CHAPTER NEWS REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS

OUR CHAPTER NEWS

Songsalive! Long Island August Workshop – The Long Island chapter is doing really well especially in the past 3-4 months since an article was written up in Newsday, which is the largest newspaper in the tri-state area. There was a good turnout for the August 1st workshop, and 4-5 people who presented songs. There is an awesome vibe and seems to be more interest in our group which is great! -Steve Archdeacon Songsalive! Nashville August Showcase – As usual the Nashville Songsalive Showcase had them raising the roof in between delicious mouthfuls of Rooster BBQs famous namesake. The evening took a lot of musical twists as the styles of songwriting varied from straight up Country to deep southern Blues. We are fast developing a solid reputation as a stand alone show here in Nashville! -Deborah Bishop

Songsalive! Chicago August Workshop – On August 11th, Songsalive! Chicago hosted a workshop at the Beat Kitchen. There were 9 people total in attendance. Everyone gave positive, helpful advice and encouragement to the four people who shared their songs for song critique. In the second half, I talked about "So, I've Recorded My Music...What's Next?". I discussed the two paths one can take as a recording artist and/or as a professional songwriter. We talked about self-publication, distribution, promotion, and music licensing as a recording artist. We also discussed how to go about finding a publisher or a recording artist to record your song. Everyone had a great time networking with each other too! -Mary Lemanski Songsalive! Grass Valley August Showcase – A great time was had at the July Songsalive Showcase in Nevada City at the Stonehouse, our new location and night. The show featured Sandra Mac Dougall with her fun, quirky music and cool voice. She brought a guitarist to accompany her and they put on a good show. The owner was very pleased with the show and is looking forward to working with Songsalive again next month. -Michael Gregory Songsalive! Los Angeles August Workshop – The August Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop continued at its new location in North Hollywood at The Cahuenga General Store. Our guest speaker was producer, songwriter, composer, Joe Solo whose topic was how to write songs that appeal universally by using a few well placed tricks of the trade. We had a solid turnout for his workshop with almost 20 attendees. We were able to video Joe’s presentation and will be included in the ever growing Songalive! online education program called Songcraft which is available to Pro Members. -Rik Lawrence

CHAPTER NEWS REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS

OUR CHAPTER NEWS

Songsalive! Orange County August Showcase – This time around two actresses joined us on stage at Sam Ash Music in Westminster -- two actresses who are also fantastic singer/songwriters! First up was Justine Dorsey, a young 'rising star' from LA, at the age of 16, has already acted in several TV series and just entered college. And, we're happy to report, she is also a terrific singer who writes her own stirring material. Following Justine, Amanda Abizaid returned to our stage again. Hailing originally from Beirut, Lebanon, Amanda brought just a little lick of middle-eastern flavor to her folky songs... sometimes, more than a little! She even took requests, given that the Sam Ash staff knows her material from the frequent playing of her latest CD on the store's PA system. Typically, the crowd was captivated. -Rod O’Riley

Songsalive! New York September Showcase & Open Mic – The New York chapter has a consistent following for open mic every Tuesday at American Trash, deemed as one of the best in the city! Workshops are also held to form a communal environment for songwriters, where ideas can be heard, admired, and improved! -Dan Schteingart www.songsalive.org/chapters.htm

Songsalive! Orange County August Workshop – This month the Songsalive Orange County Monthly Songwriting Workshop welcomed a brand new face (hello Patricia!) and welcomed BACK a familiar presence we haven't seen for quite a while (hello R.D.!). For a small group of six people at this workshop, it was great to see no less than five people presenting new songs for critique! Rick Willingham started off with a peppy tune appropriately called "Just for fun", about meeting the love of your life on the beach -- and making the beach part of your life from that point on! Lucius Austin gave us a highlyproduced song about the romance of the holiday season -- and holiday romance. R.D. Girard presented something he himself said was unusual for him: A love song. And a chunky, bluesy, easy-to-hum love song as well. Rod O'Riley showed off a somewhat tongue-in-cheek punk song about the trials and travails of the hopelessly drug-addled. And then (not an intentional follower, honestly!) Steven Finch finished us off with a song about devil-maycare drinking at your local watering hole. After a break and a quick writing exercise (taken from Sheila Davis' great 1992 book, The Songwriter's Idea Book), we sat down for a discussion of putting one's personal "stamp" on a song -- in other words, how to write a song that is recognizably by YOU. And one that sounds more like you than like all of the various musical and songwriting influences that all of us have from our lives. We all agreed that this is something you think about mostly in the EDITING process, not the initial writing of the music or lyric. In other words, this is something for the re-write! And it involves taking a close look at what "your sound" actually IS, and how to apply it to your own chord progressions, and melodies, and words. -Rod O'Riley September David Harvey & Songsalive! Presents Showcase – The September David Harvey and Songsalive! Presents Showcase in Los Angeles had a standing room only audience and and amazing night of music from four great songwriters: Juice, Michael Hughes, Chauncey Bowers, and Madison Rose. The new spoken word segment at the end of the intermission featured Dylan Brody who is an author, storyteller, playwright, and humorist who is a blooger for the Huffington Post, and who tours, writes books, and produces CD's. People laughed till tears came down their cheeks, they clapped to the beat, and there were times when you could have heard a pin drop - it was everything you ever want to experience at a show. Great happy energy - they loved the entire evening! -David Harvey

