We invited parents to share their experiences and insights about UPCA, adding a personal touch to our story. Natalie: A Mom of two kids at UPCA; 3rd and 5th grades Why have you chosen UPCA for your school? Answer: Union Park Charter Academy is an A-rated school, keenly aware of the future challenges our children will face in their careers. The technology education offered from Kindergarten to 8th grade is exceptional, surpassing what many other schools provide. The school takes great pride in creating an inclusive environment, where respect for all individuals is a cornerstone. With a diverse faculty and staff, each child's unique needs are not just heard but actively addressed. What does UPCA do to positively impact your student(s)?

Answer: Union Park Charter Academy stands out not just for its excellent, challenging curriculum, but also for its array of extracurricular activities. My children are thrilled with the diverse options available, including theater, cooking, martial arts, music and band, various sports, art, robotics, and even a Pokémon club. This variety ensures that every child can find something they love, making the school a truly well-rounded community. Moreover, UPCA's commitment to cultural education through the Cambridge Program is remarkable. It's fascinating to learn about different countries and cultures through their comprehensive presentations. The school also celebrates student achievements in meaningful ways, such as Honor Roll ceremonies and Safety Patrol inductions. The Daddy/Daughter and Mommy/Son dances are a unique touch that fosters family involvement. These experiences far exceed what I encountered in my past educational experiences, highlighting UPCA's dedication to engaging both students and parents. What programs does UPCA offer that is important to your students' academic future? Answer: I'm particularly impressed with the taskbased learning approach at Union Park Charter Academy, which mirrors the real-world work environment. This method is not only innovative but crucial in preparing my children for their future careers, regardless of the paths they choose. The collaborative learning environment fosters teamwork and interaction between students and teachers, creating a community of learners. Moreover, UPCA's support for students who are bright but may struggle with focus is commendable. The dedication of the staff to go the extra mile in ensuring each student's success is truly heartening. Their willingness to tailor their approach to meet individual needs shows a deep commitment to every student's academic and personal growth. How would you describe the culture at UPCA? Answer: Union Park Charter Academy's culture is truly vibrant and nurturing, characterized by fun, innovation, and a rich tapestry of cultural diversity. It feels like a close-knit village where everyone's goal is to help each child grow and excel in their chosen path. The patience and dedication of the teachers and staff stand out, especially in how they actively involve parents in their child's development. Our hope is that the school will expand to include a high school. We wish to continue in this nurturing environment as our children grow older. The thought of leaving this supportive and dynamic school culture is something we'd rather not consider. ~ Natalie

THEATRE PLAY PRODUCTION "THE WIZ" Wesley Chapel Magazine - JANUARY • 2024 7

Answer: I chose Union Park Charter Academy (UPCA) for its exceptional qualities, including its A-rated status and location in a safe neighborhood. Our move to Union Park Townhomes was primarily to ensure my children could attend this outstanding school. UPCA brilliantly bridges the gap between public and private schooling, with a strong focus on discipline through uniforms and adherence to rules. More than just enforcing a dress code, the school instills important values like hygiene, respect, and rule-following. The diverse curriculum at UPCA ensures a comprehensive education, but what's equally impressive is the school's security. The pickup and drop-off process is strictly managed, ensuring no room for safety concerns. This vigilance extends throughout the school day; each community within the school has its own bathroom, minimizing the need for students to leave the classroom and wander the halls. This setup, along with the school's top-notch security measures, gives me peace of mind knowing my children are in a safe and protective environment. How does UPCA help your kids? Answer: UPCA really focuses on important values like integrity, self-worth, encouragement, trust, respect, kindness, gentleness, discipline, humility, and gratitude. These values don't just help in school; they're shaping my kids into better people. Plus, the school's reward system is something I truly appreciate. For instance, when my kids were named 'Students of the Month,' it showed they had gone above and beyond in demonstrating these character traits. They earn 'live school points' for good behavior, which can be used for purchases at

8 Wesley Chapel Magazine - JANUARY • 2024

the end of each term. The teachers create fun goals too. If everyone earns a certain number of points, they'll throw a candy party, have a movie Friday, or a pajama day. These rewards keep the kids excited and motivated to do their best. What special classes does UPCA have for the future? Answer: The coding program at UPCA really stands out to me! It's amazing that my kids are learning coding basics right at school. This saves me the hassle of finding and paying for outside coding classes or online subscriptions. In today's world, where technology and AI are advancing so quickly, I believe these coding skills are crucial for my children. They need to be ready for the future, able to adapt to new technologies as they emerge. UPCA is preparing them well, giving them the skills and knowledge they'll need, no matter what job they choose later on. Besides coding, there are so many other activities. My younger child is in the playdough club and dreams of becoming a runner and playing basketball. My older one loves running – given the task to run two laps, he'll run five! It's wonderful to see how much they enjoy school. They're so eager every morning, wanting to be dropped off early to compete in morning work or to help out with the iPads duties. Sometimes, I'm just at a loss for words seeing their enthusiasm What's the school culture like? Answer: The culture at Union Park Charter Academy is both engaging and nurturing. Staff knowing each student by name really shows how close everyone is. I appreciate the school's quick communication. If there's an issue, I get a call

or email right away to discuss how we can help my child. This close, caring environment is also very safe. The school's strict pick-up and drop-off rules and in-classroom bathrooms mean my kids are always secure. It's great knowing they're in a safe, supportive place. ~ Felicity __________________________

A New Standard in Education

In conclusion, UPCA is redefining what it means to deliver excellent education. It stands apart by offering a first-rate educational experience that's within reach for everyone. UPCA combines the personal attention of private schooling with the openness of public education, creating an environment that's both high-class and welcoming. With small class sizes and a team of dedicated teachers, each student at UPCA gets the individual attention needed for success. This approach doesn't just teach; it nurtures, allowing growth in a supportive and refined setting. UPCA is more than just a school—it's a community dedicated to grooming young minds for the challenges ahead. Here, students aren't just learning; they're developing into the leaders, thinkers, and creators of tomorrow. As you consider the best for your child, remember that UPCA's open enrollment for the 2024 – 2025 school year starts on January 3rd. This is your opportunity to give your child an unmatched education in an elite environment. Don't miss out on joining a community that's setting a new bar for educational excellence.

