athlete

Joleen Ross, Sports Writers of America

Alexander Zverev is quickly climbing his way up the rankings in men’s pro tennis.

A

lexander, also known as Sasha, is an 18-yearold tennis player from Hamburg, Germany who has a link to Wesley Chapel. Zverev trains at our very own Saddlebrook Resort, so you may see him in town. This young player is currently ranked 58th in the ATP rankings. He played against Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells in early March, and was not easily defeated. The final score was 6–7(8), 6–0, 7–5. Nadal, who was seeded 4th in that tournament, was quoted as saying, “He’s an amazing, talented player. A future, probably, number one of the world. So it’s a great victory for me. “

Most recently Zverev participated in the Miami Open professional tennis tournament in Key Biscayne Florida during the third week of March. He won his first round match but lost to American Steve Johnson in the second round. Although Johnson won in only two sets, both sets went to tie breaks. The photographs attached are from that match. Alexander’s serve often reaches 135 mph and during this match against Johnson he served 14 aces. Keep your eye on this young player from Germany. It has been two decades since a male German has won a grand slam tournament, the last being Boris Becker in 1996. How much longer until Alexander Zverev is the next grand slam champion? All eyes are on this young athlete with ties to the Tampa Bay Area.•

D

iane McKee received a Lifetime MOSI Membership and celebrated real heroes - teachers - at the start of MOSI’s Superhero Festival. A group of middle school students gathered at Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry on Tuesday, March 22, at 10:15 a.m. expecting a small ceremony to honor their favorite teacher. But they were in for a highflying surprise. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No

-- it’s Mrs. McKee! Their beloved teacher, Hillsborough County and Florida Teacher of the Year Diane McKee, soared in from 50 feet overhead on MOSI’s Sky Trail® Zip Line. A red cape fluttered in the wind behind her, like a superhero, to remind everyone of the real heroes - teachers - who save the day, every day, in classrooms all across our community. Several of her students looked up, amazed, as McKee whizzed by overhead. “That’s my teacher! I can’t believe she’s zip-lining!” eight-grader Nafisa

Tampa teacher soars like a superhero on MOSI’s zip line, surprising her students, on last day as Hillsborough’s Teacher of the Year Uddin said. “She looks like a superhero or like Harry Potter when he’s playing quidditch.” The students’ reactions went from surprised to excited as McKee received a Lifetime MOSI Membership to honor her dedication to Florida’s children. That Lifetime MOSI Membership was dramatically presented up, up, and away 15 feet above the ground, in a ceremony on the Sky Trail® Ropes Course. McKee then came down to ground level to visit with the students who had come to cheer her on. “It was wonderful! I just wanted to throw my hands up in the air and let my feet go. It was an exhilarating experience,” McKee said. The nine students who witnessed this first-of-its-kind ceremony came from Tampa’s Williams Middle Magnet School, where McKee teaches 8th grade English.

March 22 was McKee’s final full day as Hillsborough County’s Teacher of the Year; the banquet naming a new honoree took place on March 23. This past July, McKee was also named the statewide Florida Department of Education-Macy’s Teacher of the Year, and she will continue in that role as an ambassador for teaching until July 2016. “I can’t wait to get back in the classroom, because really the students are what it’s all about,” McKee said. McKee’s heroic flight comes just before MOSI’s month-long Superhero Festival, which began with Opening Weekend of the new film Batman vs. Superman in the Florida Hospital IMAX DOME Theatre March 24th, and ends with Crime Fighters Weekend April 16 and 17, when police, fire, and EMS workers get free admission to MOSI and all guests can see and touch real crime fighting vehicles and technology.•

et’s talk about Moms. It seems like every time we turn around, another holiday is upon us. May 8th is no exception with Mother’s Day fast approaching. Another holiday means another boost to the economy because we are all conditioned to buy gifts for every occasion. Now, being a mom myself, I must say I do like receiving gifts on this day. Every other holiday I don’t really care but Mother’s Day is special when you’re a Mom. When my littles give me cards & gifts to assure me I’m doing something right {even when I feel like I’m doing it all wrong} my heart just melts. Being a Mom is complicated. Why did no one ever inform us how hard it actually is? And God only knows why no one ever told us that when you have more than one child that sibling rivalry will push you to the edge and sometimes you may fall off and become what I refer to as “Psycho Mom”. Please tell me I’m not the only one that experiences this? On the other hand, being a Mom, despite all the challenges, is a huge blessing. There is no higher paying job than receiving pure love from your children. In our everyday life, mommy hood is hectic. As moms, we wear a million hats. I can’t even tell you how many

