About I’m a UO grad, industrial designer, management semi-pro, dancer, and Oregonian. I believe product design and business is the best way to change the world. I want to create meaningful products, notable experiences, and unexpected solutions from the challenges faced by businesses, society, and people. I think about design solutions in terms of a lifetime, and business outcomes in terms of impact and legacy. I practice human-centered design and aspire to design products and systems that change how people live.

This project was completed in Spring 2015 as a part of the terminal studios for University of Oregon’s Product Design Program with Professor Avik Maitra. Students were challenged to research and define a problem for rural communities in Zambia and develop a relevant and resilient product.
The class named our business group “Small World Solutions” because our line of products served a population living in a small community under extreme circumstances meaning our solutions therefore can scale across the globe, functioning in any community.

Perpetual -Problem Statement
How can rural health clinics institute a permanent solution to drug access facing insufďŹ cient equipment, power, and income?
Perpetual Perpetual is a medical grade vaccine refrigerator that works off-grid maintaining a consistent temperature of 5 °C through a 3 part system, taking advantage of ancient and current technologies.
Biofridge
Convection
Solar
The first form of refrigeration comes from wet sand between two breathable ceramic walls.
Air Flow around the fridge is created by a solar thermo-chimney.
Finally, a low voltage contemporary refrigeration system uses off-grid solar power to bring the temperature down to 5 °C.
Passive cooling is the natural phenomena of evaporation.
This convection allows more evaporation and even cooling around perpetually without the need for electricity.
This creates an internal environment of 20 °C.
Convection brings the temperature down to 15 °C.
This source of power also ensures this temperature stays constant, a requirement for potent vaccines.

Passive Cooling
Temperature Probe
Chemical Reaction Refrigeration
Water evaporates through the porous ceramic walls , cooling the inner chamber
The fridge is ideally 5 °C (41 °F) and remains between 2-8 °C
With a low boiling point, Ammonia efficiently evaporates and condenses to cool
Solar Power System
To ensure non-stop cooling a solar-powered battery bank helps power the fridge
MOMENTUM
This project was instigated by the Fall 2014 terminal studio for University of Oregon’s Product Design Program with Professor Jason Germany. Team Momentum is Paolo Bocchio-Socolich, Serenil Sierra, and Sonja Ellicott; the team took 4th place in the Colligan Challenge in Winter 2015.
MOMENTUM Our non-profit concept seeks to connect mentors to underprivileged students in urban communities so that instead of dropping out of High School, they might find a stride that puts them on a track toward college and a better future

Momentum -User Journey Ricky is a below average student at his high school failing to pass standardized tests and due to his bad grades has lost interest in school Momentum Kiosks are set up in Ricky’s high school common area. He sees the cool technology and ends up taking the quiz, looking at mentors and printing his results.
Ricky meets with his counselor, sets up his momentum proďŹ le and ďŹ nds a mentor with their help.
Ricky uses Momentum.us to message his mentor Matt, and uses it in his free time to learn more about his own strengths and interests and how those can become a career path. Matt & Ricky meet for tutoring every other week and once a month visit a business that Ricky is interested in learning about
Ricky is getting better at studying and better grades after his study sessions with Matt. He also has found a future job and is starting to set goals about how to get there after high school graduation.
Momentum -Final User Interface The Kiosk Placed in public places and high school common areas, this is a student’s first touch point with the mentorship program This kiosk is modular and can be reused across the country The default screen’s bubbles rise up to catch attention from passers-by and interaction takes 2-5 minutes It educates the community about the local graduation issue It allows students to take a brief interactive quiz to learn more about themselves, discover local Momentum businesses and community members, and prints students’ access codes

As a financial advisor, I am happy that I am making a positive impact on my community. Growing up with a single mom showed me that determination and hard work get you part of the way - the other portion is having help from other people who care about your well being. I am very grateful that I was able to go to college, and that I now have a good job. I want to give back to the place that raised me by helping members of my community realize their full potential and assist them in planning for the future.

Momentum
Enterprising individuals are ambitious, adventurous, sociable and self-confident. They enjoy activities that require them to persuade others, such as sales, and seek out leadership roles. They are invigorated by using their interpersonal, leadership and persuasive abilities to obtain organizational goals or economic gain but may avoid routine or systematic activities. They are often effective public speakers and are generally sociable but may be viewed as domineering. They view themselves as assertive, self-confident and skilled in leadership and speaking but lacking in scientific abilities.

TITAN
This project was completed for the Winter 2015 terminal studios in the University of Oregon’s Product Design Program with Professor Trygve Faste. Students were challenged to design a vehicle for one of the world’s emerging economies. Matthew Burr and Sonja Ellicott designed a motorcycle for the busy cities of Vietnam.
TITAN
TITAN is an accessible, sustainable, and affordable motorcycle capable of handling the overwhelming needs of people in Vietnam to transport a family or a days worth of work on two wheels.

Titan The people of Vietnam are concerned with CO2 emissions and energy use and constantly need a small, inexpensive vehicle to carry their family or a days worth of work. With the knowledge that motorcycles are already being used by over 65% of Vietnamese to do this work, Titan’s design includes swappable electric batteries to meet alternative fuel cell needs, an extra long frame and durable wheels to accommodate 1 person with a day’s worth of work or up to 3 adults, and a generator on the front wheel to recharge batteries for users traveling from rural to urban places.
