LETTER
FROM THE PUBLISHER
H
ow is your summer so far? I think we have it made here in Florida compared to the rest of the country. I have heard reports from 100 degrees to the 120’s (what?). I thought I heard on the Weather Channel, 135, but that might have been the heat index. And these same places get bitterly, freezing cold in the winter as well. I’m sorry, but I will take a bit of humidity and mid 80’s to 90’s over that grueling weather any day. Just another wonderful reason to live in this beautiful community! Back to school for many residents coming up at the end of the month. Mixed feelings begin to
stir. The disappointment of lazy days ending, the excitement of seeing old friends and meeting new ones and the nervousness of will “I” be ready for school. I’m sure the stores already have their supplies lined up; this is like Christmas for them. And the parents of just starting out Kindergarteners have their tissues in hand. Whatever your position is, just enjoy the rest of the summer before it all starts and send pictures to us of the first day of school for the September issue!

Refrigerate until serving. In a large skillet, melt half of butter and half of oil. Place half of the crab cakes in skillet. very golfer wants to be able to hit the lob shot; the smart ones use it only when no other shot will do. The first thing you have to realize is that you need a decent lie--a little cushion under the ball--to have a good chance of pulling it off. Take your most lofted wedge, play the ball just forward of center and open the clubface. The open face will let you slide the club under the ball without the toe turning over through impact.

Swing back about three-quarters, and make a gradually accelerating pass through the ball. The open face will send the ball high, so
commit to accelerating. Don’t think about hitting the ball: Make a long, smooth swing, and turn your body to the target.
• KEY MOVE Swing to a full finish, with your weight on your front foot. When the clubface is open, you need a long swing to apply enough power to get the ball to the hole.
• COMMON FAULT Trying to lift the ball, many golfers fall back and flip the club up. This leads to chunks or skulls. Shift to your left, and turn through, trusting the loft on the clubface.

From the Experts previously possible. One of the most exciting new technologies changing the face of orthodontic care today is an advanced treatment called SureSmile®. As one of the first orthodontists to bring the SureSmile technology to Tampa, I have seen firsthand how this state-of-the-art process is revolutionizing the way people wear braces. The average treatment with SureSmile is completed nearly 40% faster than conventional braces. What used to take an average of two years, we can now accomplish in about 12 to 18 months.

races are not what they used to be back when parents were kids, or even like they were a few years ago. With the latest innovations in technology, braces can align teeth faster, with better results and greater comfort than
Page 14
Though the imaging technology and the robotically bent memory alloy wires inherent to SureSmile are sophisticated, the process is simple. First, using icat® 3-D imaging, I can create a digital scan, which allows me to see the patient’s teeth and bone structure from every angle. This scan renders in about 10 seconds, compared to the 40 minutes required for creating the distasteful plaster molds of the past. Next, with virtual simulation tools, I am able to develop the best treatment plan with pinpoint precision. Finally, a robot shapes memory alloy archwires according to my prescribed plan. These “smart wires” apply a gentle, consistent force moving each tooth most efficiently into position. The teeth do not move faster, but because teeth move in a direct path, treatment takes less time.
August 2011
The digital models, computer simulations and robotics take the guesswork and potential for human error out of the treatment process altogether. I am able to diagnose patients with superior accuracy. Patients are able to see predictable outcomes, along with better results. Another beneficial thing about the robotically shaped wires is they require fewer adjustments, which translates into fewer and less painful office visits for the patient. Compared to conventional braces, patients come to 6 out of 10 appointments. A practicing orthodontist for more than a decade and a half, I have seen orthodontics change significantly through the years. I believe technologies, such as SureSmile, are the next evolution of orthodontic care. SureSmile enables me to provide the best orthodontic care available in the industry today. When I consider what nearly 40% less time in braces means to a teen going to prom, or what a healthy, straight smile means to a bride, I see the value of the technology in everyday practice. Dr. Mark S. Farina is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a practicing orthodontist in Tampa, Florida. Dr. Farina was the first in Tampa to deliver the pinpoint accuracy of 3-D imaging and the robotic precision of SureSmile.

