Valentine's Day Tantric Awareness Retreat for Couples Re-Awaken your Love Offered by Val Spies and Dr. John Gianoli of the Lotus Pond Yoga Retreat Center, Tampa
Date: February 12-13 Location: The Vinoy Resort, St. Petersburg
A
uthentic passionate love awaits every conscious couple. The challenge is finding the time to discover the hidden treasures that lie dormant amidst the busy-ness of everyday life.
8 FEBRUARY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness
It is truly amazing that cell phones & computers can demand more of our attentions than the most important aspect of our lives; love and intimacy. For many couples, the thought of spending even two days of total presence with each other (no cell phones) can bring up an alarming amount of resistance. If we don't pause here and open ourselves to the true, authentic experiences of studies such as tantric yoga, our intimate relationships could definitely be in jeopardy. As technology continues to chip away at our ability to be in the present moment, feeling the rhythms, sensations and pleasures of human touch often gets lost in the background. Tantric breath work and awareness of the oneness that can be experienced with a loved one grounds us to the earth and connects us to the infinite aspects of existence at the same time. Exploring the space in-between can be ecstatic to say the least! It’s what we live for, yet rarely give the time of day. Valentines Day may be a commercial holiday in many ways, however, at the same time it is a wonderful reminder to Pay Attention to the love that stands before you!
instruction to help couples reconnect with the wonderful energy that brought them together originally. Their workshops include Tantric breath work, guided massage, partner yoga (novices welcome), and exploration of the male/female energetic connection in a fun and comfortable atmosphere. Workshop cost is $225 for 2people/2days plus the special hotel rate offered at the Vinoy, or $190 for Saturday only.
Val Spies, director of the Lotus Pond Yoga Retreat Center, and John Gianoli, MD, Kundalini Instructor, offer couple’s intimacy retreats that provide the space and

best in cooler weather and should be used when they are fresh, compact and without any yellow or wilted leaves.
January’s Vegetable of the Month is the hearty, healthy Brussels sprout. Brussels sprouts got their name from the city in Belgium, where they were thought to have first been grown. Available from October to May, Brussels Sprouts grow
A member of the Brassica vegetable family, Brussels sprouts have high amounts of vitamin C and soluble fiber and contain multiple nutrients with potent anti-cancer properties: 3,3'-Diindolylmethane, sulforaphane and selenium. Their high fiber content helps to lower cholesterol, especially when steamed. These little powerhouses can be delicious when prepared properly. l

Secrets for Sensitive People to Find Relationships that Work: Why Emotional Empaths Stay Lonely or Alone Adapted from Emotional Freedom: Liberate Yourself From Negative Emotions & L i b e r a t e Yo u r L i f e b y J u d i t h O r l o ff M D

oneliness gets to some more than others. But why it hangs on isn’t always apparent when read by traditional medical eyes. In my medical practice and workshops I’ve been struck by how many sensitive, empathic people who I call “emotional empaths” come to me, lonely, wanting a romantic partner, yet remaining single for years. Or else they’re in relationships but feel constantly fatigued and overwhelmed. The reason isn’t simply that “there aren’t enough emotionally available people ‘out there,’” nor is their burnout “neurotic.” Personally and professionally, I’ve discovered that something more is going on.

Once we empaths learn to set boundaries and negotiate our energetic preferences, intimacy becomes possible.
Emotional empaths are a species unto themselves. Whereas others may thrive on the togetherness of being a couple, for empaths like me, too much togetherness can be difficult, may cause us to bolt. Why? We tend to intuit and absorb our partner’s energy, and become overloaded, anxious, or exhausted when we don’t have time to decompress in our own space. We’re super-responders; our sensory experience of relationship is the equivalent of feeling objects with fifty fingers instead of five. Energetically sensitive people unknowingly avoid romantic partnership because deep down they’re afraid of getting engulfed. Or else, they feel engulfed when coupled, a nervewracking, constrictive way to live. If this isn’t understood, empaths can stay perpetually lonely; we want companionship, but, paradoxically, it doesn’t feel safe. One empath-patient told me, “It helps explain why at thirty-two I’ve only had two serious relationships, each lasting less than a year.” Once we empaths learn to set boundaries and negotiate our energetic preferences, intimacy becomes possible. For emotional empaths to be at ease in a relationship, the traditional paradigm for coupling must be redefined. Most of all, this means asserting your personal space needs--the physical and time limits you set with someone so you don’t feel they’re on top of you. Empaths can’t fully experience emotional freedom with anwww.tampabaywellness.com

