hen Christopher Columbus arrived in the new world and landed on his rowboat... the natives could not see his ship out at sea! Their familiarity with their environment and the ocean in particular was such that they couldn’t perceive the ship (something they had never even imagined before). An elder medicine man that had the flexibility of perception had to describe the ship to his fellow tribesmen before they could see it. This same familiarity applies to how we perceive our breathing. To the ancient Indian system of Yoga, breathing is considered to be so important that before any task a yogi first prepares his/her breathing. Proper breath control is considered the key to healthy living. In fact, learning to do proper diaphragmatic breathing has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety permanently. Our breathing is something that we have become so familiar with that we are almost completely unaware of its effects. Consider this, our breath bridges our conscious and unconscious i.e. unconsciously we are always breathing and at any time we can consciously focus on our breathing. This is important to remember because all our emotional states are reflected in our breathing. If we are stressed our breathing tends to be shallow and focused in our upper lungs. In fact jerky breathing itself will actually increase anxiety and stress. While when we are relaxed we tend to breathe fully into our belly. Knowing this you can observe yourself and know when its time to consciously take control of your breathing to control your stress. Practicing belly breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) can be extremely beneficial and can be done anytime. Just follow this simple method... Sit or stand with your back straight, put your hand on your belly and breath in a slow and deep pattern. Don’t try to overfill the lungs or empty them - just breath softly but fully - expanding your belly on the inhale and contracting on the exhale. Keep your attention focused on your breathing. You will find that your mind will tend to drift. That is normal. Simply return your attention to your breath when you notice you got distracted. Allow the relaxation from this breathing pattern to spread through your body and just enjoy yourself.

RESTORING THE BAY
ampa Bay covers 2,700 square miles of open water and watershed, and as development has increased, its wetlands have suffered. One answer? Plant seagrass. In a major step forward in this effort, Tampa Bay Watch, a nonprofit that protects and restores area estuaries, recently received $10,000 from the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay for its “Bay Grasses in Classes” program. Students plant and harvest salt marsh grasses in their schools’ wetlands nurseries to replant. The program has planted over 300,000 plugs, helping restore over 150 acres of habitat since 1995. – Matt Spence, Community Foundation of Tampa Bay

