Homes For Our Troops to kick off building of home for injured Marine in Wesley Chapel
T
he national nonprofit organization, Homes For Our Troops (HFOT) will kick off the building of a specially adapted home for Marine Corporal Timothy Read on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019. Cpl Read was injured while serving in Afghanistan. The event will be held at Texas Roadhouse, 26409 Silver Maple Pkwy, Wesley Chapel, FL 33544 at 10 a.m. (Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m.) The public is welcome to attend. Texas Roadhouse, one of HFOT’s National Corporate Partners, will be providing lunch following the ceremony. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP at www.hfotusa.org/read. On Oct. 15, 2010, Cpl Read was on patrol with the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines in Marjah, Afghanistan, when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast resulted in the loss of his left leg and other injuries. The home being built for Timothy will feature more than 40 major special adaptations such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops. The home will also alleviate the mobility and safety issues associated with a traditional home, including navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds, or reaching for cabinets that are too high. HFOT has built over 270 homes since the organization’s inception in 2004. To find out more on how to get involved or make a donation visit www.hfotusa.org.

Pasco Middle School Principal Dee Dee Johnson, Holly Mickler, and Superintendent Kurt Browning. _____________________________________________________________
Holly Mickler Named Pasco Teacher of the Year Holly Mickler, Pasco Middle School AVID teacher and
coordinator, received the surprise news this morning while judging science fair projects that she is Pasco County Schools Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Kurt Browning, Assistant Superintendent for Middle Schools Marcy Hetzler-Nettles, School Board Member Megan Harding, Pasco Middle School Principal Dee Dee Johnson, Pasco Education Foundation Executive Director Stacey Capogrosso, and United School Employees of Pasco President Don Peace announced the news and presented Ms. Mickler with balloons, flowers, and a tin of cookies. “This is quite an honor; I’m a little overwhelmed right now!” said Mrs. Mickler, as students whose science fair projects she was judging clapped and cheered. Mrs. Mickler has taught at Pasco Middle School for 14 years. She has a Bachelors’ Degree in Special Education from Appalachian State University, and earned the Best and Brightest bonus three times. She believes that intentionally planned flexibility is what turns good teachers into great teachers. Her end goal shifts with the needs of her students and her mantra is, “Do what we gotta do!” to change, protect, and save futures. Mrs. Mickler believes that non-academic skills such as perseverance, time management, curiosity, manners, and character should be taught in addition to academic skills. When she is not teaching, Mrs. Mickler works with her husband in their prison ministry, Hostage of Hope Ministries, where they supply inmates with various personal items and transcribe sermons from Tampa Bay Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Mickler will be honored with other employees of the year at a dinner ceremony on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. The district also will nominate her for Florida Teacher of the Year. onnoisseurs of beers, the lovers of suds, the admirers of hops, the enumerated with IPAs and those swooning over stouts — they will travel for the great batch of brew. Brew it and they will come. They will search far and wide for the next great craft beer brewery, hoping for a diamond in the rough of great beer and that the ambiance was worth the trip. Luckily, there’s no shortage of craft beer breweries in Florida — there’s nearly 250 of those, ranking it 10th in the US as of 2017. And even more luckily for the local thirsty, there are seven craft beer breweries spread across Pasco County with plans for more to spring up sooner rather than later. “It’s awesome though,” says Brian Hackman, owner and founder of Cotee River Brewing Co. in New Port Richey, “because we feed off each other. We’ll recommend each other to customers so its great for our community and all of Pasco. And, usually, the response is very good.” No longer a niche drink, the popularity of craft beer, and brew pubs and bars that brew and serve their own brand, is growing at a lightning pace. While only a handful of places distribute their beer (i.e. Big Storm), many share with each other to have a guest beer on tap.
“People will travel for a beer or place either they read about or heard about by word of mouth,” says Jim Bishop, owner and founder of Infusion Brewing Co. in New Port Richey. “If we haven’t already, we’re going to create a destination for people to explore and try new beers because a lot of people want something more than your average beer.” “That folks like us and come over to see us with everything that is now available around here speaks volumes of what people are looking for in the area,” adds Joe Traina, one of the owners and founders of In The Loop Brewing in Land O’ Lakes. “Locals have really embraced not only us, but all the other local breweries, and I think that’s because people what to drink a great beer at a great place.” Even if Pasco County is playing a bit of catch up. “I think Pasco has been a little slow to the party,” says Robert Hilferding, owner and founder of Zephyrhills Brewing Co. “There’s no real explanation to it, but word of mouth has helped and so has trying new things — because us real brewers are all about trying new things. So we are beginning to show the people of Pasco what craft beer is all about.”