other until they do this. Your space needs can vary with your situation, upbringing, and culture. My ideal distance to keep in public is at least an arm’s length. In doctors’ waiting rooms I’ll pile my purse and folders on the seats beside me to keep others away. With friends it’s about half that. With a mate it’s variable. Sometimes it’s rapture being wrapped in his arms; later I may need to be in a room of my own, shut away. One boyfriend who truly grasped the concept got me a “Keep Out” sign for my study door! For me, this was a sign of true love. All of us have an invisible energetic border that sets a comfort level. Identifying and communicating yours will prevent you from being bled dry by others. Then intimacy can flourish, even if you’ve felt suffocated before. Prospective mates or family members may seem like emotional vampires when you don’t know how to broach the issue of personal space. You may need to educate others--make clear that this isn’t about not loving them--but get the discussion going. Once you can, you’re able to build progressive relationships. If you’re an empath or if the ordinary expectations of coupledom don’t jibe with you practice the following tips. continued on page 15 Tampa Bay Wellness • FEBRUARY 2011 13
Define Your Personal Space Needs Tips for empaths to feel at ease in a relationship Tip 1. What
to say to a potential mate As you’re getting to know someone, share that you’re a sensitive person, that you periodically need quiet time. The right partner will be understanding; the wrong person will put you down for being “overly sensitive,” won’t respect your need.
Tip 2. Clarify
your preferred sleep style
Traditionally, partners sleep in the same bed. However, some empaths never get used to this, no matter how caring a mate. Nothing personal; they just like their own sleep space. Speak up about your preferences. Feeling trapped in bed with someone, not getting a good night’s rest, is torture. Energy fields blend during sleep, which can overstimulate empaths. So, discuss options with your mate. Separate beds. Separate rooms. Sleeping together a few nights a week. Because non-empaths may feel lonely sleeping alone, make compromises when possible.
Tip 3. Negotiate
your square footage needs
You may be thrilled about your beloved until you live together. Experiment with creative living conditions so your home isn’t a prison. Breathing room is mandatory. Ask yourself, “What space arrangements are optimal?” Having an area to retreat to, even if it’s a closet? A room divider? Separate bathrooms? Separate houses? I prefer having my own bedroom/office to retreat to. I also can see the beauty of separate wings or adjacent houses if affordable. Here’s why: conversations, scents, coughing, movement can feel intrusive. Even if my partner’s vibes are sublime, sometimes I’d rather not sense them even if they’re only hovering near me. I’m not just being finicky; it’s about maintaining well-being if I live with someone.

Tip 4. Travel
wisely
Traveling with someone, you may want to have separate space too. Whether my companion is romantic or not, I’ll always have adjoining rooms with my own bathroom. If sharing a room is the only option, hanging a sheet as a room divider will help. “Out of sight” may make the heart grow fonder.
Tip 5. Take
regular mini-breaks Empaths require private downtime to regroup. Even a brief escape prevents emotional overload. Retreat for five minutes into the bathroom with the door shut. Take a stroll around the block. Read in a separate room. One patient told her boyfriend, “I need to disappear into a quiet room for ten minutes at a party, even if I’m having fun,” a form of self-care that he supports. In my medical practice, I’ve seen this creative approach to relationships save marriages and make ongoing intimacies feel safe, even for emotional empaths (of all ages) who’ve been lonely and haven’t had a long-term partner before. Once you’re able to articulate your needs, emotional freedom in your relationships is possible.

$300 Billion in Drugs Each year in America, over $300 billion is spent on prescription drugs. We are essentially a nation that looks to external forces to try to heal us internally. Many people are beginning to turn to alternative methods of healing which focus more on internal sources. Self-healing, has always been part of mankind’s knowledge, however, it is becoming both a more powerful and a more commonly used solution, one to which people with all sorts of ailments are turning.

