LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER Greeting Neighbors and Friends,
A
hhh, isn’t it beautiful outside? A hint of cool air in the mornings and evening. Sure, it’s hotter than heck by 10am, but still it’s a wonderful tease. My neighbor already had all her fall decorations out by September 10th, making the house smell wonderful and feel cozy. I believe she lights her fire too (with the air turned way down). :) She REALLY likes the holidays, so she starts very early. For the November issue we would love some of your favorite holiday recipes, photos of Thanksgivings past and all photos and announcements you had during October. We so very much enjoy all the pictures coming in. For those who really want to know, October 16th is Sweetest Day and October 24th is Mother-in-Law Day. Aren’t those one in the same? :) Enjoy the weather, put up your fall decorations and buckle up for a fun filled holiday season. It’s coming fast!

CDD Update by Susan Jurik
H
ello Fellow Residents! I would like to make a few comments about our community and communities in general. We have a beautiful community in Seven Oaks, but I’m not sure that all residents feel a sense of community here. I want to encourage you to take time to seek out and get to know your neighbors. Everyone benefits from having connections to others living near them, and it is difficult for someone to display undesirable behavior around others who have taken the time to know and care for them and/or their families. There are many ways to get to know your neighbors, from chatting with them during a neighborhood walk to volunteering to serve on a Seven Oaks committee. I plan to take my own advice and be more purposeful about getting to know others in my community. I hope you do too! Speaking of Seven Oaks committees, I am making a plea on behalf of the Residents Council to join them! There are several communities that do not have a representative on the committee. This means that those communities do not have a voice at the meetings, do not receive meeting minutes and updates, and are not necessarily included in considerations of actions at those meetings. The Resident’s Council is also important because they bring the ideas and concerns of the residents’ to the CDD Board for consideration and possible action. The CDD Board has tried to make the dissemination of information as timely and easy to find as possible. You can find the minutes on the website (www. MySevenOaks.com) and we are going to try to provide highlights in our monthly articles. However, the BEST way to get your CDD news is to attend a meeting! I am so happy when we have residents who come and get involved in our meetings. It helps me to make informed decisions when I know what other residents are thinking so please, come join us! I have a “pet” peeve. There are dog owners in Seven Oaks that regularly leave
SEVEN OAKS NEWS
their pet’s messes in other people’s yards or in common areas. If you keep “doggy doo bags” or empty grocery bags by your pet’s leash, all you have to do is grab a bag or two when you grab the leash. It only takes a few moments to bend over and pick up your dog’s mess. I don’t know of ANYONE who is OK with having messes left in their yard, and if you are not OK with it, please be thoughtful of your neighbors. We have children who play outside in their bare feet and who tumble and run throughout the neighborhood. Please don’t leave pet messes for them to slip on or slide into. Just a quick reminder, we have one CDD board seat up for re-election in November. Two seats were actually available, but Andy Denbo is running unopposed for seat one, so he is automatically a board member come elections. Congratulations, Andy! Please show your support for your favorite candidate for the remaining seat by voting!
approved the immediate removal of one tree that was dead and hanging over the boardwalk due to potential liability if the tree should fall and injure someone. The board requested proposals for the removal of the remaining ten infected trees and are looking at different options for removing the trees without damage to the boardwalk. At the request of a resident, the board approved extending the sidewalk outside the clubhouse all the way to the basketball courts. At the request of a board member, the board approved fire ant treatment of the common area in Fairgate, that is sometimes used as a gathering/play area by residents.
Now, for a few highlights from our September CDD meeting: The board approved the resurfacing of the basketball half-courts at Amberside and Brookforest for a cost of $5,600.00. The board was informed of a canker disease infecting 11 trees near the wood boardwalk near 56. Scott Brizendine October 2010
The CDD Board meets at The Clubhouse on the second Wednesday of each month from 6:30pm-10:30pm All residents are welcome. Page 5