Big Storm Brewing Co. 2330 Success Dr Odessa, FL Bigstormbrewery.com
THE POUR Big Storm is the most established and well known of beers brewed in Pasco, but it also has a taproom and brewery in Pinellas, plus another taproom in Cape Coral. Big Storm does distribute its beers and has won several awards — including 2016’s Best Florida Beer Championship with their Oktoberfest Marzen Lager — since its establishment in 2012 by Mike Bishop.
Cotee River Brewing Co. 5760 Main St New Port Richey, FL Coteeriverbrewing.com
THE POUR The newest of the breweries in Pasco (has been open only four months), Brian Hackman has established the first brewery located in historic downtown New Port Richey, which is seeing a revival with new restaurants and shops. Hackman also proudly boasts that their first beer, Market Fresh Wheat, sold out on the first day.

Brew All this talk about craft beer made us thirsty, so we decided to check out the seven craft beer brewing companies in Pasco County. Here’s a rundown of what’s on tap ...
Escape Brewing Co. 9945 Trinity Blvd Trinity, FL Escapebrewingcompany.com
THE POUR Longtime friends Matt Thompson and John McGregor opened Escape in 2015, but since then have grown exponentially and distribute their beer locally, as well. The brewery became their “escape” from corporate America. Beer mainstays here are the Goofy Footed Wheat Ale and the Other West Coast IPA. VOLUME VI • ISSUE I
Infusion Brewing Co. 7813 Mitchell Blvd New Port Richey, FL facebook.com/ InfusionBrewingCo
THE POUR The fourth — and definitely not last — of the craft beer breweries on Pasco’s west side, Jim Bishop celebrates his two year anniversary this month. While hosting trivia nights and other fun events, Bishop loves experimenting with new blends, but Skiffy Jippy, a chocolate peanut butter porter, and Pep In Yo’ Step, a jalapeno double IPA, are two tasty beers.
In The Loop Brewing 3338 Land O’ Lakes Blvd Land O’ Lakes, FL Intheloopbrewingcompany.com
THE POUR In The Loop, founded by Jim Traina, Mark Pizzurro and Peter Abreut, have carved themselves arguably one of the beer garden outdoor seating in the area, as it has a great view of Lake Padgett. In The Loop is still a small operation, but is growing every day as its taproom, located in an renovated two-story house, keeps expanding, as does the business thanks to word of mouth and popular beer events.
Zephyrhills Brewing Co. 38530 5th Ave Zephyrhills, FL Zbcbeer.com
THE POUR The only craft beer brewery — for now — on Pasco’s east side, founder Robert Hilferding is enjoying his retirement by brewing new, unique and tasty beers in downtown Zephyrhills. ZBC has become a popular place for trivia, live music and expanding locals palate for craft beer. Hilferding was the 2014 AHA National Homebrewer of the Year and while he’s not the head brewer at ZBC, do expect an Wesley Chapel Magazine 15 ever-changing beer menu with each visit.
A Tall Tail
A local man has invented a new way to help teach kids to ride their bikes in the hope of starting a new trend in bicycle safety. Brad Boger was just too tall. He was teaching his daughter, Kylie, to ride a bike and frustration, for both of them, was setting in. “You have to bend over to reach the seat of the bike,” Brad says. “Then you’re running bent over or if you hold them, they lean on you and and they never learn how ride. “Teaching my kids to ride was never a pleasant experience nor was it when I learned to ride a bike. They get scared and quit on you, and my daughter was doing just that and wanted to give up because we were getting pretty frustrated, bloodied and bruised up.” Instead of giving up, Brad, a Land O’ Lakes resident, longtime general contractor and owner of Golf Coast Construction in Lutz, decided to find a way to make it easier on both him and his daughter. In a matter of hours, Brad designed and constructed the Bike Tail, a simple device that attaches universally to any bike seat and acts as an extended handle as a way for parents to help guide their child’s path with ease. “After I made this and put it on her bike,” Brad adds, “she learned in a day.” The Bike Tail can be used with or without training wheels. While training wheels provides a safety net for a child being wobbly, the Bike Tail allows the parent to balance the child’s bike or give a little nudge while jogging behind the bike. It even allows the parent to stop the bike by grabbing the handle. And, similar to training wheels, the Bike Tail provides confidence to the child, as they know there is still a safety net. Now, Brad has been marketing and selling the Bike Tail locally, however, the goal is to change the way children learn to ride bikes. “It used to be about setting the kids loose, then they’re going crash,” Brad adds, “and they’re going to get discouraged, put the bike in the garage and don’t want to do it anymore. This will give them the confidence to keep trying until they get it.” The Bike Tail sells for $29 and is available for purchase at biketail.com or call 1-833-Bik-Tail.