NUTRITION
Looking to Get Healthy? Don’t Overlook Trace Minerals
By Franz Gliederer, MD, MPH and Joy Stephenson-Laws, JD
L
ike vitamins, minerals are nutrients you get from food that provides nourishment to your body. In fact, there are six types of nutrients that your body cannot live without. They are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water. While each has its own role to play in ensuring your body functions at its best, none is more important than the other. The primary role of minerals is helping your body carry out its daily functions and processes in the most efficient and beneficial way possible. There literally is no bodily process, on either the cellular or systemic level, that can operate at its best, or even continue to operate efficiently for that matter, without the right amounts of minerals. They are that critical to your body’s daily functioning. If your body doesn’t get enough, or gets too much, of any of the critical nutrients, you increase your risk of disease or other medical problems. For this reason, minerals can have a significant impact on blood pressure, weight management, cancer prevention, depression, pain, PMS and digestion, to name a few.
So, what are trace minerals? Unfortunately, most people, including many health care professionals, tend to focus on making sure they have enough of the more well-known minerals such as sodium, potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur and calcium. But there is a whole other group of minerals that, while they are not often in the spotlight, are just as essential to your well-being. These are the “trace” minerals, typically metal ions, that your body needs, but in very, very small 12
amounts when compared to other minerals.
They have essential functions including the following: • Being crucial building blocks for hundreds of enzymes • Facilitating a multitude of biochemical reactions • Being a requirement for normal growth and development as well as neurological functions • Serving as anti-oxidants • Supporting the blood system • Being necessary for certain hormones • Being required for normal gonadal development
Here is rundown on the most important trace elements: • Iron: is an essential component of many proteins and enzymes. It is vital in the formation of red blood cells and lean muscle. Iron deficiencies occur worldwide in children, women of childbearing age, pregnant women, and individuals with medical conditions such as gastroenteritis and parasites as well as in persons involved in recurrent intense physical exercise. Strict vegetarian diets may also contribute to iron deficiency. You can find iron in red meat, poultry, seafood and dark leafy vegetables. • Chromium: helps with insulin functions and glucose metabolism. Not getting enough chromium can lead to symptoms that mimic diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance and a need for higher insulin levels. Normally, a well-balanced diet that includes fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, and AUGUST 2017
grains should easily cover your dietary needs of chromium. • Copper: is a component in many enzymes involved in such key functions as energy production, iron metabolism, healthy connective tissue, neurotransmission, and the making of hemoglobin. Copper deficiencies can occur from malnutrition, malabsorption or excessive zinc intake. Symptoms may include abnormal blood cells, bone and connective tissue changes, decreased immune function, bone demineralization and increased risk for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Copper occurs in a wide variety of foods and is most plentiful in organ meats, shellfish, nuts, and seeds, wheat bran cereals and whole grain products. Copper toxicity is rare but can occur with very high levels. • Zinc: is necessary for normal growth and development in children, proper functioning of the immune system, many neurological functions and reproduction. Dietary zinc deficiency is quite common in the undeveloped world and may affect some two billion persons. It can cause impaired development, anemia, skin rashes, neurologic abnormalities and decreased immune function. Zinc rich foods are oysters, beef, crab meat, dark-meat chicken, and turkey, pork, yogurt, milk, cashews, chickpeas, almonds, peanuts, cheese. • Iodine: is a well-known key component of the thyroid hormone. Too little thyroid in drinking water and nutrition can lead to a slowed metabolism, weight gain, abnormal lipid profile and mental sluggishness. Iodine deficiency can have detrimental effects on the developing brain and can cause mental impairment and retardation in Tampa Bay Wellness
How Much Trace Minerals do you Really Need? Luckily, you don’t have to guess about how much of any given trace mineral your body needs every day. All you need to do is look the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI, for short), published by the National Institutes of Health, for a wide variety of nutrients. Here are the RDIs for the most important trace minerals: • Chromium – 25 mcg for women and 35 mcg for men • Copper – 900 mcg for both men and women • Iodine – 150 mcg for both men and women • Iron – 18 mg for women and 8 mg for men • Manganese – 1.8 mg for women and 2.3 mg for men • Molybdenum – 45 mcg for women and men • Selenium – 55 mcg for both women and men • Zinc – 8 mg for women and 11 mg for men
How Do You Know if You Have the Right Amount of Trace Minerals? Many people believe they will get the right amounts of minerals and other nutrients by just “listening” to their bodies and eating the foods they crave. And this does work to a certain extent. For example, you may be right on the mark when you crave water or carbohydrates after you exercise. Or a steak or hamburger may be especially tempting when your body needs protein. But, most of the time, we may just feel a little off and have no idea what our bodies are asking us for. The best thing to do is have comprehensive nutritional testing to see if your body is getting the right balance of trace minerals and other nutrients. If you do have any imbalances – either too much or too little of any key nutrient – you can then take steps to address it either through diet or supplementation.
Why You May Not be Getting Enough Trace Minerals? There are several reasons why you may not be getting all the trace minerals your body needs: • Poor Diet: The number one reason that you may not be getting enough trace minerals is not having a well-balanced diet. • Where You Live: Trace mineral amounts in soil and water are not the same in all parts of the world, so where you live could also impact the quantity and quality of trace minerals in your food. As examples, high yield farming techniques in the U.S. and other countries can deplete trace minerals and the soil in certain sub-Saharan regions are especially low in zinc. www.tampabaywellness.com
• Malabsorption and gastrointestinal diseases: If the gastrointestinal tract becomes inflamed, infected or has a disease which interferes with absorption of minerals and other nutrients, this certainly can lead to decreased absorption and excess loss of minerals. • Surgery: Surgical resection of bowel segments can cause a loss of important uptake and carrier channel sites for mineral uptake. • Pregnancy: Trace mineral deficits frequently occur during pregnancy. While it is rare to encounter severe trace mineral deficiency in the Western World, mild to moderate deficiencies are common and may lead to general often less clearly recognized symptoms such as fatigue, slow metabolism, decreased immune system, and decreased mental capacities. Although a healthy diet does usually provide adequate trace minerals in the body, it is notable that strict vegetarian diets, strenuous exercise, pregnancy, gastrointestinal diseases and malabsorption issues can all contribute to trace mineral deficiencies. c

children. Some 120 countries fortify salt with iodine to counteract iodine deficiency. Seafood is an excellent source of dietary iodine. Dairy products, grains, eggs, and poultry contribute substantially to dietary iodine intakes in the US. • Manganese: is an ingredient and facilitator in many enzymes which have anti-oxidant benefits for a multitude of metabolic functions, support bone development and wound healing. Low manganese levels have been linked to weaker bones. People eating vegetarian diets and Western-type diets may have higher manganese intakes. Rich sources of manganese include whole grains, nuts, leafy vegetables, and teas. • Selenium: is part of the amino acid selenocysteine which occurs in 25 different seleno proteins. Seleno proteins play critical roles in reproduction, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis, and protection from oxidative damage and infection. Not getting enough selenium can make it more likely that you may suffer from cardiovascular disease and, if you are a man, infertility. Seafood and organ meats are the richest food sources of selenium. Other sources include muscle meats, cereals and other grains, and dairy products.

