Editor’s Letter:
T
his year has been a much better winter. At this time last year we were still freezing. It reached the 80’s in February and is hopefully staying that way now that we are in March. Some things to look for in this month’s newsletter is the Best Spring Yard Contest, Wiregrass Ranch plans and of course the cover photo contest. The Best Spring Yard contest , will be for 2 months with the winner announced in May. Next month we are starting a “High School Senior to Watch” contest. It will be for people to send in their nominees for the most involved, caring and dedicated upcoming school year Senior. Many people are sending in their photos, news, announcements, stories, sports and more and we
really appreciate that. They are so much fun to share. Continue to send in your information and we will print as much as will fit. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please let us know. This newsletter is for all residents and we want you to be involved. Happy Spring....soon! :)

The
Beauty
Y
ears ago, when my family and I visited our friends here in Seven Oaks, we were mesmerized by the aesthetic beauty of the community. As we looked around we were impressed by the pristine grounds, beautiful clubhouse facility and beautiful homes. A couple of years later, when we decided to relocate to Tampa, we placed Seven Oaks at the top of a very short list of places to live. We were fortunate to find a home in the subdivision we liked and to this day I still find myself stealing moments to take in the visual beauty of one of the premiere communities in Tampa. Over the years I have heard similar stories from many residents of this community. Over time, I have also come to appreciate what I now consider the true beauty of Seven Oaks, the

of Seven Oaks‌
residents of the community. Of course, as the case in all communities, there are some residents who could be more considerate to others, (i.e. picking up after their dog, observing the speed limit, etc.) but for the most part, the majority of residents in Seven Oaks are good neighbors who make this community a nice place to live. Clearly, one of the biggest challenges over the years has been getting people consistently involved in the community and communicating information to the masses. Efforts are being made to improve communication and get more residents involved in the community. Here are a few simple ways you can help on your end; visit the community website (www.mysevenoaks.com) and subscribe to receive updates, attend community meetings, work

with your neighborhood representative to be sure your email address is on the distribution list for pertinent updates, etc. In the coming months we will face key issues and challenges which will effect all Seven Oaks residents. Your community leaders will keep you abreast of these events via this newsletter and the aforementioned means of communication. Please take the time to review these communications and respond accordingly. Wishing you and yours ALL THE BEST‌ Respectfully yours, Michael A. Davis, Sr.

Porter family plans mega-development for Wiregrass Ranch
T
he new face of Wiregrass Ranch prefers a ball cap over a cowboy hat and transparency over secrecy.
“I think people should know what’s going on out here,” said J.D. Porter of the Porter ranching family, owners of the 5,000-acre Wiregrass Ranch, now one of the largest regional developments on Florida’s west coast. At 31, James Don Porter is the junior member of the family that hopes to someday turn more of the cow pastures it has owned since World War II into a megamix. Already in the works is the hospital and community college and in talks/meetings about a 300,000-squarefoot recreational attraction that includes a hockey rink, a town center “Downtown Wesley Chapel” of government offices, restaurants and shops, hotels and homes. The site as we all know is already home to the Shops at Wiregrass, a “lifestyle center” that includes 100 mall quality stores. His father, Don, and uncles Tom and Bill, are still involved in decision making, but J.D. now holds the title of manager of the family ranch and spends the majority of his time meeting with developers and regulatory
officials. When Wiregrass’ land use attorneys show up at county meetings, J.D. shows up with them. In February he met with “Business Leaders” BNI group at Cory Lake Isles to discuss future plans. J.D. said, “If you want to see things get done faster, business owners need to be involved and attend the meetings. Don’t just complain that things aren’t happening; make it happen.” “He really has picked all this up very quickly,” said William Merrill, the family’s land use attorney. “He’s a very fast learner and is doing a very good job for the ranch. He sees this as really becoming a destination location.” Historically, his elders have remained tight-lipped about their plans for the property, with publicity leaking out through county records, but Porter, who is part of the social media generation, has persuaded them to rethink that position. He now handles public relations. To learn more about our growing area go to http://www. thewiregrassranch.com v