Rotary NEWS President Gary Gunter’s
Year in Review
D
ear Rotarians and friends: Many thanks to each and every one of you for making this an incredibly great year for me, for Joyce and for Sean. We have truly enjoyed each and every moment. We had terrific fun last June 25th when we cruised into the new Tampa Rotary New Year with our fantastic cruise themed banquet, including our ship lit with 500 lights. We enjoyed a couple of special happy hours at the West Meadows clubhouse on August 6 and on March 18th. Thanks to all of you for your help and participation! On September 12 we had the most fun we’ve ever had at a golf tournament. It was a spectacular success thanks to the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club and their General Manager, Dave Kupstas. On September 18 we had the most marvelous canoe trip -- it was our most successful ever! We enjoyed the most organized and wonderful day on the river and at the barbecue afterwards. Shelton Wood, Tom Gruber and Eric Longphee did a great job! Mac Anderson brought loads of Rotaract students to join in the fun. On October 22nd, we enjoyed another successful casino night -- it was a fantastic effort led by Robert Garofano, with lots of help from Karen Frashier and Lesley Zajac. On November 17 we helped give out Thanksgiving turkeys and lots of food to needy people at the helping hands pantry in Wesley Chapel. On December 10 we experienced a very different New Tampa Rotary Christmas party -- complete
with a show, starring special guests from our own club. We will always remember Karen Frashier as Marilyn Monroe singing Santa baby to our own Santa -- Peter Gambacorta. We ended up 2010 with a bang -- on December 31 we converged at the home of Dennis and Fran Loomis for a big new year’s party including a fireworks show. Thanks to our crack staff of Dr. Mac Anderson and lawyer Dave Lanigan, no one was hurt during the fireworks performance. On January 23rd, I represented our club at Rotary’s Camp Florida, where the Tom and Ann Wade Chapel was dedicated. This beautiful chapel was a labor of love that became a reality thanks to the Wade’s. Our club was recognized for our contributions to helping make this happen. Our Rotary youth exchange student, Necdet Ergul, who arrived in August and had been hosted by several other families from our club, came to stay with Joyce, Sean and me on February 1st. This has been a wonderful experience; -- he is incredibly smart and is a great person with a kind heart. He departed for his native land of Istanbul, Turkey on July 6th. On March 9th, we had our pig fest kickoff party, which started us off with a bang and garnered good publicity which helped us line up over $30,000 worth of free advertising for the event. We went a long way towards enhancing Rotary’s name in our community by doing this. Then came May 14th and the biggest and best Pig Fest ever! Almost every single member of our club went to great lengths to support this effort, and you all deserve the most sincere thanks that I can give on behalf of the club, and on behalf of the charities that will ultimately benefit from your efforts.
Upcoming Programs Schedule Our regular weekly club breakfast meetings are held on Friday mornings at 7:00 AM at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club, 5811 Tampa Palms Blvd. Our schedule for future club and District events, their dates, meeting times and speakers is listed below.

Update
What else did we do this year? We delivered meals to the families of veterans at the Fisher House. We purchased shelter boxes for disaster victims. We delivered U.S. Constitution’s to high school students. We bought many, many books for Mort elementary school. We contributed to relay for life. We gave generously to the needy families in our area at Christmas. We sponsored students for the seminar for tomorrow’s leaders. We helped our members host Rotary members from Sweden under the friendship exchange program. We donated money to USF women in leadership. We delivered dictionaries to fifth graders. In all, we donated over $51,000 to local charities, schools and projects this year. I am very proud of what we’ve done this year. On behalf of myself, Joyce and Sean, I would like to thank you with all my heart for a great year.

Community Spotlight
Hurricane Preparation:
9.
Part 2 of 3
• If you have food in a home freezer, your local officials will advise you as to whether or not to turn off electricity. You may lose power in which case the food will not keep for very long.
Prepare your Home Before Leaving
• Lock all doors and windows • Turn off the electric and water. You should know how to use the tools needed to do this, typically an adjustable pipe wrench and a crescent wrench.
Evacuating Your Home

5.
Power Lines. Do not go near power lines especially if they are broken or down.
6.
Clothing. Wear clothing that protects you as much as possible. Even though it is not cold during hurricane season, wear long sleeves and long pants. Wear sturdy shoes that will be suitable for walking, which you may, or may not, have to do. Take along a hat that can be used to shelter you from the sun.
Disaster Kit. Take your disaster kit with the supplies you will need. The kit will include items such as a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, food, water, and clothing. Make plans to have enough supplies for at least three days; more if possible.
• Leave your natural gas on unless you are instructed to turn it off. You may need gas for heating or cooking and only a professional can turn it on once it has been turned off. In times of emergency, it may take days or weeks to get a professional to your home to turn on your gas once it has been turned off.
8.
10.
7.
Phone. Bring your cellular phone.
Communications If you have time, call your family and friends. In any event,
leave a note as to the route you are taking and your destination. Put your emergency communications plan into effect as follows. • Choose an out of town contact your family or household members will call or email to check on each other should a disaster occur. Your selected contact should live far enough away that they would be unlikely to be directly affected by the same event and they should know they are the chosen contact. • Make sure household members have each other’s contact information including e-mail addresses and telephone numbers (home, work, pager, and cell). Leave these contact numbers at your workplace, and if you have children, at your children’s school. • Your family should know that if telephones are not working, they need to be patient and try again later or try e-mail. Many people flood the telephone lines when emergencies happen but e-mail can sometimes get through when calls cannot. Continued next issue.