THEME - Mindfulness
Mindfulness through Meditation By Dr. Chris Jackson, PhD, DOM
I
n my recent article entitled “Our Society’s Distorted Perception: Normal Physical Function” one topic I explored was the root of psychological and behavioral disorders, which can be found in physical dysfunction. A relationship with biochemical neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), and acetylcholine was discussed, yet I did not expand into another important area, the relationship of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA) to the stress response (fight or flight) and the sympathetic nervous system. The opposite response is what we know as the parasympathetic response, which has been coined the relaxation response. The Relaxation Response, a book by Herbert Benson, was one of the early entries into the field of wellness based on the work of Benson and others at the Harvard Medical School department of physiology. The teams found that meditative thought could lower the frequencies of brain waves to those correlated to deep relaxation (alpha, delta, and theta waves), while lowering metabolic rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate. Systematic study of self-reports suggests that an individual’s belief sys-
14
tems, expectancies, and assumptions exert a strong influence on his/her state of well-being. Thus, shifting our belief systems can aid in expansion of our consciousness, contribute to the overall well-being of human beings, and move us forward on a path to wellness. Due to neuroplasticity, our ability to grow existing neurological pathways and to generate new neurological pathways, we can make these shifts through the practice of mindfulness and repetitive practice of positive affirmations. WE ARE VERY POWERFUL. We control these supercomputers known as our brains, because we can mold our own thoughts at a very rapid pace. Hundreds of thousands of bio-
chemical reactions happen within our bodies in response to a single thought! We also can meta-cognate, that is we can recognize our own thoughts as they are generated and decide to think differently. We can tap into a non-local awareness, a heightened state of consciousness that is available to us for the asking. We have learned from quantum physics that we are all connected to the universe and each other through our fundamental energetic signatures, our surrounding and conjoined electromagnetic fields. Additionally, it is my belief that we are all connected with a universal source that fuels our growth spiritually, vibrationally, energetically, and physiologically.

Through meditation and other mindfulness practices we have a route to tap into this universal source while balancing our personal energetic beings and addressing the effects of stress. In meditation we are able to look inward and quiet the outside world, and all of its stressors. We may acknowledge the sounds and other distractors, but we are not focused on them. The hum of a noise may actually be used to help one focus on a single tone rather than the swirling thoughts that keep circling back around. Although short-term stress may be useful since it activates a sympathetic response, natural killer (NK) cell activity and general immune activity, chronic stress (a distressed condition) leads to the levels of glucocorticoids (cortisol) being increased via the HPA. Elevated cortisol may lead to a reduction in the number of white blood cells (through apoptosis – programmed cell death) and reduce their functionality. Chronic stress-induced cortisol elevation may also reduce the release of chemical messenger
cytokines, affecting immune system efficiency, thereby resulting in lowered immunity, increased inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and a more rapid aging process that influences the progression of both physiological and psychological, and/or cognitive disorders. Our saving grace, the relaxation response, which can be induced by way of a calming parasympathetic nervous response when we meditate, helps us find inner peace and move toward a quieting of the mind. The more we are able to go inward in meditation the further we move toward the naturally relaxed rhythm of our being, allowing us to detach from the incipient stressors of our overworked and overwhelmed society.

your breathing pattern, you may have shallow breathing or even a habitual reverse breathing pattern. Reverse breathing is when the diaphragm muscles are not fully contracting and the upper chest muscles are overworking to compensate. Come back to the breath in the morning upon awakening and sit for a few minutes in meditation, quieting the mind and mindfully deep breathing. Come back to this mindful breathing and meditation practice any time during the day or night as you are needing to do so. There are a few breathing exercises that work out the transverse abdominis muscles, the antagonist muscles to the diaphragm muscles. Working on the transverse abdominis muscles and the diaphragm muscles will make both muscle groups stronger. Examples are Breath of Fire and the Great Lock (Mahabandh) in Yoga. Another breathing exercise called Alternate Nostril Breathing allows the autonomic nervous system and the prana/ apana flows to be rebalanced. Prana is energy that flows into the body and apana is the energy that flows out of the body. There are breathing exercises designed for specific effects. Some of them are to help with boosting energy, relieving anxiety/nervousness and decreasing compulsive habits. Experience mindful breathing techniques— take a class, learn and explore the exercises that are tools to help us on the journey of life. Tampa Bay Wellness