CHAPTER NEWS REVIEWS OF RECENT EVENTS

OUR CHAPTER NEWS

Songsalive! Chicago September Workshop – The September 8th Songsalive! Chicago workshop at the Beat Kitchen was phenomenal. There were 9 people total in attendance. Five people presented very high-quality songs, and everyone gave them props and constructive criticism to improve their work even more. In the second half, composer Andrew Edwards discussed "The Chameleon Workflow: Changing the Compositional Process for Film, Theater, Dance, and Beyond". It was very interesting to hear about the different mindset you must have when songwriting for yourself, writing for dance, composing for musical theater, composing for traditional theater, writing for film, and writing commercial writing or "comp to temp," which is writing a composition similar to the temporary track used in production. Andrew Edwards was both informative and fun. Everyone loved the workshop! -Mary Lemanski Songsalive! Long Island September Workshop – There was a good turnout to the Sept. 5th Long Island Songsalive! Workshop. There were about 8 people who presented songs and the whole workshop had a really cool vibe to it. There was this one girl, who was 12 years old, who got up and sang an original song a capella. She was really good too and sounded a lot like Adelle. Another song that was presented on CD was a Christmas song this lyricist wrote, and it was VERY good! The Long Island chapter is going great and growing steadily from month to month. There's a real strong sense of community with everyone that has attended, and I always get positive feedback from the workshops. There's something to be said about writing original music, and there are many talented people presenting songs at the workshop. I'm excited about this workshop and excited to see it's growth over the past year and into the next year as well. -Steven Archdeacon www.songsalive.org/chapters.htm

Songsalive! Orange County September Showcase – Catching things on the fly here in Orange County, and making it work! One of our scheduled performers, the local group Union Hobos had to cancel their appearance at the last minute. Fortunately for all of us the ever-game and ever-talented Kip Corley was in the audience, and he came through as a pinch-hitter: Giving us some of his beautiful songs in his deep and throaty voice. Next up was a new face here in Orange County, the multi-talented Mina Koo. Normally fronting a show-band and working in the realm of electronica, this time around Mina took to the stage with just herself, an acoustic guitar, and her pretty yet powerful voice. The crowd loved it. Rod O’Riley Songsalive! San Francisco September First Fridays Song Circle & Showcase – The September 7th Songsalive! SF Showcase at Cyprian's was a lot of fun. We opened the first 45 minutes to Song Circle; Deborah Crooks, her husband Kwame Copeland, host Kevin Barnard, pianist Steve Prutsman and a piano player friend of Deborah's named Grace all took turns in a round, each presenting new songs. We decided to keep the format as Song Circle until show close at 9 pm. Several fans came to listen at various times during the 2 hours of showcase. Deborah and Kwame ended the show with a few songs of their own. It was an enjoyable, mellow and intimate evening of acoustic music. -Kevin Barnard Songsalive! Los Angeles September Workshop – The September Los Angeles Songsalive! Workshop continued at its new location in North Hollywood at The Cahuenga General Store with it’s largest attendance since relocating. Our guest speaker was hit songwriter Jud Friedman, whose topic covered the stories behind his hits with Whitney Houston and Barbara Streisand and the flexibility needed to work with such musical legends along with Clive Davis. We had a very large turnout for his workshop with 30 in total attendance. We were able to video Jud’s presentation that will be included in the ever growing Songsalive! online education program called Songcraft, which will be available to Pro Members shortly. -Rik Lawrence

PHILIP FEINSTEIN Interview excerpt "I believe the music industry is at exciting crossroads. We have all seen many new genres entering the field. We have also experienced the videos that go with the music. I think the next big step is where the public will be able to change the music and videos as they experience it. It will be more integrated as viewers take more control." Read the CD Review by Songsalive! and Interview with Songsalive! in the Songsalive! Profile page at www.songsalive.org/profile/philip-feinstein

Congratulations Philip Feinstein on your new CD and on being featured on our Songsalive! Pro Member Spotlight!

Expedition Album Review "Philip Feinstein is a multi-instrumentalist based in Australia. His album “Expedition” is a plethora of musical soundscapes that explore different sonic textures and sounds, worthy of film and television and radio. Picked from over 500 submissions, Philip’s title track “Expedition” is featured on the Songsalive! CD Sampler 12 and is an exquisite eclectic instrumental that showcases Feinstein’s composition and production skills. This piece has a certain medieval charm to it, as if we are in an English period film of time gone by, and also has moments of world music instrumentation."