Being a mom myself now, I totally get it! Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, can prepare us for being moms. Life as we knew it is over but we now have these amazing little people looking up to us every moment for help, guidance, positivity, laughs & unconditional love. I

you this Mother’s Day? Motherhood is a choice we make every day to put someone else’s happiness and well-being before our own, teach the hard lessons and do the right thing…even when we’re not sure what the right thing is… and to forgive ourselves over and over again when everything doesn’t turn out as planned. To all the moms reading this… YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB! And you deserve to be celebrated EVERY day

I guarantee a hand-written, heartfelt card will mean more to her than anything but some other gift ideas include: y A piece of jewelry y A candle in her favorite scent y A new handbag in a fun spring color y A pair of new sunglasses since summer is around the corner y A picture frame with your favorite picture of you and her always say there is no manual to parenthood and there is no way to be a “perfect” mom but a million ways to be a good one. What does your Mom mean to you? She gave you life. She taught you right from wrong. She taught you to treat others the way you want to be treated. She fed you, kissed your boo-boo’s, helped you with homework, nurtured you, guided you, believed in you & most importantly, loved you (and still does!). How will you let her know what she means to

but especially on Mother’s Day. Being a Mom is the hardest job in the world but it is definitely the most fulfilling. To MY mom, words can’t explain how much I admire you, thank you & love you. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing, beautiful moms out there who are raising world changers! • The gifts listed/pictured are just a few of the things you can discover at Tate & Tilly (14349 N. April 15th - April 24th TECO Theater www.strazcenter.com The Brothers Grimm hit the stage with an inspiring fairytale about wishes, family and the consequences from the choices we make. Presented by student performers in grades 5-12, your favorite characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Wicked Witch— meet and interact in this original story. The premise of this musical is on a baker and his wife who desperately wishes to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes that his old cow would just give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changing fairytales forever. If you enjoyed Into the Woods, a 2014 movie directed by Rob Marshall starring well-known names such as Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep, than you are bound to love this fairy tale narrated and acted out by children.

mani Warden, Real Estate Advisor with RE/MAX Capital Realty in New Tampa has 19 years of Real Estate experience. She’s full time and 24/7 with support of her team that includes three other licensed Realtors. For Amani, the successful marketing of a home is a multi-faceted process that encompasses home preparation, pricing, presentation/staging, negotiation, and strategic advertising and networking. Amani shares. “When I list a home, I work with a professional stager and a professional photographer to capture all the positive attributes of the home. Also highlighting the neighborhood and its amenities.” All these activities are undertaken with one aim: to maximize your home’s market exposure, and with it the number of showings and offers you get so that you ultimately sell for top market value. Amani has the knowledge, expertise and resources to

implement a plan that will effectively coordinate all of these activities so you do just that. In order to maximize the impact of these preparation and pricing strategies, your home needs to be effectively exposed to the marketplace through a variety of advertising media. Amani utilizes the internet, including virtual tours and interactive maps on REMAX.com, globalRemax. com, Zillow.com, Trulia. com, REALTOR.com, social media, and direct contact with other REALTORS®, which are the main sources of home information for buyers. Other sources used are yard signs, open houses, newspaper and real estate magazine ads, and television. An interesting phenomenon is the yard sign’s role. Buyers who call on a yard sign already have convinced themselves that they like the neighborhood, street - even your front yard. Whether you’re selling a home or purchasing a home, it’s more important than ever to have the right realtor on your side. It will save you thousands.•

ore than 70 riders and their horses rode to support Gulfside Hospice at the Ride for Hospice on March 19th. This year marks the eighth time that the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse hosted the Ride for Hospice to benefit Gulfside Hospice. This year, more than $21,000 was raised. A total of more than $145,000 has been raised since the event began. All proceeds go to support patient care and bereavement services to anyone in Pasco County. The top fundraiser for the Ride for Hospice was once again Sue Touchston with $4,176. In second place was Ashlyn Head with $1,183. Both Touchton and Head have donated hundreds of hours and raised thousands of dollars for Gulfside Hospice since the Ride for Hospice began in 2009. After the Ride for Hospice, participants and the public attended Paulie Palooza, an all-day music festival, held also at Skydive City. The Palooza included 11 local bands, vendors, silent auctions, prize drawings and more. The Paulie Palooza was started by Paul Correia after his father passed away on Gulfside Hospice’s services. He wanted to give back to Gulfside and created Paulie Palooza around his

birthday to raise money for Gulfside. “The reason that this event has been successful year after year is because of the dedication of the Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. Their team is truly passionate about our cause, and we at Gulfside are tremendously grateful for our friendship with them and Paul,” said Linda Ward, president and CEO of Gulfside Hospice & Pasco Palliative Care. “The money raised from both events truly makes a difference in enabling Gulfside to take care of so many patients and provide services to anyone in Pasco County, regardless of their ability to pay.” The Ride for Hospice & Paulie Palooza sponsors included:

· Mare: O2 Solutions · Colt Sponsors: CarePlus Health Plans, Farmers Feed Depot, MedFleet, Inc., Michels & Lundquist Funeral Home, Norm & Sons Tire & Automotive Repair, and Pasco Sheriff’s Charities, Inc · Filly Sponsors: Bay Area Environmental Services, Blue Skies Equine Veterinary Services, Borrell Electric Co. The Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Posse has been serving the citizens of Pasco County since 1995. All Posse members must pass and maintain several qualification standards to enable horse and rider to safely work in close contact with the public. The Pasco Sheriff’s Mounted Unit (comprised of sworn deputies) and the Pasco County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse (comprised of civilian volunteers) are part of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office. Applications are being accepted for riders and ground assistants. For more information, visit www. pascoposse.com.•

The live bands drew a crowd at the Paulie Palooza all-day music festival at SkyDive City in Zephyrhills. The event featured music, silent auction, vendors and more.

Sue Touchston, was once again recognized this year as the event’s top fundraiser. Touchston brought in $4,176, all of which will go to help Gulfside Hospice provide patient care for Pasco County residents.

ARTISTS'

SPOTLIGHT

Sweets So Chic, LLC Michelle Fusco Owner, Artist & Pastry Chef Six years ago insurance agent, Michelle Fusco, was looking out her office window watching the traffic drive by. She thought to herself, “I wish I was in one of those cars; going anywhere but here.” She knew then, something had to change. She couldn’t continue to live her life doing something that was uninspiring and gave her no joy. Very soon after that, while watching a competitive dessert making t.v. show, she was inspired to make a cake of her own. She figured she is a creative woman, with several artistic talents… how hard can a cake be? After making her first cake, she was hooked. Knowing this is what she wanted to do, an idea was born: She could leave her tax job and build a business making beautiful and delicious cakes for people. And boy did she! Yes, she was full of fear and self-doubt, but with the loving support off her family and friends, she took the leap of faith and quit her job. Her biggest cheerleader (& husband) began telling everyone he knew about his wife’s incredible new-found talent & passion of making cakes and other delicious desserts. She is quickly building a reputation of creating beautifully creative and delicious edibles. You can find her at www.facebook.com/SweetsSoChic,LLC. •

PMK Woodworking Phil Kunze Owner, Artist & Craftsman Standing in his workshop barefoot, smiling ear to ear, and surrounded by sawdust and surfboards, I knew this interview would be awesomely different. Like most artists, Phil Kunze is a man of many talents and interests, which can make career hunting a tedious and long journey after college. After several jobs in photography, t-shirt design, insurance & financial planning, Phil discovered his love of wood working. Three years ago, after moving into their new home in Wesley Chapel, Phil’s wife had her eyes on the infamous Pottery Barn farmhouse dining table. Phil bought a circular saw and was determined to make the table his wife really wanted. Not only did he build a farmhouse table, but he discovered that he truly loves building. After his wife saw his woodworking skills, she quickly made a list of all the projects she wanted him to build. And the more he built, the more he loved it. It didn’t take long for him to realize that this was his true calling. PMK Woodworking was soon established and he was quickly taking orders. He stepped out on faith that this new adventure would work and be successful enough to provide for his family. Phil says that he takes great pride & satisfaction in developing his own style; and that his constant need for perfection has helped him become a better craftsman and a better artist. He has been full time with his business for 8 months now, and continues to “seek God to guide his business and its success.” You can find Phil on Facebook at www.facebook.com/PMKWoodworking.•