Laser Facial Rejuvenation Very Natural By Lumina Healing Ctr, Inc
T
herapeutic Laser (or cold laser) is an effective therapy for stimulating collagen and elastin. When the laser is shined on the skin, it dilates capillaries, allowing fresh blood supply and nutrients to the area, accelerating repair and regeneration of tissue. Therapeutic laser promotes the increase of oxygen for healthy cell metabolism, increasing lymph flow and speeding up the removal of cellular waste byproducts. Unlike cosmetic lasers which burn
and peel skin, the therapeutic laser does just the opposite. It is effective for the healing of burns, open wounds, severe back pain and many inflammatory and painful conditions. Oscar Hernandez, owner of Lumina Healing Center, explains, “The therapeutic laser is comfortable and healing to the human body. At Lumina Healing Center, we incorporate the use of various lasers, depending on the condition being treated. Certain lasers are effective for the treatment of severe chronic
pain/inflammation (deep penetration) and others for facial (shallow stimulation). For clients who are not afraid of needles, we take it one step further and perform facial rejuvenation with therapeutic laser followed by acupuncture for $65.” Location: 2903 Dr. MLK St. N, St. Petersburg. Mindful Mini-Meditations
By Aluna Michaels, M.A.
W
e already lead busy lives, and a busy summertime can rob us of any precious free time. It’s easy to get wrapped up with preparations and extra tasks. Making time for meditation can seem utterly impossible. It can feel like a chore and cause additional stress. However, when you’re most anxious is when you most need meditation! Luckily, this dilemma can be solved. Breaking up your meditation throughout the day can be as effective as doing it “in one sitting”. Here are some suggestions to help you keep your cool during the summer and the going-back-to school preparations. -- Try taking a few minutes for stretching or deep breathing right after you get out of bed. Even practicing two or three simple yoga postures can help you remember your spirit as you leap into your schedule. -- When you finish in the shower, don’t get out right away. Stand there a few extra minutes in order to “wash your soul”. Imagine the water cleaning off stress and “resentment residue”. In your mind’s eye, see those pressures 18
gurgling down the drain, leaving you free to start (or continue) the day spiritually cleansed and refreshed. -- Take advantage of the time you may have standing in line at a store. Rather than feeling frustrated and increasingly irritated, use those moments for mediation. Breathe deeply and regain your center. Bless the people in front of you -- they are as stressed out as you are! And send kind thoughts to the clerk or check-out person. Their job is very hard, since they have to deal with anxious people all day long. You’re a prisoner to the situation anyway, so use the time to build up your reserves and send healing to others, rather than contribute to the atmosphere of stress around you. -- When you get into your car after being in a crowded store, make a point to breathe deeply to release the energy you encountered in there. This doesn’t have to take long -- especially since someone is probably eagerly awaiting your parking space! Just two or three deep inhalations and exhalations taken with a clear intention can do the trick. As

you drive into traffic, you will feel better having consciously released that energy. -- And what of the mixed blessing of family gatherings? So many various personalities, squealing kids, heavy-duty expectations! When you feel your blood boiling from all the noise and activity, retreat to the bathroom where your privacy will (hopefully!) be honored. Use this time to breathe and use a small personal chant -- maybe “Love”, “Om”, or “All is well”. They don’t have to be spiritual words, as long as the message you give yourself helps you get through the experience with grace and poise! At the end of the day, you may have meditated for a total of 20 or 30 minutes. As you collapse into bed after your hectic day, do one more little exercise. Forgive yourself for the times you forgot to meditate during the day and lost your cool instead. Praise yourself when you did remember to stay grounded and centered. Then drift into a restful sleep!

GREEN LIVING Mayors Embrace Clean Energy MIAMI BEACH - The U.S. Conference of Mayors approved a historic resolution that establishes support from the nation’s mayors for the goal of moving to 100% clean and renewable energy in cities nationwide. Meeting June 23-26 in Miami Beach, the Conference hosted leaders from more than 250 cities. The weekend kicked off with Sierra Club’s “Sunrise for Solar,” a human aerial art formation on the beach behind the conference hotel which aimedatencouragingtheU.S.ConferenceofMay- ors to adopt the resolution. The bipartisan group of mayors unanimously backed the commitment forU.S.citiestorunentirelyonrenewablesources such as wind and solar in two decades. TheSierraClub’snewMayorsfor100%Clean Energy campaign was launched nationally this spring and is co-chaired by Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine. Jodie Van Horn, national Sierra Club organizer of the Ready for 100 campaign, attended the conference and met with Sierra Club volunteers and staff from across the country. So far, 36 cities across the United States have now committed to transition to 100% renewable energy, and 129 mayors have signed onto this vision. “Cities don’t need to wait for Washington, D.C. to act in