Six Pack MOD Pizza
2227 Sun Vista Dr, Lutz Yelp Rating: 4.5 The Cut: MOD boasts artisan-style pizza made fresh and quickly on what they lovingly refer to as an assembly line. This is the first MOD location in the Tampa Bay area, as MOD is the original superfast pizza chain that started in Seattle in 2008. Have To Try This: The Calexico — this pizza features mozzarella, gorgonzola, chicken, jalapenos, hot buffalo sauce on red sauce. Careful. It’s spicy.
Mellow Mushroom
25662 Sierra, C St, Lutz Yelp Rating: 4 The Cut: Mellow Mushroom makes it debut in Pasco County and, as with its other locations, boasts funky, art-filled pizzas, craft beers, calzones and creative stone-baked pizzas. This chain has always taken pride in its psychedelic style and brand. Have To Try This: Kosmic Karma — mellow red sauce base with feta cheese, mozzarella, spinach, sun-dried roasted tomatoes and roma tomatoes. Finished with a pesto swirl. Trippy. LISTEN Local to a
We took a few moments to chat with a one of the area’s popular local figures and ask them what they’re up to, where they’re going — even what’s new.
ocal football coach and teacher Bill Browning has been on the sidelines and in the classroom for 42 years, but now, he knows its time. He’s already stepped away from his coaching duties of Sunlake High’s football team in Land O’ Lakes and plans to retire in about a year. After 12 years of coaching at Sunlake — a school he’s been at since its opening in 2007 — Browning, 63, has compiled a 73-53 record, had seven-straight winning seasons and four playoff appearances. All this comes as part of his 29 years coaching at various schools, including winning 92 games combined coaching Springstead and Hernando. Browning even helped found the Pasco County All-Star Football game a few years ago.
terrible. So turning two programs around and starting one to make it successful, on the whole, that’s a good feeling because every program I’ve been at, I’ve left it in a better place then when I took over.
Mike Camunas: So, after coaching and teaching for all those years, it’s just time to retire?
MC: What’s it going to be like not being called ‘coach’ anymore?
Bill Browning: Yeah, yeah. When you know it’s time, its time. It’s time to do some other things. MC: What kind of other things do you have planned? BB: Travel. Enjoy the grandkids — see some places that I’ve always wanted to see. In the Fall, I’d like to go see some college football stadiums on a Saturday. Notre Dame is definitely up there, or Clemson or LSU where the venue is just really awesome. I’m a big (Chicago) Cubs fan, so I’d love to get to Wrigley. MC: With a long list of accomplishments, is there something that stands out to you during your career? BB: There’s not one thing total, but overall all the things. I got to Springstead and was able to turn that program around and then went to Hernando, which had fallen on hard times, and turned that around. Then starting (the program here at) Sunlake with no senior class, the first two years we were 1-19, so we were

MC: You’ve seen a lot of young men and women go on and be successful in college and life and that must be satisfying. BB: I’ve got a lot of guys I’ve coached or coached with me that are now coaching somewhere and being successful, like Mark Kantor, who played for me at Springstead and now is doing well coaching Wiregrass Ranch. Not everyone goes on to play in college, so it’s about helping them with life skills and now that I’ve retired, I’ve had a lot of people come out of the woodwork to thank me. You just hope you can be a positive role model.