T’Weiss As Nice Karen Weiss Owner, Artist & Crafter Upon walking into her home with my 3 sons, I felt I knew Michael & Karen Weiss almost instantly. Her pulled-together & stylish decor, along with their smiles and laid back attitude, we immediately felt in awe and at home. Located near the entrance of her home is her studio where much of her artistic magic happens. In early 2015 Karen realized now that her 3 girls are older, she wanted to go back to work and she had the freedom to do anything she wanted to do. Her husband, Michael, encouraged her to pursue something that not only made money, but most importantly made her happy; to do something she truly loved doing. Crafting and repurposing materials her whole life made the decision easy and helped direct her in creating T’Weiss As Nice; a company that is a little classy, a little beachy, a little farmhouse rustic, and whole lot of beauty. How many times have you seen cool projects on Pinterest or Etsy and thought to yourself, “I can do that!” And before long, you have a rather lengthy list of cool projects you haven't done (don’t worry, we’ve all been there). Well Karen is the opposite of that! Anything she sees and wants to make, she does it! She also has the ability to create custom, unique designs as well. If while scrolling through Wesley Chapel Facebook sites, you have seen cool and creative signs, wreathes and chalkboards, good chances are they are Karen’s creations. But she doesn’t just sell online. She also hosts in-home craft parties, as well as being featured in vintage shops in the area. And if you have your own idea, but not really a DIYer, Karen enjoys collaborating with clients to make their visions a reality. And as a bonus, many of her clients have become friends and/or repeat customers. I’d say this is a fabulous start to owning her own business doing what she loves. You can find Karen on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TweissAsNice. •

arry Hopman had a considerable impact on tennis worldwide and indeed in Australia as the winningest Davis Cup coach in history. He significantly altered the manner in which tennis was played while establishing new levels of fitness for competitive players. The obvious success of his methods set new standards and practices which have continued throughout the world to this day, leveling international tennis across the board. Hopman instituted many practice routines which are still utilized by his devoted coaches who were lucky enough to be under his tutelage. His emphasis upon conditioned reflexes ensured that all players under his care developed sharp reflexes and great volleying skills. Hopman’s record of producing great doubles players is unparalleled in the history of the game. The Hopman method of coaching is a unique system of challenging players with a variety of balls in many given and difficult situations. Full-time students who reside on the property aspire to the collegiate level and beyond and have been placed at such notable colleges as Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Emory, Georgetown, John Hopkins, Ohio State, Pepperdine, West Point, Miami, and South Florida. Saddlebrook not only benefits their training guests, but the large tournaments and events, and the tennis camps keep the local community businesses thriving. Recently in 2015, approximately 5,400 adults came to Saddlebrook in search of tennis and golf training. Once training is completed for the day, guests visit the area searching for things to do and places to eat. This brings economic commerce into the area. D

iabetes is a serious disease and is not selective when it comes to its victims. Approximately 29.1 million people have diabetes, which is about one out of every 11 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Diabetes is a serious health concern throughout the country and right here in our community.

Diabetes causes your blood glucose levels to shoot way above normal and wreaks havoc with your health. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin as well as it should. Once sugar levels build up in your blood, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, and loss of feet or legs. The good news is, diabetes is a controllable disease. Those suffering from diabetes can control and manage it, and others can reduce or avoid the presence of diabetes by living a healthy lifestyle and being

proactive. You can start with the following steps: • Get educated on

Well On Your Way, a 12week diabetes intervention program that uses whole-health principles to manage diabetes through a multi-dimensional approach. This program is open to the community at large and includes sessions with an exercise physiologist and a registered dietitian and a free 12-week membership to the Health & Wellness Center. The program will help participants control their diabetes and improve their current and future well-being by helping create healthier lifestyle patterns.•

There is new, local program that can help and thanks to a grant, and it is completely free. The Health & Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has launched

Limit saturated and trans-fats, salt, sugar and protein; increase nonstarchy vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats and fruits. Ingredients 1 can garbanzo beans, drained 1 tablespoon peanut oil 1 head broccoli, separated into bit size pieces 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon ginger paste 1 can coconut milk (I used regular, but lite works great) 3 tablespoons red curry paste (or more if you like heat) 1 heaping tablespoon natural peanut butter ½ tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in 2 tablespoons cold water

Instructions

Vegan Coconut Curry

In a medium size pan over medium-high heat add peanut peanut oil and saute the broccoli, garlic and ginger. After a few minutes, add the coconut milk and let simmer for 5-8 minutes. The broccoli should soften but still be tender-crisp. Add the beans and curry paste to the pan and stir it until it combines with the coconut milk. Bring to a slight boil and add the cornstarch. Boil for about a minute, then reduce heat and let cool slightly (about another 2 to three minutes). Sauce will thicken as the mixture cools. BY JULIE BAZIN www.Veggiedogsblog.wordpress.com