For the first time in U.S. history, the EECBG program made it possible for cities, counties and states to receive grants specifi- callytofundenergy-efficiency projects. Shifting from dirty fossil fuelstocleansourcesofenergy like wind and solar strengthens communities by spurring economic growth, addressing cli- mate change, and reducing pollu- tion, says Gorman. “These lead- ers recognize the importance of lower energy costs, improved public health, and stable, local jobs in protecting the physical and financial well-being of their residents.” 20
he City of Sarasota and the City of Dunedin this summer joined Orlando and Miami Beach in committing to the Ready for 100 campaign. With a focus on sustainability and quality of life in Sarasota, the City Commission on June 19 unanimously approved joining the Sierra Club’s Ready for 100 campaign to transition to 100 percent renewable energy sources. The Sarasota Climate Justice Coalition, which includes Sierra Club Florida along with concerned local citizens, organizations and businesses, presented the commission with 2,000 petition signatures supporting the measure. The City of Sarasota municipal operations plans to be powered by renewable energy sources by 2030. The initiative includes a community-wide goal to convert to 100 percent renew- able energy by 2045. On July 13, Dunedin Mayor Julie Ward Bujalski officially joinedtheMayorsfor100% Clean Energy campaign and City Commissioners unanimously approved moving the city to entirely clean and renewable energy. Mayor Buddy Dyer issued a proclamation in late May endorsing a goal of powering Orlando entirely with clean and renewable energy by 2050. Mayor Philip Levine of Miami Beach signed on in May with a plan to update the city’s Climate Action Plan and commit the city’s municipal buildingsto100%clean and renewable energy supply by 2025. Sierra Club Florida is working with cities and municipalities on transitioning to clean energy.

GREEN LIVING
August Outdoors WHAT TO PLANT: Annuals/Bedding plants: The
hottest days of summer limit planting now to heat-tolerant annuals, such as coleus, kalanchoe, and vinca.
Bulbs: Aztec lily, butterfly lily, walking iris, and spider lily can be planted any time of the year, even late summer. Herbs: Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Vegetables: Tomatoes, beans, car-
rots and others can be planted for the fall garden.
WHAT TO DO: Palms: Check older fronds for yellow-
ing as it may indicate a magnesium or potassium deficiency. Apply an appropriate palm fertilizer.
Vegetables: Solarize the vegetable garden in preparation for fall planting if not done in July. Poinsettias: Pinch back poinsettias and mums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to form for winter bloom. Ornamental plants: Fertilize plants that show signs of deficiencies. Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilizer Bans: Some munici-
palities in central Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/ or landscape plants during the summer
rainy season (June–September). See if such an ordinance exists in your area.
Annuals/Bedding plants:
Remove spent blooms, cut back, and fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months.

THE BODY - Qigong
BALANCE & HARMONY
Qigong, deals with the Three Treasures of Man, The Shen (spirit) the Qi (energy) and the Jing (body) all Three Treasures are treated simultaneously in order to affect a complete release of stagnant Qi or energy. At the Sentient Temple we say,
“Doctors Treat, God Heals”
Qigong “Qi” (pronounced chee), means air, breath of life, or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe. “Gong” (pronounced gung, as in lung) means the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement. Together, Qigong means the skill of cultivating vital energy, or the ability to work with the electromagnetic energy of the body. Qigong is a mind-body practice that improves one’s mental and physical health by integrating postures, movement, breathing techniques, and focused intention.
Medical Qigong
Medical Qigong therapy is the eldest therapeutic modality of Chinese medicine. It is a comprehensive system of health care, addressing the root cause of symptoms or disease, while treating the client as a whole. Medical qigong treatments are based upon a differential diagnosis rooted in Chinese medical theory. In a Medical Qigong treatment, the 22
practitioner, having developed through dedicated study and self-cultivation the ability to sense and manipulate energy, uses qi emission to restore health and wellness to the client. The practitioner may also teach medical qigong exercises and meditations Practiced as an excellent adjunct to Western medicine, medical qigong and Chinese medicine may successfully treat conditions which Western medicine finds resistant or ambiguous.

In Traditional Chinses Medicine (TCM) the basis of all disease is caused by emotional trauma. This is a Yang energy, eliminate this Yang energy and we have harmony which is Yin. Thus, Yin/Yang are the balance that cures all dis-harmony and brings you to a state of normalcy, here at the Sentient Temple we teach and guide any patient in a Yang state how to harmonize their life through Prescription Exercises into a state of harmony which promotes wellbeing and eliminates disease.
A Theory Fundamental to TCM Practice The theory of Yin and Yang is fundamental to the practice of TCM in terms of understanding, diagnosing, and treating health issues. At the most basic and deep level, TCM treatment seeks to balance Yin and Yang in each person. One ancient TCM text expressed the power and importance of Yin and Yang Tampa Bay Wellness
THE BODY - Qigong this way: “If you can understand Yin and Yang you can hold the universe in your hands.”
How Yin and Yang Apply to You and Your Life
You might be wondering how Yin and Yang apply to you and your life, and to any health issues you might have. Theories are interesting, but unless they have some meaning to your own experience, what’s the point? First, the theory of Yin-Yang tells us that at the macro level—the largest scale imaginable—all things are always balancing and rebalancing into a state of perfect harmony. Yes, there is ceaseless change, yet this movement and flux, at its deepest level, is creating harmony, is perfect harmony. Yin and Yang are the two energies that embody Universal law, which ensures that all things remain in harmony.
It’s often difficult to actually see this harmony on a smaller scale, in the world around us, for instance. It isn’t always apparent in the world humans have created and especially in our busy, frequently complicated modern lives. But think about it: if you really understand and believe in Yin and Yang, harmony is the Universal architectural framework that underlies and impacts this reality. So in essence, harmony is the only ground we walk on and is the very air we breathe. How can you apply this awareness to your life? A great part of TCM’s healing approach is to help you step back from your life and look at where your life might actually be creating health issues for you. For most people, this is a process that happens over time. For some, it comes in a moment of great insight. From the TCM perspective, what is the point of continually treating symptoms that are caused by emotions, patterns of thought, belief systems, or