SEVEN OAKS NEWS
Property Owners association by Dick Fink
Some Things I Think I Think I think some things are inevitable, you know like death and taxes. That no matter what you do or say, someone is going to do something to, “Screw it up!” I’ve written a number of times about having pride in our neighborhoods and in Seven Oaks. This is our (collectively all of us who live here) community and we should care about how it looks…both our own yards, etc. and the common areas. I really believe that the vast majority of our residents do take pride in their homes and yards. I’m not so sure that this extends to the common areas, the roads and play grounds and parks in Seven Oaks. I say this because while on a walk the other evening, I noticed the remnants of a gourmet meal purchased at the “Golden Arches” that was deposited at various places along Ancient Oaks Blvd. Now while I will admit to being less than happy with my own “Happy Meal”, from time to time, I never felt the urge to redecorate the streets in Seven Oaks with the leftovers from a super sized Big Mac Attack!
Hopefully it was someone who had not yet reached adulthood. I feel confident that whoever did this did not have a brain that was fully developed. And if it was an adult, please seek professional help immediately! Bottom line; if you throw trash out of your car the STUPID light should immediately go on! Please respect the common property and equipment at the parks and play grounds. They are here for the use and enjoyment of all our residents. They are also paid for by all our residents. So if something is broken or vandalized, guess who ultimately pays to fix, or replace it….We all do! I think that some of the folks that are driving through our neighborhoods are auditioning for NASCAR. I happen to like motor sports but not in our subdivisions! There are lots of youngsters in our neighborhoods and they can’t be counted on to be careful so we need to watch our speed through Seven Oaks. Please slow down!
I think we’re doing a better job with the forced mows on some of the foreclosed and abandoned homes in the area. Just to make sure that we’re all on the same page concerning the forced mows, here’s our approach. We try to mow at least once a month during the growing season. We’re trying to keep the grass and weeds from taking over. We do not have the resources and money to keep the lawns mowed every week. We’ll continue to try to improve our response to this ongoing problem. If you’re living next to a property that has gotten out of hand, please let us know by using the Seven Oaks web site. Just some things, I think I think… Dick Fink Vice President SOPOA SOPOA meets at The Clubhouse on the 4th Tuesday each month at 6pm. All residents welcome.

resident council by Holly Hill Calling all Seven Oaks’ Residents-
VOTE VOTE VOTE! By Holly Hill, Chairman Seven Oaks Resident Council As we approach a bustling November 2, 2010 Election Day, the news’ channels are busting with information about candidates and important Congressional and State level seats up for election. I sometimes find it difficult to focus on one or two races at a time due to the issue and information overload! When I was in college and fresh out in the American work force, these mid-term elections were often unnoticed and forgotten. Now, the world is different for me with a family, mortgage and taxes… the complete all-inclusive American family package deal many of us have picked up along the way. I reflect on how proud we should be of our unique and wonderful democracy with the most precious gift to its citizens, the right to vote. As I continue to keep my eye on the larger races, I realize more than ever that the local, less publicized races also make a huge impact on our lives and need special attention too. The Resident Council is hosting a Candidate’s Night for those local contenders to introduce themselves to our community and speak on issues that matter most to us. This event will be held on October 5, 2010 at 7pm in the Seven Oaks Clubhouse Gathering Room. Please join us and meet your local candidates! A very important election is in our hands as residents of Seven Oaks. It is our responsibility to our families and neighbors to stay informed of community issues and vote for the best representative for our own Community Development District leaders, aka the Seven Oak’s CDD Board. There is one seat open for election on November 2, 2010. It is this seat that I would ask that you take a few SEVEN OAKS NEWS
moments and consider the right choice to help lead our community and make decisions that represent Seven Oaks as a whole. One candidate is in my opinion without a doubt the most qualified and exceptional choice for the open CDD seat. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my good friend, Michael Davis or Mike to the rest of us. I first met Michael in September 2009 when he joined the Resident Council as representative for Shoregrass. I was the representative for Knollpoint and had a great opportunity to get to know this calm, positive and highly intelligent gentleman. When Michael speaks, people stop talking and listen. This is due to his overwhelming ability to draw respect from his peers through his courtesy, insightful suggestions, and open-mindedness. He never fails to treat others with respect and kindness. He always listens completely to an opposition’s comments before offering his own thoughts. He never makes others feel inadequate or uninformed when they offer a different opinion than his own, rather he always ensures he fully understands their views and makes them feel respected for their opinions. He offers suggestions for improvement in a way that enlightens the issue at hand and causes you to view challenges in a fresh point of view. He uses a masterful positive approach that makes the toughest argument become easier to break down and allows everyone to peacefully find middle ground.
to volunteer and accept any responsibility which would help improve Seven Oaks. He has worked tirelessly on many projects for the Resident Council including the demanding Contract Review Committee where we work with the CDD and their auxiliary support to make improvements to Seven Oaks that matter the most to you and your families. Somehow, Michael still finds the time to serve on the Advisory Board of the Seven Oaks Crime Watch Patrol and he also serves as Secretary of the Residents Council. I was not surprised to discover his resume is packed with over 22 years of key managerial positions within the Time Warner Corporation with specialized experience in government/community relations, internal communication, customer service and investor relations. This experience and dedication is reflected in every project he has managed within the Resident Council and Seven Oaks Crime Watch Patrol. One more thing to note about this great candidate is his modesty. He is confident and self reliant, but when I thank him profusely after tackling yet another challenging and time consuming project for the Resident Council, one that I could not conquer without his help, he simply says, “No problem, I’m happy to help in any way I can.” This is my good friend Michael Davis and my pick for the new and improved Seven Oaks CDD Board. It’s up to us to make this happen, so please vote, vote, vote!

