Metropolitan Ministries offers much more than holiday assistance. Since it’s inception in 1972, the Ministries has grown from a single room soup kitchen to one of America’s most innovative caregivers. More than half a million families have been aided by its Outreach and Prevention Services. The Ministries has also prepared over 23 million hot meals and provided over 350,000 safe haven shelter nights to the area’s homeless. More than 1,700 meals are served each day at more than December 2010

Community

e wake up every morning to the banging of the dump trucks rear gates, the beeping of the bulldozers backing up, the jack hammers vibrating and the roaring cranes and diggers. We drive through the dusty dirt, take another route when the usual road is closed and go over bumps and dips. Bang, beep, roar, so early in the morning! Dirty cars, a minute more of time taken, rough ride! Ahhhh! I absolutely LOVE and welcome it!!! I am grateful for the noise and inconvenience because it means that there is growth and progress. It’s everywhere around us and we are right in the middle of it all. How lucky can we get? Growth and progress mean better roads, new businesses, more jobs, home values rising, new homes being built again, existing homes selling, more convenience and lots of new opportunities for all. Soon the roads will be completed and it will be quite a beautiful sight to see (if roads can be beautiful :) ). So, nod and smile at the hard working construction people, who work early, late, weekends, in the heat and cold to get the job done as quickly and safely as possible and know that you live in the BEST community in the whole USA. At least I think so! - Cindi Matter
