Songsalive! Sydney Workshop – Oct. 5th - A small but dedicated group of members turned up for the workshop. Four different songs were presented - we were reminded to "hug our children" as we never know what tomorrow will bring; we listened to an historical tale of Australia's convict past and the hardships faced; we heard a beautiful upbeat love song based on the concept of "If If Only Only", and lastly we enjoyed a very, very very sweet love song - literally! Songsalive! Sydney Workshop – Nov. 2nd - As it does every year, the Songsalive! November workshop fell on Melbourne Cup day, so we decided to run a little ‘race’ of our own. (For our non-Australian members, the Melbourne Cup is a prestigious horse race which is akin to a religious event – the entire country literally stops for 3 minutes while the race is run.) We had a quiz with questions based on songs and music with a horse/gambling theme. It was a lot of fun and we had some great prizes and we’ll probably look at doing more of this kind of thing in future workshops. Of course, we also did some critiquing! There were only four songs, so we were able to give each one plenty of attention. What’s great about the song critiquing is not only that you get to hear feedback and explore a range of options, but also that quite often your music and songwriting knowledge and skill are expanded by having more experienced songwriters share their advice www.songsalive.org/sydney Contributors: Roxanne Kiely Songsalive! Songsalive! Orange County Picnic – Sept. 19th - Four musicians gathered on a windy but warm and beautiful Orange County Sunday for the first annual Songsalive! Orange County Picnic at Atlantis Park in Garden Grove, California. Three guitarists, and your humble chapter coordinator on acoustic bass. Oct 19th -In In spite of roaring thunder and pouring rain, a small but happy crowd joined us at Sam Ash Music for our monthly Songwriters' Showcase. This month we welcomed a new face with a new name: Charlie O'Donnell, formerly Charlie White, who commented it had been a while since she had performed in Orange County. We were honored to have her! Afterward, returning favorite Gil Hager did something completely different: He put his songs together as a medley, and performed for 25 minutes -- non-stop. non stop Never seen anything like it. it We gave him a standing ovation for that one! - Songsalive! Orange County Showcase – Nov. 16th - One of our mottoes for the Orange County Songsalive Showcase is "Come hear local and international songwriters". In this case, we meant that quite literally! We had one performer from the South Bay, and one from the Southern Hemisphere! Kaye Reznick got the crowd going first, strumming her beautiful Martin guitar and singing songs about life in the Los Angeles region and the Devil -- her words. words The second half of our show we welcomed Jessie Sparks from Australia, making a stop in Orange County while she's in America for a full-band recording project. We were very honored to have her! On stage it was just her hands on a piano, and her powerful voice captivating the audience. We skip December here -- there's a lot going on at the store for the holidays! -- but this was a great send-off for 2010. We'll be back with more showcases in 2011! www.songsalive.org/orangecounty

KIM SONDERS Hailing from Copenhagen, Copenhagen Denmark, Denmark Kim Sonders bring an original and honest voice to pop music. With influences as diverse as the Beatles & The Doors up to contemporary female pop artist, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, Sonders has thrown himself into the songwriting and performing world. His current CD, Color On My Wall, brings those popsensitivities to bear. Read Dave Harvey's review of Kim's CD to the right. Also, find out more about Kim in his Songsalive! interview at www.songsalive.org/members Congratulations Kim on your new CD and on being named, Songsalive! Member of the Month.
DOOR ON MY WALL Album Review Kim Sonders is a songwriter from Copenhagen, Denmark who brings an honest and d original i i l voice i to t the th songs on his hi new CD: CD Color On My Wall. His arrangements are a blend of ballads and contemporary pop always with pleasant arrangements – with songs like “House of Love” that are more up-tempo with very nice jangling guitars picking out the melody. Kim writes of the wonders and joys of love with also the nightmares and defeats in love as well. The title song, “Color on My Wall” in a snappy tune with excellent background vocals and these really give the sound of the song much needed depth and harmony. As in many instances with songwriter produced works it may have been more interesting to hear a different voice in some of the songs – or perhaps hearing them in his native language as the English sounds a bit strained at times. But in several songs Kim’s voice has an alluring Euro-Pop sound that could work very well in an indie / alternative style – similar to the Chonchords - and I could envision some of the better songs placed in independent films.

IN THE NEWS Songsalive! - Songwriters h l i other helping th songwriters it As printed in the Los Feliz Examiner www.examiner.com by Bob Leggett If you're serious about songwriting, then this is th organization the i ti ffor you. Songsalive! S li ! iis a nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing, supporting, educating and promoting songwriters and composers worldwide. It was founded in Sydney, Australia in 1997 by Gilli Moon (www.gillimoon.com) and Roxanne Kiely (www roxanne kiely com) two Australian born (www.roxanne.kiely.com), singer-songwriters. With more than 20 chapters worldwide, Songsalive! is an organization run by songwriter volunteers for songwriters. Included among those 20 chapters are Los Angeles, Orange County and Las Vegas. So - what are the benefits of membership in Songsalive!? For starters, members can attend monthly showcases that allow them to showcase their talents. In fact, an artist can make a tour of the United States by playing at the different monthly showcase locations. In addition, the chapters have monthly educational workshops where members can
learn from industry professionals and receive critiques on their works in progress. These speakers include world-class songwriters like DeeDee O'Malley and Clay Drayton, as well as producers, music supervisors, managers, label executives and the like. The Los Angeles chapter has its monthly showcase on the first Friday of each month at Hallenbeck's Hallenbeck s General Store in North Hollywood. In addition, the monthly educational workshop is held on the third Sunday at the Finnish Center in North Hollywood. The Orange County Chapter holds its monthly showcase on the third Tuesday of each month at the Sam Ash Store in Westminster. Its educational workshop p is on the last Sunday of each month at the Spire's Restaurant in Garden Grove. I attended the workshop held on November 21 at the Finnish Center, featuring Clay Drayton as the speaker. For those of you who don't recognize the name, Clay was a writer for M t Motown for f more than th ten t years, as wellll as other labels. Clay is responsible for such hits as Love Hangover, performed by Diana Ross, and Dancing Machine, performed by the Jackson Five. During the first half of the seminar, members presented their songs for Clay's Clay s critique. Especially memorable was "One Way
Street," written and performed by 12-year old Shane Carther Thomas, which drew particularly high marks from Clay. After the 10 music critiques, Clay taught on the subject of 'The 7 Steps to a Hit Song." The talk was inspirational and very helpful. Members also enjoy the occasional party. In fact, Songsalive! and The Songwriter's Network are joining forces to present the Jingle Jingle Holiday Party at the Mint on December 14, starting at 7 p.m. More than 20 artists will be performing, and there will be raffles and prizes. In addition, the Songsalive! Song of the Year Award will be presented. This event is FREE to members and the g general p public.