The total eclipse enriches your relationships, drawing new love to you, or restoring a “honeymoon” feeling in your current one. Also, with Saturn going direct, you’ll feel connected to the Universe. Things seem to effortlessly go your way! LEO July 23rd – Aug. 22nd
Happy birthday Leo! The total eclipse in your sign empowers anything you’re working on. You’ll feel a shift in self-esteem. Create new habits of self-nurture. Shop for healthier food and eat better. Allow enough time for rest and sleep. You deserve your love! Clear boundaries in relationships improve communication problems. As you work with affirmations, you truly believe what you are saying. Meditate on feeling yourself in that new reality!
SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22nd – Dec. 21st
Saturn moves direct in your sign, giving results of hard work! If you feel trapped, bored or even depressed, your mood shifts for the better! Also, the total eclipse sparks inspiration and meaning in everything you do! Your sense of humor returns. Meditation reveals deeper meaning in your recent struggles, and you’ll feel like the Universe is on your side again. Limit time with people who pull you down, or who’s life outlook doesn’t match your own.
Astrology GEMINI
TAURUS April 20th – May 20th
May 21st– June 20th
No matter how longstanding your “issues” are, you can re-pattern your thinking and feel happier! Those positive emotions magnetize better circumstances to you. The total eclipse gives insight into family wounds that have unconsciously shaped you, so you can re-shape yourself consciously into who you wish to be! Saturn moving direct helps you trust intimate connections, feel more bonded, and even can resolve financial stressors.
Meditate to release negative ideas you have about relationships. Unconscious beliefs attract what you don’t want, so explore your depths. Let go of ideas created from past experiences, family modeling or cultural concepts. Use affirmations to build new thoughts and reinforce them by feeling what it’s like to life from that awesome reality! You’ll be amazed at quick results you get. You’ll also feel a deep sense of belonging that evaded you the past year or so.
VIRGO This month’s total eclipse strengthens your intuition. Pay attention to your dreams and allow extra time for meditation. Release old frustrations and negative thinking that block the flow of abundance into your life. You’re making room for positive new experiences! You might have insights into family patterns, or even issues from past lives, that hinder you now. You have the ability to completely cut off from that way of thinking, and create a new life. Nurture new thought patterns so their roots strengthen!
Dec. 22nd – Jan. 19th
Let go of resentments at this total eclipse. It’s time to forgive and heal. You’ll have a burst of energy. Health improves and you’ll feel more vitality. Prosperity can also increase. Opening your heart to trust deeply again heals chronic loneliness. Your ruling planet, Saturn, moves forward now, helping you feel more included in life as you let go of old burdens of shame and blame. Draw limits and healthy boundaries where you need, but removing the hurt and anger protect you as well! You can also have a wonderful new job opportunity if you’re looking for a change!

Financial blocks loosen and abundance will flow! It’ s also a good time to look at wise investments, and to create a new budget. Meditate on being as open as possible to receive all the “good stuff”. You’ve worked hard, so don’t be suspicious when it starts happening! Ask for guidance in your dreams, because you’ll get answers. Also looks for signs when you’re awake.
AQUARIUS
PISCES
Jan. 20th – Feb. 18th
Feb. 19th – March 20th
You’ll have a big breakthrough in relationships with the total eclipse! Whether you’re single or partnered, the slow, steady work you’ve done on yourself will pays off. Major inner changes seem to appear all at once, but are actually an accumulation of small steps made all year. Current partnerships transform for the better, or you’ll attract someone who resonates with your new self! Meditate on self-love and on gratitude to keep doors to change open. Have fun in general, since you can hide socially by overworking. You deserve to enjoy life!
Revitalize your health at the total eclipse! What major steps can you take? Eliminate junk food? Quit smoking? Get more sleep? Release chronic worrying? Any changes bring solid results that inspire you to keep going in that direction. Also meditate on compassion and forgiveness towards yourself. You’re so hard on yourself. Ceasing that mental habit works wonders for your body, mind and soul! You can also have a breakthrough at work, with a person or in an area you’d previous given up hope for a shift!