Acupuncturist gives back to community
By: Carly Hart
G
alina Roofener is a local acupuncture physician and doctor of Oriental medicine who regularly offers free classes to help educate the community about the benefits of acupuncture and qigong. A few things she is focusing on are improving the quality of life and empowering cancer patients, joining in the efforts to get Medicare to cover acupuncture, and putting a human face back on Western medicine. Dr. Roofener currently offers free medical qigong classes (a Chinese system of medical exercise) at Well Spring Oncology twice per month and at Hip Expressions Belly Dance Studio once a month. She also has a weekly class at the Hope Lodge at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. “This particular type of qigong is designed for management of emotion, as well as, pain management. In traditional Chinese medicine we believe that emotions (stress) are the major contributing factor for many internal diseases including cancer. Practicing qigong indirectly allows the patients to take control over their own health. It’s a very gentle exercise. Even patients who are on chemotherapy, and those who are severely debilitated and cannot do any other type of physical exercise, benefit from this tremendously,” said Dr. Roofener. “Most important is the empowerment of the patient and to let them know that they can do something themselves to combat disease in
the active stages and also, do something to hopefully prevent the disease from coming back.” Johanna Krynytzky, owner of Hip Expressions, is a breast cancer survivor who used qigong to get her through her ordeal and still uses it today. Krynytzky says, “Working my way through the process, from diagnosis to surgeries and chemotherapy, was difficult on many levels. There were times when even the simplest yoga was difficult or impossible, but I was able to practice the qigong. Sometimes sitting, sometimes standing, even lying down, I applied breath and movement and energy and I was able to stay balanced and sane.” “Not only did qigong help me by keeping me engaged physically, but it offered emotional and mental stability in challenging times. Body-mind-spirit exercises are fundamental to fully participate in our lives on a daily basis, but even more critical is to engage in a mindful practice while battling physical, mental, and emotional challenges. Now, two and a half years later, I am back to my dance and yoga routine... and have added qigong to my daily practice as well.” Dr. Sarach Rausch, Director of Integrative Medicine Department at Moffitt, in conjunction with Dr. Roofener, is conducting clinical research on the benefits of qigong in cancer patients at Moffitt Cancer Center. That study utilizes a quality of life questionnaire as a measuring tool and the results are stunning.
Qigong Fast Facts from Dr. Roofener’s website asiantherapies.org: Qigong is an ancient Chinese mind-body exercise practice that uses meditation, breathing control and movement to balance the flow of energy (Qi) through the body. The goal of qigong exercises is: • to correct the electromagnetic imbalances enabling the body • to strengthen and regulate the internal organs, the nervous system and the immune system • to relieve pain and regulate homeostasis • to purge deep-seated emotions and stress • to provide a feeling of calm, comfort, balance and rejuvenation • to improve physical strength and energy • to aid in increasing longevity and overall good health Medical Qigong is extensively used in the treatment of cancer to help reduce or eliminate side effects from radiation and chemotherapy.