BB: I’ll probably still answer to coach (laughs). My middle daughter, Brooke, started calling me ‘Coach Dad’ because she realized I would respond faster to that, so sometimes I go by that, too. MC: How hard is it going to be to watch from the stands next year? BB: I’m ready, so I think I’ll be okay with it. I’ll be able to sit back and second guess everyone (laughs), but I said it was time. I’m sure I’ll be out there on Friday nights (for games). … There’s going to be a transition period, for sure, and days I miss it, but it’s time to move on to another chapter in life. I’ve spent so much time on athletic fields and gyms, so it’s time I started enjoying a few things for myself.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Massage helps to rejuvenate your mind, There
body and spirit allowing for natural balance
are a fair number of massage therapists available; the challenge is finding the therapist that's right for you as their skills, strengths and techniques vary. Some just have a unique, intuitive way of adjusting to you and your body. They get a “feel” for what works best for you. Once you've discovered the perfect therapist you have found an experience that transcends all the troubles and stress in your life. It’s a moving meditation that takes you away. It melts your body and your mind while releasing endorphins. I’m not sure about the spiritual side but the mind and body become tunedin, awakened and more alive. Of course, there is the purely therapeutic side to massage also. Along with diet and exercise, massage is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself!
BY KEITH MATTER
I owned a massage establishment in Carrollwood. We employed 14 therapists where I was able to experience a variety of different massage styles along with the therapist’s strengths and weaknesses. I personally prefer the Swedish style of massage with a bit of deep tissue. A number of years ago I found a therapist, Jennifer Bodanza, whom for me has all the innate qualities necessary to provide the best in massage. She has all the technical training, various styles, strength and intuitive insights that a therapist needs to alter your outlook on life. Her husband is a chiropractor, so I’m sure there is collaborative learning that assists in providing therapeutic and relaxing sessions. Jennifer has recently set up shop in Wesley Chapel. Her business, Natural Balance Massage, is located off Bruce B Downs just North of the Florida Hospital, between 56 and 54. I would highly recommend Jennifer to see if she may be the therapist that is in sync with you. ________________________________________________________ Jennifer Bodanza, is a native of Florida, graduated from the University Of Florida. She’s always had a passion for health, the body and massage so decided to pursue massage therapy. She's been working as a massage therapist for the past 17 years. After years of working for others in busy spas or with her husband in their chiropractic business she had a vision of something quainter and more tranquil. With the help of Brian VanAmburg owner of VanAmburg Construction her vision of a quiet, peaceful spot in nature was brought to life indoors. Natural Balance Massage provides that serene space ideal for relaxation she was hoping to achieve. Natural Balance Massage believes in the importance of massage, not just to therapeutically manage pain and stress but also as a preventive measure through maintenance care. Jennifer specializes in Deep tissue and Neuromuscular Therapy while also offering a variety of other healing modalities easily customized to meet individual needs. Swedish, Pregnancy and Sports massage are also available. All sessions are tailored specifically to each client, which often changes from day to day.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Fitting In Your Fitness It’s a usual staple this time of year: as the calendar rolls over, you’re looking to get back and shape and lose that holiday weight. So we asked a local OrangeTheory Fitness coach to share some helpful fitness and exercise tips that will help you get a new you in the new year.
BY MEGAN ROLFES MEGAN IS AN INSTRUCTOR AT BOTH ORANGE THEORY FITNESS IN NEW TAMPA AND WIREGRASS RANCH. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THOSE LOCATIONS, CALL (813) 774-3488 (NT) OR (813) 235-0664 (WR).
Change mindset when it comes to your nutrition and “diet”
Most people focus on what they can’t have. Instead focus on adding in (i.e. drink more water, eat more vegetables). By adding in more healthy foods, you’ll be less hungry because of the additional fiber and won’t need the processed, less healthy foods. On the same note: avoid liquid calories and drink more water. The human body is 60% water — so refuel.
Include weight training with your usual cardio
Most people only run or cycle expecting quick results. Strength training should not be ignored. It uses both aerobic and anaerobic energy, meaning it burns calories both during and after your workout. Upon finishing a run, the calorie burn stops when you stop running. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism.
Find exercise you enjoy, not what you think you “need” to do
Put a toy basketball hoop up at the office, play hide and seek with your kids, join an adult sports league. The more fun you have, the more you’re likely to repeat the activity.
Treat working out as an appointment
You wouldn’t cancel your massage appointment, would you? Fitness is deeply beneficial to your body and long-term health. One of the most common reasons for not working out is lack of time. But consider all the minutes we spend on social media or binge watching Netflix. You don’t need to change your whole schedule, but save 30-60 minutes at least 3-4 times a week to get your body moving.