Know Yourself as Eternal, Non-changing and Absolute By: George Lockett
A
s we walk through life we see the constant change around us as everything follows its natural life cycle. Our body is no exception; it is constantly changing growing and evolving. Yet the person within the body, that silent witness to all we experience, has an eternal quality of something much greater and more permanent that who or what we think we are. In our quite moments when we are walking or sitting with nature, our feelings reach out and connect and touch a deeper layer of our heart and soul. We become in union with that hidden force that orders the whole of creation. We can be one with this field of love, this presence of the divine, which is within us and surrounding us in each moment of our lives. All we need to do is just be present and our awareness will naturally settle and become one with its divine nature. We leave behind our physical nature and connect with that presence of love that underlies the physical. We connect with our true Self the silent witness to our life and experiences. That which was never born can never die. Our true self is the eternal continuum of life itself. What happens in our life is here just for a few moments; we are connected to the whole of life. We can choose any experience we wish to have in each moment, just by choosing that experience with the next breath we take. You have come to earth for a divine purpose, to have an experience and to create your dreams with your imagination. Next time
you are out in nature take the time to reflect on what your dream is? What you have chosen to create in this lifetime. Ask yourself what your true nature is? Like any plant in the garden we are all unique. We have come into this world with a specific DNA a blue print for life. A rose can only grow into a rose, a daisy a daisy. What is your nature? We surround ourselves with a loving nurturing atmosphere. We are here to grow and develop jus t like the plants in the garden. We have been allocated a life cycle, just like the plants. This is not a dress rehearsal it is life itself. What is your dream? What is your passion? What difference do you want to create and express in this lifetime? We are all different we all have a different nature and a different dream to live. We are not here to copy anyone, we are here to express our nature and live our dream and be the finest example of who and what we wish to create in this lifetime. So next time you are feeling connected to your soul and at peace with the whole Universe. Allow your higher Self to guide you, on your path to your true destiny. It’s important to stay alert, because the sooner your cat’s pain is diagnosed and treated, the sooner he or she can heal and resume a normal, happy life. If your cat exhibits one or more of these behaviors and you suspect it may be due to pain, notify your veterinarian immediately. DAILY HABITS: • Withdraws from social interaction • Decreased appetite • Changes in sleeping or drinking • Fails to use the litter box • Urinates frequently • Won’t groom or grooms less, looks unkempt • Sleeps more FACIAL EXPRESSION: • Grimaces, furrowed brow, vacant

Many human pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, are poisonous to and can be fatal to cats. Different types of pain require different types of treatment. After diagnosing the problem, your veterinarian will explain the benefits, risks and costs associated with each option. That way, you and your veterinarian can choose the treatment plan that best meets the needs or you and your cat. Animal Alternatives - 238 E. Bearss Ave. Tampa, Florida 33613 - 813-265-2411