resident council
Are you
hearing
from your Resident Council? By David Lockwood, Chairman Resident Council
E
ach neighborhood is supposed to have a representative who keeps the residents of that neighborhood informed of meetings and other happenings through e-mails. Unfortunately we have few neighborhoods that don’t have representatives. Also many folks have moved in or out or just changed e-mail addresses and the neighborhood rep has not received the information. If you are getting regular e-mails from your neighborhood, great. If not, please e-mail me and let me know. (please include address and subdivision) I will make sure your rep gets your updated information so that you can be included. If your neighborhood is one without a rep, I will get you on a list to keep you informed until we get someone from your neighborhood to represent you. Also consider joining us. Last month we met with Theresa Flores, our clubhouse manager. She told us of proposed changes to the clubhouse in the works, both physical and in the programs they organize. The RC and the residents in attendance were able to give feedback and help influence the direction they would take. We began planning how to sponsor more clubs and organizations in Seven Oaks. We are working on making sure resident groups get first priority for the clubhouse and sports fields. Already in the works are sports opportunities for both adults and kids. We want to start more. Come let us know what kind of group you
would like to be part of. I want to hear from anyone who has interest in leading a group. We will make it easy for you. If you get this before March 1, Please join us to meet with Pasco County Commissioner, Pat Mulieri, Jim Widman, Engineering Director and Carol Clarke, Executive Planner. Pat should have news on some major development projects in the works for our part of Pasco County. Jim will take us through the road construction plans for our area and Carol will update us on the strategy and growth plans for the county. In April, we plan to have our Sheriff to discuss safety and security concerns in our area. In future month’s we will be inviting other key leaders in our community. Come learn about where our community is going and help keep it moving in the right direction. We hope to see many of you at Resident Council meetings in the coming months. Sincerely,
Seven Oaks Resident Council
Dave Lockwood The Resident Council meets at the Clubhouse, usually on the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm.

his story came from a parent who recently called us: “My daughter is in the third grade and is really struggling with math. She gets very nervous when the teacher announces, ‘It is time to take out your mathematics textbooks.’ At home, she gets very frustrated when completing her math homework. She also gets very overwhelmed when memorizing her basic math facts and cannot understand word problems. What can we do to help?” Does this sound familiar? Math is a troublesome subject for many students and often causes anxiety and avoidance. This cycle can become a self-fulfilling negative prophesy. Sometimes, kids can hide their struggles, only to have them surface with the arrival of an interim progress report or grading period report card. Who knew? If you’re not as sure your child may have a problem as the mom in the example above, there are some tell tale signs you should be aware of: 1. Homework takes much longer than it should. If your 4th grader spends more than 30 minutes on his math homework – there’s a good chance he’s having difficulties with the problems. 2. If your daughter, not normally prone to procrastination, goes into homework delay mode, it may not necessarily mean that she’s just feeling lazy. 3. If you persistently detect any level of despondence during homework
times, there’s a good chance that not only is she struggling, but she’s feeling really bad about it.
What should you do? 1. Encourage your child to get extra help from the teacher or other inschool support services (homework clubs, before and after school help, etc.) 2. Take advantage of parent-teacher conferences. Many teachers will also meet with outside of the prescribed conference period. 3. Explore professional tutoring options.
Whatever the approach you take, make sure you take quick action. Kids who struggle can fall behind quickly, and playing catch-up can be frustrating and difficult. The KnowledgePoints Basic Math Program helps students learn basic math skills in three areas of instruction: basic math facts, computation, and concepts and applications. The KnowledgePoints Math Program encourages students to communicate in mathematical terms in all areas of instruction. Mastering these skills provides students with the math foundation they need for advancement to higher level math classes. Every Girl Scout Cookie Has A Mission
A
s part of the 2011 Girl Scout Cookie Program, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida (GSWCF) offers the community the opportunity to donate to U.S. military troops serving overseas through its Cookies from Home program. Cookies from Home is a unique way for Girl Scouts to give back to their communities: donations of cookies through the program will be sent directly to our military troops serving in combat zones overseas through a partnership with Support Our Troops. “Life is good when you get Girl Scout Cookies,” said Steve Carney, reporter/ anchor with 970 WFLA and served in Afghanistan in the U.S. Navy.
March 2011
In addition to enjoying the cookies themselves, military troops also use them to build relationships with local children. “Generally, we have been [giving] the cookies and sweets to the children that we meet out on mission,” wrote a soldier serving with the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Tikrit, Iraq. “…thank you for allowing my team to give out your cookies to the needy families in Iraq. Without your help, my job would be considerably harder,” wrote a soldier serving on a reconstruction liaison team in Baghdad. In 2010, 45,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies were donated to U.S. military troops through the Cookies from Home program. Donations to the Cookies from Home Program may be made in person through a Girl Scout, booth sales or online at www.gswcf.org at anytime during the Girl Scout Cookie Program, through March 20. v