After one, 1 hour session patients saw the following reductions: Pain 30% Fatigue 57% Anxiety 50% Overall Physical Distress 50% Overall Emotional Distress 60% Increase in Quality of Life 8% They are currently seeking a grant to extend these studies to include lab work that measures inflammatory markers and cortisol. Dr. Roofener is a member of is the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM). This group is working to pass bill through congress to get Medicare to cover acupuncture. “It is ridiculous that our aging population who are approaching Medicare cannot get coverage for acupuncture,” said Dr. Roofener. “Medicare would financially benefit if they covered acupuncture because they spend billions and billions of dollars for pain management which generally has limited effectiveness and lots of side effects. Acupuncture is very effective and less expensive and in the long run, it is much safer. The only negative side affect that acupuncture might have is slight bruising, that’s it.” As a member of Florida Society of Doctors of Oriental Medicine (FSDOM), she and fellow members provided complementary acupuncture treatments at the annual conference of the National Foundation for Women Legislators in Orlando November 18 – 21. Dr. Roofener personally treated two senators, three legislators and quite a few assistant personnel. Robin Read, President and CEO of The National Foundation for Woman Legislators commented on how great the conference was and about her appreciation for the insights on economical alternative approaches such as diet and acupuncture treatments. Read states, “Legislators from around the country enjoyed acupuncture - most of them for the first time in their lives - after a stressful election campaign. And they raved about their increased energy levels and lack of pain. The legislators said it was unlike any other conference they had ever been to because of the acupuncture..." Representative Julie Brown from Rochester, NH said, “I thought acupuncture was voodoo, but I was walking with a cane before my 20 minute treatment, then I got up off the table with no cane and no pain!” IA State Representative, Annette Sweeney claims her headache went away with the treatment of acupuncture at the conference. She also said, “Dr. Roofener treated me, as well as, reviewed what was going on in my life and asked me some ‘right on’ questions to help me address some health issues. Great experience for a ‘total’ experience.”
Feel The Positive Connection To Your Self, Group & World The timing is perfect!
“I don’t care what anyone’s political beliefs are,” says Dr. Roofener, “all that I care about is healthy, pain free bodies and accessible, affordable medicine for everybody and medicine with a human face. That’s what I want to promote, that everybody have a choice in health care.” Dr. Roofener deeply believes that times of separation of Western and alternative medicine have passed and for the best benefits of a patient, doctors need to practice integrative medicine and view patients holistically. She feels that the team approach always wins. The Body The Other Body Rhythm We are all aware of the rhythm of the breath and the rhythm of our heart beat. There is another rhythm, the craniosacral rhythm, and it is very important to our health, structure, and immune system. The normal rhythm of the craniosacral system is between 10- 12 cycles per minute. Deviation from the normal rhythm can increase the rhythm to as much as 24 cycles per minute.1 However, I also find, that with trauma injuries and musculoskeletal dysfunction, the rhythm can be undetectable or only detectable in some segments and not synchronized throughout the body.
Craniosacral Therapy:
The Craniosacral Rhythm was originally defined by Dr. John Upledger and a team of researchers at Michigan State University in the 1970s. The model explains the palpable, rhythmic expansion and contraction of the craniosacral system.
The Other Rhythm
The brain and spinal cord are surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid transports nutrients, hormones, and peptides. It removes metabolic waste and toxic substances. It serves as a shock absorber, floating the brain to counteract gravity. It even influences respiration and cerebral blood flow, among its many functions. Given all this, it’s easy to see how essential it is for CSF to flow unimpaired. If an area of brain tissue is even partially deprived of optimal CSF motion and flow, that area will be forced into some degree of functional compromise.2 The craniosacral system is intimately related to the nervous, musculoskeletal, vascular, lymphatic, endocrine, and respiratory systems.3
R
ecently Jamie came to my office with complaints of such severe low back pain that she was unable to get a good night’s sleep. She was in her early 70’s and said that, until two years ago, she had only minor problems. Then gradually over time it had become worse. She said that she was recently diagnosed with a disc problem in the lower back, and she had tried injections and medication, but they seemed to give her little relief.
She had not received other therapy or muscular work for the pain. As we talked, she remembered that two years ago, before her problems began, she had fallen in the snow and landed on her tail bone. That could have been the beginning of her problem. I encouraged her to continue with her orthopedist and neurologist but to explore with me the facial, muscular, and craniosacral restriction that could be affecting her pain.
Jamie’s trauma to her tail bone could have caused a disruption of the Craniosacral rhythm. In my palpation exam, I found that her neck was sore, the hip flexors were in spasm, the pelvis was rotated forward, and her back muscles were tight and sore. Her cranial rhythm was fast, and her sacrum rhythm was undetectable. We worked together once a week for 5 weeks to bring her system back into balance. I worked with the muscles, fascia and craniosacral restrictions. Her pain decreased, and her sleep unproved.

What is Craniosacral Therapy? Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a light-touch approach that gently works with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and the fascia. It can create dramatic improvements in your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. In this way, the restrictions of nerve passages are eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord is optimized, and harmony is restored to the body.
Few body structures have more influence over your health and well-being than your central nervous system. And few body systems have more impact on your central nervous system than the craniosacral system --the soft tissues and fluid that protect your brain and spinal cord. Craniosacral therapy releases suture and tissue tensions to allow the entire body to relax and self-correct. A gentle touch --starting with the weight of a nickel-- is used to evaluate your internal environment. Then distinctive light touch techniques are used to release any restrictions and to help your body self correct. By freeing the central nervous system to perform at its best, craniosacral therapy naturally eliminates pain and stress, strengthens your resistance to disease, and enhances your health
and well-being. In addition craniosacral therapy is a bridge technique. While it is a physical technique, it is also a direct way of releasing the emotional energy and associations with past injuries whether physical or emotional. Because craniosacral therapy is so gentle, it can be effective for all ages, from newborns to elders. The conditions that I have most helped by craniosacral therapy are migraines, tensions headaches, chronic neck pain, back pain, stress, tensionrelated disorders, learning disabilities, dyslexia, fibromyalgia, and TMJ syndrome. How to Achieve Natural Beauty Vitamins for Skin, Hair & Nail health: Vitamins C, E, Niacin, Zinc, Selenium, CoEnzyme Q10 and Biotin are powerful anti-oxidants that prevent collagen breakdown. Vitamin K reduces bruising under the eyes. Retinols, derived from Vitamin A, exfoliate the skin and prevent skin cancer in addition to fighting fine lines and discoloration. Alpha lipoic acid and Omega 3 are natural skin plumping agents. Studies show that these vitamins are the most effective when they are all used together, rather than one at a time. Omega 3, Selenium and Biotin are best taken in oral preparations, while Vitamins C, E, Niacin, zinc, Alpha-lipoic acid, Coenzyme Q10 are very effective when used topically.