Find a support group
Ask your family and friends for support. Get them to join you in some healthful activities. Take a walk/jog around a local lake. Get a workout buddy. You’re less likely to cancel when someone else is relying on you. Plus, it’s more fun to exercise with friends!
Set small goals along side your big goals
Maybe you want to lose 20 pounds, but celebrate other victories on your journey. Keep a consistent sleep schedule so you’re ready for that early-morning workout. Drink eight glasses of water every day for a week. Eat salad three times a week for lunch. Run a full mile without stopping.
Health and wellness is a journey, not a destination
Therefore, consistency is key. Don’t set unrealistic expectations — start with small sustainable changes. Start with one or two workouts a week. The following week, add in another. Stay positive. Staying consistent is a victory in itself. If the scale is not moving as quickly as you’d like, focus on smaller benefits: increased energy, better sleep, less stress, increased confidence, overall health, etc. It’s not about how challenging your goals are, it’s about adding in new, positive actions to help you achieve those goals over time.

O
RELATIONSHIPS
Swipe Right, Swipe Left…
nline dating as a 44 year old man gave me a unique window into the modern dynamics between men and women, how attraction works, and even led me to question the role of marriage if one is past the age of raising a family. I went from dating too many women (quantity) to searching for specific characteristics and dating less, but with people who shared my values (quality). My most profound realization was that if I was going to find someone amazing to share my life with, I would have to up MY game and work on the parts of my life that weren’t as good as they could be. I had been paying off debt for a long time, but I doubled down and lived on HALF of my income in 2018. My credit score went above 800! No one wants to date someone with messy finances. Being broke is not attractive! As a man I realized that focusing on my purpose and mission in life is far more attractive than making dating my focus. I’m a shareholder in Tampa Bay Solar, so I focused on building our sales team up to $1 million per month in sales. As our team grew I invested time in helping others find success, something I find deeply satisfying on a spiritual level. I started to do yoga and practice intermittent fasting, not only for longevity, but also for weight loss. I started spending more time in the pool, swimming laps. I had neglected my health after my marriage ended, so health became my hobby and I began to slim down and feel better. People date for certain reasons, some folks just date to
see “what they can get” from a partner either financially or sexually. I went in the opposite direction, and began intentionally looking for long term companionship, someone that I could really get to know over a lifetime. Looking at relationships from a selfish (or scarcity) perspective is transactional, real love comes from a place of abundance within ourselves. The more you love others the more that love multiplies and comes back to you, so I started to approach every date from the viewpoint of “How can I add value to this other person, how can I show them a nice time?” I had been reading up on leadership and I decided to adopt a personal policy of radical character and integrity. In doing this I realized that I could only date someone if they also held integrity and character as a core virtue. This meant that my pool of potential dates was much more limited, but I no longer wasted time with a woman of poor character or dicey integrity. I would rather be single for a longer period of time, yet ultimately find someone of high quality and character to spend my life with. Of course, this has just been my experience out there in the dating universe of Tampa Bay, if you’re single I would encourage you to get out there, have a glass of wine with people you find interesting and also look inward to see what you can work on yourself. If you happen to be single for a year or two use that time to better your health, your finances, your faith. I’m still single, but as we launch into 2019 I’m optimistic about eventually finding the right person in my life, while also understanding that the right person won’t come along until the right time! Thanks for reading! Ben Alexander

Lawn &
Garden
February, 2019
What to Plant
Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that perform better in the cooler months include petunia, pansy, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Protect from frosts and freezing temperatures. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Provide adequate water for establishment and protect from cold weather with mulch. Some examples include Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Azaleas: With azaleas in full bloom this month, now is a great time to select varieties to add to the landscape. Vegetables: Numerous warm- and coolseason vegetables can be planted this month. Protect cold-tender veggies if a frost or freeze is predicted.
What to Do
Palms: Give cold-damaged palms proper care to encourage their recovery. Citrus: Check citrus trees for scab disease. Apply a copper fungicide when new leaves appear and again when two-thirds of the flower blossoms have fallen. Roses: Prune roses this month to remove damaged canes and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin 8–9 weeks after pruning. Shrubs: Fertilize shrubs by spreading fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and watering it in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Lawn: Apply a preemergence weed killer (not a "weed and feed") to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm-season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4–5 days. Timing is important for good control. Citrus and other fruit trees: Fertilize now if not done in January. Frequency and amount of fertilization depend on the age of the tree.