Bat Facts You May Want To Know

By Lynn Barber, UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County

ttracting wildlife is the seventh principle of the Florida-Friendly LandscapingTM. Bats are also important from that perspective. Poor bats, they’re so misunderstood. Unfortunately, this lack of bat facts is leading to their decline. Florida has 13 bat species that reside here year-round. Habitat destruction, harmful pesticides and nesting colony disturbances have led to the endangerment of three Florida bat species: the gray, Indiana and Mastiff. Bats naturally control pests. They consume rootworms, cutworms, corn borer moths, potato beetles and grasshoppers. They play an important role in scientific research regarding hibernation and sonar. Additionally, their excrement provides nutrient-rich fertilizer for ground-dwelling cave life.

flight. By night, bats are uniquely equipped to catch flying insects, using their wings, skin around their tails and mouths. Bats find their food sources and travel by making ultrasonic sounds that echo off solid objects. This same technique is used by dolphins.

More Bat Facts:

Bat Houses Site Selection:

• By day, bats take shelter in foliage, under tree bark, in caves, mines, buildings and rock crevices. Many assemble in nursery colonies in the spring, leaving in July and August to begin their trek to hibernation sites. Up to 300 bats per square foot can cluster to hibernate. If hibernation is interrupted too many times, a bat may not be able to survive the winter due to the decrease in fat reserves.

Bat houses keep bats warm, dry and safe while sleeping during the day. Bats prefer temperatures between 80 and 100 degrees. If the temperature is not comfortable, bats will not inhabit the house. If no bats inhabit the bat house after three or more years, you should either change the exterior color of the bat house or its location. Don't move the house near bright lights or an area with much human activity. You can install a bat house any time of year, but bats generally take up residency in

• Bats are the only mammals capable of true

• Most Eastern bat species produce one bat baby per year, while other species produce two to four. Female colony bats create a nursery prior to giving birth. When the mothers all crowd together, the nursery temperature is higher than 100 degrees. Baby bats are furless and need a warm and humid place to survive. Colony-roosting bats have less colorful and thinner fur than solitary or foliage-roosting bats. Baby bats, like other mammals, feed on milk until they’re able to secure food on their own.

early spring. If you install your bat house in the winter, it will be available when bats are seeking a new home. Bats are more attracted to houses mounted on the sides of buildings or poles than if tree-mounted because building-mounted bat houses provide more sun and less predator perch sites. Predators include owls, hawks and falcons. Select the roost site near food and fresh water sources and a location where the sight or odor of the guano (excrement) won't be an issue. Shovel guano periodically and use as landscape soil amendment. Locate the bat house at last 20 feet from potential predator perch sites and at least 12 feet off the ground. Provide a wildlife bat habitat (bat-i-tat) in your backyard which will give you and your family hours of educational entertainment and significantly fewer insects. Bats … they’re not limited to our Halloween imaginations and experiences. The University of Florida has several bat houses on campus in Gainesville. It is quite an experience to see their massive exit. Pasco County Fire Rescue Inks Major Contract Highlights transformational shift reduction & mental health initiatives for firefighters The health and safety of our firefighters – along with competitive wages – took center stage at a recent Pasco Board of County Commissioners (BCC) meeting. We’re proud to announce a landmark, three-year agreement with the Pasco County Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4420 that sets a new standard for firefighter work-life balance, healthcare and well-being in the Tampa Bay area. Commissioners unanimously approved the agreement.

Key Contract Details: A three-year agreement ensuring stability and growth. Competitive wages to attract and retain the best in the industry An additional, fourth 24-hour shift rotation to reduce individual annual work hours by 600. Firefighters will now work 24 hours and have 72 hours off “This agreement – which includes extremely competitive wages and a transformative shift schedule – marks a significant step in addressing the unique challenges our first responders are facing,” says

BCC Chair Ron Oakley. “We’re so pleased to be able to offer this plan for improved safety and quality of life to our firefighters.” “Having grown up in a family of firefighters and first responders, I saw, firsthand, the work stress of the job,” says Pasco County Administrator Mike Carballa. “This agreement is transformational in the fire service and focuses on providing our fire rescue team proper recovery time in their lifesaving roles.” In another important move, Pasco County Fire Rescue is also announcing a partnership with local mental health professionals specializing in first responder care. This partnership provides our firefighters round-the-clock access to these essential services. “Occupational stress in first responders is linked to a higher risk of severe mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress,” says Pasco County Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4420 President John-Michael Morin. “This partnership is an incredibly valuable resource for the men and women who make so many sacrifices to keep us safe.”

Expert ER Care When does the human spirit show up? When minutes matter? In moments of bravery? In an expert’s hands? Maybe there’s no way to measure the human spirit, but we see it every day in our AdventHealth Emergency Rooms. If you or your loved one are injured or experience chest pain, stroke symptoms or severe stomach pain, go to your closest ER in Pasco County. We’re here 24/7 to help you feel whole.