CASE STUDY
Victory over PAIN - Janet’s Story By: Dr. Mary Riggin, AP
J
anet* came to see me because her right shoulder was is tremendous pain. She couldn’t move it to brush her hair or teeth. Even getting dressed caused her to be in a lot of pain. This had been going on for several months and none of the doctors she went to see could help her. They tried shots, pain medications, physical therapy and it all fell short of giving her the relief she needed to resume her life’s activities. She was especially upset that her interactions with her grandson had to be put on hold because of her pain and inability to handle a toddler for more than an hour. Living like this was causing her to be more and more frustrated as the weeks flew by, “What can be done?” She would cry to herself. All of this happened due to side-effects of her cholesterol medication, and even though she stopped taking the medication per her doctor’s order, the pain continued. On one of many desperate attempts to find a supplement or herbal pill to help her pain, she ran into a young man who was passing out information about acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. After telling him about her sad tale of pain and suffering, and then hearing about some of the possibilities that acupuncture and oriental medicine could offer, she decided to consider this option. The next day, however, after giving it more thought, she had decided that her condition was way too complicated to discuss with anyone other than an MD. Taking a vitamin was one thing, but trusting her health to someone other than an MD was something she thought irresponsible. Janet’s hesitance and uncertainty about going outside the normal medical community caused her to put the card for the acupuncturist aside. She thought to herself “if that’s the answer to my problem, why didn’t my primary doctor recommend it?” And with that thought, she dismissed the possibility of that being the answer to her problem, for many more months. Then, one day, as she was cleaning out her desk drawer, she found the card with the acupuncture information on it and took another look. It had been months since she had the conversation with that “nice young man at the vitamin store” and decided that since she was STILL struggling with pain, she would give it a try. After discussing it with her doctor, and getting his approval, she made the appointment. After an extensive health history evaluation, and an initial trial of 3 visits, Janet’s response to the treatment was miraculous. Her shoulder was finally feeling better! Her range of motion was improving, her energy level was coming back, and her overall body felt more relaxed and normal. She was thrilled; nearly 70% of the pain was gone and she finally had hope of a full recovery! During her initial three visits, Janet also received an education in how Oriental Medicine can be used as a form of www.tampabaywellness.com
primary healthcare that can be used to achieve and maintain optimal health. She was amazed that not only could she get pain relief, but she now had the opportunity to actually fix the cause of the pain. It made so much sense to her when I explained that Oriental Medicine uses the symptoms as an indicator of a deeper problem. When that deeper imbalance is treated, even when there are no symptoms, the body’s ability to heal, mend and repair is enhanced. So, over the course of several months, we worked on correcting the cause of the symptoms; again, not based on Western Medicine’s parameters, but using Oriental Medicine’s ancient diagnostic techniques and treatment principles. Once that aspect of her program was completed, she continued with maintenance treatments, and even facial rejuvenation treatments to fade lines, lift eye lids and the chin. By staying proactive in her healthcare program over the course of years, she’s entering her 70th year with more vibrancy than ever. I do need to say though; Janet’s results were based on a combination of methods. I could do the amazing work using acupressure/acupuncture/bodywork, to address the body’s imbalances and blockages, but addressing the behavior that caused the problem in the first place gets you the best results. Patients that don’t do their homework still get a result, but it’s more “up and down” and ends up requiring more ongoing treatments. I believe we all need to make our own decisions, and I try to respect everyone’s choices. My job is to educate you, so you understand the effects of actions that are contributing to the degeneration of the body’s organs and systems. Now Janet really “got it” and made a 180 degree turn around with her food once she became educated. As I said you can get results without self-care and following the food guidelines, but overall results will be WAY better if you do your homework and follow the food guidelines and fitness guidelines I recommend. Until next time, remember, your body was designed to: Heal Mend and Repair - it just needs the right environment! *The name “Janet” is a fictitious name, but the story is based on a real patient getting real results. DREAMS
DREAMS: SIGNS, SYMBOLS AND INTERPRETATION
A
ll dreams are experienced for the benefit of the individual, just takes and bit of understanding in order to interpret them. Most dream signs, symbols and interpretations are individual. However, some dreams can be universal in interpretation. Dreams are the activities of the unseen world of the real self.
Dreams, in whatever character they may come, are the reflection of: 1. Physical conditions. 2. The subconscious. 3. A projection from the superconscious. If we consider what happens to us in our daily lives, our conversations, in reveries, in remorse, in times of passion, in surprises, deeply hidden emotions and fears, or past life memoires, in our dream world we often see ourselves in masquerade disguises. They appear to us in the form of signs and symbols either, uniquely representative of ourselves or a universal archetype.
Types of dreams A. Physical B. Mental C. Emotional D. Spiritual, often represented by earth, air, fire, water. E. Psychic We dream every night. Even though we may not remember them, their imprint is still within us. Dreams are meant to give us guidance: • To prepare the subconscious mind for events not yet on the horizon. • To solve problems that already exist. • To awaken ourselves to growth op30
portunities in the future. • To further our spiritual connection-with those in spirit, our guides, etheric teachers, masters, and God. • To enable us to clear negative or shadow parts of our psyche. • To process emotional information or overload we are unable to handle in our waking state.
Dream interpretations are clues for better functioning in our daily life.
It is best that dreams be studied in a series and not as individual dreams. For instance, after an especially vivid dream, record it as well as the following 7 nights. By trying to understand the symbols made in 1 dream will help to illuminate others. Then connecting all 7 nights of dreams signs and symbols will you be able to recognize meanings and guidance more clearly. It is important to keep a dream journal so you can follow up with analysis over time to determine your own individual definition of your symbols, record how it makes you feel, record where it is, and the meanings you understand about your symbols. It is very helpful to have a couple dream symbols books on hand to help you arrive at your own interpretation. Dreams can be realistically true or symbolically true. Gifted psychics are more prone to receive understandable predictive material than non-psychics who usually receive dream guidance through symbols. The symbols in our dreams are either people, places, objects, or the self. People in your dream can be ones who need attention which could be positive, negative or a neutral image. Such as: a baby can mean a new beAUGUST 2017
ginning, a child can be acting childlike in a situation, or need to look at situation through your inner child. People call up something to you: physically, morally, intellectually, or emotionally. People many times are archetypes or what are known as universal symbols. A dream symbols book will help with this also. Most importantly, people are usually a part of you in disguise or in symbol form. Nightmares or dreams of horror are meant to call attention to an urgent or extremely important matter. Our dream world is a rich and informative source for help and wellbeing. Realizing the deep and meaningful part of ourselves from that which is within us is invaluable. To gain further help and guidance for your daytime world, you can program your dream world by commanding yourself to receive wisdom and guidance for whatever situation you wish right before you fall asleep. Writing it down and putting it under your pillow is another method to command your inner world to reveal to you what it is you need to know for any particular issue. REV. MARCELLA ZINNER, M.M.