or most, motherhood is arguably the most important job there is. The challenges are great, the rewards are many, but most of them are not financial. So, just what is motherhood worth on the open market? Not so Minimum Wage In 2009 Salary.com attempted to answer that very question by polling more than 12,000 mothers. Based on the tasks they perform and time allotted towards each the Salary. com’s online calculator estimated the salary of a mother at over $120,000 annually! Uncovering a Disturbing Fact Aside from being a really fun tool, the Salary.com calculator uncovered a serious truth; it would be very expensive to replace Mom. Certainly the emotional value of a mother is priceless, but if the unfortunate circumstances where Dad needed a nanny to perform the functions Mom once handled, the expense could be crippling. Yet, many women who work within and outside the home remain uninsured. Why Mom is Most Likely to be Uninsured Stay at Home Moms are the most likely to be completely uninsured, due in part to the perception that life insurance protection is intended to safeguard against lost wages versus lost “value.” In the event of Mom’s death, Dad would still need to work full time to sup-
port the family. Think what it would cost to hire a full time nanny, chauffeur, tutor, cook, and personal assistant to run the household in his absence? The younger the children, the more expensive the help could be. How Much Life Insurance is Needed? There are no hard and fast rules for determining how much life insurance is enough, because no two families have exactly the same needs or resources. As a general rule of thumb, the appropriate amount of insurance protection should equal individual’s annual salary multiplied by the number of years before the youngest child is out of college. For example, you determine that the financial value of the services a stay-athome spouse provides for your family equals $50,000 a year. If your youngest child will finish college in 15 years, the appropriate amount of insurance protection needed for the stay-at-home spouse would be approximately $750,000.In addition, you may consider including funeral costs, medical expenses, probate fees, estate taxes and inflation determining an insurance amount. Don’t Wait. Do it Now! It’s true that the longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. You have many options depending on your needs. Please contact me so we can evaluate what is best for the protection of your family. l
It is important to have a balanced life.

If your pet goes astray... Small tip: Try the Power of Scent Try placing a recently worn piece of clothing outside. Animals have a keen sense of smell and familiar smells can bring them home. For indoor cats, place their litter box outside. Most dogs and cats that end up lost have no identification. They could be more easily returned if they did! Be sure your dog and cat have up-to-date identification tags on at all times. Include the pet’s name and the phone numbers where someone can be reached.
Rocky
Do it today! Identification tags are inexpensive. Remember, if your pet has a collar and identification, strangers will be more likely to step in and aid your lost animal. Cats too! Purchase a special “break-away” collar with a built in elastic for cats. Should your cat become caught by the collar (for example on a tree branch) the collar will pull off and prevent choking. As well as a collar and tags, consider having your pet tattooed or microchipped. This can be done at the same time your pet is spayed or neutered.