You are what you Eat: Detoxification Detoxification diets can clear up acne and rosacea, jump start weight loss, reduce inflammation and energize the body. We accumulate toxins in our body through air, food, smoke, pesticides, and medications. Just like your car needs an oil change once in a while, you need to clean out your system. The best way to do this is a detox diet, which is an organic diet devoid of toxic substances. Typically, you should follow the diet for one to four weeks depending on your goals. After a detox program, most people have less inflammation which means they feel less aches and pains. Often people loose 10 to 20 pounds and radiate with vitality.
Natural Skin Tighening Radiofrequency is technology similar to laser treatments that is FDA approved for removing fine lines, wrinkles, cellulite and skin laxity. The beauty of radiofrequency is that it is comfortable, noninvasive and leaves no scars or down-time. The procedure uses heat to break up collagen. As the collagen remodels, skin becomes firmer and tighter. Radiofrequency technology can be used anywhere on the body or the face to turn back the clock naturally.
Hormone Balance Hormone fluctuations are a big part of aging. Thyroid, cortisol, and reproductive hormone imbalances will affect energy level, weight, hair growth, sex drive, skin health, and even mood. A holistic medical doctor can correct imbalances through nutrition, supplements and bio-identical hormone replacement when indicated.
Acupuncture facelift Acupuncturists trained in this technique, insert tiny needles to increase circulation and open blockages of the channels of the face. The treatments decrease wrinkles and sagging naturally without negative side effects. There are many other benefits of acupuncture, including improvement in sleep and energy. Dr. Anne Hermann graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a member of the Medical Honor Society. She completed her residency at Columbia University in New York where she also served as Chief Resident. She received her training in acupuncture at the UCLA Medical School. Dr. Hermann's goal is to help people achieve wellness without medication, but as an MD, she will use medication when necessary. Yoga Pose Salamba Sarvangasana
Salamba = propped up or supported Sarva = whole or all, Anga = limb Asana = seat or posutre Supported all limb posture Have you ever felt that the weight of the whole world was upon your shoulders? Sometimes our ego causes us to “shoulder” responsibilities that are not ours to bear. Practicing the inverted posture shoulderstand can allow us not only to become aware of the burdens we have placed upon ourselves, but also that we are, in fact, capable of carrying those burdens if necessary. Inversions literally cause us to turn our world upside down and look at things from an entirely new perspective. It can shine light on those burdens we need to shoulder and those we need to let go. The benefits of shoulderstand are so vast that it is considered the Queen of Yoga Asana. It has a balancing effect on the whole body. Draining stagnant blood from the legs and abdominal organs; increasing blood circulation to the brain which improves mental functioning; improving respiration, helping to relieve asthma, bronchitis, throat ailments, breathlessness and palpitations; massaging the digestive and elimination systems; and regulating the menstrual cycle and reducing menstrual cramps as well as ovarian cysts are some of shoulderstands’ many benefits. It has a profound effect on the thyroid and parathyroid glands, which not only regulate the rate at which food and oxygen are metabolized but also are very influential on our emotional and mental dispositions. You would not want to practice shou derstand if you are recovering from a neck injury, have arteriosclerosis, cerebral thrombosis, excessively high blood pressure or any disc issues in the cervical spine. Where experienced practitioners may begin lying on a yoga mat, using a folded blanket or two under the neck, shoulders, and back alleviates strain from the neck. The head should be on the floor, hands by your sides. Begin by rolling your shoulders back and squeezing the shoulder blades together. As you exhale, bring your knees into your chest and begin to lift your hips off the mat. Placing your palms on your hips for support, press the elbows firmly down. Using your abdominal muscles, as you exhale slowly raise your legs up to the sky stretching your body from the armpits to