Expert answers to your health & wellness questions By Nicole Johnson Q: I have a simple question for you—how many calories does one need to eat to lose weight? That does sound like a simple question, and I could give you a simple answer, but it might not be all that accurate. It would be easy to say that the average female should take in about 1200-1500 calories to lose weight, and maybe 1800-2100 for males, but that doesn’t mean that these numbers will necessarily work for you! The ability to lose weight depends on a number of variables, including your resting metabolic rate, your activity level (both general daily activities and exercise), and even the calories you burn while digesting food. These all factor into the expenditure side of the energy balance equation, which then helps to determine the intake side as well. If you want the best and most accurate calorie estimate, you need to take a personal inventory. Talk to a trainer about getting your resting metabolic rate tested, and then have him/ her determine how many calories you expend each day. This will go a long way to establishing a recommended calorie level for weight loss. Good luck! Q: I’m smack-dab in the middle of menopause and, as expected, I seem to be gaining weight. However, the weight seems to be finding its way to my mid-section,
which is odd for me personally. Any logical explanation? You might not want to hear this, but yes, there is a logical explanation. As you’re probably aware, many women seem prone to gaining weight in their hip and butt areas. Part of the reason that weight accumulates in these areas is because of the effect that estrogen has on the body. However, as you reach your menopausal years, your estrogen levels drop. As a result, the ratio of estrogen to testosterone drops as well, and, low and behold, you end up storing that extra weight where men tend to gain their weight—specifically the mid-section. I’m sure you’re not all that thrilled to hear this, but it’s just a fact of life. Naturally, most women want to know what they can do about it, but aside from preventing weight gain in the first place (which can be difficult), there isn’t much you can do. Just be diligent with your diet and exercise as you approach menopause, and try to accept the age-related changes that all of our bodies go through. Q: Can I get your thoughts on all of the nutrition and fitness information that you find in the popular magazines? What do you think of Fitness, Runner’s World, Men’s Health, and the like?
That’s a great question, especially since many people get all of their health and wellness information from these sources, and others. I’ve written for several different magazines, and I’m on the advisory board for one publication, and I can say that the content is probably better than it’s ever been. Years ago, most of the articles were full of myths, inaccuracies, and marketing hype. And don’t get me wrong, you can still find this in certain articles in some of the most popular magazines. That said, many publications now hire editors that have solid credentials in nutrition, fitness, or disease prevention and management, and they have researchers on staff as well. Plus, many editors want to see the sources that their writers use before they approve an article. Historically, the focus was always on selling magazines, and that hasn’t really changed, but the magazines themselves have come to realize that well-researched, accurate content does just that. If you’re ever confused by something you read in a magazine, just ask a local expert (trainer, dietitian, or health professional) to give you their honest feedback. You can also post it in the community section of Anytimehealth.com! About the author: Nicole Johnson is the club manager at Anytime Fitness in Wesley Chapel. To submit a question for future articles, please contact the author at tampafl2@anytimefitness.com.

Many Parents Don’t Know About the Dangers of Whooping Cough The success of vaccine efforts has controlled many diseases in the US, but one vaccine-preventable disease that is currently on the rise is pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough.” To protect infants and children, it is important to have them immunized on time against whooping cough. Current 7th graders have been vaccinated with TDAP, which covers Pertussis. However, many current 8th graders (and older teens) have not been immunized against Pertussis, since prior to this school year, it was not recommended for 7th grade entry. For more information about pertussis vaccination, parents should consult their pediatrician or visit. Parents may also obtain a “Pertussis Screening Form” from the JLMS
clinic to bring to their child’s health care provider. Additionally, there is a brochure available in English and Spanish which explains why parents should be vaccinated against Pertussis as well.
Please save your Boxtops & Campbells UPC’s In the past, JLMS has purchased books and classroom equipment with funds from Boxtops and Campbells. You can send them by your child or drop them off at the front office. Thank you for your support.