the toes. The palms move down the back close to your shoulder blades. Maintain the curve in the cervical spine, gaze to your chest. Ideally, the back should be almost vertical; the body should be supported by the shoulders and the back of the head with the arms providing stability. Breathe deeply and slowly. See where you can soften and relax into the pose. Watch the breath and notice if any discomfort arises. Discomfort forces the mind to focus. The security of being upright is no longer available. We learn to breath through uncomfortable situations, which will inevitably arise, in our everyday life. Remind yourself that this discomfort will pass. It will not last forever. Change is inevitable. There is always something changing in the body and mind… in life. When you are ready to come out of the pose, fold lengthened legs over the head, place the arms on the floor at your sides and gradually lower the legs down. See if there are some of those burdens you are shouldering that you can leave behind. Completely relax for a few breaths and then move into a counter pose such as matsyasana(fish) or bhujangasana(cobra) or any pose that bends the head gently backwards. Full shoulderstand can be quite challenging, so don’t feel badly if you are not able to get your hips, shoulders, and feet lined up. Ardha Sarvangasana(Half shoulderstand) where the legs are at an angle is always a possibility, as well as using a wall or a chair for support. Autism Treatment Beyond Medications
By William A. Lambos, Ph.D. & Rebecca A. Hopkins, B.Sc.
A
utism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by deficits in language and communication skills, poor social interaction skills, and the presence of repetitive and ritualistic behaviors and interests (often called “stims”). In addition, many autistic individuals also engage in aggressive, self harming, or other negative behaviors. Autism ranges in severity from mild to severe disability, and is therefore often considered a spectrum disorder. Because the current national prevalence rate for autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is 1 in 110 births, or nearly1% of the population of American children, and has increased dramatically in the last 10 years, ASD has become of concern to every American family.
After a diagnosis of ASD or pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) is determined, the next recommendation offered to the family may include medications. The medications prescribed are done so to treat the specific symptoms of autism, not autism itself. Not every case has the same symptoms. Such symptoms often include issues with behavior, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, mood swings, deficits in attention and hyperactivity.
ASDs are not diseases, but rather developmental disorders which will affect the way an individual will develop from infancy to adulthood. A diagnosis of autism or ASD is based upon observing behavior in a structured setting, interviewing the child’s caretakers and teachers, and performing educational and psychological testing.
Many families do not want to place their children on prescription medicine and want alternatives. Concern about the long-term side effects of putting their children on medication during such critical developmental stages fuels their search. Changes in diet, vitamin/mineral supplements and applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapies are popular
Side effects of the medications can be severe, ranging from dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision and sleepiness to more serious effects such as agitation, significant weight gain, movement disorders and in rare cases changes in liver function.
and effective methods for reducing poor behavior, obsessive-compulsive symptoms and increasing attention spans. A new therapy, which is gaining support around the world, is multimodal neurotherapy, including neurofeedback. This less invasive, cutting edge treatment is producing dramatic results in some cases. Done properly, multimodal neurotherapy involves measuring brain activity and identifying areas of disregulation that interfere with cognitive processing and speed and with emotional and social functioning. These problematic areas are then targeted using a variety of different gentle and noninvasive techniques that are aimed at improving the underlying brain mechanisms to improve function. Children that manifest symptoms of autism are commonly found to have brain activity patterns that differ from children who do not have autistic symptoms. These differences can be observed using modern brain mapping technology, called quantitative electroencephalography, or qEEG.

CNS Wellness of Tampa Bay is a local neurotherapy clinic that practices multimodal neurotherapy. They
have had success in improving the condition of ASD children of varying age with many families. Their philosophy in neurotherapy is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the individual so that they are able to deliver the most precise care. Interim brain maps are acquired to show the measureable results of neurotherapy (an example is
shown below). Often, however, the families of children with autism see the changes in behaviors and vocalizations, of treatment, before they see changes in the qEEG maps. CNS Wellness has many partnerships within the community including CARD and CHADD, several schools that specialize in teaching children with ASD or PDD, and ABA therapists. In addition, they participate with nationwide organizations such as Autism Speaks. The CNS Wellness team will be involved in the Walk Now for Autism Speaks, taking place April 16, 2011, to help raise money for autism research. s a business owner, are you finding there are times when you feel unsure or unclear about the next best steps to take to improve your bottom line or to increase market share or determine hiring requirements, etc.? Independent business owners are often spending their time on day to day operations without breathing room or space to think about the future in a planful and systematic way. While strategic planning and budgeting might be routine annual events, (or not), there is rarely time to explore multiple ideas or approaches.

A coach can quickly help you sort out fact from fiction around problems that exist, or around changes you intend to make and can streamline your planning process. You might think that because you are a small business owner, a coach would be overkill, or not necessary. What do you notice about that idea? Does it sound as if it supports you to reach your highest and best set of possibilities?
Often a business coach can speed the process of understanding the options, designing a SMART plan, and taking actions to accomplish your goals.
What might it be like to know that your decisions are being made directly in alignment with your most important objectives?
Most executives in Fortune 500 companies have a coach to provide a sounding board, clarify strategic intentions, assure all elements and resources are aligned to support the successful implementation of those intentions and initiatives, as well supporting decisions and planning for the "people " aspect of any new initiative or change.
What would you experience if you knew you had an objective highly skilled and credentialed professional supporting you to make clear, factual, expedient decisions in a timely and painless fashion?
Coaches act as a leadership catalyst, as an objective sounding board, as a cheerleader for the leader's 24 FEBRUARY 2011 • Tampa Bay Wellness
Consider another way to think about it. If Fortune 500 leaders find value in a coach, why would a small business leader not? Fortune 500 leaders are surrounded by other leaders, consultants, assistants, and often have boards of directors as well. It might just
be more important and valuable for a small business leader to engage a coach than not.
The facts: Executives and business owners alike report that working with a coach: -Improves their confidence in decision making -Increases their effectiveness as a leader of others -Increases the time they have available to actually do what is necessary for success -Improves the bottom line because the resources are appropriately proportioned and directly aligned -Enhances their strategic thinking and problem solving ability -Improves their relationships with employees, there by improving employee engagement
What to consider in choosing a coach: If you are considering a coach, I recommend you seek one who is certified by the ICF and has been successfully coaching business leaders for at least 3 or 4 years. One caveat, many consultants promote themselves as coaches, when truly they are not trained as coaches. www.tampabaywellness.com
They may be very beneficial as a consultant to target specific business problems, and will offer advice and solutions to address the particular concern. A coach is skilled in helping you to discover your own answers and solutions, and to partner with you to plan how you implement and execute your strategy.
Adults, Teens, Couples & Seniors
To determine which kind of support you desire, answer the following questions:
EMDR Therapy
1. Do you want someone to listen to your problem and design a solution for you to implement?
to overcome: • Stress • Depression
2. Would you prefer to have someone specifically experienced in your industry?
3. Would you prefer to have a number of different professionals advising you on specific areas of need?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions you most likely will work best with a consultant rather than a coach. On the other hand, if you can answer "yes" to any of the following questions, you probably will work better with a coach.

1. Would you prefer to explore your own thoughts and ideas to discover the best approach to a particular situation? 2. Would you prefer to establish a relationship in which you are able to explore issues, opportunities, and potential scenarios in general across your enterprise? 3. Are you interested in learning a new approach to problem solving by increasing your awareness of self and your awareness of possible new ways to see might be possible? There is a clear difference between how coaches and consultants are trained as well as what they offer as a service to you. Consultants – Consultants offer to solve problems and provide expertise, information, direction, and advice. Coaches utilize the art of inquiry, as well as other techniques, to help clients tap into their own experience, knowledge, and wisdom for answers. They support clients to discern the facts about a situation to enable their making rational choices, rather than emotional ones. Coaches partner with their clients to design effective action plans, and support the achievement of their best results In many cases, you can find a coach who is specialized by industry or business type. If you are considering a coach or consultant to support your business improvements, contact Dianne for a complimentary conversation to help you decide. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Real satisfaction can be experienced when you consciously choose to give your self and your business the benefit of a coach. It could be the best decision you make in 2011! Now that's Courageous Leadership!
